2024-06-07gdb/tui: cleanup includesSimon Marchi1-5/+0
Remove includes reported as unused by clangd. Then, add any includes necessary to get rid of errors (includes possibly relying on previous includes).. I didn't remove the includes of gdb-safe-ctypes.h, because it appears to do some some preprocessor magic, redefining standard macros. The TUI can't really work properly with new-ui, at least not as currently written. This patch changes new-ui to reject an attempt. Attempting to make a DAP ui this way is also now rejected. Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the `-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.

2023-02-08Simplify interp::exec / interp_exec - let exceptions propagatePedro Alves1-2/+2
This patch implements a simplication that I suggested here: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2022-March/186320.html Currently, the interp::exec virtual method interface is such that subclass implementations must catch exceptions and then return them via normal function return. However, higher up the in chain, for the CLI we get to interpreter_exec_cmd, which does: for (i = 1; i < nrules; i++) { struct gdb_exception e = interp_exec (interp_to_use, prules[i]); if (e.reason < 0) { interp_set (old_interp, 0); error (_("error in command: \"%s\"."), prules[i]); } } and for MI we get to mi_cmd_interpreter_exec, which has: void mi_cmd_interpreter_exec (const char *command, char **argv, int argc) { ... for (i = 1; i < argc; i++) { struct gdb_exception e = interp_exec (interp_to_use, argv[i]); if (e.reason < 0) error ("%s", e.what ()); } } Note that if those errors are reached, we lose the original exception's error code. I can't see why we'd want that. And, I can't see why we need to have interp_exec catch the exception and return it via the normal return path. That's normally needed when we need to handle propagating exceptions across C code, like across readline or ncurses, but that's not the case here. It seems to me that we can simplify things by removing some try/catch-ing and just letting exceptions propagate normally. Note, the "error in command" error shown above, which only exists in the CLI interpreter-exec command, is only ever printed AFAICS if you run "interpreter-exec console" when the top level interpreter is already the console/tui. Like: (gdb) interpreter-exec console "foobar" Undefined command: "foobar". Try "help". error in command: "foobar". You won't see it with MI's "-interpreter-exec console" from a top level MI interpreter: (gdb) -interpreter-exec console "foobar" &"Undefined command: \"foobar\". Try \"help\".\n" ^error,msg="Undefined command: \"foobar\". Try \"help\"." (gdb) nor with MI's "-interpreter-exec mi" from a top level MI interpreter: (gdb) -interpreter-exec mi "-foobar" ^error,msg="Undefined MI command: foobar",code="undefined-command" ^done (gdb) in both these cases because MI's -interpreter-exec just does: error ("%s", e.what ()); You won't see it either when running an MI command with the CLI's "interpreter-exec mi": (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-foobar" ^error,msg="Undefined MI command: foobar",code="undefined-command" (gdb) This last case is because MI's interp::exec implementation never returns an error: gdb_exception mi_interp::exec (const char *command) { mi_execute_command_wrapper (command); return gdb_exception (); } Thus I think that "error in command" error is pretty pointless, and since it simplifies things to not have it, the patch just removes it. 2022-10-19internal_error: remove need to pass __FILE__/__LINE__Pedro Alves1-1/+1
Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__ explicitly, like: internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var); The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we already use them in several places, including the related gdb_assert_not_reached. So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else, and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands __FILE__/__LINE__ itself. The result is that we now should call internal_error like so: internal_error ("foo %d", var); Likewise for internal_warning. The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done with a perl/sed script. The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h, gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py. PR mi/15811 points out that "source"ing a file that uses interpreter-exec will put gdb in a weird state, where the CLI stops working. 2022-06-24Eliminate TUI/CLI observers duplicationPedro Alves1-187/+3
For historical reasons, the CLI and the TUI observers are basically exact duplicates, except for the downcast: cli: struct cli_interp *cli = as_cli_interp (interp); tui: struct interp *tui = as_tui_interp (interp); and how they get at the interpreter's ui_out: cli: cli->cli_uiout tui: tui->interp_ui_out () Since interp_ui_out() is a virtual method that also works for the CLI interpreter, and, both the CLI and the TUI interpreters inherit from the same base class (cli_interp_base), we can convert the CLI observers to cast to cli_interp_base instead and use interp_ui_out() too. With that, the CLI observers will work for the TUI interpreter as well. This lets us completely eliminate the TUI observers. That's what this commit does. Extend the 'cli_suppress_notification' struct with a new field, 'normal_stop', that can be used for checking if printing normal stop events on the CLI should be suppressed. This patch only introduces the flag. The subsequent patch adds a user command to turn the flag off/on.

2021-12-17gdb/tui: install SIGWINCH only when connected to a TTYLancelot SIX1-2/+8
PR26056 reports that when GDB is connected to non-TTY stdin/stdout, it crashes when it receives a SIGWINCH signal. This can be reproduced as follows: $ gdb/gdb -nx -batch -ex 'run' --args sleep 60 </dev/null 2>&1 | cat # from another terminal: $ kill -WINCH %(pidof gdb) When doing so, the process crashes in a call to rl_resize_terminal: void rl_resize_terminal (void) { _rl_get_screen_size (fileno (rl_instream), 1); ... } The problem is that at this point rl_instream has the value NULL. The rl_instream variable is supposed to be initialized during a call to readline_initialize_everything, which in a normal startup sequence is called under this call chain: tui_interp::init tui_ensure_readline_initialized rl_initialize readline_initialize_everything In tui_interp::init, we have the following sequence: tui_initialize_io (); tui_initialize_win (); // <- Installs SIGWINCH if (gdb_stdout->isatty ()) tui_ensure_readline_initialized (); // <- Initializes rl_instream This function unconditionally installs the SIGWINCH signal handler (this is done by tui_initialize_win), and then if gdb_stdout is a TTY it initializes readline. Therefore, if stdout is not a TTY, SIGWINCH is installed but readline is not initialized. In such situation rl_instream stays NULL, and when GDB receives a SIGWINCH it calls its handler and in fine tries to access rl_instream leading to the crash. This patch proposes to fix this issue by installing the SIGWINCH signal handler only if GDB is connected to a TTY. Given that this initialization it the only task of tui_initialize_win, this patch moves tui_initialize_win just after the call to tui_ensure_readline_initialized. Tested on x86_64-linux. 2021-11-08gdb: remove bpstat typedef, rename bpstats to bpstatSimon Marchi1-1/+1
I don't find that the bpstat typedef, which hides a pointer, is particularly useful. In fact, it confused me many times, and I just see it as something to remember that adds cognitive load. Also, with C++, we might want to be able to pass bpstats objects by const-reference, not necessarily by pointer. So, remove the bpstat typedef and rename struct bpstats to bpstat (since it represents one bpstat, it makes sense that it is singular). Change-Id: I52e763b6e54ee666a9e045785f686d37b4f5f849

2021-02-08gdb/tui: fix issue with handling the return characterAndrew Burgess1-1/+22
My initial goal was to fix our gdb/testsuite/lib/tuiterm.exp such that it would correctly support (some limited) scrolling of the command window. What I observe is that when sending commands to the tui command window in a test script with: Term::command "p 1" The command window would be left looking like this: (gdb) (gdb) p 1$1 = 1 (gdb) When I would have expected it to look like this: (gdb) p 1 $1 = 1 (gdb) Obviously a bug in our tuiterm.exp library, right??? Wrong! Turns out there's a bug in GDB. If in GDB I enable the tui and then type (slowly) the 'p 1\r' (the \r is pressing the return key at the end of the string), then you do indeed get the "expected" terminal output. However, if instead I copy the 'p 1\r' string and paste it into the tui in one go then I now see the same corrupted output as we do when using tuiterm.exp. It turns out the problem is that GDB fails when handling lots of input arriving quickly with a \r (or \n) on the end. The reason for this bug is as follows: When the tui is active the terminal is in no-echo mode, so characters sent to the terminal are not echoed out again. This means that when the user types \r, this is not echoed to the terminal. The characters read in are passed to readline and \r indicates that the command line is complete and ready to be processed. However, the \r is not included in readlines command buffer, and is NOT printed by readline when is displays its buffer to the screen. So, in GDB we have to manually spot the \r when it is read in and update the display. Printing a newline character to the output and moving the cursor to the next line. This is done in tui_getc_1. Now readline tries to reduce the number of write calls. So if we very quickly (as in paste in one go) the text 'p 1' to readline (this time with no \r on the end), then readline will fetch the fist character and add it to its internal buffer. But before printing the character out readline checks to see if there's more input incoming. As we pasted multiple characters, then yes, readline sees the ' ' and adds this to its buffer, and finally the '1', this too is added to the buffer. Now if at this point we take a break, readline sees there is no more input available, and so prints its buffer out. Now when we press \r the code in tui_getc_1 kicks in, adds a \n to the output and moves the cursor to the next line. But, if instead we paste 'p 1\r' in one go then readline adds 'p 1' to its buffer as before, but now it sees that there is still more input available. Now it fetches the '\r', but this triggers the newline behaviour, we print '\n' and move to the next line - however readline has not printed its buffer yet! So finally we end up on the next line. There's no more input available so readline prints its buffer, then GDB gets passed the buffer, handles it, and prints the result. The solution I think is to put of our special newline insertion code until we know that readline has finished printing its buffer. Handily we know when this is - the next thing readline does is pass us the command line buffer for processing. So all we need to do is hook in to the command line processing, and before we pass the command line to GDB's internals we do all of the magic print a newline and move the cursor to the next line stuff. Luckily, GDB's interpreter mechanism already provides the hooks we need to do this. So all I do here is move the newline printing code from tui_getc_1 into a new function, setup a new input_handler hook for the tui, and call my new newline printing function. After this I can enable the tui and paste in 'p 1\r' and see the correct output. Also the tuiterm.exp library will now see non-corrupted output. gdb/ChangeLog: * tui/tui-interp.c (tui_command_line_handler): New function. 2020-06-16Fix crash when exiting TUI with gdb -tuiTom Tromey1-1/+1
PR tui/25348 points out that, when "gdb -tui" is used, then exiting the TUI will cause a crash. This happens because tui_setup_io stashes some readline variables -- but because this happens before readline is initialized, some of these are NULL. Then, when exiting the TUI, the NULL values are "restored", causing a crash in readline. This patch fixes the problem by ensuring that readline is initialized first. Back in commit 11061048d ("Give a name to the TUI SingleKey keymap"), a call to rl_initialize was removed from tui_initialize_readline; this patch resurrects the call, but moves it to the end of the function, so as not to remove the ability to modify the SingleKey map from .inputrc. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-06-16 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> PR tui/25348: * tui/tui.c (tui_ensure_readline_initialized): Rename from tui_initialize_readline. 2020-01-13gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functionsSimon Marchi1-1/+2
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. I went through most of the spots that include readline.h and, when appropriate, either removed the include or changed it to include tilde.h. Note that remote-sim.c and bsd-kvm.c could probably include tilde.h instead, but I did not change these. I think I can't build the latter, and I didn't want to set up a sim build for the former. This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

With a following patch, find_thread_ptid will first find the inferior for the passed-in ptid, using find_inferior_pid, and then look for the thread in that inferior's thread list. If we pass down null_ptid to find_thread_ptid then that means we'll end up passing 0 to find_inferior_pid, which hits this assertion: > struct inferior * > find_inferior_pid (int pid) > { > struct inferior *inf; > > /* Looking for inferior pid == 0 is always wrong, and indicative of > a bug somewhere else. There may be more than one with pid == 0, > for instance. */ > gdb_assert (pid != 0); This patch prepares for the change, by avoiding passing down null_ptid to find_thread_ptid or to functions that naturally use it, such as the target_pid_to_str call in inferior.c:add_inferior. In that latter case, the patch changes GDB output, from: (gdb) add-inferior [New inferior 2 (process 0)] to: (gdb) add-inferior [New inferior 2] which seems like a good change to me. It might not even make sense to talk about "process" for the current target, for example. This is more preparation bits for multi-target support. In a multi-target scenario, we need to address the case of different processes/threads running on different targets that happen to have the same PID/PTID. E.g., we can have both process 123 in target 1, and process 123 in target 2, while they're in reality different processes running on different machines. Or maybe we've loaded multiple instances of the same core file. Etc. To address this, in my WIP multi-target branch, threads and processes are uniquely identified by the (process_stratum target_ops *, ptid_t) and (process_stratum target_ops *, pid) tuples respectively. I.e., each process_stratum instance has its own thread/process number space. As you can imagine, that requires passing around target_ops * pointers in a number of functions where we're currently passing only a ptid_t or an int. E.g., when we look up a thread_info object by ptid_t in find_thread_ptid, the ptid_t alone isn't sufficient. In many cases though, we already have the thread_info or inferior pointer handy, but we "lose" it somewhere along the call stack, only to look it up again by ptid_t/pid. Since thread_info or inferior objects know their parent target, if we pass around thread_info or inferior pointers when possible, we avoid having to add extra target_ops parameters to many functions, and also, we eliminate a number of by ptid_t/int lookups. So that's what this patch does. In a bit more detail: - Changes a number of functions and methods to take a thread_info or inferior pointer instead of a ptid_t or int parameter. - Changes a number of structure fields from ptid_t/int to inferior or thread_info pointers. - Uses the inferior_thread() function whenever possible instead of inferior_ptid. - Uses thread_info pointers directly when possible instead of the is_running/is_stopped etc. routines that require a lookup. - A number of functions are eliminated along the way, such as: int valid_gdb_inferior_id (int num); int pid_to_gdb_inferior_id (int pid); int gdb_inferior_id_to_pid (int num); int in_inferior_list (int pid); - A few structures and places hold a thread_info pointer across inferior execution, so now they take a strong reference to the (refcounted) thread_info object to avoid the thread_info pointer getting stale. This converts observers from using a special source-generating script to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11 by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change eliminates the need for a clean rebuild). Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template function. - The interp->data field disappears, since we can put data in the interpreter directly now. The "init" method remains in place, but it now returns void. - A few places check if the interpreter method is NULL before calling it, and also check whether the method returns true/false. For some of those methods, all current implementations always return true. In those cases, this commit makes the C++-fied method return void instead and cleans up the callers. With this patch, when an inferior, thread or frame is explicitly selected by the user, notifications will appear on all CLI and MI UIs. When a GDB console is integrated in a front-end, this allows the front-end to follow a selection made by the user ont he CLI, and it informs the user about selection changes made behind the scenes by the front-end. This patch addresses PR gdb/20487. In order to communicate frame changes to the front-end, this patch adds a new field to the =thread-selected event for the selected frame. The idea is that since inferior/thread/frame can be seen as a composition, it makes sense to send them together in the same event. The vision would be to eventually send the inferior information as well, if we find that it's needed, although the "=thread-selected" event would be ill-named for that job. Front-ends need to handle this new field if they want to follow the frame selection changes that originate from the console. The format of the frame attribute is the same as what is found in the *stopped events. Here's a detailed example for each command and the events they generate: thread ------ 1. All interpreter types (CLI/TUI/MI) print the prompt, and then call start_event_loop. Because we'll need an interpreter hook to display the interpreter-specific prompt before going back to the event loop, without actually starting an event loop, this patch moves the start_event_loop call to common code, and replaces the command_loop hook with a pre_command_look hook, that now just prints the prompt. Due to the way that readline's API works (based on globals), we can only have one instance of readline in a process. So the goal of this patch is to only allow editing in the main UI, and make sure that only one UI calls into readline. Some MI paths touch readline variables currently, which is bad as that is changing variables that matter for the main console UI. This patch fixes those. This actually fixes a nasty bug -- starting gdb in MI mode ("gdb -i=mi"), and then doing "set editing on" crashes GDB, because MI is not prepared to use readline: set editing on &"set editing on\n" =cmd-param-changed,param="editing",value="on" ^done (gdb) p 1 readline: readline_callback_read_char() called with no handler! Aborted (core dumped) The fix for that was to add an interp_proc method to query the interpreter whether it actually supports editing. When we have multiple consoles, MI channels, etc., then we need to broadcast breakpoint hits, etc. to all UIs. In the past, I've adjusted most of the run control to communicate events to the interpreters through observer notifications, so events would be properly sent to console and MI streams, in sync and async modes. This patch does the next logical step -- have each interpreter's observers output interpreter-specific info to _all_ UIs. Note that when we have multiple instances of active cli/tui interpreters, then the cli_interp and tui_interp globals no longer work. This is addressed by this patch. Also, the interpreters currently register some observers when resumed and remove them when suspended. If we have multiple instances of the interpreters, and they can be suspended/resumed at different, independent times, that no longer works. What we instead do is always install the observers, and then have the observers themselves know when to do nothing. An earlier prototype of this series did the looping over struct UIs in common code, and then dispatched events to the interpreters through a matching interp_on_foo method for each observer. This adds an object oriented replacement for the "struct continuation" mechanism, and converts the stepping commands (step, next, stepi, nexti) and the "finish" commands to use it. It adds a new thread "class" (struct thread_fsm) that contains the necessary info and callbacks to manage the state machine of a thread's execution command. This allows getting rid of some hacks. E.g., in fetch_inferior_event and normal_stop we no longer need to know whether a thread is doing a multi-step (e.g., step N). This effectively makes the intermediate_continuations unused -- they'll be garbage collected in a separate patch. (They were never a proper abstraction, IMO. See how fetch_inferior_event needs to check step_multi before knowing whether to call INF_EXEC_CONTINUE or INF_EXEC_COMPLETE.) The target async vs !async uiout hacks in mi_on_normal_stop go away too. print_stop_event is no longer called from normal_stop. Instead it is now called from within each interpreter's normal_stop observer. This clears the path to make each interpreter print a stop event the way it sees fit. Currently we have some hacks in common code to differenciate CLI vs TUI vs MI around this area. The "finish" command's FSM class stores the return value plus that value's position in the value history, so that those can be printed to both MI and CLI's streams. PR tui/16138 is about failure to initialize curses resulting in GDB exiting instead of throwing an error. E.g.: $ TERM=foo gdb (gdb) layout asm Error opening terminal: foo. $ The problem is that we're calling initscr to initialize the screen. As mentioned in http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/7908799/xcurses/initscr.html: If errors occur, initscr() writes an appropriate error message to standard error and exits. ^^^^^ Instead, we should use newterm: "A program that needs an indication of error conditions, so it can continue to run in a line-oriented mode if the terminal cannot support a screen-oriented program, would also use this function." After the patch: $ TERM=foo gdb -q -nx (gdb) layout asm Cannot enable the TUI: error opening terminal [TERM=foo] (gdb) And then PR tui/17519 is about GDB not validating whether the terminal has the necessary capabilities when enabling the TUI. If one tries to enable the TUI with TERM=dumb (and e.g., from a shell within emacs), GDB ends up with a clear screen, the cursor is placed at the bottom/right corner of the screen, there's no prompt, typing shows no echo, and there's no indication of what's going on. c-x,a gets you out of the TUI, but it's completely non-obvious. After the patch, we get: $ TERM=dumb gdb -q -nx (gdb) layout asm Cannot enable the TUI: terminal doesn't support cursor addressing [TERM=dumb] (gdb) While at it, I've moved all the tui_allowed_p validation to tui_enable, and expanded the error messages.
