10 daysc++: Don't assume trait funcs return error_mark_node when tf_error is passed ↵Nathaniel Shead1-2/+1
[PR121291] For the sake of determining if there are other errors in user code to report early, many trait functions don't always return error_mark_node if not called in a SFINAE context (i.e., tf_error is set). This patch removes some assumptions on this behaviour I'd made when improving diagnostics of builtin traits. 2025-07-25c++: Unwrap type traits defined in terms of builtins within diagnostics ↵Nathaniel Shead1-101/+169
[PR117294] Currently, concept failures of standard type traits just report 'expression X<T> evaluates to false'. However, many type traits are actually defined in terms of compiler builtins; we can do better here. For instance, 'is_constructible_v' could go on to explain why the type is not constructible, or 'is_invocable_v' could list potential candidates. Apart from concept diagnostics, this is also useful when using such traits in a 'static_assert' directly, so this patch also adjusts the diagnostics in that context. As a first step to supporting that we need to be able to map the standard type traits to the builtins that they use. Rather than adding another list that would need to be kept up-to-date whenever a builtin is added, this patch instead tries to detect any variable template defined directly in terms of a TRAIT_EXPR. This patch also adjusts 'diagnose_trait_expr' to provide more helpful diagnostics for these cases. Not all type traits have yet been updated, this patch just updates those that seem particularly valuable or straight-forward. The function also gets moved to cp/semantics.cc to be closer to 'trait_expr_value'. Various other parts of the compiler are also adjusted here to assist in making clear diagnostics, such as making more use of 'is_stub_object' to refer to a type directly rather than in terms of 'std::declval<T>()'. Additionally, since there are now more cases of nesting within a 'static_assert'ion I felt it was helpful for the experimental-nesting mode to nest here as well. 2025-07-11c++: Implement C++26 P2786R13 - Trivial Relocatability [PR119064]Jakub Jelinek1-0/+9
The following patch implements the compiler side of the C++26 paper. Based on the https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=119064#c3 feedback, the patch enables the new conditional keywords trivially_relocatable_if_eligible and replaceable_if_eligible only for C++26, for older versions those conditional keywords yield -Wc++26-compat warning and are treated as normal identifiers. Plus __trivially_relocatable_if_eligible and __replaceable_if_eligible are handled as conditional keywords always without diagnostics (similarly to __final in C++98). The patch uses __builtin_ prefix on the new traits (but unlike clang which for some weird reason chose to name one __builtin_is_replaceable and another __builtin_is_cpp_trivially_relocatable this one uses __builtin_is_replaceable and __builtin_is_trivially_relocatable. I'll try to convince clang to change, they've only implemented it recently. The patch computes these properties on demand, only when something needs them (at the expense of eating 2 more bits per lang_type, but I've recently saved 64 bits and a patch to save another 64 bits is pending; and even 4 bits wouldn't fit). The patch doesn't add __builtin_trivially_relocate builtin that clang has, std::trivially_relocate is not constexpr and I think we don't need it for now at least until we implement some kind of vtable pointer signing __builtin_memmove should do the job. Especially if libstdc++ will for clang compatibility use the builtin if available and __builtin_memmove otherwise, we can switch any time. I've cross-tested all testcases also against the clang++ trunk implementation, and both compilers agreed in everything except for https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/143599 where clang++ was changed already and https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/144232 where I believe clang++ got it wrong too. The first testcase comes from https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2025/p2786r13.html#simple-worked-examples just tweaked so that the classes are named differently each time and that it compiles. There are 3 differences from the paper vs. the g++ as well as clang++ implementation, I've added comments into trivially-relocatable1.C but I think either that part of the paper wasn't updated through the later changes or it got it wrong. 2025-07-11 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR c++/119064 gcc/ * doc/invoke.texi (Wc++26-compat): Document. gcc/c-family/ * c.opt (Wc++26-compat): New option. * c.opt.urls: Regenerate. * c-opts.cc (c_common_post_options): Clear warn_cxx26_compat for C++26 or later. * c-cppbuiltin.cc (c_cpp_builtins): For C++26 predefine __cpp_trivial_relocatability=202502L. gcc/cp/ * cp-tree.h: Implement C++26 P2786R13 - Trivial Relocatability. 2025-06-26c++, libstdc++: Implement C++26 P2830R10 - Constexpr Type OrderingJakub Jelinek1-0/+3
The following patch attempts to implement the C++26 P2830R10 - Constexpr Type Ordering paper, with a minor change that std::type_order<T, U> class template doesn't derive from integer_constant, because std::strong_ordering is not a structural type (except in MSVC), so instead it is just a class template with static constexpr strong_ordering value member and also value_type, type and 2 operators. The paper mostly talks about using something other than mangled names for the ordering, but given that the mangler is part of the GCC C++ FE, using the mangler seems to be the best ordering choice to me. 2025-06-26 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> gcc/cp/ * cp-trait.def: Implement C++26 P2830R10 - Constexpr Type Ordering. 2025-06-16c++: add -Wsfinae-incompleteJason Merrill1-5/+53
We already error about a type or function definition causing a concept check to change value, but it would be useful to diagnose this for other SFINAE contexts as well; the memoization problem also affects templates. So -Wsfinae-incomplete remembers if we've failed a requirement for a complete type/deduced return type in a non-tf_error context, and later warns if the type/function becomes complete. This warning is enabled by default; I think the signal-to-noise ratio is high enough to warrant that, and it catches things that are likely to make the program "ill-formed, no diagnostic required". friend87.C is an interesting case; this could be considered a false positive because it is using friend injection to define the auto function to implement a compile-time counter. I think this is sufficiently pathological that it's fine to expect people who want to play this sort of game to suppress the warning. The data for this warning uses GTY((cache)) to persist through GC, but allow entries to be discarded if the key is not otherwise marked. I don't think it's desirable to export/import this information in modules, it makes sense for it to be local to a single TU. -Wsfinae-incomplete=2 adds a warning at the point of failure, which is primarily intended to help with debugging warnings from the default mode. gcc/ChangeLog: * doc/invoke.texi: Document -Wsfinae-incomplete. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c.opt: Add -Wsfinae-incomplete. * c.opt.urls: Regenerate. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * constraint.cc (failed_completions_map): New. 2025-05-28c++: add __is_*destructible builtins [PR107600]Jason Merrill1-0/+9

2025-04-14c++: wrong targs in satisfaction diagnostic context line [PR99214]Patrick Palka1-1/+3
In the three-parameter version of satisfy_declaration_constraints, when 't' isn't the most general template, then 't' won't correspond with 'args' after we augment the latter via add_outermost_template_args, and so the instantiation context that we push via push_tinst_level isn't quite correct: 'args' is a complete set of template arguments, but 't' is not necessarily the most general template. This manifests as misleading diagnostic context lines when issuing a satisfaction failure error, e.g. the below testcase without this patch we emit: In substitution of '... void A<int>::f<U>() ... [with U = int]' and with this patch we emit: In substitution of '... void A<int>::f<U>() ... [with U = char]'. This patch fixes this by passing the original 'args' to push_tinst_level, which ought to properly correspond to 't'. 2025-04-08c++: lambda in concept [PR118698]Jason Merrill1-1/+1
When normalizing is_foo for <T>, we get to normalizing callable<decltype(...),T> for <T,foo>, which means substituting <T,foo> into <decltype(...),T>. Since r14-9938, because in_template_context is false we return the lambda unchanged, just with LAMBDA_EXPR_EXTRA_ARGS set, so the closure type still refers to the is_specialization_of tparms in its CLASSTYPE_TEMPLATE_INFO. So then in normalize_atom caching find_template_parameters walks over the parameter mapping; any_template_parm_r walks into the TREE_TYPE of a LAMBDA_EXPR without considering EXTRA_ARGS and finds a template parm from the wrong parameter list. But since r15-3530 we expect to set tf_partial when substituting with dependent arguments, so we should set that when normalizing. And then tf_partial causes TREE_STATIC to be set on the EXTRA_ARGS, meaning that those args will replace all the template parms in the rest of the lambda, so we can walk just the EXTRA_ARGS and ignore the rest. PR c++/118698 gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * constraint.cc (struct norm_info): Add tf_partial. * pt.cc (any_template_parm_r): Handle LAMBDA_EXPR_EXTRA_ARGS. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * g++.dg/cpp2a/concepts-lambda22.C: New test.
2025-01-16c++: explicit spec of constrained member tmpl [PR107522]Patrick Palka1-5/+13
When defining a explicit specialization of a constrained member template (of a class template) such as f and g in the below testcase, the DECL_TEMPLATE_PARMS of the corresponding TEMPLATE_DECL are partially instantiated, whereas its associated constraints are carried over from the original template and thus are in terms of the original DECL_TEMPLATE_PARMS. So during normalization for such an explicit specialization we need to consider the (parameters of) the most general template, since that's what the constraints are in terms of and since we always use the full set of template arguments during satisfaction. In particular resolve_concept_check seems like a no-op and can be removed. * In turn, deduce_constrained_parameter doesn't seem to do anything interesting. * In light of the above we might as well inline finish_type_constraints into its only caller. * Introduce and use a helper for obtaining the prototype parameter of a concept, i.e. its first template parameter. * placeholder_extract_concept_and_args is only ever called on a concept-id, so it's simpler to inline it into its callers. * There's no such thing as a template-template-parameter with a type-constraint, so we can remove such handling from the parser. This means is_constrained_parameter is currently equivalent to declares_constrained_type_template_parameter, so let's prefer to use the latter. * Remove WILDCARD_DECL and instead use the concept's prototype parameter as the dummy first argument of a type-constraint during template argument coercion. * Remove a redundant concept_definition_p overload. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * constraint.cc (resolve_concept_check): Remove. 2024-11-22build: Remove INCLUDE_MEMORY [PR117737]Andrew Pinski1-1/+0
Since diagnostic.h is included in over half of the sources, requiring to `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` does not make sense. Instead lets unconditionally include memory in system.h. The majority of this patch is just removing `#define INCLUDE_MEMORY` from the sources which currently have it. This should also fix the mingw build issue but I have not tried it. Bootstrapped and tested on x86_64-linux-gnu. 2024-10-24Use unique_ptr in more places in pretty_printer/diagnostics [PR116613]David Malcolm1-0/+1
My forthcoming patches for PR other/116613 make much more use of cloning of pretty_printers than before, so it makes sense as a preliminary patch for the result of pretty_printer::clone to be a std::unique_ptr, rather than add more manual uses of "delete". On doing so, I noticed various other places where naked new/delete is used for run-time configuration of diagnostics: * the output format (text vs SARIF) * client data hooks * the option manager * the URLifier Hence this patch also makes use of std::unique_ptr and ::make_unique for managing such client policy classes, and also for diagnostic_buffer's per-format implementations. Unfortunately we can't directly include <memory> in our internal headers but instead any of our TUs that make use of std::unique_ptr must #define INCLUDE_MEMORY before including system.h. Hence the bulk of this patch is taken up with adding a define of INCLUDE_MEMORY to hundreds of source files: everything that includes diagnostic.h or pretty-print.h (and thus anything transitively such as includers of lto-wrapper.h, c-tree.h, cp-tree.h and rtl-ssa.h). Thanks to Gaius Mulley for the parts of the patch that regenerated the m2 files. gcc/ada/ChangeLog: PR other/116613 * gcc-interface/misc.cc: Add #define INCLUDE_MEMORY * gcc-interface/trans.cc: Likewise. * gcc-interface/utils.cc: Likewise. gcc/analyzer/ChangeLog: PR other/116613 * analyzer-logging.cc: Add #define INCLUDE_MEMORY (logger::logger): Update for m_pp becoming a unique_ptr. 2024-10-01c++: introduce __builtin_is_virtual_base_ofGiuseppe D'Angelo1-0/+3
P2985R0 (C++26) introduces std::is_virtual_base_of; this is the compiler builtin that will back up the library trait (which strictly requires compiler support). The name has been chosen to match LLVM/MSVC's, as per the discussion here: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/98310 The actual user-facing type trait in libstdc++ will be added later. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * constraint.cc (diagnose_trait_expr): New diagnostic. * cp-trait.def (IS_VIRTUAL_BASE_OF): New builtin. * cp-tree.h (enum base_access_flags): Add a new flag to be able to request a search for a virtual base class. * cxx-pretty-print.cc (pp_cxx_userdef_literal): Update the list of GNU extensions to the grammar. * search.cc (struct lookup_base_data_s): Add a field to request searching for a virtual base class. 2024-09-05c++: Add missing auto_diagnostic_groupsNathaniel Shead1-10/+11
This patch goes through all .cc files in gcc/cp and adds in any auto_diagnostic_groups that seem to be missing by looking for any 'inform' calls that aren't grouped with their respective error/warning. Now with SARIF output support this seems to be a bit more important. The patch isn't complete; I've tried to also track helper functions used for diagnostics to group them, but some may have been missed. Additionally there are a few functions that are definitely missing groupings but I wasn't able to see an obvious way to add them without potentially grouping together unrelated messages. This list includes: - lazy_load_{binding,pendings} "during load of {binding,pendings} for" - cp_finish_decomp "in initialization of structured binding variable" - require_deduced_type "using __builtin_source_location" - convert_nontype_argument "in template argument for type %qT" - coerce_template_params "so any instantiation with a non-empty parameter pack" - tsubst_default_argument "when instantiating default argument" - invalid_nontype_parm_type_p "invalid template non-type parameter" gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * class.cc (add_method): Add missing auto_diagnostic_group. 2024-08-05c++: remove function/var concepts codeMarek Polacek1-328/+18
This patch removes vestigial Concepts TS code as discussed in <https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2024-July/657937.html>. In particular, it removes code related to function/variable concepts. That includes variable_concept_p and function_concept_p, which then cascades into removing DECL_DECLARED_CONCEPT_P etc. So I think we no longer need to say "standard concept" since there are no non-standard ones anymore. When playing with P2963R3, while reading and/or modifying code I've fixed various comment or code formatting issues (and in 3 spots also comment wording), but including that in the WIP P2963R3 patch made that patch totally unreadable because these changes were 4 times the size of the actual code changes. 2024-07-23c++: normalizing ttp constraints [PR115656]Patrick Palka1-4/+5
Here we normalize the constraint same_as<T, bool> for the first time during ttp coercion of B / UU, specifically constraint subsumption checking. During this normalization the set of in-scope template parameters i.e. current_template_parms is empty, which we rely on during normalization of the ttp constraints since we pass in_decl=NULL_TREE to norm_info. And this tricks the satisfaction cache into thinking that the satisfaction value of same_as<T, bool> is independent of its template parameters, and we incorrectly conflate the satisfaction value with T = bool vs T = long and accept the specialization A<long, B>. Since is_compatible_template_arg rewrites the ttp's constraints to be in terms of the argument template's parameters, and since it's the only caller of weakly_subsumes, the latter funcion can instead pass in_decl=tmpl to avoid relying on current_template_parms. This patch implements this, and in turns renames weakly_subsumes to ttp_subsumes to reflect that this predicate is now hardcoded for this one caller. PR c++/115656 gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * constraint.cc (weakly_subsumes): Pass in_decl=tmpl to get_normalized_constraints_from_info. Rename to ... 2024-07-18c++: Hash placeholder constraint in ctp_hasherSeyed Sajad Kahani1-2/+2
This patch addresses a difference between the hash function and the equality function for canonical types of template parameters (ctp_hasher). The equality function uses comptypes (typeck.cc) (with COMPARE_STRUCTURAL) and checks constraint equality for two auto nodes (typeck.cc:1586), while the hash function ignores it (pt.cc:4528). This leads to hash collisions that can be avoided by using `hash_placeholder_constraint` (constraint.cc:1150). Note that due to the proper handling of hash collisions (hash-table.h:1059), there is no test case that can distinguish the current implementation from the proposed one. * constraint.cc (hash_placeholder_constraint): Rename to iterative_hash_placeholder_constraint. 2024-07-10c++: remove Concepts TS codeMarek Polacek1-282/+0
In GCC 14 we deprecated Concepts TS and discussed removing the code in GCC 15. This patch removes Concepts TS code from the front end, including support for template-introductions, as in: template<typename T> concept C = true; C{T} void foo (T); // write template<C T> void foo (T); The biggest part of this patch is adjusting the testsuite. We don't want to lose coverage so I've converted most of -fconcepts-ts tests to C++20. That means they no longer have to be c++17_only. Mostly this meant turning "concept bool" into "concept" and turning function concepts into C++20 concepts. I've added missing "auto"s where required, but "auto"s in template-argument-lists are not supported anymore so I've removed some of the tests; some of them are still present to verify we don't crash on such autos. I've also added () around "requires" expressions. I plan to add a porting_to.html entry with a few hints. I've rebased and tested the patch after the recent r15-1103. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-cppbuiltin.cc (c_cpp_builtins): Remove flag_concepts_ts code. * c-opts.cc (c_common_post_options): Likewise. * c.opt: Remove -fconcepts-ts. * c.opt.urls: Regenerate. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * constraint.cc (deduce_concept_introduction, get_deduced_wildcard, get_introduction_prototype, introduce_type_template_parameter, introduce_template_template_parameter, introduce_nontype_template_parameter, build_introduced_template_parameter, introduce_template_parameter, introduce_template_parameter_pack, introduce_template_parameter, introduce_template_parameters, process_introduction_parms, check_introduction_list, finish_template_introduction): Remove. 2024-02-02c++: requires-exprs and partial constraint subst [PR110006]Patrick Palka1-12/+44
In r11-3261-gb28b621ac67bee we made tsubst_requires_expr never partially substitute into a requires-expression so as to avoid checking its requirements out of order during e.g. generic lambda regeneration. These PRs however illustrate that we still sometimes do need to partially substitute into a requires-expression, in particular when it appears in associated constraints that we're directly substituting for sake of declaration matching or dguide constraint rewriting. In these cases we're being called from tsubst_constraint during which processing_constraint_expression_p is true, so this patch checks this predicate to control whether we defer substitution or partially substitute. In turn, we now need to propagate semantic tsubst flags through tsubst_requires_expr rather than just using tf_none, notably for sake of dguide constraint rewriting which sets tf_dguide. 2023-12-01c++: mangle function template constraintsJason Merrill1-3/+7
Per https://github.com/itanium-cxx-abi/cxx-abi/issues/24 and https://github.com/itanium-cxx-abi/cxx-abi/pull/166 We need to mangle constraints to be able to distinguish between function templates that only differ in constraints. From the latter link, we want to use the template parameter mangling previously specified for lambdas to also make explicit the form of a template parameter where the argument is not a "natural" fit for it, such as when the parameter is constrained or deduced. I'm concerned about how the latter link changes the mangling for some C++98 and C++11 patterns, so I've limited template_parm_natural_p to avoid two cases found by running the testsuite with -Wabi forced on: template <class T, T V> T f() { return V; } int main() { return f<int,42>(); } template <int i> int max() { return i; } template <int i, int j, int... rest> int max() { int sub = max<j, rest...>(); return i > sub ? i : sub; } int main() { return max<1,2,3>(); } A third C++11 pattern is changed by this patch: template <template <typename...> class TT, typename... Ts> TT<Ts...> f(); template <typename> struct A { }; int main() { f<A,int>(); } I aim to resolve these with the ABI committee before GCC 14.1. We also need to resolve https://github.com/itanium-cxx-abi/cxx-abi/issues/38 (mangling references to dependent template-ids where the name is fully resolved) as references to concepts in std:: will consistently run into this area. This is why mangle-concepts1.C only refers to concepts in the global namespace so far. The library changes are to avoid trying to mangle builtins, which fails. Demangler support and test coverage is not complete yet. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * cp-tree.h (TEMPLATE_ARGS_TYPE_CONSTRAINT_P): New. 2023-10-16c++: improve fold-expr locationJason Merrill1-1/+2
I want to distinguish between constraint && and fold-expressions there of written by the user and those implied by template parameter type-constraints; to that end, let's improve our EXPR_LOCATION for an explicit fold-expression. The fold3.C change is needed because this moves the caret from the end of the expression to the operator, which means the location of the error refers to the macro invocation rather than the macro definition; both locations are still printed, but which one is an error and which a note changes. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * parser.cc (cp_parser_fold_expression): Track location range. * semantics.cc (finish_unary_fold_expr) (finish_left_unary_fold_expr, finish_right_unary_fold_expr) (finish_binary_fold_expr): Add location parm. * constraint.cc (finish_shorthand_constraint): Pass it. * pt.cc (convert_generic_types_to_packs): Likewise. * cp-tree.h: Adjust. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * g++.dg/concepts/diagnostic3.C: Add expected column. * g++.dg/cpp1z/fold3.C: Adjust diagnostic lines.
2023-08-22c++: maybe_substitute_reqs_for fixJason Merrill1-1/+1
While working on PR109751 I found that maybe_substitute_reqs_for was doing the wrong thing for a non-template friend, substituting in the template args of the scope's original template rather than those of the instantiation. 2023-05-09c++: error-recovery ICE with unstable satisfaction [PR109752]Patrick Palka1-3/+10
After diagnosing and recovering from unstable satisfaction, it's possible to evaluate an atom for the first time noisily rather than quietly. The satisfaction cache tries to handle this situation gracefully, but apparently not gracefully enough: we inserted an empty slot into the cache, and left it empty, which later makes hash_table::check_complete_insertion unhappy. This patch fixes this by removing the empty slot in this case. PR c++/109752 gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * constraint.cc (satisfaction_cache::satisfaction_cache): In the unexpected case of evaluating an atom for the first time noisily, remove the cache slot that we inserted. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * g++.dg/cpp2a/concepts-pr109752.C: New test.
