2024-05-30gdb: remove unused includes in utils.hSimon Marchi1-0/+1
Remove some includes reported as unused by clangd. Add some includes in other files that were previously relying on the transitive include. Change-Id: Ibdd0a998b04d21362a20d0ca8e5267e21e2e133e
2024-04-25gdb: remove gdbcmd.hSimon Marchi1-1/+1
Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through the 170 or so files by hand. 2024-03-26gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: remove includes of early headersSimon Marchi1-1/+0
Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the `-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update the generation scripts where relevant. Change-Id: Ia026cff269c1b7ae7386dd3619bc9bb6a5332837 Approved-By: Pedro Alves <pedro@palves.net>
2024-02-06gdb: remove core_bfd macroSimon Marchi1-3/+3
The core_bfd macro hides a use of current_program_space. Remove it, so that we have the opportunity to get the program space from the context, if possible. I guess that the macro was introduced at some point to replace a global variable of the same name without changing all the uses. 2024-01-12Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDBAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.
2023-11-29Remove gdb_static_assertTom Tromey1-3/+3
C++17 makes the second parameter to static_assert optional, so we can remove gdb_static_assert now.
2023-10-10gdb: remove target_gdbarchSimon Marchi1-1/+1
This function is just a wrapper around the current inferior's gdbarch. I find that having that wrapper just obscures where the arch is coming from, and that it's often used as "I don't know which arch to use so I'll use this magical target_gdbarch function that gets me an arch" when the arch should in fact come from something in the context (a thread, objfile, symbol, etc). I think that removing it and inlining `current_inferior ()->arch ()` everywhere will make it a bit clearer where that arch comes from and will trigger people into reflecting whether this is the right place to get the arch or not. 2023-10-10gdb: add inferior::{arch, set_arch}Simon Marchi1-1/+1
Make the inferior's gdbarch field private, and add getters and setters. This helped me by allowing putting breakpoints on set_arch to know when the inferior's arch was set. A subsequent patch in this series also adds more things in set_arch. 2023-02-27Catch gdb_exception_error instead of gdb_exception (in many places)Kevin Buettner1-1/+1
As described in the previous commit for this series, I became concerned that there might be instances in which a QUIT (due to either a SIGINT or SIGTERM) might not cause execution to return to the top level. In some (though very few) instances, it is okay to not propagate the exception for a Ctrl-C / SIGINT, but I don't think that it is ever okay to swallow the exception caused by a SIGTERM. Allowing that to happen would definitely be a deviation from the current behavior in which GDB exits upon receipt of a SIGTERM. I looked at all cases where an exception handler catches a gdb_exception. Handlers which did NOT need modification were those which satisifed one or more of the following conditions: 1) There is no call path to maybe_quit() in the try block. I used a static analysis tool to help make this determination. In instances where the tool didn't provide an answer of "yes, this call path can result in maybe_quit() being called", I reviewed it by hand. 2) The catch block contains a throw for conditions that it doesn't want to handle; these "not handled" conditions must include the quit exception and the new "forced quit" exception. 3) There was (also) a catch for gdb_exception_quit. Any try/catch blocks not meeting the above conditions could potentially swallow a QUIT exception. My first thought was to add catch blocks for gdb_exception_quit and then rethrow the exception. But Pedro pointed out that this can be handled without adding additional code by simply catching gdb_exception_error instead. That's what this patch series does. There are some oddball cases which needed to be handled differently, plus the extension languages, but those are handled in later patches. 2023-01-01Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDBJoel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script, which automated the update of the copyright year range for all source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include year 2023.
2022-08-03Use gdb_bfd_ref_ptr in objfileTom Tromey1-2/+2
This changes struct objfile to use a gdb_bfd_ref_ptr. In addition to removing some manual memory management, this fixes a use-after-free that was introduced by the registry rewrite series. The issue there was that, in some cases, registry shutdown could refer to memory that had already been freed. This help fix the bug by delaying the destruction of the BFD reference (and thus the per-bfd object) until after the registry has been shut down.
2022-03-04Mark vDSO as not a fileTom Tromey1-1/+1
The vDSO objfile is not a real file, so mark it as such. I noticed this because, when playing with debuginfod, I saw: Downloading 0.01 MB separate debug info for /tmp/system-supplied DSO at 0x7ffff7fc9000 That "/tmp" is wrong -- it's just gdb's cwd. This patch corrects the problem, resulting in: Downloading 0.01 MB separate debug info for system-supplied DSO at 0x7ffff7fc9000 Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 34.

2020-11-02gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issuesSimon Marchi1-2/+2
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix 2020-10-29Remove the exec_bfd macroTom Tromey1-3/+3
This removes the exec_bfd macro, in favor of new accessors on program_space. 2020-10-25gdb: use inferior parameter in add_vsyscall_pageSimon Marchi1-1/+2
Use the new inferior parameter instead of target_gdbarch. There are still hidden references to the current context behind core_bfd and exec_bfd, but this seemed better than nothing. gdb/ChangeLog: * symfile-mem.c (add_vsyscall_page): Use inferior parameter instead of target_gdbarch. Change-Id: Iaf5ace555ee8e46cbef5190aca1f6fe639f06677
2020-10-25gdb: add inferior parameter to inferior_created observableSimon Marchi1-1/+1
I think it would make sense for the inferior_created observable to say which inferior is being dealt with, rather than relying on it being the current inferior. This patch adds an inferior parameter to inferior_created, but does not change the callbacks to use it. gdb/ChangeLog: * aix-thread.c (aix_thread_inferior_created): Add inferior parameter. * bsd-uthread.c (bsd_uthread_inferior_created): Likewise. * dummy-frame.c (cleanup_dummy_frames): Likewise. * jit.c (jit_inferior_created): Likewise. * linux-thread-db.c (thread_db_inferior_created): Likewise. * m68k-linux-tdep.c (m68k_linux_inferior_created): Likewise. * observable.h (inferior_created): Likewise. * ravenscar-thread.c (ravenscar_inferior_created): Likewise. * symfile-mem.c (add_vsyscall_page): Likewise. * infcmd.c (post_create_inferior): Pass inferior argument. 2020-10-02gdb: remove arguments from inferior_created observableSimon Marchi1-1/+1
I noticed that non of the listeners of the inferior_created observable used either of the arguments. Remove them. This in turn allows removing the target parameter of post_create_inferior. Tested only by rebuilding. gdb/ChangeLog: * observable.h <inferior_created>: Remove parameters. Update all listeners. * inferior.h (post_create_inferior): Remove target parameter. Update all callers. 2020-05-20PR25993, read of freed memoryAlan Modra1-7/+7
ldmain.c:add_archive_element copies file name pointers from the bfd to a lang_input_statement_type. input->filename = abfd->filename; input->local_sym_name = abfd->filename; This results in stale pointers when twiddling the bfd filename in places like the pe ld after_open. So don't free the bfd filename, and make copies using bfd_alloc memory that won't result in small memory leaks that annoy memory checkers. PR 25993 bfd/ * archive.c (_bfd_get_elt_at_filepos): Don't strdup filename, use bfd_set_filename. * elfcode.h (_bfd_elf_bfd_from_remote_memory): Likewise. * mach-o.c (bfd_mach_o_fat_member_init): Likewise. * opncls.c (bfd_fopen, bfd_openstreamr, bfd_openr_iovec, bfd_openw), (bfd_create): Likewise. (symbol_file_add_from_memory): Make name param a const char* and don't strdup. ld/ * emultempl/pe.em (gld_${EMULATION_NAME}_after_open): Don't copy other_bfd_filename for bfd_set_filename, and test result of bfd_set_filename call. Don't create a new is->filename, simply copy from bfd filename. Free new_name after bfd_set_filename. * emultempl/pep.em (gld_${EMULATION_NAME}_after_open): Likewise.
2020-03-12Fix CORE_ADDR size assertion in symfile-mem.cTom Tromey1-1/+1
symfile-mem.c has some assertions about the size of various types, to ensure that gdb and BFD don't get out of sync in a way that would cause bugs. Once CORE_ADDR is always 64-bit, one of these assertions can fail for a 32-bit BFD build. However, the real requirement here is just that CORE_ADDR is wider -- because this code promotes a bfd_vma to a CORE_ADDR. This patch corrects the assert. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-03-12 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * symfile-mem.c: Update CORE_ADDR size assert.
2020-01-13gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functionsSimon Marchi1-1/+2
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it warns for every _initialize function, for example: CXX dcache.o /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’: /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations] _initialize_dcache (void) ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations, which were removed by this commit: commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9 Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700 Remove unnecessary function prototypes. 2019-09-19bfd_section_* macrosAlan Modra1-3/+3
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage in gas processing. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma), (bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment), (bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags), (bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete. 2019-09-11Introduce bfd_set_filenameTom Tromey1-4/+2
This introduces a new bfd_set_filename function, which is then used in various spots in gdb. This allows for the removal of some casts. bfd/ChangeLog 2019-09-11 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * opncls.c (bfd_set_filename): New function. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-09-11 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * symfile-mem.c (symbol_file_add_from_memory): Use bfd_set_filename. * solib-darwin.c (darwin_bfd_open): Use bfd_set_filename. * solib-aix.c (solib_aix_bfd_open): Use bfd_set_filename.
2019-09-06bfd_get_filenameAlan Modra1-1/+1
This macro says: /* Cast from const char * to char * so that caller can assign to a char * without a warning. */ I reckon that isn't such a good idea since it can result in char* variables where const char* is appropriate. 2019-04-08Rename gdb exception typesTom Tromey1-1/+1
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone. 2019-01-01Update copyright year range in all GDB files.Joel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-04-30Remove new_bfd_refTom Tromey1-1/+1
For gdb_bfd_ref_ptr, gdb already had a convenience function like the new gdb_ref_ptr::new_reference -- called new_bfd_ref. This patch removes it in favor of the new common function. While doing this I also noticed that the comment for gdb_bfd_open was incorrect (in a way related to reference counting), so this patch updates the comment as well. ChangeLog 2018-04-30 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * symfile-mem.c (symbol_file_add_from_memory): Use new_reference. * gdb_bfd.h (new_bfd_ref): Remove. 2018-03-19Convert observers to C++Tom Tromey1-2/+2
This converts observers from using a special source-generating script to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11 by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change eliminates the need for a clean rebuild). Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template function. 2017-10-10Eliminate catch_exceptions/catch_exceptions_with_msgPedro Alves1-38/+19
This patch gets rid of catch_exceptions / catch_exceptions_with_msg. The latter is done mostly by getting rid of the three remaining vestigial libgdb wrapper functions, which are really pointless nowadays. This results in a good number of simplifications. (I checked that Insight doesn't use those functions.) The gdb.mi/mi-pthreads.exp change is necessary because this actually fixes a bug, IMO -- the patch stops MI's -thread-select causing output on the CLI stream. I.e., before: -thread-select 123456789 &"Thread ID 123456789 not known.\n" ^error, msg="Thread ID 123456789 not known." (gdb) After: -thread-select 123456789 ^error, msg="Thread ID 123456789 not known." 2017-01-10Use class to manage BFD reference countsTom Tromey1-3/+4
This introduces a new specialization of gdb::ref_ptr that can be used to manage BFD reference counts. Then it changes most places in gdb to use this new class, rather than explicit reference-counting or cleanups. This patch removes make_cleanup_bfd_unref. If you look you will see a couple of spots using "release" where a use of gdb_bfd_ref_ptr would be cleaner. These will be fixed in the next patch. I think this patch fixes some latent bugs. For example, it seems to me that previously objfpy_add_separate_debug_file leaked a BFD. I'm not 100% certain that the macho_symfile_read_all_oso change is correct. The existing code here is hard for me to follow. One goal of this sort of automated reference counting, though, is to make it more difficult to make logic errors; so hopefully the code is clear now. 2017-01-10 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * windows-tdep.c (windows_xfer_shared_library): Update. * windows-nat.c (windows_make_so): Update. * utils.h (make_cleanup_bfd_unref): Remove. * utils.c (do_bfd_close_cleanup, make_cleanup_bfd_unref): Remove. * symfile.h (symfile_bfd_open) (find_separate_debug_file_in_section): Return gdb_bfd_ref_ptr. * symfile.c (read_symbols, symbol_file_add) (separate_debug_file_exists): Update. 2016-10-26Make symfile_add_flags and objfile->flags strongly typedPedro Alves1-2/+5
This makes these flag types be "enum flag" types. The benefit is making use of C++'s stronger typing -- mixing the flags types by mistake errors at compile time. This caught one old bug in symbol_file_add_main_1 already, fixed by this patch as well: @@ -1318,7 +1326,7 @@ symbol_file_add_main_1 (const char *args, int from_tty, int flags) what is frameless. */ reinit_frame_cache (); - if ((flags & SYMFILE_NO_READ) == 0) + if ((add_flags & SYMFILE_NO_READ) == 0) set_initial_language (); } Above, "flags" are objfile flags, not symfile_add_flags. So that was actually checking for "flag & OBJF_PSYMTABS_READ", which has the same value as SYMFILE_NO_READ... I moved the flags definitions to separate files to break circular dependencies. 2014-10-10Split vDSO range lookup to a gdbarch hookPedro Alves1-26/+5
We have a case in solib-svr4.c where we could reuse symfile-mem.c's vDSO range lookup. Since symfile-mem.c is not present in all configurations solib-svr4.c is, move that lookup to a gdbarch hook. This has the minor (good) side effect that we stop even trying the target_auxv_search lookup against targets that don't have a concept of a vDSO, in case symfile-mem.c happens to be linked in the build (--enable-targets=all). Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20. gdb/ 2014-10-10 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * arch-utils.c (default_vsyscall_range): New function. * arch-utils.h (default_vsyscall_range): New declaration. * gdbarch.sh (vsyscall_range): New hook. * gdbarch.h, gdbarch.c: Regenerate. * linux-tdep.c (linux_vsyscall_range): New function. 2014-10-08Remove spurious exceptions.h inclusionsGary Benson1-1/+0
defs.h includes utils.h, and utils.h includes exceptions.h. All GDB .c files include defs.h as their first line, so no file other than utils.h needs to include exceptions.h. This commit removes all such inclusions. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c: Do not include exceptions.h. * ada-valprint.c: Likewise. * amd64-tdep.c: Likewise. * auto-load.c: Likewise. * block.c: Likewise. * break-catch-throw.c: Likewise. * breakpoint.c: Likewise. * btrace.c: Likewise. * c-lang.c: Likewise. * cli/cli-cmds.c: Likewise. * cli/cli-interp.c: Likewise. * cli/cli-script.c: Likewise. * completer.c: Likewise. * corefile.c: Likewise. * corelow.c: Likewise. * cp-abi.c: Likewise. * cp-support.c: Likewise. * cp-valprint.c: Likewise. * darwin-nat.c: Likewise. * dwarf2-frame-tailcall.c: Likewise. * dwarf2-frame.c: Likewise. * dwarf2loc.c: Likewise. * dwarf2read.c: Likewise. * eval.c: Likewise. * event-loop.c: Likewise. * event-top.c: Likewise. * f-valprint.c: Likewise. * frame-unwind.c: Likewise. * frame.c: Likewise. * gdbtypes.c: Likewise. * gnu-v2-abi.c: Likewise. * gnu-v3-abi.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-auto-load.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-breakpoint.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-cmd.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-frame.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-lazy-string.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-param.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-symbol.c: Likewise. * guile/scm-type.c: Likewise. * hppa-hpux-tdep.c: Likewise. * i386-tdep.c: Likewise. * inf-loop.c: Likewise. * infcall.c: Likewise. * infcmd.c: Likewise. * infrun.c: Likewise. * interps.c: Likewise. * interps.h: Likewise. * jit.c: Likewise. * linespec.c: Likewise. * linux-nat.c: Likewise. * linux-thread-db.c: Likewise. * m32r-rom.c: Likewise. * main.c: Likewise. * memory-map.c: Likewise. * mi/mi-cmd-break.c: Likewise. * mi/mi-cmd-stack.c: Likewise. * mi/mi-interp.c: Likewise. * mi/mi-main.c: Likewise. * monitor.c: Likewise. * nto-procfs.c: Likewise. * objc-lang.c: Likewise. * p-valprint.c: Likewise. * parse.c: Likewise. * ppc-linux-tdep.c: Likewise. * printcmd.c: Likewise. * probe.c: Likewise. * python/py-auto-load.c: Likewise. * python/py-breakpoint.c: Likewise. * python/py-cmd.c: Likewise. * python/py-finishbreakpoint.c: Likewise. * python/py-frame.c: Likewise. * python/py-framefilter.c: Likewise. * python/py-function.c: Likewise. * python/py-gdb-readline.c: Likewise. * python/py-inferior.c: Likewise. * python/py-infthread.c: Likewise. * python/py-lazy-string.c: Likewise. * python/py-linetable.c: Likewise. * python/py-param.c: Likewise. * python/py-prettyprint.c: Likewise. * python/py-symbol.c: Likewise. * python/py-type.c: Likewise. * python/py-value.c: Likewise. * python/python-internal.h: Likewise. * python/python.c: Likewise. * record-btrace.c: Likewise. * record-full.c: Likewise. * regcache.c: Likewise. * remote-fileio.c: Likewise. * remote-mips.c: Likewise. * remote.c: Likewise. * rs6000-aix-tdep.c: Likewise. * rs6000-nat.c: Likewise. * skip.c: Likewise. * solib-darwin.c: Likewise. * solib-dsbt.c: Likewise. * solib-frv.c: Likewise. * solib-ia64-hpux.c: Likewise. * solib-spu.c: Likewise. * solib-svr4.c: Likewise. * solib.c: Likewise. * spu-tdep.c: Likewise. * stack.c: Likewise. * stap-probe.c: Likewise. * symfile-mem.c: Likewise. * symmisc.c: Likewise. * target.c: Likewise. * thread.c: Likewise. * top.c: Likewise. * tracepoint.c: Likewise. * tui/tui-interp.c: Likewise. * typeprint.c: Likewise. * utils.c: Likewise. * valarith.c: Likewise. * valops.c: Likewise. * valprint.c: Likewise. * value.c: Likewise. * varobj.c: Likewise. * windows-nat.c: Likewise. * xml-support.c: Likewise.
2014-06-06symfile, vdso: remove target sectionsMarkus Metzger1-17/+1
Target sections added by the add-symbol-file-from-memory command are not removed when the process exits. In fact, they are not removed, at all. This causes GDB to crash in gdb.base/break-interp.exp. Change the owner of those target sections to the object file generated in symbol_file_add_from_memory and generalize the free_objfile observer in symfile.c to remove target sections of any freed object file.
