C++20:
#include <compare>
auto cmp4way(double a, double b)
{
return a <=> b;
}
expands to:
ucomisd %xmm1, %xmm0
jp .L8
movl $0, %eax
jne .L8
.L2:
ret
.p2align 4,,10
.p2align 3
.L8:
comisd %xmm0, %xmm1
movl $-1, %eax
ja .L2
ucomisd %xmm1, %xmm0
setbe %al
addl $1, %eax
ret
That is 3 comparisons of the same operands.
The following patch improves it to just one comparison:
comisd %xmm1, %xmm0
jp .L4
seta %al
movl $0, %edx
leal -1(%rax,%rax), %eax
cmove %edx, %eax
ret
.L4:
movl $2, %eax
ret
While a <=> b expands to a == b ? 0 : a < b ? -1 : a > b ? 1 : 2
where the first comparison is equality and this shouldn't raise
exceptions on qNaN operands, if the operands aren't equal (which
includes unordered cases), then it immediately performs < or >
comparison and that raises exceptions even on qNaNs, so we can just
perform a single comparison that raises exceptions on qNaN.
As the 4 different cases are encoded as
ZF CF PF
1 1 1 a unordered b
0 0 0 a > b
0 1 0 a < b
1 0 0 a == b
we can emit optimal sequence of comparions, first jp
for the unordered case, then je for the == case and finally jb
for the < case.
The patch pattern recognizes spaceship-like comparisons during
widening_mul if the spaceship optab is implemented, and replaces
those comparisons with comparisons of .SPACESHIP ifn which returns
-1/0/1/2 based on the comparison. This seems to work well both for the
case of just returning the -1/0/1/2 (when we have just a common
successor with a PHI) or when the different cases are handled with
various other basic blocks. The testcases cover both of those cases,
the latter with different function calls in those.

During testing after rebasing to commit I noticed a failing testcase with the
bitmask compare patch.
Consider the following C++ testcase:
#include <compare>
#define A __attribute__((noipa))
A bool f5 (double i, double j) { auto c = i <=> j; return c >= 0; }
This turns into a comparison against chars, on systems where chars are signed
the pattern inserts an unsigned convert such that it's able to do the
transformation.
i.e.:
# RANGE [-1, 2]
# c$_M_value_22 = PHI <-1(3), 0(2), 2(5), 1(4)>
# RANGE ~[3, 254]
_11 = (unsigned char) c$_M_value_22;
_19 = _11 <= 1;
# .MEM_24 = VDEF <.MEM_6(D)>
D.10434 ={v} {CLOBBER};
# .MEM_14 = VDEF <.MEM_24>
D.10407 ={v} {CLOBBER};
# VUSE <.MEM_14>
return _19;
instead of:
# RANGE [-1, 2]
# c$_M_value_5 = PHI <-1(3), 0(2), 2(5), 1(4)>
# RANGE [-2, 2]
_3 = c$_M_value_5 & -2;
_19 = _3 == 0;
# .MEM_24 = VDEF <.MEM_6(D)>
D.10440 ={v} {CLOBBER};
# .MEM_14 = VDEF <.MEM_24>
D.10413 ={v} {CLOBBER};
# VUSE <.MEM_14>
return _19;
This causes much worse codegen under -ffast-math due to phiops no longer
recognizing the pattern. It turns out that phiopts spaceship_replacement is
looking for the exact form that was just changed.
The comments seems to suggest this code only checks for (res & ~1) == 0 but the
implementation seems to suggest it's broader.
As such I added a case to check to see if the value comparison we found is a
type cast. and strips away the type cast and continues.
In match.pd the typecasts are only added for signed comparisons to == 0 and != 0
which are then rewritten into comparisons with 1.
As such I only check for 1 and LE and GT, which is what match.pd would have
rewritten it to.
This fixes the regression but this is not code I 100% understand, since I don't
really know the semantics of the spaceship operator so would appreciate an extra
look.

* tree-ssa-phiopt.c (spaceship_replacement): Handle new canonical
codegen.

This allows extra edges into the middle BB for the PHI-OPT
transforms using replace_phi_edge_with_variable that do not
end up moving stmts from that middle BB. This avoids regressing
gcc.dg/tree-ssa/ssa-hoist-4.c with the actual fix for PR102880
where CFG cleanup has the choice to remove two forwarders and
picks "the wrong" leading to
if (a > b) /
/\ /
/ <BB>
/ |
# PHI <a, b>
rather than
if (a > b) |
/\ |
<BB> \ |
/ \ |
# PHI <a, b, b>
but it's relatively straight-forward to support extra edges
into the middle-BB in paths ending in replace_phi_edge_with_variable
and that do not require moving stmts. That's because we really
only want to remove the edge from the condition to the middle BB.
Of course actually doing that means updating dominators in non-trival
ways which is why I kept the original code for the single edge
case and simply defer to CFG cleanup by adjusting the condition for
the complicated case.
The testcase needs to be a GIMPLE one since it's quite unreliable

This patch introduces a helper function build_debug_expr_decl to build
DEBUG_EXPR_DECL tree nodes in the most common way and replaces with a
call of this function all code pieces which build such a DECL itself
and sets its mode to the TYPE_MODE of its type.
There still remain 11 instances of open-coded creation of a
DEBUG_EXPR_DECL which set the mode of the DECL to something else. It
would probably be a good idea to figure out that has any effect and if
not, convert them to calls of build_debug_expr_decl too. But this
patch deliberately does not introduce any functional changes.

Many thanks again to Jakub Jelinek for a speedy fix for PR 101642.
Interestingly, that test case "bswap16(x) ? : x" also reveals a
missed optimization opportunity. The resulting "x ? bswap(x) : 0"
can be further simplified to just bswap(x).
Conveniently, tree-ssa-phiopt.c already recognizes/optimizes the
related "x ? popcount(x) : 0", so this patch simply makes that
transformation make general, additionally handling bswap, parity,
ffs and clrsb. All of the required infrastructure is already
present thanks to Jakub previously adding support for clz/ctz.
To reflect this generalization, the name of the function is changed
from cond_removal_in_popcount_clz_ctz_pattern to the hopefully
equally descriptive cond_removal_in_builtin_zero_pattern.

Previously the idea was gimple_simplify_phiopt would call
resimplify with a NULL sequence but that sometimes fails
even if there was only one statement produced. The cases
where it fails is when there are two simplifications happen.
In the case of the min/max production, the first simplifcation
produces:
(convert (min @1 @2))
And then the convert is removed by a second one. The Min statement
will be in the sequence while the op will be a SSA name. This was
rejected before as could not produce something in the sequence.
So this patch changes the way resimplify is called to always passing
a pointer to the sequence and then decide based on if op is a
SSA_NAME or not.

I had missed this when wrote the patch which allowed the
gimple to be moved from inside the conditional as it. It
was also missed in the review. Anyways the range information
needs to be reset for the moved gimple as it was under a
conditional and the flow has changed to be unconditional.
I have not seen any testcase in the wild that produces wrong code
yet which is why there is no testcase but this is similar to what
the other code in phiopt does so after moving those to match, there
might be some.

This should have been done before I started to work on connecting
PHI-OPT to match-and-simplify to see quickly if we miss anything

This improves match_simplify_replace in phi-opt to handle the
case where there is one cheap (non-call) preparation statement in the
middle basic block similar to xor_replacement and others.
This allows to remove xor_replacement which it does too.

Unfortunately this slightly changed the IL and spaceship_replacement no
longer pattern matches it.
Here are 3 improvements that make it match:
1) as mentioned in the comment above spaceship_replacement, for
strong_ordering, we are pattern matching something like:
x == y ? 0 : x < y ? -1 : 1;
and for partial_ordering
x == y ? 0 : x < y ? -1 : x > y ? 1 : 2;
but given the == comparison done first and the other comparisons only
if == was false, we actually don't care if the other comparisons
are < vs. <= (or > vs. >=), provided the operands of the comparison
are the same; we know == is false when doing those and < vs. <= or
> vs. >= have the same behavior for NaNs too
2) when y is an integral constant, we should treat x < 5 equivalently
to x <= 4 etc.
3) the code punted if cond2_phi_edge wasn't a EDGE_TRUE_VALUE edge, but
as the new IL shows, that isn't really needed; given 1) that
> and >= are equivalent in the code, any of swapping the comparison
operands, changing L[TE]_EXPR to G[TE]_EXPR or vice versa or
swapping the EDGE_TRUE_VALUE / EDGE_FALSE_VALUE bits on the edges
reverses one of the two comparisons

PR tree-optimization/94589
* tree-ssa-phiopt.c (spaceship_replacement): For integral rhs1 and
rhs2, treat x <= 4 equivalently to x < 5 etc. In cmp1 and cmp2 (if
not the same as cmp3) treat <= the same as < and >= the same as >.
Don't require that cond2_phi_edge is true edge, instead take
false/true edges into account based on cmp1/cmp2 comparison kinds.

|
As mentioned earlier, spaceship_replacement didn't optimize partial_ordering
>= 0 comparisons, because the possible values are -1, 0, 1, 2 and the
>= comparison is implemented as (res & 1) == res to choose the 0 and 1
cases from that. As we optimize that only with -ffinite-math-only, the
2 case is assumed not to happen and my earlier match.pd change optimizes
(res & 1) == res into (res & ~1) == 0, so this patch pattern matches
that case and handles it like res >= 0.

genericize_spaceship genericizes i <=> j to approximately
({ int c; if (i == j) c = 0; else if (i < j) c = -1; else c = 1; c; })
for strong ordering and
({ int c; if (i == j) c = 0; else if (i < j) c = -1; else if (i > j) c = 1; else c = 2; c; })
for partial ordering.
The C++ standard supports then == or != comparisons of that against
strong/partial ordering enums, or </<=/==/!=/>/>= comparisons of <=> result
against literal 0.
In some cases we already optimize that but in many cases we keep performing
all the 2 or 3 comparisons, compute the spaceship value and then compare
that.
The following patch recognizes those patterns if the <=> operands are
integral types or floating point (the latter only for -ffast-math) and
optimizes it to the single comparison that is needed (plus adds debug stmts
if needed for the spaceship result).
There is one thing I'd like to address in a follow-up: the pr94589-2.C
testcase should be matching just 12 times each, but runs
into operator>=(partial_ordering, unspecified) being defined as
(_M_value&1)==_M_value
rather than _M_value>=0. When not honoring NaNs, the 2 case should be
unreachable and so (_M_value&1)==_M_value is then equivalent to _M_value>=0,
but is not a single use but two uses. I'll need to pattern match that case
specially.

Before my PR97690 changes, conditional_replacement would not set neg
when the nonzero arg was boolean true.
I've simplified the testing, so that it first finds the zero argument
and then checks the other argument for all the handled cases
(1, -1 and 1 << X, where the last case is what the patch added support for).
But, unfortunately I've placed the integer_all_onesp test first.
For unsigned precision 1 types such as bool integer_all_onesp, integer_onep
and integer_pow2p can all be true and the code set neg to true in that case,
which is undesirable.
The following patch tests integer_pow2p first (which is trivially true
for integer_onep too and tree_log2 in that case gives shift == 0)

The following patch generalizes the x ? 1 : 0 -> (int) x optimization

Ugh, seems many of those macros do not evaluate the first argument.
This got broken by the change to direct_internal_fn_supported_p, previously
it used mode also in the optab test.

* tree-ssa-phiopt.c (cond_removal_in_popcount_clz_ctz_pattern):
For CLZ and CTZ tests, use type temporary instead of mode.
|
|
While we have at the RTL level noce_try_ifelse_collapse combined with
simplify_cond_clz_ctz, that optimization doesn't always trigger because
e.g. on powerpc there is an define_insn to compare a reg against zero and
copy that register to another one and so we end up with a different pseudo
in the simplify_cond_clz_ctz test and punt.
For targets that define C?Z_DEFINED_VALUE_AT_ZERO to 2 for certain modes,
we can optimize it already in phiopt though, just need to ensure that
we transform the __builtin_c?z* calls into .C?Z ifns because my recent
VRP changes codified that the builtin calls are always undefined at zero,
while ifns honor C?Z_DEFINED_VALUE_AT_ZERO equal to 2.
And, in phiopt we already have popcount handling that does pretty much the
same thing, except for always using a zero value rather than the one set
by C?Z_DEFINED_VALUE_AT_ZERO.
So, this patch extends that function to handle not just popcount, but also

As discussed in the PR, the
x < 0x80000000U to (int) x >= 0
optimization stands in the way of minmax_replacement optimization,
so for comparisons with most of the constants it works well, but when the
above mentioned optimization triggers, it is unable to do it.
The match.pd (cond (cmp (convert? x) c1) (op x c2) c3) -> (op (minmax x c1) c2)

If there is a dominating store, a store to the same reference can not be
trapped. But previously, it only supports such check on MEM_REFs.
So this patch extends it to support ARRAY_REFs and COMPONENT_REFs.
This patch also supports a special case: if there is a dominating load of
local variable without address escape, a store is not trapped, as local
stack is always writable. Other loads are ignored for simplicity, as they
don't help to check if a store can be trapped (the memory may be read-only).

This makes sure to fold generated stmts so they do not survive
until RTL expansion and cause awkward code generation.

variable with unknown offset [PR94734]
As the new testcase shows, it is not safe to assume we can optimize
a conditional store into an automatic non-addressable var, we can do it
only if we can prove that the unconditional load or store actually will
not be outside of the boundaries of the variable.
If the offset and size are constant, we can, but this is already all
checked in !tree_could_trap_p, otherwise we really need to check for
a dominating unconditional store, or for the specific case of automatic
non-addressable variables, it is enough if there is a dominating load
(that is what those 4 testcases have). tree-ssa-phiopt.c has some
infrastructure for this already, see the add_or_mark_expr method etc.,
but right now it handles only MEM_REFs with SSA_NAME first operand
and some integral offset. So, I think it can be for GCC11 extended
to handle other memory references, possibly up to just doing
get_inner_reference and hasing based on the base, offset expressions
and bit_offset and bit_size, and have also a special case that for
!TREE_ADDRESSABLE automatic variables it could ignore whether something
is a load or store because the local stack should be always writable.
But it feels way too dangerous to do this this late for GCC10, so this
patch just restricts the optimization to the safe case (where lhs doesn't
trap), and on Richi's request also ignores TREE_ADDRESSABLE bit if
flag_store_data_races, because my understanding the reason for
TREE_ADDRESSABLE check is that we want to avoid introducing
store data races (if address of an automatic var escapes, some other thread
could be accessing it concurrently).

Two years ago, I've added support for up to 2 simple preparation statements
in value_replacement, but the
- && estimate_num_insns (assign, &eni_time_weights)
+ && estimate_num_insns (bb_seq (middle_bb), &eni_time_weights)
change, meant that we compute the cost of all those statements rather than
just the single assign that has been the single supported non-debug
statement in the bb before, doesn't do what I thought would do, gimple_seq
is just gimple * and thus it can't be really overloaded depending on whether
we pass a single gimple * or a whole sequence. Which means in the last
two years it doesn't count all the statements, but only the first one.
With -g that happens to be a DEBUG_STMT, or it could be e.g. the first
preparation statement which could be much cheaper than the actual assign.
