The ref405ep machine is scheduled for removal in QEMU 10.0. Keep the 405 CPU implementation for a while because it is theoretically possible to model the power management (OCC) co-processor found on the IBM POWER [8-11] processors. 2025-02-07qemu-options: Deprecate -old-param command line optionPeter Maydell1-0/+13
The '-old-param' command line option is specific to Arm targets; it is very briefly documented as "old param mode". What this option actually does is change the behaviour when directly booting a guest kernel, so that command line arguments are passed to the kernel using the extremely old "param_struct" ABI, rather than the newer ATAGS or even newer DTB mechanisms. This support was added back in 2007 to support an old vendor kernel on the akita/terrier board types: https://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2007-07/msg00344.html Even then, it was an out-of-date mechanism from the kernel's point of view -- the kernel has had a comment since 2001 marking it as deprecated. 2025-02-07target/arm: deprecate the pxa2xx CPUs and iwMMXt emulationPeter Maydell1-0/+21
The pxa2xx CPUs are now only useful with user-mode emulation, because we dropped all the machine types that used them in 9.2. (Technically you could alse use "-cpu pxa270" with a board model like versatilepb which doesn't sanity-check the CPU type, but that has never been a supported config.) To use them (or iwMMXt emulation) with QEMU user-mode you would need to explicitly select them with the -cpu option or the QEMU_CPU environment variable. A google search finds no examples of anybody doing this in the last decade; I don't believe the GCC folks are using QEMU to test their iwMMXt codegen either. In fact, GCC is in the process of dropping support for iwMMXT entirely. The iwMMXt emulation is thousands of lines of code in QEMU, and is now the only bit of Arm insn decode which doesn't use decodetree. We have no way to test or validate changes to it. This code is just dead weight that is almost certainly not being used by anybody. Mark it as deprecated. Cope with the old version that is provided in Debian 12. --size_t-is-usize is needed on bindgen <0.61.0, and it was removed in bindgen 0.65.0, so check for it in meson.build. --merge-extern-blocks was added in 0.61.0. --formatter rustfmt was added in 0.65.0 and is the default, so remove it. 2024-11-05hw/microblaze: Deprecate big-endian petalogix-ml605 & xlnx-zynqmp-pmuPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé1-0/+6
The petalogix-ml605 machine was explicitly added as little-endian only machine in commit 00914b7d970 ("microblaze: Add PetaLogix ml605 MMU little-endian ref design"). Mark the big-endian version as deprecated. When the xlnx-zynqmp-pmu machine's CPU was added in commit 133d23b3ad1 ("xlnx-zynqmp-pmu: Add the CPU and memory"), its 'endianness' property was set to %true, thus wired in little endianness. Both machine are included in the big-endian system binary, while their CPU is working in little-endian. Unlikely to work as it. Deprecate now as broken config so we can remove soon. The 'loaded' property on TLS creds and secret objects was marked as deprecated in 6.0.0. In 7.1.0 the deprecation info was moved into the 'removed-features.rst' file, but the property was not actually removed, just made read-only. 2024-10-31migration: Deprecate query-migrationthreads commandPeter Xu1-0/+8
Per previous discussion [1,2], this patch deprecates query-migrationthreads command. To summarize, the major reason of the deprecation is due to no sensible way to consume the API properly: (1) The reported list of threads are incomplete (ignoring destination threads and non-multifd threads). (2) For CPU pinning, there's no way to properly pin the threads with the API if the threads will start running right away after migration threads can be queried, so the threads will always run on the default cores for a short window. (3) For VM debugging, one can use "-name $VM,debug-threads=on" instead, which will provide proper names for all migration threads. 2024-10-15vl.c: Remove pxa2xx-specific -portrait and -rotate optionsPeter Maydell1-0/+23
The ``-portrait`` and ``-rotate`` options were documented as only working with the PXA LCD device, and all the machine types using that display device were removed in 9.2. These options were intended to simulate a mobile device being rotated by the user, and had three effects: * the display output was rotated by 90, 180 or 270 degrees (implemented in the PXA display device models) * the mouse/trackpad input was rotated the opposite way (implemented in generic code) * the machine model would signal to the guest about its orientation (implemented by e.g. the spitz machine model) Of these three things, the input-rotation was coded without being restricted to boards which supported the full set of device-rotation handling, so in theory the options were usable on other machine models with odd effects (rotating input but not display output). But this was never intended or documented behaviour, so we can reasonably drop these command line arguments without a formal deprecate-and-drop cycle for them. Remove the options, and their implementation and documentation. Describe the removal in removed-features.rst. 2024-10-09chardev: introduce 'reconnect-ms' and deprecate 'reconnect'Daniil Tatianin1-0/+6
The 'reconnect' option only allows to specify the time in seconds, which is way too long for certain workflows. We have a lightweight disk backend server, which takes about 20ms to live update, but due to this limitation in QEMU, previously the guest disk controller would hang for one second because it would take this long for QEMU to reinitialize the socket connection. Introduce a new option called 'reconnect-ms', which is the same as 'reconnect', except the value is treated as milliseconds. These are mutually exclusive and specifying both results in an error. 'reconnect' is also deprecated by this commit to make it possible to remove it in the future as to not keep two options that control the same thing. 2024-09-19contrib/plugins: Add a plugin to generate basic block vectorsAkihiko Odaki1-0/+30
SimPoint is a widely used tool to find the ideal microarchitecture simulation points so Valgrind[2] and Pin[3] support generating basic block vectors for use with them. Let's add a corresponding plugin to QEMU too. Note that this plugin has a different goal with tests/plugin/bb.c. This plugin creates a vector for each constant interval instead of counting the execution of basic blocks for the entire run and able to describe the change of execution behavior. Its output is also syntactically simple and better suited for parsing, while the output of tests/plugin/bb.c is more human-readable. Commit b1f1e9dcfa renamed 'riscv,delegate' to 'riscv,delegation' since it is the correct name as per dt-bindings, and the absence of the correct name will result in validation fails when dumping the dtb and using dt-validate. But this change has a side-effect: every other firmware available that is AIA capable is using 'riscv,delegate', and it will fault/misbehave if this property isn't present. The property was added back in QEMU 7.0, meaning we have 2 years of firmware development using the wrong property. Re-introducing 'riscv,delegate' while keeping 'riscv,delegation' allows older firmwares to keep booting with the 'virt' machine. 'riscv,delegate' is then marked for future deprecation with its use being discouraged from now on.
