The TUI status line is called the "status" window in the
documentation, but not in the source. There, the relevant files are
named "tui-stack", which to me makes it sound like they have something
to do with backtraces. This patch renames them to "tui-status".

The focused window is highlighted by using active-border-kind instead of
border-kind.
But if the focused window is the cmd window (which is an unboxed window), then
no highlighting is done, and it's not obvious from looking at the screen which
window has the focus. Instead, you have to notice the absence of highlighting
on boxed windows, and then infer that the focus is on the unboxed window.
That approach stops working if there are multiple unboxed windows.
Likewise if highlighting is switched off by setting active-border-kind to the
same value as border-kind.
Make it more explicit which window has the focus by mentioning it in the status
window, like so:
...
native process 8282 (src) In: main L7 PC: 0x400525

I noticed in gdb/tui/tui-stack.c a source-level micro-optimization where
strlen with a string literal argument:
...
strlen ("bla")
...
is replaced with sizeof:
...
sizeof ("bla") - 1
...
The benefit of this is that the optimization is also done at O0, but the
drawback is that it makes the expression harder to read.
Use const std::string to encapsulate the string literals, and use
std::string::size () instead.
I tried making the string names (PROC_PREFIX, LINE_PREFIX, PC_PREFIX and
SINGLE_KEY) lower-case, but that clashed with a pre-existing pc_prefix, so
I've left them upper-case.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

In commit 5d10a2041eb ("gdb: add string_file::release method") this was added:
...
+ std::string string_val = string.release ();
...
without updating subsequent uses of string.size (), which returns 0 after the
string.release () call.
Fix this by:
- using string_val.size () instead of string.size (), and
- adding an assert that would have caught this regression.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:
sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
problems.
The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

A common pattern for string_file is to want to move out the internal
string buffer, because it is the result of the computation that we want
to return. It is the reason why string_file::string returns a non-const
reference, as explained in the comment. I think it would make sense to
have a dedicated method for that instead and make string_file::string
return a const reference.
This allows removing the explicit std::move in the typical case. Note
that compile_program::compute was missing a move, meaning that the
resulting string was copied. With the new version, it's not possible to
forget to move.

The following patch removes the current_top_target function, replacing
uses with `current_inferior ()->top_target ()`. This is a problem for
uses in target.h, because they don't have access to the current_inferior
function and the inferior structure: target.h can't include inferior.h,
otherwise that would make a cyclic inclusion.
Avoid this by moving all implementations of the wrappers that call
target methods with the current target to target.c. Many of them are
changed from a macro to a function, which is an improvement for
readability and debuggability, IMO.
target_shortname and target_longname were not function-like macros, so a
few adjustments are needed.

The locator window, or status window as it is sometimes called is
handled differently to all the other windows.
The reason for this is that the class representing this
window (tui_locator_window) does two jobs, first this class represents
a window just like any other that has space on the screen and fills
the space with content. The second job is that this class serves as a
storage area to hold information about the current location that the
TUI windows represent, so the class has members like 'addr' and
'line_no', for example which are used within this class, and others
when they want to know which line/address the TUI windows should be
showing to the user.
Because of this dual purpose we must always have an instance of the
tui_locator_window so that there is somewhere to store this location
information.
The result of this is that the locator window must never be deleted
like other windows, which results in some special case code.
In this patch I propose splitting the two roles of the
tui_locator_window class. The tui_locator_window class will retain
just its window drawing parts, and will be treated just like any other
window. This should allow all special case code for this window to be
deleted.
The other role, that of tracking the current tui location will be
moved into a new class (tui_location_tracker), of which there will be
a single global instance. All of the places where we previously use
the locator window to get location information will now be updated to
get this from the tui_location_tracker.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

This adds "usage" text to the help for all all the TUI commands. In
some cases the usage is borderline, but I tend to think being complete
is preferable.
2020-02-22 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-win.c (_initialize_tui_win): Add usage text.
* tui/tui-stack.c (_initialize_tui_stack): Add usage text.
* tui/tui-regs.c (_initialize_tui_regs): Add usage text.
* tui/tui.c (_initialize_tui): Add usage text.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:
CXX dcache.o
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:
commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9
Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700
Remove unnecessary function prototypes.
I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

tui_show_frame_info calls update_exec_info after calling

This changes tui_gen_win_info::handle to be a specialization of
unique_ptr. This is perhaps mildly uglier in some spots, due to the
proliferation of "get"; but on the other hand it cleans up some manual
management and it allows for the removal of tui_delete_win.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-10-09 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>

Commit e594a5d1 ("Turn two locator functions into methods") turned
set_locator_fullname into a method on tui_locator_window. I missed it
at the time, but this change allows for the removal of a call to
tui_locator_win_info_ptr.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-09-20 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-stack.c (tui_locator_window::set_locator_fullname):
Don't call tui_locator_win_info_ptr.
|
|
The TUI has long had code to resize the locator, using 2 as the
height. However the code has "1" in a comment, like:
locator->resize (2 /* 1 */ ,
This patch fixes the resizing code to set the height to 1. Doing this
revealed what was probably the reason for setting the height to 2 in
the first place: this caused the locator window to scroll. However,
this is easily handled by calling scrollok on the locator window.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-09-20 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-win.c (tui_resize_all, tui_adjust_win_heights): Use 1 as
height for locator.
* tui/tui-stack.c (tui_locator_window::rerender): Call scrollok.
* tui/tui-layout.c (show_source_disasm_command, show_data)
(show_source_or_disasm_and_command): Use 1 as height for locator.
|
|
This changes tui_make_status_line to be a method on
tui_locator_window. This is a minor cleanup.
This also changes the new method to use the locator's width, rather
than the terminal width. This is important if we ever want to allow
windows to be made more narrow.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-09-20 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-stack.h (struct tui_locator_window) <make_status_line>:
Declare.
* tui/tui-stack.c (tui_locator_window::make_status_line): Rename
from tui_make_status_line.
(tui_locator_window::rerender): Update.
|
|
This changes tui_make_status_line to return std::string. This cleans
it up a bit, and removes some explicit memory management.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-09-20 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-stack.c (tui_make_status_line): Return std::string.
(tui_locator_window::rerender): Update.
|
|
This move _initialize_tui_stack to the end of tui-stack.c, per the gdb
style; and then removes two unnecessary forward declarations.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-08-30 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-stack.c (_initialize_tui_stack): Move later.
Remove unnecessary forward declarations.
|
|
This changes tui_locator_window::set_locator_fullname to re-render the
locator window, so that the callers don't need to do this.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-08-30 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-stack.c (tui_locator_window::set_locator_fullname): Call
rerender.
(tui_update_locator_fullname, tui_show_frame_info): Don't call
tui_show_locator_content.
|
|
This swaps the bodies ot tui_show_locator_content and
tui_locator_window::rerender, so that the latter does the work, and
the former is now just an exported convenience wrapper.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-08-30 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-stack.c (tui_show_locator_content): Move lower. Rewrite.
(tui_locator_window::rerender): Rewrite using body of previous
tui_show_locator_content.
|
|
This changes tui_set_locator_fullname and tui_set_locator_info to be
methods on tui_locator_window. This enables some subsequent
cleannups.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-08-30 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-stack.h (struct tui_locator_window) <set_locator_info,
set_locator_fullname>: New methods.
* tui/tui-stack.c (tui_locator_window::set_locator_fullname):
Rename from tui_set_locator_fullname.
(tui_locator_window::set_locator_info): Rename from
tui_set_locator_info. Return bool.
(tui_update_locator_fullname, tui_show_frame_info): Update.
|
|
Some #defines in tui-data.h are only used in tui-stack.c, so move them
there.
2019-08-20 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-data.h (PROC_PREFIX, LINE_PREFIX, PC_PREFIX)
(MIN_LINE_WIDTH, MIN_PROC_WIDTH, MAX_TARGET_WIDTH)
(MAX_PID_WIDTH): Move to tui-stack.c.
* tui/tui-stack.c (PROC_PREFIX, LINE_PREFIX, PC_PREFIX)
(MIN_LINE_WIDTH, MIN_PROC_WIDTH, MAX_TARGET_WIDTH)
(MAX_PID_WIDTH): Move from tui-data.h.

The TUI currently has two different ways to resize a window: the
resize method, and the methods make_invisible_and_set_new_height and
make_visible_with_new_height.
There's no deep reason to have two different ways to resize a window,
so this patch unifies them, leaving just the "resize" method.
This also changes the locator to be handled more like an ordinary
window and less like an adjunct of the associated source window.

From scanning the source now, it's clear that the content_in_use field

tui_show_frame_info has two parallel "if"s with the same condition and

Currently the target pid_to_str method returns a const char *, so many
implementations have a static buffer that they update. This patch
changes these methods to return a std::string instead. I think this
is cleaner and avoids possible gotchas when calling pid_to_str on
different ptids in a single statement. (Though no such calls exist
currently.)
This also updates various helper functions, and the gdbarch pid_to_str
methods.
I also made a best effort to fix all the callers, but I can't build
some of the *-nat.c files.
Tested by the buildbot.
