The attempt in 5e9091dab885 to correct gold for modern LLVM has broken gold for older compilers. This commit introduced C++11 types without changing the build system to require a C++ compiler. More importantly it depends on the compiler having at least C++11 as the default language. Older compilers which support C++11 but not as the default language needlessly break. Fix that. 2022-09-14bfd: Stop using -Wstack-usage=262144 when built with ClangTsukasa OI1-0/+18
Some components of GNU Binutils will pass "-Wstack-usage=262144" when "GCC >= 5.0" is detected. However, Clang does not support "-Wstack-usage", despite that related configuration part in bfd/warning.m4 handles the latest Clang (15.0.0 as of this writing) as "GCC >= 5.0". The option "-Wstack-usage" was ignored when the first version of Clang is released but even this "ignoring" behavior is removed before Clang 4.0.0. So, if we give Clang "-Wstack-usage=262144", it generates a warning, making the build failure. Following the same format as the implementation in ld: 9e2bb0cb5e74aed4158f08495534922d7108f928 Generate a .note.package FDO package metadata ELF note, following the spec: https://systemd.io/ELF_PACKAGE_METADATA/ If the jansson library is available at build time (and it is explicitly enabled), link ld to it, and use it to validate that the input is correct JSON, to avoid writing garbage to the file. The configure option --enable-jansson has to be used to explicitly enable it (error out when not found). At least one C library (uclibc-ng) defines some of these only when the compiler is GCC. We might as well test for all three cases and handle any of them being missing. Very similar code exists in libctf and split between elfcpp and gold: fix both. (Also sync up elfcpp with a change made to libctf swap.h a few months ago: since there is no out-of-line definition of the bswap replacements, they should be declared static inline, not just inline, to prevent the linker generating out-of-line references to them.) The autotools library macro (AX_PTHREAD) is now used to detect if pthreads is present and multi-threaded linking in gold is automatically enabled if it is found. When trying to run the update-gnulib.sh script in gdb, I get this: Error: Wrong automake version (Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/\${ <-- HERE ([^ =:+{}]+)}/ at /opt/automake/1.11.1/bin/automake line 4113.), we need 1.11.1. Aborting. Apparently, it's an issue with a regex in automake that triggers a warning starting with Perl 5.22. It has been fixed in automake 1.15.1. So I think it's a good excuse to bump the versions of autoconf and automake used in the gnulib import. And to avoid requiring multiple builds of autoconf/automake, it was suggested that we bump the required version of those tools for all binutils-gdb. For autoconf, the 2.69 version is universally available, so it's an easy choice. For automake, different distros and distro versions have different automake versions. But 1.15.1 seems to be the most readily available as a package. In any case, it's easy to build it from source. I removed the version checks from AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS and AC_PREREQ, because I don't think they are useful in our case. They only specify a lower bound for the acceptable version of automake/autoconf. That's useful if you let the user choose the version of the tool they want to use, but want to set a minimum version (because you use a feature that was introduced in that version). In our case, we force people to use a specific version anyway. For the autoconf version, we have the check in config/override.m4 that enforces the version we want. It will be one less thing to update next time we change autotools version. I hit a few categories of problems that required some changes. They are described below along with the chosen solutions. Problem 1: configure.ac:17: warning: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: two- and three-arguments forms are deprecated. For more info, see: configure.ac:17: http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Modernize-AM_005fINIT_005fAUTOMAKE-invocation Solution 1: Adjust the code based on the example at that URL. Problem 2 (in zlib/): Makefile.am: error: required file './INSTALL' not found Makefile.am: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'INSTALL' Makefile.am: error: required file './NEWS' not found Makefile.am: error: required file './AUTHORS' not found Makefile.am: error: required file './COPYING' not found Makefile.am: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'COPYING' Solution 2: Add the foreign option to AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS. Problem 3: doc/Makefile.am:20: error: support for Cygnus-style trees has been removed Solution 3: Remove the cygnus options. Problem 4: Makefile.am:656: warning: 'INCLUDES' is the old name for 'AM_CPPFLAGS' (or '*_CPPFLAGS') Solution 4: Rename "INCLUDES = " to "AM_CPPFLAGS += " (because AM_CPPFLAGS is already defined earlier). Problem 8: Makefile.am:131: warning: source file 'config/tc-aarch64.c' is in a subdirectory, Makefile.am:131: but option 'subdir-objects' is disabled automake: warning: possible forward-incompatibility. automake: At least a source file is in a subdirectory, but the 'subdir-objects' automake: automake option hasn't been enabled. For now, the corresponding output automake: object file(s) will be placed in the top-level directory. However, automake: this behaviour will change in future Automake versions: they will automake: unconditionally cause object files to be placed in the same subdirectory automake: of the corresponding sources. automake: You are advised to start using 'subdir-objects' option throughout your automake: project, to avoid future incompatibilities. Solution 8: Use subdir-objects, that means adjusting references to some .o that will now be in config/. There are extensions to x86-64 psABI: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/x86-64-abi/de5_KnLHxtI to call tls_get_addr via GOT: call *__tls_get_addr@GOTPCREL(%rip) Since direct call is 4-byte long and indirect call, is 5-byte long, the extra one byte must be handled properly. For general dynamic model, one 0x66 prefix before call instruction is removed to make room for indirect call. For local dynamic model, we simply use 5-byte indirect call. TLS linker optimization is updated to recognize new instruction patterns. For local dynamic model to local exec model transition, we generate 4 0x66 prefixes, instead of 3, before mov instruction in 64-bit and generate a 5-byte nop, instead of 4-byte, before mov instruction in 32-bit. The goal of this patch is to provide an easy way to make --disable-werror the default when building binutils, or the parts of binutils that need to get built when building GDB. In development mode, we want to continue making -Werror the default with GCC. But, when making releases, I think we want to make it as easy as possible for regular users to successfully build from sources. GDB already has this kind of feature to turn -Werror as well as the use of the libmcheck library. As GDB Release Manager, I take advantage of it to turn those off after having cut the branch. I'd like to be able to do the same for the binutils bits. And perhaps Tristan will want to do the same for his releases too (not sure, binutils builders might be a little savvier than GDB builders). This patch introduces a new file, called development.sh, which just sets a variable called $development. In our development branches (Eg. "master"), it's set to true.
