An earlier patch pointed out that nothing in GDB sets void_context_p
when parsing an expression. This patch fixes this omission.
"print" and "call" differ in that the former will print a value that
has void type, while the latter will not. AdaCore has had a patch for
a long time that uses this distinction to help with overload
resolution. In particular, in a "call" context, a procedure will be
chosen, while in a "print" context, a zero-argument function will be
chosen instead.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 32.

For the expression rewrite series, I needed to move enum noside
earlier in expression.h. Because this is a pure move, and because it
seems harmless and uncontroversial to move an enum definition earlier
in a file, I'm pushing it in early, to reduce the size of that series.
Tested by rebuilding.

This adds a new helper method, expression::first_opcode, that extracts
the outermost opcode of an expression. This simplifies some patches
in the expression rewrite series.
Note that this patch requires the earlier patch to avoid manual
dissection of OP_TYPE operations.

I noticed hat evaluate_subexp_do_call takes an array of arguments and
a count -- but, unlike the usual convention, the count does not
include the first element.
This patch changes this function to match call_function_by_hand --
passing the callee separately, and using an array_view for the
arguments. This makes it simpler to understand.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 28.

This removes ada-operator.def and fortran-operator.def, merging their
contents into std-operator.def.
Note that the comment for OP_EXTENDED0 is a bit wrong. IMO this
constant could be removed, as it is only used for a single assert that
does not provide much value. However, I haven't done so here.

enum exp_opcode is created from all the .def files, but then each
language is required to implement its own op_name function to turn an
enum value to a string. This seemed over-complicated to me, and this
patch removes the per-language functions in favor of simply using the
.def names for all languages. Note that op_name is only used for
dumping expressions, which is a maintainer/debug feature.
Furthermore, I don't think there was any case where the .def name and
the string name differed.

With this commit GDB now understands the syntax of Fortran array
strides, a user can type an expression including an array stride, but
they will only get an error informing them that array strides are not
supported.
This alone is an improvement on what we had before in GDB, better to
give the user a helpful message that a particular feature is not
supported than to just claim a syntax error.
Before:
(gdb) p array (1:10:2, 2:10:2)
A syntax error in expression, near `:2, 2:10:2)'.
Now:
(gdb) p array (1:10:2, 2:10:2)
Fortran array strides are not currently supported
Later commits will allow GDB to handle array strides correctly.

To avoid confusion with other parts of GDB relating to types and
ranges, rename this enum to make it clearer that it is a set of
individual flags rather than an enumeration of different types of
range.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

The expression range_type enum represents the following ideas:
- Lower bound is set to default,
- Upper bound is set to default,
- Upper bound is exclusive.
There are currently 6 entries in the enum to represent the combination
of all those ideas.
In a future commit I'd like to add stride information to the range,
this could in theory appear with any of the existing enum entries, so
this would take us to 12 enum entries.
This feels like its getting a little out of hand, so in this commit I
switch the range_type enum over to being a flags style enum. There's
one entry to represent no flags being set, then 3 flags to represent
the 3 ideas above. Adding stride information will require adding only
one more enum flag.
I've then gone through and updated the code to handle this change.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

The Fortran specific OP_F77_UNDETERMINED_ARGLIST is currently handled
in the generic expression handling code. There's no reason why this
should be the case, so this commit moves handling of this into Fortran
specific files.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were
rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes
gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things.
gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this
patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout.
I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the
line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future
build-time savings here.
Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible
that some *-nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of
these. The buildbot caught a few problems along these lines.

Future commits will add more Fortran specific expression operators.
In preparation for these new operators, this commit adds a new
fortran-operator.def file similar to how GDB already has
ada-operator.def.
I've moved UNOP_KIND the Fortran specific operator I introduced in
commit 4d00f5d8f6c4 into this file, and renamed it to make it clearer
that the operator is Fortran specific. I've then updated the Fortran
exp_descriptor table (exp_descriptor_f) to use entirely Fortran
specific functions that now handle UNOP_FORTRAN_KIND (the new name for
UNOP_KIND).
There should be no visible changes for standard users after this
commit, though for developers, the output when 'set debug expression
1' is now better, before:

This changes the parsing API so that callers that are interested in
tracking the innermost block must instantiate an
innermost_block_tracker and pass it in. Then, a pointer to this
object is stored in the parser_state.

This moves the globals and functions related to parsing for completion

expression.h includes symtab.h, but apparently only for the
declaration of struct block. This patch changes it to foward-declare
the structure, and remove the include.

I ran across a comment in symfile.c today:
/* Clear globals which might have pointed into a removed objfile.
FIXME: It's not clear which of these are supposed to persist
between expressions and which ought to be reset each time. */
It seems to me that this can be clarified: the parser entry points
ought to reset the innermost block tracker (and the expression context
block), and these should not be considered valid for code to use at
arbitrary times -- only immediately after an expression has been
parsed.
This patch implements this idea. This could be further improved by
removing the parser globals and changing the parser functions to
return this information, but I have not done this.
Tested by the buildbot.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

-fsanitize=undefined pointed out undefined behavior in
dump_raw_expression like:
runtime error: load of value 2887952, which is not a valid value for type 'exp_opcode'
dump_raw_expression will try to print the opcode for each element of
the expression, even when it is not valid. To allow this, but have it
avoid undefined behavior, this patch sets the underlying type of enum
exp_opcode, and arranges for op_name to handle invalid opcodes more
nicely.
Before this patch, debug-expr.exp shows:

When evaluating Fortran expressions such as the following:
print truth_table(1,1) .OR. truth_table(2,1)
where truth_table(1,1) evaluates to true, the debugger would report that
it could not perform substring operations on this type. This patch
addresses this issue.
Investigation revealed that EVAL_SKIP was not being handled correctly
for all types serviced by the OP_F77_UNDETERMINED_ARGLIST case in
evaluate_subexp_standard. While skipping an undetermined argument list
the type is resolved to be an integer (as this is what evaluate_subexp
returns when skipping) and so it was not possible to delegate to the
appropriate case (e.g. array, function call).
The solution implemented here updates OP_VAR_VALUE to return correct
type information when skipping. This way OP_F77_UNDETERMINED_ARGLIST
can delegate the skipping to the appropriate case or routine, which
should know how to skip/evaluate the type in question.
koenig.exp was updated to include a testcase which exercises the
modified skip logic in OP_VAR_VALUE, as it falls through from
OP_ADL_FUNC.
This patch has been tested for regressions with GCC 7.3 on aarch64,
ppc64le and x86_64.

This is version 2 of the patch to add inclusive range support for
Rust. I believe it addresses all review comments.
Rust recently stabilized the inclusive range feature:
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/28237
An inclusive range is an expression like "..= EXPR" or "EXPR ..=
EXPR". It is like an ordinary range, except the upper bound is
inclusive, not exclusive.
This patch adds support for this feature to gdb.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 27.

When parsing floating-point literals, the language parsers currently
use parse_float or some equivalent routine to parse the input string
into a DOUBLEST, which is then stored within a OP_DOUBLE expression
node. When evaluating the expression, the OP_DOUBLE is finally
converted into a value in target format.
On the other hand, *decimal* floating-point literals are parsed
directly into target format and stored that way in a OP_DECFLOAT
expression node. In order to eliminate the DOUBLEST, this patch
therefore unifies the handling of binary and decimal floating-
point literals and stores them both in target format within a
new OP_FLOAT expression node, replacing both OP_DOUBLE and
OP_DECFLOAT.
In order to store literals in target format, the parse_float
routine needs to know the type of the literal. All parsers
therefore need to be changed to determine the appropriate type
(e.g. by detecting suffixes) *before* calling parse_float,
instead of after it as today. However, this change is mostly
straightforward -- again, this is already done for decimal FP
today.
The core of the literal parsing is moved into a new routine
floatformat_from_string, mirroring floatformat_to_string.
The parse_float routine now calls either floatformat_from_string
or decimal_from_sting, allowing it to handle any type of FP
literal.
All language parsers need to be updated. Some notes on
specific changes to the various languages:
- C: Decimal FP is now handled in parse_float, and no longer
needs to be handled specially.
- D: Straightforward.
- Fortran: Still used a hard-coded "atof", also replaced by
parse_float now. Continues to always use builtin_real_s8
as the type of literal, even though this is probably wrong.
- Go: This used to handle "f" and "l" suffixes, even though
the Go language actually doesn't support those. I kept this
support for now -- maybe revisit later. Note the the GDB
test suite for some reason actually *verifies* that GDB supports
those unsupported suffixes ...
- Pascal: Likewise -- this handles suffixes that are not
supported in the language standard.
- Modula-2: Like Fortran, used to use "atof".
- Rust: Mostly straightforward, except for a unit-testing hitch.
The code use to set a special "unit_testing" flag which would
cause "rust_type" to always return NULL. This makes it not
possible to encode a literal into target format (which type?).
The reason for this flag appears to have been that during
unit testing, there is no "rust_parser" context set up, which
means no "gdbarch" is available to use its types. To fix this,
I removed the unit_testing flag, and instead simply just set up
a dummy rust_parser context during unit testing.
- Ada: This used to check sizeof (DOUBLEST) to determine which
type to use for floating-point literal. This seems questionable
to begin with (since DOUBLEST is quite unrelated to target formats),
and in any case we need to get rid of DOUBLEST. I'm now simply
always using the largest type (builtin_long_double).

The previous patch left GDB with an inconsistency. While with normal
expression evaluation the "unknown return type" error shows the name
of the function that misses debug info:

This commit is a step toward fixing it.
The problem is that while evaluating the expression above, we have no
reference to the minimal symbol where we could extract the name from.
This is because the resulting expression tree has no reference to the
minsym at all. During parsing, the type and address of the minsym are
extracted and an UNOP_MEMVAL / UNOP_MEMVAL_TLS operator is generated
(see write_exp_elt_msym). With "set debug expression", here's what
you see:

The "print" case finds the function name, because
call_function_by_hand looks up the function by address again.
However, for "ptype", we don't reach that code, because obviously we
don't really call the function.
Unlike minsym references, references to variables with debug info have
a pointer to the variable's symbol in the expression tree, with
OP_VAR_VALUE:

so I don't see why do minsyms need to be different. So to prepare for

for minsyms instead of debug symbols. For infcalls, we now get

This patch makes parse_expression and friends return a unique_ptr
instead of raw pointer [1]:
typedef gdb::unique_malloc_ptr<expression> expression_up;
and then adjusts the codebase throughout to stop using cleanups to
manage lifetime of expression pointers.
Whenever I found a structure owning an expression pointer, I made it
store a unique_ptr instead of a raw pointer, which then requires using
new/delete of the holding structure, instead of XNEW/xfree.
[1] - I'd like to set the rule that types named with an "_up" suffix
are unique_ptr typedefs.
Note I used gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr instead of gdb::unique_ptr, simply
because we still use xmalloc instead of new to allocate expression
objects. Once that's changed, all we need to do is change the
expression_up typedef and the smart pointer will then call delete
instead of xfree.

The debugger on Solaris has been broken since the introduction of
DTrace probe support:

No definition of "mutex_t" in current context.
The problem occurs while trying to parse a probe's argument,
and the exception propagates all the way to the top. This patch
fixes the issue by containing the exception and falling back on
using the "long" builtin type if the argument's type could not
be determined.
Also, the parsing should be done using the C language parser.

I didn't try to constify the command hooks themselves, because I know
upfront there are commands that write to the command string argument,
and I think I managed to stop at a nice non-hacky split point already.
I think the only non-really-super-obvious changes are
tracepoint.c:validate_actionline, and tracepoint.c:trace_dump_actions.
The rest is just mostly about 'char *' => 'const char *', 'char **'=>
'const char **', and the occasional (e.g., deprecated_cmd_warning)
case of 'char **'=> 'const char *', where/when I noticed that nothing
actually cares about the pointer to pointer output.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17, native and gdbserver.

To reproduce the problem, simply try the following with any program:
(gdb) maintenance agent-eval 1.0
Critical error handler: process [...] terminated due to access violation
(this is on Windows; on GNU/Linux, the libc copes better)
The problem is quite simple: gen_expr is given an expression that
contains an unrecognized operator (OP_DOUBLE in this case). When that
happens, it tries to report an error with a string image of the operator
in the error message. Conversion of the opcode into a string is done
using op_string which, despite its name, probably is not what the author
was looking for. This function returns NULL for a lot of the opcodes,
thus triggering the crash.
There is a function that corresponds to what we are looking for:
expprint.c:op_name. It was static, though, so I made it non-static,
and used it from ax-gdb.c:gen_expr.
