2024-01-19ld: Put all emulation options in ldlex.hH.J. Lu1-35/+0
For each command line option, parse_args() calls ldemul_parse_args() to check if the command line option is an emulation option. But when there is a conflict between the emulation option value and the default option value, the default command line option will be processed as if the emulation option is used. Remove PARSE_AND_LIST_PROLOGUE and move all emulation options to ldlex.h to avoid conflicts. Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

2021-01-13SHF_LINK_ORDER fixup_link_order in ldAlan Modra1-1/+1
This moves the SHF_LINK_ORDER sorting from bfd_elf_final_link to the linker which means generic ELF targets now support SHF_LINK_ORDER and we cope with odd cases that require resizing of output sections. The patch also fixes two bugs in the current implementation, introduced by commit cd6d537c48fa. The pattern test used by that commit meant that sections matching something like "*(.IA_64.unwind* .gnu.linkonce.ia64unw.*)" would not properly sort a mix of sections matching the two wildcards. Some of the powerpc64 code editing functions are better run after dynamic symbols have stabilised in order to make proper decisions based on SYMBOL_REFERENCES_LOCAL. The dynamic symbols are processed early in bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections, before the backend always_size_sections function is called. One function, ppc64_elf_tls_setup must run before bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections because it changes dynamic symbols. ppc64_elf_edit_opd and ppc64_elf_inline_plt can run early or late, I think. ppc64_elf_tls_optimize and ppc64_elf_edit_toc are better run later. So this patch arranges to call some edit functions later via always_size_sections. PR 26655 bfd/ * elf64-ppc.c (ppc64_elf_func_desc_adjust): Rename to.. (ppc64_elf_edit): Call params->edit. 2020-07-19Power10 stub selectionAlan Modra1-3/+16
This patch better supports mixing of power10 and non-power10 code, as might be seen in a cpu-optimized library using ifuncs to select functions optimized for a given cpu. Using -Wl,--no-power10-stubs isn't that good in this situation since non-power10 notoc stubs are slower and larger than the power10 variants, which you'd like to use on power10 code paths. With this change, power10 pc-relative code that makes calls marked @notoc uses power10 stubs if stubs are necessary, and other calls use non-power10 instructions in stubs. This will mean that if gcc is generating code for -mcpu=power10 but with pc-rel disabled then you'll get the older stubs even on power10 (unless you force with -Wl,--power10-stubs). That shouldn't be too big a problem: stubs that use r2 are reasonable. It's just the ones that set up addressing using "mflr 12; bcl 20,31,.+4; mflr 11; mtlr 12" that should be avoided if possible. bfd/ * elf64-ppc.c (struct ppc_link_hash_table): Add has_power10_relocs. This implements register saving and restoring in the __tls_get_addr call stub, so that when glibc supports the optimized tls call stub gcc can generate code that assumes only r0, r12 and of course r3 are changed on a __tls_get_addr call. This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Many ELF linker targets support multiple "emulations" and thus have multiple copies of elf32.em being compiled and linked into ld. These can go anywhere, but look silly in the m%Fiddle of a message, and choosing "%P%F:" in some messages but "%F%P:" in others leads to the likelihood of duplication in ld.pot. Asking for ppc32 plt call stubs to be aligned at 32 byte boundaries didn't quite work. For ld.bfd they were spaced 32 bytes apart, but only started on a 16 byte boundary. ld.gold also didn't get it right. Finding that bug made me check over the ppc64 plt stub alignment, where I found that negative values for alignment (meaning align to minimize boundary crossing) were not accepted. Since no one has complained about that, I guess I could have removed the feature from ld.bfd documentation, but I've opted instead to correct the code. I've also added an optional alignment paramenter for ppc32 --plt-align, for some consistency with gold and ppc64 ld.bfd. bfd/ * elf32-ppc.c (ppc_elf_create_glink): Correct alignment of .glink. * elf64-ppc.c (ppc64_elf_size_stubs): Handle negative plt_stub_align. This is in preparation for the next patch adding Spectre variant 2 mitigation for PowerPC and PowerPC64. Besides tidying code involved in stub output (to reduce the number of places where bctr is output), the patch adds some user visible features: 1) PowerPC64 ELFv2 global entry stubs now are aligned under the control of --plt-align, with a default alignment of 32 bytes. 2) PowerPC64 __glink_PLTresolve is no longer padded out with nops. 3) PowerPC32 PLT stubs are aligned under the control of --plt-align, with the default alignment being 16 bytes as before. 4) The PowerPC32 branch/nop table emitted before __glink_PLTresolve is now smaller in many cases. It was sized incorrectly when the __tls_get_addr_opt stub was used, and unnecessarily included space for local ifuncs. bfd/ * elf32-ppc.c (GLINK_ENTRY_SIZE): Add parameters, handle __tls_get_addr_opt, and alignment sizing. ELFv2 functions with localentry:0 are those with a single entry point, ie. global entry == local entry, and that have no requirement on r2 or r12, and guarantee r2 is unchanged on return. Such an external function can be called via the PLT without saving r2 or restoring it on return, avoiding a common load-hit-store for small functions. The optimization is attractive. The TOC pointer load-hit-store is a major reason why calls to small functions that need no register saves, or with shrink-wrap, no register saves on a fast path, are slow on powerpc64le. To be safe, this optimization needs ld.so support to check that the run-time matches link-time function implementation. If a function in a shared library with st_other localentry non-zero is called without saving and restoring r2, r2 will be trashed on return, leading to segfaults. For that reason the optimization does not happen for weak functions since a weak definition is a fairly solid hint that the function will likely be overridden. I'm also not enabling the optimization by default unless glibc-2.26 is detected, which should have the ld.so checks implemented. bfd/ * elf64-ppc.c (struct ppc_link_hash_table): Add has_plt_localentry0. 2014-08-22Index PowerPC64 linker generated .eh_frame in .eh_frame_hdrAlan Modra1-14/+14
I noticed recently that .eh_frame FDEs generated by the linker for call stubs and .glink weren't being indexed in .eh_frame_hdr, due to bfd_elf_discard_info being run before the linker generated .eh_frame sections were available for parsing. This patch moves code around in elf64-ppc.c and ppc64elf.em to avoid that problem. Another problem fixed here is that --gc-sections parses .eh_frame early, and the existing machinery allows only one go at parsing the .eh_frame sections. That resulted in the linker generated .eh_frame CIEs not being merged and no .eh_frame_hdr index entries for those FDEs. It turns out that all the info from parsing .eh_frame is attached to the section, so order of parsing isn't important, and after parsing sec_info_type being set will prevent a section being parsed again. At least, when parsing doesn't hit an error. So there isn't really any need for "parsed_eh_frame". "merge_cies" is also redundant, which means _bfd_elf_{begin,end}_eh_frame_parsing can also disappear. bfd/ * elf-bfd.h (struct eh_frame_hdr_info): Delete merge_cies and parsed_eh_frames. The undefined function symbols (with non-zero value) on global entry stubs are discarded by objdump when disassembling, so give objdump another symbol to mark the stubs. Also fixes a couple of bugs: - entry_section was set to .opd for ELFv2, which meant a hard error rather than a warning when _start wasn't defined. - global entry stubs were not built if they were the only type of stub in an executable. bfd/ * elf64-ppc.c (ppc_stub_type): Add ppc_stub_global_entry. (struct ppc_link_hash_table): Increase size of stub_count array. (build_global_entry_stubs): Emit symbol on global entry stub. (ppc64_elf_build_stubs): NULL check htab->brlt. Add global entry stub stats. ld/ * emultempl/ppc64elf.em (stub_added): Delete. (gld${EMULATION_NAME}_finish): Call ppc64_elf_build_stubs even when none of the usual stubs have been added.
