2025-03-25[lldb][NFC] Break ThreadMemory into smaller abstractions (#132905)Felipe de Azevedo Piovezan1-2/+2
ThreadMemory attempts to be a class abstracting the notion of a "fake" Thread that is backed by a "real" thread. According to its documentation, it is meant to be a class forwarding most methods to the backing thread, but it does so only for a handful of methods. Along the way, it also tries to represent a Thread that may or may not have a different name, and may or may not have a different queue from the backing thread. This can be problematic for a couple of reasons: 1. It forces all users into this optional behavior. 2. The forwarding behavior is incomplete: not all methods are currently being forwarded properly. Some of them involve queues and seem to have been intentionally left unimplemented. This commit creates the following separation: ThreadMemory <- ThreadMemoryProvidingName <- ThreadMemoryProvidingNameAndQueue ThreadMemory captures the notion of a backed thread that _really_ forwards all methods to the backing thread. (Missing methods should be implemented in a later commit, and allowing them to be implemented without changing behavior of other derived classes is the main purpose of this refactor). ThreadMemoryProvidingNameAndQueue is a ThreadMemory that allows users to override the thread name. If a name is present, it is used; otherwise the forwarding behavior is used. ThreadMemoryProvidingNameAndQueue is a ThreadMemoryProvidingName that allows users to override queue information. If queue information is present, it is used; otherwise, the forwarding behavior is used. With this separation, we can more explicitly implement missing methods of the base class and override them, if needed, in ThreadMemoryProvidingNameAndQueue. But this commit really is NFC, no new methods are implemented and no method implementation is changed.

Currently, an LLDB target option controls whether plugins report all threads. However, it seems natural for this knowledge could come from the plugin itself. To support this, this commits adds a virtual method to the plugin base class, making the Python OS query the target option to preserve existing behavior.
2024-10-24[lldb] Move ValueObject into its own library (NFC) (#113393)Jonas Devlieghere2-1/+2
ValueObject is part of lldbCore for historical reasons, but conceptually it deserves to be its own library. This does introduce a (link-time) circular dependency between lldbCore and lldbValueObject, which is unfortunate but probably unavoidable because so many things in LLDB rely on ValueObject. We already have cycles and these libraries are never built as dylibs so while this doesn't improve the situation, it also doesn't make things worse. The header includes were updated with the following command: ``` find . -type f -exec sed -i.bak "s%include \"lldb/Core/ValueObject%include \"lldb/ValueObject/ValueObject%" '{}' \; ```

2024-07-11[lldb] Fix ThreadList assignment race (#98293)Pavel Labath1-1/+1
ThreadList uses the Process mutex to guard its state. This means its not possible to safely modify its process member, as the member is required to lock the mutex. Fortunately for us, we never actually need to change the process member (we always just juggle different kinds of thread lists belonging to the same process). This patch replaces the process member assignment (which is technically a race even when it assigns the same value) with an assertion. Since all this means that the class can never change its process member value (and it also must be non-null at all times), I've also changed the member type to a reference.

I want to add some error handling to DynamicRegisterInfo because there are many operations that can fail and many of these operations do not give meaningful information back to the caller. To begin that process, I want to add a static method that is responsible for creating a DynamicRegisterInfo from a StructuredData::Dictionary (and ArchSpec). 2022-02-03[lldb] Rename Logging.h to LLDBLog.h and clean up includesPavel Labath1-0/+1
Most of our code was including Log.h even though that is not where the "lldb" log channel is defined (Log.h defines the generic logging infrastructure). This worked because Log.h included Logging.h, even though it should. After the recent refactor, it became impossible the two files include each other in this direction (the opposite inclusion is needed), so this patch removes the workaround that was put in place and cleans up all files to include the right thing. It also renames the file to LLDBLog to better reflect its purpose.

2021-07-09[lldb] Add the ability to silently import scripted commandsJonas Devlieghere1-3/+3
Add the ability to silence command script import. The motivation for this change is being able to add command script import -s lldb.macosx.crashlog to your ~/.lldbinit without it printing the following message at the beginning of every debug session. "malloc_info", "ptr_refs", "cstr_refs", "find_variable", and "objc_refs" commands have been installed, use the "--help" options on these commands for detailed help. In addition to forwarding the silent option to LoadScriptingModule, this also changes ScriptInterpreterPythonImpl::ExecuteOneLineWithReturn and ScriptInterpreterPythonImpl::ExecuteMultipleLines to honor the enable IO option in ExecuteScriptOptions, which until now was ignored. Note that IO is only enabled (or disabled) at the start of a session, and for this particular use case, that's done when taking the Python lock in LoadScriptingModule, which means that the changes to these two functions are not strictly necessary, but (IMO) desirable nonetheless. I would've preferred to remove the lazy initialization, however the fact that the scripting language is set after the debugger is created makes that tricky. A lot of comments in LLDB are surrounded by an ASCII line to delimit the begging and end of the comment. Its use is not really consistent across the code base, sometimes the lines are longer, sometimes they are shorter and sometimes they are omitted. Furthermore, it looks kind of weird with the 80 column limit, where the comment actually extends past the line, but not by much. Furthermore, when /// is used for Doxygen comments, it looks particularly odd. And when // is used, it incorrectly gives the impression that it's actually a Doxygen comment. I assume these lines were added to improve distinguishing between comments and code. However, given that todays editors and IDEs do a great job at highlighting comments, I think it's worth to drop this for the sake of consistency. The `ap` suffix is a remnant of lldb's former use of auto pointers, before they got deprecated. Although all their uses were replaced by unique pointers, some variables still carried the suffix. In r353795 I removed another auto_ptr remnant, namely redundant calls to ::get for unique_pointers. Jim justly noted that this is a good opportunity to clean up the variable names as well. I went over all the changes to ensure my find-and-replace didn't have any undesired side-effects. I hope I didn't miss any, but if you end up at this commit doing a git blame on a weirdly named variable, please know that the change was unintentional. llvm-svn: 353912

to reflect the new license. We understand that people may be surprised that we're moving the header entirely to discuss the new license. We checked this carefully with the Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach. Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers include that license only. 2018-04-13Prevent deadlock in OS PluginsJonas Devlieghere1-32/+39
Summary: When performing a synchronous resume, the API mutex is held until the process is stopped. This is fine, except for when the OS plugins are processing an event before the main thread is aware of it, in which case we end up with a deadlock because in the internal thread we acquire a resource lock first, and then wait for the API lock, while in the main thread we do the opposite, we already hold the API mutex but are now waiting for the event mutex to handle the event. This patch fixes this by relaxing the need for the API lock in the OS plugins. We can get away with this because we now this code is executed in the main thread. As stated in the comment above, we just want to ensure nobody else messes with the API while we're making a change. In theory it's possible that the main thread would release the lock while we're executing the function, but prevent this would require a more structural solution (which we want, but do not have today). The same workaround was already present, but this patch generalizes it to the whole file. This will allow me to re-land r329891. The rationale here is that ArchSpec is used throughout the codebase, including in places which should not depend on the rest of the code in the Core module. This commit touches many files, but most of it is just renaming of #include lines. In a couple of cases, I removed the #include ArchSpec line altogether, as the file was not using it. In one or two places, this necessitated adding other #includes like lldb-private-defines.h. llvm-svn: 318048
