2024-02-20gdb: pass frames as `const frame_info_ptr &`Simon Marchi1-1/+1
We currently pass frames to function by value, as `frame_info_ptr`. This is somewhat expensive: - the size of `frame_info_ptr` is 64 bytes, which is a bit big to pass by value - the constructors and destructor link/unlink the object in the global `frame_info_ptr::frame_list` list. This is an `intrusive_list`, so it's not so bad: it's just assigning a few points, there's no memory allocation as if it was `std::list`, but still it's useless to do that over and over. As suggested by Tom Tromey, change many function signatures to accept `const frame_info_ptr &` instead of `frame_info_ptr`. Some functions reassign their `frame_info_ptr` parameter, like: void the_func (frame_info_ptr frame) { for (; frame != nullptr; frame = get_prev_frame (frame)) { ... } } I wondered what to do about them, do I leave them as-is or change them (and need to introduce a separate local variable that can be re-assigned). I opted for the later for consistency. It might not be clear why some functions take `const frame_info_ptr &` while others take `frame_info_ptr`. Also, if a function took a `frame_info_ptr` because it did re-assign its parameter, I doubt that we would think to change it to `const frame_info_ptr &` should the implementation change such that it doesn't need to take `frame_info_ptr` anymore. This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.

The TUI status line is called the "status" window in the documentation, but not in the source. There, the relevant files are named "tui-stack", which to me makes it sound like they have something to do with backtraces. This patch renames them to "tui-status".
2023-11-21gdb: Replace gdb::optional with std::optionalLancelot Six1-1/+1
Since GDB now requires C++17, we don't need the internally maintained gdb::optional implementation. This patch does the following replacing: - gdb::optional -> std::optional - gdb::in_place -> std::in_place - #include "gdbsupport/gdb_optional.h" -> #include <optional> This change has mostly been done automatically. One exception is gdbsupport/thread-pool.* which did not use the gdb:: prefix as it already lives in the gdb namespace. The '2' represents the total size of the window border (or box, in can_box terms), in this case one line at the top and one line at the bottom. Likewise, '1' is used to represent the width of the window border. Introduce new functions: - tui_win_info::box_width () and - tui_win_info::box_size () that can be used instead instead of these hardcoded constants. Implement these such that they return 0 when can_box () == false. 2023-10-10gdb: add inferior::{arch, set_arch}Simon Marchi1-1/+1
Make the inferior's gdbarch field private, and add getters and setters. This helped me by allowing putting breakpoints on set_arch to know when the inferior's arch was set. A subsequent patch in this series also adds more things in set_arch. 2023-09-28[gdb/tui] Fix segfault in tui_find_disassembly_addressTom de Vries1-0/+39
PR29040 describes a FAIL for test-case gdb.threads/next-fork-other-thread.exp and target board unix/-m32. The FAIL happens due to the test executable running into an assert, which is caused by a forked child segfaulting, like so: ... Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. #0 0x00000000 in ?? () ... I tried to reproduce the segfault with exec next-fork-other-thread-fork, using TUI layout asm. I set a breakpoint at fork and ran to the breakpoint, and somewhere during the following session I ran into a gdb segfault here in tui_find_disassembly_address: ... /* Disassemble forward. */ next_addr = tui_disassemble (gdbarch, asm_lines, new_low, max_lines); last_addr = asm_lines.back ().addr; ... due to asm_lines being empty after the call to tui_disassemble, while asm_lines.back () assumes that it's not empty. I have not been able to reproduce that segfault in that original setting, I'm not sure of the exact scenario (though looking back it probably involved "set detach-on-fork off"). What likely happened is that I managed to reproduce PR29040, and TUI (attempted to) display the disassembly for address 0, which led to the gdb segfault. When gdb_print_insn encounters an insn it cannot print because it can't read the memory, it throws a MEMORY_ERROR that is caught by tui_disassemble. The specific bit that causes the gdb segfault is that if gdb_print_insn throws a MEMORY_ERROR for the first insn in tui_disassemble, it returns an empty asm_lines. FWIW, I did manage to reproduce the gdb segfault as follows: ... $ gdb -q \ -iex "set pagination off" \ /usr/bin/rustc \ -ex "set breakpoint pending on" \ -ex "b dl_main" \ -ex run \ -ex "up 4" \ -ex "layout asm" \ -ex "print \$pc" ... <TUI> ... $1 = (void (*)()) 0x1 (gdb) ... Now press <up>, and the segfault triggers. Fix the segfault by handling asm_lines.empty () results of tui_disassemble in tui_find_disassembly_address. This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info * The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands: sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/' sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some issues in a few files, that were manually fixed. sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace problems. 2022-01-26gdb: add string_file::release methodSimon Marchi1-4/+2
A common pattern for string_file is to want to move out the internal string buffer, because it is the result of the computation that we want to return. It is the reason why string_file::string returns a non-const reference, as explained in the comment. I think it would make sense to have a dedicated method for that instead and make string_file::string return a const reference. This allows removing the explicit std::move in the typical case. Note that compile_program::compute was missing a move, meaning that the resulting string was copied. With the new version, it's not possible to forget to move. 2021-06-28gdb: convert obj_section macros to methodsSimon Marchi1-1/+1
Convert these three macros to methods of obj_section. The problem fixed by the following patch is caused by an out of bound access of the objfile::section_offsets vector. Since this is deep in macros, we don't get a clear backtrace and it's difficult to debug. Changing that to methods means we can step in them and break on them. Because their implementation requires knowing about struct objfile, move struct obj_section below struct objfile in objfiles.h. The obj_section_offset was used in one place as an lvalue to set offsets, in machoread.c. Replace that with a set_offset method. Add the objfile::section_offset and objfile::set_section_offset methods to improve encapsulation (reduce other objects poking into struct objfile's internals). gdb/ChangeLog: * objfiles.h (struct obj_section): Move down. <offset, set_offset, addr, endaddr>: New. The problem is in len_without_escapes, where we detect the start of an escape sequence, but then pass ptr to style.parse while ptr no longer points to the escape due to the ptr++ in the while condition: ... while ((c = *ptr++) != '\0') { if (c == '\033') { ui_file_style style; size_t n_read; if (style.parse (ptr, &n_read)) ... Fix this by removing the ++ in the while condition, and adding ptr++ in the loop body where appropriate. 2021-01-28gdb/tui: remove special handling of locator/status windowAndrew Burgess1-8/+5
The locator window, or status window as it is sometimes called is handled differently to all the other windows. The reason for this is that the class representing this window (tui_locator_window) does two jobs, first this class represents a window just like any other that has space on the screen and fills the space with content. The second job is that this class serves as a storage area to hold information about the current location that the TUI windows represent, so the class has members like 'addr' and 'line_no', for example which are used within this class, and others when they want to know which line/address the TUI windows should be showing to the user. Because of this dual purpose we must always have an instance of the tui_locator_window so that there is somewhere to store this location information. The result of this is that the locator window must never be deleted like other windows, which results in some special case code. In this patch I propose splitting the two roles of the tui_locator_window class. The tui_locator_window class will retain just its window drawing parts, and will be treated just like any other window. This should allow all special case code for this window to be deleted. The other role, that of tracking the current tui location will be moved into a new class (tui_location_tracker), of which there will be a single global instance. All of the places where we previously use the locator window to get location information will now be updated to get this from the tui_location_tracker. 2020-11-02gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issuesSimon Marchi1-10/+10
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix This is an important step toward properly handling non-ASCII characters, because it makes it easy to scroll horizontally without needing gdb to also understand multi-byte character boundaries -- this can be wholly delegated to curses. 2020-01-31gdb/tui: Disassembler scrolling of very small programsAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
In TUI mode, if the disassembly output for the program is less than one screen long, then currently if the user scrolls down until on the last assembly instruction is displayed and then tries to scroll up using Page-Up, the display doesn't update - they are stuck viewing the last line. If the user tries to scroll up using the Up-Arrow, then the display scrolls normally. What is happening is on the Page-Up we ask GDB to scroll backward the same number of lines as the height of the TUI ASM window. The back scanner, which looks for a good place to start disassembling, fails to find a starting address which will provide the requested number of new lines before we get back to the original starting address (which is not surprising, our whole program contains less than a screen height of instructions), as a result the back scanner gives up and returns the original starting address. When we scroll with Up-Arrow we only ask the back scanner to find 1 new instruction, which it manages to do, so this scroll works. The solution here is, when we fail to find enough instructions, to return the lowest address we did manage to find. 2020-01-24gdb/tui: asm window handles invalid memory and scrolls betterAndrew Burgess1-60/+183
This started as a patch to enable the asm window to handle attempts to disassemble invalid memory, but it ended up expanding into a significant rewrite of how the asm window handles scrolling. These two things ended up being tied together as it was impossible to correctly test scrolling into invalid memory when the asm window would randomly behave weirdly while scrolling. Things that should work nicely now; scrolling to the bottom or top of the listing with PageUp, PageDown, Up Arrow, Down Arrow and we should be able to scroll past small areas of memory that don't have symbols associated with them. It should also be possible to scroll to the start of a section even if there's no symbol at the start of the section. Adding tests for this scrolling was a little bit of a problem. First I would have liked to add tests for PageUp / PageDown, but the tuiterm library we use doesn't support these commands right now due to only emulating a basic ascii terminal. Changing this to emulate a more complex terminal would require adding support for more escape sequence control codes, so I've not tried to tackle that in this patch. Next, I would have liked to test scrolling to the start or end of the assembler listing and then trying to scroll even more, however, this is a problem because in a well behaving GDB a scroll at the start/end has no effect. What we need to do is: - Move to start of assembler listing, - Send scroll up command, - Wait for all curses output, - Ensure the assembler listing is unchanged, we're still at the start of the listing. The problem is that there is no curses output, so how long do we wait at step 3? The same problem exists for scrolling to the bottom of the assembler listing. 2020-01-06GDB: Fix the overflow in addr/line_is_displayed()Shahab Vahedi1-9/+7
In tui_disasm_window::addr_is_displayed(), there can be situations where "content" is empty. For instance, it can happen when the "content" was not filled in tui_disasm_window::set_contents(), because tui_disassemble() threw an exception. Usually this exception is the result of fetching invalid PC addresses like the ones beyond the end of the program. Having "content.size ()" zero leads to an overflow in this condition check inside tui_disasm_window::addr_is_displayed(): int i = 0; while (i < content.size () - threshold ...) { ... content[i] ... } "threshold" is 2 and there are times that "content.size ()" is 0. This results into an overflow and the loop is entered whereas it should have been skipped. Finally, "content[i]" access leads to a segmentation fault. Same problem applies to tui_source_window::line_is_displayed(). 2019-08-16Remove the TUI execution info windowTom Tromey1-1/+1
The TUI execution info window is unusual in that it is always linked to a source or disassembly window. Even updates of its content are handled by the source window, so it really has no life of its own. This patch removes this window entirely and puts its functionality directly into the source window. This simplifies the code somewhat. This is a user-visible change, because now the box around the source (or disassembly) window encloses the execution info as well. I consider this an improvement as well, though.
