This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.

Commit f99d1d37496f ("Remove gdb/testsuite/configure") removed gdb/testsuite/configure, as anything gdb/testsuite/configure did could be done by gdb/configure. There is however one use case that popped up when this changed propagated to downstream consumers, to run the testsuite on an already built GDB. In the workflow of ROCm-GDB at AMD, a GDB package is built in a CI job. This GDB package is then tested on different machines / hardware configurations as part of other CI jobs. To achieve this, those CI jobs only configure the testsuite directory and run "make check" with an appropriate board file. In light of this use case, the way I see it is that gdb/testsuite could be considered its own project. It could be stored in a completely different repo if we want to, it just happens to be stored inside gdb/. Since the only downside of having gdb/testsuite/configure is that it takes a few more seconds to run, but on the other hand it's quite useful for some people, I propose re-adding it. 2021-06-01Remove gdb/testsuite/configureTom Tromey1-99/+0
I didn't see a strong reason to have a separate configure script in gdb/testsuite, so this patch removes it. The few relevant configury bits are moved into gdb's configure script. Some of the old testsuite/configure script (e.g., the header check) is dead code. This also adds a Makefile rule to rebuild lib/pdtrace. This was missing from the old code. 'read1' is now a dependency of check-read1, rather than extra code at configure time. Finally, the old "ENABLE_LIBCTF" subst in gdb/configure was not used; nor was the variable defined, so this was always empty. This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-06-19Bump to autoconf 2.69 and automake 1.15.1Simon Marchi1-1/+0
When trying to run the update-gnulib.sh script in gdb, I get this: Error: Wrong automake version (Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/\${ <-- HERE ([^ =:+{}]+)}/ at /opt/automake/1.11.1/bin/automake line 4113.), we need 1.11.1. Aborting. Apparently, it's an issue with a regex in automake that triggers a warning starting with Perl 5.22. It has been fixed in automake 1.15.1. So I think it's a good excuse to bump the versions of autoconf and automake used in the gnulib import. And to avoid requiring multiple builds of autoconf/automake, it was suggested that we bump the required version of those tools for all binutils-gdb. For autoconf, the 2.69 version is universally available, so it's an easy choice. For automake, different distros and distro versions have different automake versions. But 1.15.1 seems to be the most readily available as a package. In any case, it's easy to build it from source. I removed the version checks from AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS and AC_PREREQ, because I don't think they are useful in our case. They only specify a lower bound for the acceptable version of automake/autoconf. That's useful if you let the user choose the version of the tool they want to use, but want to set a minimum version (because you use a feature that was introduced in that version). In our case, we force people to use a specific version anyway. For the autoconf version, we have the check in config/override.m4 that enforces the version we want. It will be one less thing to update next time we change autotools version. I hit a few categories of problems that required some changes. They are described below along with the chosen solutions. Problem 1: configure.ac:17: warning: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: two- and three-arguments forms are deprecated. For more info, see: configure.ac:17: http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Modernize-AM_005fINIT_005fAUTOMAKE-invocation Solution 1: Adjust the code based on the example at that URL. Problem 2 (in zlib/): Makefile.am: error: required file './INSTALL' not found Makefile.am: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'INSTALL' Makefile.am: error: required file './NEWS' not found Makefile.am: error: required file './AUTHORS' not found Makefile.am: error: required file './COPYING' not found Makefile.am: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'COPYING' Solution 2: Add the foreign option to AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS. Problem 3: doc/Makefile.am:20: error: support for Cygnus-style trees has been removed Solution 3: Remove the cygnus options. Problem 4: Makefile.am:656: warning: 'INCLUDES' is the old name for 'AM_CPPFLAGS' (or '*_CPPFLAGS') Solution 4: Rename "INCLUDES = " to "AM_CPPFLAGS += " (because AM_CPPFLAGS is already defined earlier). Problem 5: doc/Makefile.am:71: warning: suffix '.texinfo' for Texinfo files is discouraged; use '.texi' instead doc/Makefile.am: warning: Oops! doc/Makefile.am: It appears this file (or files included by it) are triggering doc/Makefile.am: an undocumented, soon-to-be-removed automake hack. doc/Makefile.am: Future automake versions will no longer place in the builddir doc/Makefile.am: (rather than in the srcdir) the generated '.info' files that doc/Makefile.am: appear to be cleaned, by e.g. being listed in CLEANFILES or doc/Makefile.am: DISTCLEANFILES. doc/Makefile.am: If you want your '.info' files to be placed in the builddir doc/Makefile.am: rather than in the srcdir, you have to use the shiny new doc/Makefile.am: 'info-in-builddir' automake option. We also have one in texinfo/texinfo.tex, not sure if we should point to that, or move it (or a newer version of it added with automake --add-missing) to top-level. Problem 8: Makefile.am:131: warning: source file 'config/tc-aarch64.c' is in a subdirectory, Makefile.am:131: but option 'subdir-objects' is disabled automake: warning: possible forward-incompatibility. automake: At least a source file is in a subdirectory, but the 'subdir-objects' automake: automake option hasn't been enabled. For now, the corresponding output automake: object file(s) will be placed in the top-level directory. However, automake: this behaviour will change in future Automake versions: they will automake: unconditionally cause object files to be placed in the same subdirectory automake: of the corresponding sources. automake: You are advised to start using 'subdir-objects' option throughout your automake: project, to avoid future incompatibilities. Solution 8: Use subdir-objects, that means adjusting references to some .o that will now be in config/. Since GNU make is now required to build GDB, we can remove everything that checks whether the current make implemention is the GNU one or not. I simply removed the @GMAKE_TRUE@ prefixes and removed the whole lines that were prefixed with @GMAKE_FALSE@. I removed the code in the configure scripts that set those variables. I also removed the following bits from the configure scripts: AC_CHECK_PROGS(MAKE, make): GNU make already defines a MAKE variable internally to be used when invoking Makefiles recursively. I don't see this variable being used anywhere else (in scripts for example), so I think it's safe for removal. AC_PROG_MAKE_SET: This macro defines a SET_MAKE output variable, which is meant to be used in Makefiles to define the MAKE variable when using an implementation of make that doesn't already define it. Since we are now requiring GNU make, we don't need it anymore. Using AC_OUTPUT with arguments has been deprecated for some time in autoconf, even in version 2.64, which we are using. This change should not affect functionality. When running tests in parallel, each test puts its generated files in a different directory, under "outputs". I think it would be nice if it was always the case, as it would isolate the test cases a bit more. An artifact created by a test wouldn't get overwritten by another test. Also, it makes it easier to clean up. A lot of executables are left all over the place because their names do not appear in gdb.*/Makefile. If everything is in "outputs", then we just have to delete that directory (which we already do). At the same time it makes the gdb.foo directories and their Makefiles useless in the build directory, since they are pretty much only used for cleaning. This final patch adds the new "compile" command and subcommands, and all the machinery needed to make it work. A shared library supplied by gcc is used for all communications with gcc. Types and most aspects of symbols are provided directly by gdb to the compiler using this library. gdb provides some information about the user's code using plain text. Macros are emitted this way, and DWARF location expressions (and bounds for VLA) are compiled to C code. This hybrid approach was taken because, on the one hand, it is better to provide global declarations and such on demand; but on the other hand, for local variables, translating DWARF location expressions to C was much simpler than exporting a full compiler API to gdb -- the same result, only easier to implement, understand, and debug. In the ordinary mode, the user's expression is wrapped in a dummy function. After compilation, gdb inserts the resulting object code into the inferior, then calls this function. Access to local variables is provided by noting which registers are used by location expressions, and passing a structure of register values into the function. Writes to registers are supported by copying out these values after the function returns. Tests in gdb.gdb fail because directory gdb/testsuite/gdb.gdb doesn't exist in build tree. This patch appends gdb.gdb/Makefile in AC_OUTPUT, and adds new Makefile.in in gdb.gdb, so that directory gdb.gdb can be created during configure.
