2 daysvl.c: Remove pxa2xx-specific -portrait and -rotate optionsPeter Maydell1-1/+0
The ``-portrait`` and ``-rotate`` options were documented as only working with the PXA LCD device, and all the machine types using that display device were removed in 9.2. These options were intended to simulate a mobile device being rotated by the user, and had three effects: * the display output was rotated by 90, 180 or 270 degrees (implemented in the PXA display device models) * the mouse/trackpad input was rotated the opposite way (implemented in generic code) * the machine model would signal to the guest about its orientation (implemented by e.g. the spitz machine model) Of these three things, the input-rotation was coded without being restricted to boards which supported the full set of device-rotation handling, so in theory the options were usable on other machine models with odd effects (rotating input but not display output). But this was never intended or documented behaviour, so we can reasonably drop these command line arguments without a formal deprecate-and-drop cycle for them. Remove the options, and their implementation and documentation. Describe the removal in removed-features.rst. 2023-10-12softmmu: pass the main loop status to gdb "Wxx" packetClément Chigot1-1/+1
gdb_exit function aims to close gdb sessions and sends the exit code of the current execution. It's being called by qemu_cleanup once the main loop is over. Until now, the exit code sent was always 0. Now that hardware can shutdown this main loop with custom exit codes, these codes must be transfered to gdb as well. This work is based on: https://patchew.org/QEMU/20220317125534.38706-1-philippe.mathieu.daude@gmail.com/ Simplify the initialization dance by running qemu_init() in the main thread before the Cocoa event loop starts. The secondary thread only runs only qemu_main_loop() and qemu_cleanup(). This fixes a case where addRemovableDevicesMenuItems() calls qmp_query_block() while expecting the main thread to still hold the BQL. Overriding the code after calling qemu_init() is done by dynamically replacing a function pointer variable, qemu_main when initializing ui/cocoa, which unifies the static implementation of main() for builds with ui/cocoa and ones without ui/cocoa. Currently QEMU exits with code 0 on both panic an shutdown. For tests it is useful to return 1 on panic, so that it counts as a test failure. Introduce a new exit-failure PanicAction that makes main() return EXIT_FAILURE. Tests can use -action panic=exit-failure option to activate this behavior. 2022-06-03ui: Switch "-display sdl" to use the QAPI parserThomas Huth1-2/+0
The "-display sdl" option still uses a hand-crafted parser for its parameters since we didn't want to drag an interface we considered somewhat flawed into the QAPI schema. Since the flaws are gone now, it's time to QAPIfy. This introduces the new "DisplaySDL" QAPI struct that is used to hold the parameters that are unique to the SDL display. The only specific parameter is currently "grab-mod" that is used to specify the required modifier keys to escape from the mouse grabbing mode. A global boolean variable "vga_interface_created"(declared in softmmu/globals.c) has been used to track the creation of vga interface. If the vga flag is passed in the command line "default_vga"(declared in softmmu/vl.c) variable is set to 0. To warn user, the condition checks if vga_interface_created is false and default_vga is equal to 0. If "-vga none" is passed, this patch will not warn the user regarding the creation of VGA device. The warning "A -vga option was passed but this machine type does not use that option; no VGA device has been created" is logged if vga flag is passed but no vga device is created. This patch has been tested for x86_64, i386, sparc, sparc64 and arm boards. machine_init_done is not the right flag to check when preconfig is taken into account; for example "./qemu-system-x86_64 -serial mon:stdio -preconfig" does not print the QEMU monitor header until after exit_preconfig. Add back a custom bool for mux character devices. This partially undoes commit c7278b4355 ("chardev: introduce chr_machine_done hook", 2018-03-12), but it keeps the cleaner logic using a function pointer in ChardevClass. It allows to * resolve conflicts between global -mem-prealloc and hostmem's "policy" option, fixing premature allocation before binding policy is applied * simplify complicated memory allocation routines which had to deal with 2 ways to allocate RAM. * reuse hostmem backends of a choice for main RAM without adding extra CLI options to duplicate hostmem features. A recent case was -mem-shared, to enable vhost-user on targets that don't support hostmem backends [1] (ex: s390) * move RAM allocation from individual boards into generic machine code and provide them with prepared MemoryRegion. * clean up deprecated NUMA features which were tied to the old API (see patches) - "numa: remove deprecated -mem-path fallback to anonymous RAM" - (POSTPONED, waiting on libvirt side) "forbid '-numa node,mem' for 5.0 and newer machine types" - (POSTPONED) "numa: remove deprecated implicit RAM distribution between nodes" Introduce a new machine.memory-backend property and wrapper code that aliases global -mem-path and -mem-alloc into automatically created hostmem backend properties (provided memory-backend was not set explicitly given by user). A bulk of trivial patches then follow to incrementally convert individual boards to using machine.memory-backend provided MemoryRegion. Board conversion typically involves: * providing MachineClass::default_ram_size and MachineClass::default_ram_id so generic code could create default backend if user didn't explicitly provide memory-backend or -m options * dropping memory_region_allocate_system_memory() call * using convenience MachineState::ram MemoryRegion, which points to MemoryRegion allocated by ram-memdev On top of that for some boards: * missing ram_size checks are added (typically it were boards with fixed ram size) * ram_size fixups are replaced by checks and hard errors, forcing user to provide correct "-m" values instead of ignoring it and continuing running. After all boards are converted, the old API is removed and memory allocation routines are cleaned up.
2020-02-22softmmu: split off vl.c:main() into main.cAlexander Bulekov1-0/+4
A program might rely on functions implemented in vl.c, but implement its own main(). By placing main into a separate source file, there are no complaints about duplicate main()s when linking against vl.o. For example, the virtual-device fuzzer uses a main() provided by libfuzzer, and needs to perform some initialization before running the softmmu initialization. Now, main simply calls three vl.c functions which handle the guest initialization, main loop and cleanup. 2020-02-19hostmem: fix strict bind policyIgor Mammedov1-1/+0
When option -mem-prealloc is used with one or more memory-backend objects, created backends may not obey configured bind policy or creation may fail after kernel attempts to move pages according to bind policy. Reason is in file_ram_alloc(), which will pre-allocate any descriptor based RAM if global mem_prealloc != 0 and that happens way before bind policy is applied to memory range. One way to fix it would be to extend memory_region_foo() API and add more invariants that could broken later due implicit dependencies that's hard to track. Another approach is to drop adhoc main RAM allocation and consolidate it around memory-backend. That allows to have single place that allocates guest RAM (main and memdev) in the same way and then global mem_prealloc could be replaced by backend's property[s] that will affect created memory-backend objects but only in correct order this time. With main RAM now converted to hostmem backends, there is no point in keeping global mem_prealloc around, so alias -mem-prealloc to "memory-backend.prealloc=on" machine compat[*] property and make mem_prealloc a local variable to only stir registration of compat property. *) currently user accessible -global works only with DEVICE based objects and extra work is needed to make it work with hostmem backends. But that is convenience option and out of scope of this already huge refactoring. Hence machine compat properties were used. 2019-10-31bootdevice: FW_CFG interface for LCHS valuesSam Eiderman1-0/+1
Using fw_cfg, supply logical CHS values directly from QEMU to the BIOS. Non-standard logical geometries break under QEMU. A virtual disk which contains an operating system which depends on logical geometries (consistent values being reported from BIOS INT13 AH=08) will most likely break under QEMU/SeaBIOS if it has non-standard logical geometries - for example 56 SPT (sectors per track). No matter what QEMU will report - SeaBIOS, for large enough disks - will use LBA translation, which will report 63 SPT instead. In addition we cannot force SeaBIOS to rely on physical geometries at all. A virtio-blk-pci virtual disk with 255 phyiscal heads cannot report more than 16 physical heads when moved to an IDE controller, since the ATA spec allows a maximum of 16 heads - this is an artifact of virtualization. By supplying the logical geometries directly we are able to support such "exotic" disks. We serialize this information in a similar way to the "bootorder" interface. The new fw_cfg entry is "bios-geometry". sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related to the system-emulator. Evidence: * It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits). * It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers. Split stuff related to run state management into its own header sysemu/runstate.h. Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400 to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects. Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also add qemu/main-loop.h. Several headers include sysemu/sysemu.h just to get typedef VMChangeStateEntry. Move it from sysemu/sysemu.h to qemu/typedefs.h. Spell its structure tag the same while there. Drop the now superfluous includes of sysemu/sysemu.h from headers. Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 1100 objects. qemu/uuid.h also drops from 1800 to 1100, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 5000 to 4400. In my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h triggers a recompile of some 5400 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). hw/qdev-core.h includes sysemu/sysemu.h since recent commit e965ffa70a "qdev: add qdev_add_vm_change_state_handler()". This is a bad idea: hw/qdev-core.h is widely included. Move the declaration of qdev_add_vm_change_state_handler() to sysemu/sysemu.h, and drop the problematic include from hw/qdev-core.h. Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 1800 objects. qemu/uuid.h also drops from 5400 to 1800. A few more headers show smaller improvement: qemu/notify.h drops from 5600 to 5200, qemu/timer.h from 5600 to 4500, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 5500 to 5000. Include qemu/main-loop.h only where it's needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 1700 objects. For block/aio.h and qemu/event_notifier.h, these numbers drop from 5600 to 2800. For the others, they shrink only slightly. This reverts commit 3df663e575f1876d7f3bc684f80e72fca0703d39. This reverts commit b605c47b57b58e61a901a50a0762dccf43d94783. Command line option --only-migratable is for disallowing any configuration that can block migration. Initially, --only-migratable set global variable @only_migratable. Commit 3df663e575 "migration: move only_migratable to MigrationState" replaced it by MigrationState member @only_migratable. That was a mistake. First, it doesn't make sense on the design level. MigrationState captures the state of an individual migration, but --only-migratable isn't a property of an individual migration, it's a restriction on QEMU configuration. With fault tolerance, we could have several migrations at once. --only-migratable would certainly protect all of them. Storing it in MigrationState feels inappropriate. Second, it contributes to a dependency cycle that manifests itself as a bug now. Putting @only_migratable into MigrationState means its available only after migration_object_init(). We can't set it before migration_object_init(), so we delay setting it with a global property (this is fixup commit b605c47b57 "migration: fix handling for --only-migratable"). We can't get it before migration_object_init(), so anything that uses it can only run afterwards. Since migrate_add_blocker() needs to obey --only-migratable, any code adding migration blockers can run only afterwards. This contributes to the following dependency cycle: * configure_blockdev() must run before machine_set_property() so machine properties can refer to block backends * machine_set_property() before configure_accelerator() so machine properties like kvm-irqchip get applied * configure_accelerator() before migration_object_init() so that Xen's accelerator compat properties get applied. * migration_object_init() before configure_blockdev() so configure_blockdev() can add migration blockers The cycle was closed when recent commit cda4aa9a5a0 "Create block backends before setting machine properties" added the first dependency, and satisfied it by violating the last one. Broke block backends that add migration blockers. Moving @only_migratable into MigrationState was a mistake. Revert it. This doesn't quite break the "migration_object_init() before configure_blockdev() dependency, since migrate_add_blocker() still has another dependency on migration_object_init(). To be addressed the next commit. Note that the reverted commit made -only-migratable sugar for -global migration.only-migratable=on below the hood. Documentation has only ever mentioned -only-migratable. This commit removes the arcane & undocumented alternative to -only-migratable again. Nobody should be using it.
