The LLVM Style Guide says the following about error and warning messages [1]: > [T]o match error message styles commonly produced by other tools, > start the first sentence with a lowercase letter, and finish the last > sentence without a period, if it would end in one otherwise. I often provide this feedback during code review, but we still have a bunch of places where we have inconsistent error message, which bothers me as a user. I tried passing the class by value, but the llvm::raw_ostream forwarder stored in the Stream parent class isn't movable and I don't think it's worth changing that. Additionally, there's a few places that expect a StreamSP, which are easily created from a StreamUP.

This patch improves the synchronization of the debugger's output and error streams using two new abstractions: `LockableStreamFile` and `LockedStreamFile`. - `LockableStreamFile` is a wrapper around a `StreamFile` and a mutex. Client cannot use the `StreamFile` without calling `Lock`, which returns a `LockedStreamFile`. - `LockedStreamFile` is an RAII object that locks the stream for the duration of its existence. As long as you hold on to the returned object you are permitted to write to the stream. The destruction of the object automatically flush the output stream.
2024-08-27[lldb] Turn lldb_private::Status into a value type. (#106163)Adrian Prantl1-3/+2
This patch removes all of the Set.* methods from Status. This cleanup is part of a series of patches that make it harder use the anti-pattern of keeping a long-lives Status object around and updating it while dropping any errors it contains on the floor. This patch is largely NFC, the more interesting next steps this enables is to: 1. remove Status.Clear() 2. assert that Status::operator=() never overwrites an error 3. remove Status::operator=() Note that step (2) will bring 90% of the benefits for users, and step (3) will dramatically clean up the error handling code in various places. In the end my goal is to convert all APIs that are of the form ` ResultTy DoFoo(Status& error) ` to ` llvm::Expected<ResultTy> DoFoo() ` How to read this patch? The interesting changes are in Status.h and Status.cpp, all other changes are mostly ` perl -pi -e 's/\.SetErrorString/ = Status::FromErrorString/g' $(git grep -l SetErrorString lldb/source) ` plus the occasional manual cleanup.

2024-07-31[lldb] Unify the way we get the Target in CommandObject (#101208)Jonas Devlieghere1-3/+3
Currently, CommandObjects are obtaining a target in a variety of ways. Often the command incorrectly operates on the selected target. As an example, when a breakpoint command is running, the current target is passed into the command but the target that hit the breakpoint is not the selected target. In other places we use the CommandObject's execution context, which is frozen during the execution of the command, and comes with its own limitations. Finally, we often want to fall back to the dummy target if no real target is available. Instead of having to guess how to get the target, this patch introduces one helper function in CommandObject to get the most relevant target. In order of priority, that's the target from the command object's execution context, from the interpreter's execution context, the selected target or the dummy target. rdar://110846511
2024-02-27Start to clean up the process of defining command arguments. (#83097)jimingham1-39/+3
Partly, there's just a lot of unnecessary boiler plate. It's also possible to define combinations of arguments that make no sense (e.g. eArgRepeatPlus followed by eArgRepeatPlain...) but these are never checked since we just push_back directly into the argument definitions. This commit is step 1 of this cleanup - do the obvious stuff. In it, all the simple homogenous argument lists and the breakpoint/watchpoint ID/Range types, are set with common functions. This is an NFC change, it just centralizes boiler plate. There's no checking yet because you can't get a single argument wrong. The end goal is that all argument definition goes through functions and m_arguments is hidden so that you can't define inconsistent argument sets.

2023-02-28[lldb] Fix {break,watch}point command function stopping behaviourMed Ismail Bennani1-4/+5
In order to run a {break,watch}point command, lldb can resolve to the script interpreter to run an arbitrary piece of code or call into a user-provided function. To do so, we will generate a wrapping function, where we first copy lldb's internal dictionary keys into the interpreter's global dictionary, copied inline the user code before resetting the global dictionary to its previous state. However, {break,watch}point commands can optionally return a value that would tell lldb whether we should stop or not. This feature was only implemented for breakpoint commands and since we inlined the user code directly into the wrapping function, introducing an early return, that caused lldb to let the interpreter global dictionary tinted with the internal dictionary keys. This patch fixes that issue while also adding the stopping behaviour to watchpoint commands. To do so, this patch refactors the {break,watch}point command creation method, to let the lldb wrapper function generator know if the user code is a function call or a arbitrary expression. Then the wrapper generator, if the user input was a function call, the wrapper function will call the user function and save the return value into a variable. If the user input was an arbitrary expression, the wrapper will inline it into a nested function, call the nested function and save the return value into the same variable. These two commands add a list of commands to the breakpoint/watchpoint. The current implementation only supports replacing the current command list. I started with that as overwrite seems to be the most common operation. But using "add" will allow us to later offer other add-modes: "prepend", "append" and "insert". That and "overwrite" then make up a useful set of options for this operation.

This reverts commit a01b26fb51c710a3a8ef88cc83b0701461f5b9ab, because it breaks the "finish" command in some way -- the command does not terminate after it steps out, but continues running the target. The exact blast radius is not clear, but it at least affects the usage of the "finish" command in TestGuiBasicDebug.py. The error is *not* gui-related, as the same issue can be reproduced by running the same steps outside of the gui. There is some kind of a race going on, as the test fails only 20% of the time on the buildbot.

Currently, the interpreter's context is not updated until a command is executed. This has resulted in the behavior of SB-interface functions and some commands depends on previous user actions. The interpreter's context can stay uninitialized, point to a currently selected target, or point to one of previously selected targets. This patch removes any usages of CommandInterpreter::UpdateExecutionContext. CommandInterpreter::HandleCommand* functions still may override context temporarily, but now they always restore it before exiting. CommandInterpreter saves overriden contexts to the stack, that makes nesting commands possible. Added test reproduces one of the issues. Without this fix, the last assertion fails because interpreter's execution context is empty until running "target list", so, the value of the global property was updated instead of process's local instance. Summary: This patch removes File::SetStream() and File::SetDescriptor(), and replaces most direct uses of File with pointers to File. Instead of calling SetStream() on a file, we make a new file and replace it. My ultimate goal here is to introduce a new API class SBFile, which has full support for python io.IOStream file objects. These can redirect read() and write() to python code, so lldb::Files will need a way to dispatch those methods. Additionally it will need some form of sharing and assigning files, as a SBFile will be passed in and assigned to the main IO streams of the debugger. In my prototype patch queue, I make File itself copyable and add a secondary class FileOps to manage the sharing and dispatch. In that case SBFile was a unique_ptr<File>. (here: https://github.com/smoofra/llvm-project/tree/files) However in review, Pavel Labath suggested that it be shared_ptr instead. (here: https://reviews.llvm.org/D67793) In order for SBFile to use shared_ptr<File>, everything else should as well. 2019-08-31[lldb] Unify target checking in CommandObjectRaphael Isemann1-30/+9
Summary: We currently have several CommandObjects that manually reimplement the checking for a selected target or a target in the execution context (which is the selected target when they are invoked). This patch removes all these checks and replaces them by setting the eCommandRequiresTarget flag that Pavel suggested. With this flag we are doing the same check but without having to duplicate this code in all these CommandObjects. I also added a `GetSelectedTarget()` variant of the `GetSelectedOrDummyTarget()` function to the CommandObject that checks that the flag is set and then returns a reference to the target. I didn't rewrite all the `target` variables from `Target *` to `Target &` in this patch as last time this change caused a lot of merge conflicts in Swift and I would prefer having that in a separate NFC commit. A lot of comments in LLDB are surrounded by an ASCII line to delimit the begging and end of the comment. Its use is not really consistent across the code base, sometimes the lines are longer, sometimes they are shorter and sometimes they are omitted. Furthermore, it looks kind of weird with the 80 column limit, where the comment actually extends past the line, but not by much. Furthermore, when /// is used for Doxygen comments, it looks particularly odd. And when // is used, it incorrectly gives the impression that it's actually a Doxygen comment. I assume these lines were added to improve distinguishing between comments and code. However, given that todays editors and IDEs do a great job at highlighting comments, I think it's worth to drop this for the sake of consistency. Summary: Within .lldbinit, regex commands can be structured as a list of substitutions over multiple lines. It's possible that this is uninentional, but it works and has benefits. For example: command regex <command-name> s/pat1/repl1/ s/pat2/repl2/ ... I use this form of `command regex` in my `~/.lldbinit`, because it makes it clearer to write and read compared to a single line definition, because multiline substitutions don't need to be quoted, and are broken up one per line. However, multiline definitions result in usage instructions being printed for each use. The result is that every time I run `lldb`, I get a dozen or more lines of noise. With this change, the instructions are only printed when `command regex` is invoked interactively, or from a terminal, neither of which are true when lldb is sourcing `~/.lldbinit`. 2019-02-13Replace 'ap' with 'up' suffix in variable names. (NFC)Jonas Devlieghere1-9/+9
The `ap` suffix is a remnant of lldb's former use of auto pointers, before they got deprecated. Although all their uses were replaced by unique pointers, some variables still carried the suffix. In r353795 I removed another auto_ptr remnant, namely redundant calls to ::get for unique_pointers. Jim justly noted that this is a good opportunity to clean up the variable names as well. I went over all the changes to ensure my find-and-replace didn't have any undesired side-effects. I hope I didn't miss any, but if you end up at this commit doing a git blame on a weirdly named variable, please know that the change was unintentional. llvm-svn: 353912

to reflect the new license. We understand that people may be surprised that we're moving the header entirely to discuss the new license. We checked this carefully with the Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach. Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers include that license only. Some of our contributors have contributed code under our old license, and accordingly, we have retained a copy of our old license notice in the top-level files in each project and repository. llvm-svn: 351636
