2018-02-16Remove bfd stub function casts.Alan Modra1-9/+21
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol. * libbfd.c (_bfd_bool_bfd_false_error): Rename from bfd_false. The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. bfd_zalloc/bfd_zmalloc to fix uninitialized memory reads is too big a hammer, when the size allocated depends on user input. A typical bfd_alloc, bfd_seek, bfd_bread sequence will give an error or warning at the point the file read fails when some enormous item as described by headers is not actually present in the file. Nice operating system allow memory overcommit. But not if you write to the memory. So bfd_zalloc can cause an OOM, thrashing, or system hangs. The patch also fixes a recently introduced endless loop on bad input. PR binutils/17512 * coffcode.h (coff_slurp_line_table): Don't bfd_zalloc, just memset the particular bits we need. Update src after hitting loop "continue". Don't count lineno omitted due to invalid symbols in nbr_func, and update lineno_count. Init entire terminating lineno. o bfd_read and bfd_write lose an unnecessary param and become bfd_bread and bfd_bwrite. o bfd_*alloc now all take a bfd_size_type arg, and will error if size_t is too small. eg. 32 bit host, 64 bit bfd, verrry big files or bugs in linker scripts etc. o file_ptr becomes a bfd_signed_vma. Besides matching sizes with various other types involved in handling sections, this should make it easier for bfd to support a 64 bit off_t on 32 bit hosts that provide it. o I've made the H_GET_* and H_PUT_* macros (which invoke bfd_h_{get,put}_*) generally available. They now cast their args to bfd_vma and bfd_byte * as appropriate, which removes a swag of casts from the source. o Bug fixes to bfd_get8, aix386_core_vec, elf32_h8_relax_section, and aout-encap.c. o Zillions of formatting and -Wconversion fixes.
