2021-07-29i2c/smbus_eeprom: Add feature bit to SPD dataBALATON Zoltan1-1/+1
Add the differential clock input feature bit to the generated SPD data. Most guests don't seem to care but pegasos2 firmware version 1.2 checks for this bit and stops with unsupported module type error if it's not present. Since this feature is likely present on real memory modules add it in the general code rather than patching the generated SPD data in pegasos2 board only. 2020-04-29smbus: Fix spd_data_generate() for number of banks > 2Markus Armbruster1-1/+1
spd_data_generate() splits @ram_size bytes into @nbanks RAM banks of 1 << sz_log2 MiB each, like this: size = ram_size >> 20; /* work in terms of megabytes */ [...] nbanks = 1; while (sz_log2 > max_log2 && nbanks < 8) { sz_log2--; nbanks++; } Each iteration halves the size of a bank, and increments the number of banks. Wrong: it should double the number of banks. The bug goes back all the way to commit b296b664ab "smbus: Add a helper to generate SPD EEPROM data". It can't bite because spd_data_generate()'s current users pass only @ram_size that result in *zero* iterations: machine RAM size #banks type bank size fulong2e 256 MiB 1 DDR 256 MiB sam460ex 2048 MiB 1 DDR2 2048 MiB 1024 MiB 1 DDR2 1024 MiB 512 MiB 1 DDR2 512 MiB 256 MiB 1 DDR2 256 MiB 128 MiB 1 SDR 128 MiB 64 MiB 1 SDR 64 MiB 32 MiB 1 SDR 32 MiB Apply the obvious, minimal fix. 2020-04-29smbus: Fix spd_data_generate() error API violationMarkus Armbruster1-26/+4
The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second call. spd_data_generate() can pass @errp to error_setg() more than once when it adjusts both memory size and type. Harmless, because no caller passes anything that needs adjusting. Until the previous commit, sam460ex passed types that needed adjusting, but not sizes. spd_data_generate()'s contract is rather awkward: If everything's fine, return non-null and don't set an error. Else, if memory size or type need adjusting, return non-null and set an error describing the adjustment. Else, return null and set an error reporting why no data can be generated. Its callers treat the error as a warning even when null is returned. They don't create the "smbus-eeprom" device then. Suspicious. Since the previous commit, only "everything's fine" can actually happen. Drop the unused code and simplify the callers. This gets rid of the error API violation. In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/qdev-properties.h triggers a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). Many places including hw/qdev-properties.h (directly or via hw/qdev.h) actually need only hw/qdev-core.h. Include hw/qdev-core.h there instead. hw/qdev.h is actually pointless: all it does is include hw/qdev-core.h and hw/qdev-properties.h, which in turn includes hw/qdev-core.h. Replace the remaining uses of hw/qdev.h by hw/qdev-properties.h. While there, delete a few superfluous inclusions of hw/qdev-core.h. Touching hw/qdev-properties.h now recompiles some 1200 objects. Transfer the state of the EEPROM on a migration. This way the data remains consistent on migration. This required moving the actual data to a separate array and using the data provided in the init function as a separate initialization array, since a pointer property has to be a void * and the array needs to be uint8_t[]. There are several boards with SPD EEPROMs that are now using duplicated or slightly different hard coded data. Add a helper to generate SPD data for a memory module of given type and size that could be used by these boards (either as is or with further changes if needed) which should help cleaning this up and avoid further duplication. cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet was introduced by commit efec3dd631d94160288392721a5f9c39e50fb2bc to replace no_user. It was supposed to be a temporary measure. When it was introduced, we had 54 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines in the code. Today (3 years later) this number has not shrunk: we now have 57 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines. I think it is safe to say it is not a temporary measure, and we won't see the flag go away soon. Instead of a long field name that misleads people to believe it is temporary, replace it a shorter and less misleading field: user_creatable. 2013-12-24hw: cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet due to pointer propsMarkus Armbruster1-0/+2
Pointer properties can be set only by code, not by device_add. A device with a pointer property can work with device_add only when the property may remain null. This is the case for property "interrupt_vector" of device "etraxfs,pic". Add a comment there. Set cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet for the other devices with pointer properties, with a comment explaining why. Juha Riihimäki and Peter Maydell deserve my thanks for making "pointer property must not remain null" blatantly obvious in the OMAP devices. Only device "smbus-eeprom" is actually changed. The others are all sysbus devices, which get cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet set in their abstract base's class init function. Setting it again in their class init function is technically redundant, but serves as insurance for when sysbus devices become available with device_add, and as documentation.
