2025-03-21load_aout: replace bswap_needed with big_endianPaolo Bonzini1-8/+1
Targets know whether they are big-endian more than they know if the endianness is different from the host: the former is mostly a constant, at least in machine creation code, while the latter has to be computed with TARGET_BIG_ENDIAN != HOST_BIG_ENDIAN or something like that. load_aout, however, takes a "bswap_needed" argument. Replace it with a "big_endian" argument; even though all users are big-endian, it is cheap enough to keep the optional swapping functionality even for little-endian boards. 2024-10-03hw/char: Extract serial-mmBernhard Beschow1-1/+1
hw/char/serial currently contains the implementation of both TYPE_SERIAL and TYPE_SERIAL_MM. According to serial_class_init(), TYPE_SERIAL is an internal class while TYPE_SERIAL_MM is used by numerous machine types directly. Let's move the latter into its own module which makes the dependencies more obvious and the code more tidy. The includes and the dependencies have been converted mechanically except in the hw/char directories which were updated manually. The result was compile-tested. 2024-05-05hw/sparc64: set iommu_platform=on for virtio devices attached to the sun4u ↵Mark Cave-Ayland1-0/+7
machine The sun4u machine has an IOMMU and therefore it is possible to program it such that the virtio-device IOVA does not map directly to the CPU physical address. This is not a problem with Linux which always maps the IOVA directly to the CPU physical address, however it is required for the NetBSD virtio driver where this is not the case. Set the sun4u machine defaults for all virtio devices so that disable-legacy=on and iommu_platform=on to ensure a default configuration will allow virtio devices to function correctly on both Linux and NetBSD. 2024-03-11sun4u: remap ebus BAR0 to use unassigned_io_ops instead of alias to PCI IO spaceMark Cave-Ayland1-2/+7
During kernel startup OpenBSD accesses addresses mapped by BAR0 of the ebus device but at offsets where no IO devices exist. Before commit 4aa07e8649 ("hw/sparc64/ebus: Access memory regions via pci_address_space_io()") BAR0 was mapped to legacy IO space which allows accesses to unmapped devices to succeed, but afterwards these accesses to unmapped PCI IO space cause a memory fault which prevents OpenBSD from booting. Since no devices are mapped at the addresses accessed by OpenBSD, change ebus BAR0 from a PCI IO space alias to an IO memory region using unassigned_io_ops which allows these accesses to succeed and so allows OpenBSD to boot once again. 2023-07-10hw/pci/pci: Remove multifunction parameter from pci_new_multifunction()Bernhard Beschow1-3/+2
There is also pci_new() which creates non-multifunction PCI devices. Accordingly the parameter is always set to true when a multi function PCI device is to be created. The reason for the parameter's existence seems to be that it is used in the internal PCI code as well which is the only location where it gets set to false. This one usage can be resolved by factoring out an internal helper function. Remove this redundant, error-prone parameter. 2023-04-21pci: avoid accessing slot_reserved_mask directly outside of pci.cChuck Zmudzinski1-4/+3
This patch provides accessor functions as replacements for direct access to slot_reserved_mask according to the comment at the top of include/hw/pci/pci_bus.h which advises that data structures for PCIBus should not be directly accessed but instead be accessed using accessor functions in pci.h. Three accessor functions can conveniently replace all direct accesses of slot_reserved_mask. With this patch, the new accessor functions are used in hw/sparc64/sun4u.c and hw/xen/xen_pt.c and pci_bus.h is removed from the included header files of the same two files. 2022-05-09Warn user if the vga flag is passed but no vga device is createdGautam Agrawal1-0/+1
A global boolean variable "vga_interface_created"(declared in softmmu/globals.c) has been used to track the creation of vga interface. If the vga flag is passed in the command line "default_vga"(declared in softmmu/vl.c) variable is set to 0. To warn user, the condition checks if vga_interface_created is false and default_vga is equal to 0. If "-vga none" is passed, this patch will not warn the user regarding the creation of VGA device. The warning "A -vga option was passed but this machine type does not use that option; no VGA device has been created" is logged if vga flag is passed but no vga device is created. This patch has been tested for x86_64, i386, sparc, sparc64 and arm boards. 2020-08-14nvram: Exit QEMU if NVRAM cannot contain all -prom-env dataGreg Kurz1-1/+1
Since commit 61f20b9dc5b7 ("spapr_nvram: Pre-initialize the NVRAM to support the -prom-env parameter"), pseries machines can pre-initialize the "system" partition in the NVRAM with the data passed to all -prom-env parameters on the QEMU command line. In this case it is assumed that all the data fits in 64 KiB, but the user can easily pass more and crash QEMU: $ qemu-system-ppc64 -M pseries $(for ((x=0;x<128;x++)); do \ echo -n " -prom-env " ; printf "%0.sx" {1..1024}; \ done) # this requires ~128 Kib malloc(): corrupted top size Aborted (core dumped) This happens because we don't check if all the prom-env data fits in the NVRAM and chrp_nvram_set_var() happily memcpy() it passed the buffer. This crash affects basically all ppc/ppc64 machine types that use -prom-env: - pseries (all versions) - g3beige - mac99 and also sparc/sparc64 machine types: - LX - SPARCClassic - SPARCbook - SS-10 - SS-20 - SS-4 - SS-5 - SS-600MP - Voyager - sun4u - sun4v Add a max_len argument to chrp_nvram_create_system_partition() so that it can check the available size before writing to memory. Since NVRAM is populated at machine init, it seems reasonable to consider this error as fatal. So, instead of reporting an error when we detect that the NVRAM is too small and adapt all machine types to handle it, we simply exit QEMU in all cases. This is still better than crashing. If someone wants another behavior, I guess this can be reworked later. 2020-06-23fdc: Reject clash between -drive if=floppy and -global isa-fdcMarkus Armbruster1-8/+1
The floppy controller devices desugar their drive properties into floppy devices (since commit a92bd191a4 "fdc: Move qdev properties to FloppyDrive", v2.8.0). This involves some bad magic in fdctrl_connect_drives(), and exists for backward compatibility. The functions for boards to create floppy controller devices fdctrl_init_isa(), fdctrl_init_sysbus(), and sun4m_fdctrl_init() desugar -drive if=floppy to these floppy controller drive properties. If you use both -drive if=floppy (or its -fda / -fdb sugar) and -global isa-fdc for the same floppy device, -global silently loses the conflict, and both backends involved end up with the floppy device frontend attached, as demonstrated by iotest 172 (see commit before previous). This is wrong. Desugar -drive if=floppy straight to floppy devices instead, with helper fdctrl_init_drives(). The conflict now gets rejected cleanly: first, fdctrl_connect_drives() creates the floppy for the controller's property, then fdctrl_init_drives() attempts to create the floppy for -drive if=floppy, but fails because the unit is already in use. Output of iotest 172 changes in three ways: 1. The clash gets rejected. 2. In one test case, "info qtree" has the floppy devices swapped, and "info block" has their QOM paths swapped. This is because the floppy device for -fda now gets created after the one for -global isa-fdc.driveB. 3. The error message for -global floppy.drive=floppy0 changes. Before the patch, we set isa-fdc.driveA to -fda's block backend, then create the floppy device for it, then move the backend from isa-fdc.driveA to floppy.drive. Floppy creation fails when applying -global floppy.drive=floppy0, because floppy0 is still attached to isa-fdc. After the patch, we create the floppy for -fda, then set its drive property to floppy0. Now floppy creation succeeds, but setting the drive property fails, because -global already set it. Yes, this is exasperatingly complicated. 2020-05-15qom: Drop parameter @errp of object_property_add() & friendsMarkus Armbruster1-1/+1
The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with the same name already exists. Since our property names are all hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to handle it is passing &error_abort. Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is also under program control, so this is a programming error, too. We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass &error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers. The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring programming errors is a bad idea. Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API. The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second call. ich9_pm_add_properties(), sparc32_ledma_realize(), sparc32_dma_realize(), xilinx_axidma_realize(), xilinx_enet_realize() are wrong that way. When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting users pick the argument is a bad idea. Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead. There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there. Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(), and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add().
