Add a new ext_lang_find_objfile_from_buildid function which is called
from find_objfile_by_build_id and gives extension languages a chance
to find missing objfiles.
This commit adds the ext_lang_find_objfile_from_buildid function and
the extension_language_ops::find_objfile_from_buildid() hook, but does
not implement the hook for any extension languages, that will come in
the next commit.
This commit does rewrite find_objfile_by_build_id (build-id.c) to call
the new hook though. The basic steps of find_objfile_by_build_id are
now this:
1. Try to find the missing objfile using the build-id by looking in
the debug-file-directory's .build-id/ sub-directory. If we find the
file then we're done.
2. Ask debuginfod to download the missing file for us. If we
download the file successfully then we're done.
3. Ask the extension language hook to find the file for us. If the
extension language asks us to try again then we repeat step (1) only
and if we still don't have the file, we move to step (4). If the
extension language told us where the file is then we use that file
and we're done.
4. We didn't find the file. Carry on without it.
Only step (3) is new in this logic, everything else was already done.
There are no tests added here as we can't currently write an extension
language callback. The next commit will add the tests.

There are 3 places where we currently call debuginfod_exec_query to
lookup an objfile for a given build-id.
In one of these places we first call build_id_to_exec_bfd which also
looks up an objfile given a build-id, but this function looks on disk
for a symlink in the .build-id/ sub-directory (within the
debug-file-directory).
I can't think of any reason why we shouldn't call build_id_to_exec_bfd
before every call to debuginfod_exec_query.
So, in this commit I have added a new function in build-id.c,
find_objfile_by_build_id, this function calls build_id_to_exec_bfd,
and if that fails, then calls debuginfod_exec_query.
Everywhere we call debuginfod_exec_query is updated to call the new
function, and in locate_exec_from_corefile_build_id, the existing call
to build_id_to_exec_bfd is removed as calling find_objfile_by_build_id
does this for us.
One slight weird thing is in core_target::build_file_mappings, here we
call find_objfile_by_build_id which returns a gdb_bfd_ref_ptr for the
opened file, however we immediately reopen the file as "binary". The
reason for this is that all the bfds opened in ::build_file_mappings
need to be opened as "binary" (see the function comments for why).
I did consider passing a target type into find_objfile_by_build_id,
which could then be forwarded to build_id_to_exec_bfd and used to open
the BFD as "binary", however, if you follow the call chain you'll end
up in build_id_to_debug_bfd_1, where we actually open the bfd. Notice
in here that we call build_id_verify to double check the build-id of
the file we found, this requires that the bfd not be opened as
"binary".
What this means is that we always have to first open the bfd using the
gnutarget target type (for the build-id check), and then we would have
to reopen it as "binary". There seems little point pushing the reopen
logic into find_objfile_by_build_id, so we just do this in the
::build_file_mappings function.
I've extended the tests to cover the two cases which actually changed
in this commit.

Within the debug-file-directory GDB looks for the existence of a
.build-id directory.
Within the .build-id directory GDB looks for files with the form:
.build-id/ff/4b4142d62b399499844924d53e33d4028380db.debug
which contain the debug information for the objfile with the build-id
ff4b4142d62b399499844924d53e33d4028380db.
There appear to be two strategies for populating the .build-id
directory. Ubuntu takes the approach of placing the actual debug
information in this directory, so
4b4142d62b399499844924d53e33d4028380db.debug is an actual file
containing the debug information.
Fedora, RHEL, and SUSE take a slightly different approach, placing the
debug information elsewhere, and then creating symlinks in the
.build-id directory back to the original debug information file. The
actual debug information is arranged in a mirror of the filesystem
within the debug directory, as an example, if the debug-file-directory
is /usr/lib/debug, then the debug information for /bin/foo can be
found in /usr/lib/debug/bin/foo.debug.
Where this gets interesting is that in some cases a package will
install a single binary with multiple names, in this case a single
binary will be install with either hard-links, or symlinks providing
the alternative names.
The debug information for these multiple binaries will then be placed
into the /usr/lib/debug/ tree, and again, links are created so a
single file can provide debug information for each of the names that
binary presents as. An example file system might look like this (the
[link] could be symlinks, but are more likely hard-links):
/bin/
foo
bar -> foo [ HARD LINK ]
baz -> foo [ HARD LINK ]
/usr/
lib/
debug/
bin/
foo.debug
bar.debug -> foo.debug [ HARD LINK ]
baz.debug -> foo.debug [ HARD LINK ]
In the .build-id tree though we have a problem. Do we have a single
entry that links to one of the .debug files? This would work; a user
debugging any of the binaries will find the debug information based on
the build-id, and will get the correct information, after all the
.debug files are identical (same file linked together). But there is
one problem with this approach.
Sometimes, for *reasons* it's possible that one or more the linked
binaries might get removed, along with its associated debug
information. I'm honestly not 100% certain under what circumstances
this can happen, but what I observe is that sometime a single name for
a binary, and its corresponding .debug entry, can be missing. If this
happens to be the entry that the .build-id link is pointing at, then
we have a problem. The user can no longer find the debug information
based on the .build-id link.
The solution that Fedora, RHEL, & SUSE have adopted is to add multiple
entries in the .build-id tree, with each entry pointing to a different
name within the debug/ tree, a sequence number is added to the
build-id to distinguish the multiple entries. Thus, we might end up
with a layout like this:
/bin/
foo
bar -> foo [ HARD LINK ]
baz -> foo [ HARD LINK ]
/usr/
lib/
debug/
bin/
foo.debug
bar.debug -> foo.debug [ HARD LINK ]
baz.debug -> foo.debug [ HARD LINK ]
.build-id/
a3/
4b4142d62b399499844924d53e33d4028380db.debug -> ../../debug/bin/foo.debug [ SYMLINK ]
4b4142d62b399499844924d53e33d4028380db.1.debug -> ../../debug/bin/bar.debug [ SYMLINK ]
4b4142d62b399499844924d53e33d4028380db.2.debug -> ../../debug/bin/baz.debug [ SYMLINK ]
With current master GDB, debug information will only ever be looked up
via the 4b4142d62b399499844924d53e33d4028380db.debug link. But if
'foo' and its corresponding 'foo.debug' are ever removed, then master
GDB will fail to find the debug information.
Ubuntu seems to have a much better approach for debug information
handling; they place the debug information directly into the .build-id
tree, so there only ever needs to be a single entry for any one
build-id. I wonder if/how they handle the case where multiple names
might share a single .debug file, if one of those names is then
uninstalled, how do they know the .debug file should be retained or
not ... but I assume that problem either doesn't exist or has been
solved.
Anyway, for a while Fedora has carried a patch that handles the
build-id sequence number logic. What's presented here is inspired by
the Fedora patch, but has some changes to fix some issues.
I'm aware that this is a patch that applies to only some (probably a
minority) of distros. However, the logic is contained to only a
single function in build-id.c, and isn't too complex, so I'm hoping
that there wont be too many objections.
For distros that don't have build-id sequence numbers there should be
no impact. The sequence number approach still leaves the first file
without a sequence number, and this is the first file that GDB (after
this patch) checks for. The new logic only kicks in if the
non-sequence numbered first file exists, but is a symlink to a non
existent file; in this case GDB checks for the sequence numbered files
instead.
Tests are included.
There is a small fix needed for gdb.base/sysroot-debug-lookup.exp,
after this commit GDB now treats a target: sysroot where the target
file system is local to GDB the same as if the sysroot had no target:
prefix. The consequence of this is that GDB now resolves a symlink
back to the real filename in the sysroot-debug-lookup.exp test where
it didn't previously. As this behaviour is inline with the case where
there is no target: prefix I think this is fine.

In build_id_to_bfd_suffix we look in each debug-file-directory for a
file matching the required build-id.
If we don't find one then we add the sysroot and perform the search
again.
However, the default sysroot is 'target:', and for a native target
this just means to search on the local machine. So by default, if the
debug information is not present, then we end up searching each
location twice.
I think we only need to perform the "with sysroot" check if either:
1. The sysroot is something other than 'target:'. If the user has
set it to '/some/directory' then we should check this sysroot. Or if
the user has set it to 'target:/some/other_directory', this is also
worth checking.
2. If the sysroot is 'target:', but the target's filesystem is not
local (i.e. the user is connected to a remote target), then we should
check using the sysroot as this will be looking on the remote
machine.
There's no tests for this as the whole point here is that I'm removing
duplicate work. No test regressions were seen though.

Add two versions of a new function build_id_equal which can be used to

better to have a specific function for the task of comparing build-ids
rather than having a length check followed by a memcmp call.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

I found some spots using "target:"; I think it's better to use the

In some spots, is_target_filename is used rather than an explicit

gdb: defer warnings when loading separate debug files
It was pointed out[1] that the warnings being deferred and then later
emitted lacked styling. The warnings lacked styling before the above
commit, but it was suggested that the filenames in these warnings
should be styled, and this commit does this.
There were a couple of previous attempts[2][3][4] to solve this
problem, but these all tried to extend the mechanism introduced in the
above commit, the deferred warnings were placed directly into a
std::vector, but now we tried to, when appropriate, style these
warnings. The review feedback that this approach looked too complex.
So instead, this revision adds a new helper class 'deferred_warnings'
which can be used to collect a set of deferred warnings, and then emit
these deferred warnings later, if needed. This helper class hides the
complexity, so at the point the deferred warning is created no extra
logic is required.
The deferred_warnings class will style the deferred warnings only if
gdb_stderr supports styling. GDB's warnings are sent to gdb_stderr,
so this should ensure we only style when expected.
There was also review feedback[5] that all of the warnings should be
bundled into a single string_file, this has not been done. I feel
pretty strongly that separate warnings should be emitted using
separate "warning" calls. If we do end up with multiple warnings in
this case they aren't really related, one will be about looking up
debug via .gnu_debuglink, while the other will be about build-id based
lookup. So I'd really rather keep the warnings separate.

Currently, when GDB loads debug information from a separate debug
file, there are a couple of warnings that could be produced if things
go wrong.
In find_separate_debug_file_by_buildid (build-id.c) GDB can give a
warning if the separate debug file doesn't include any actual debug
information, and in separate_debug_file_exists (symfile.c) we can warn
if the CRC checksum in the separate debug file doesn't match the
checksum in the original executable.
The problem here is that, when looking up debug information, GDB will
try several different approaches, lookup by build-id, lookup by
debug-link, and then a lookup from debuginfod. GDB can potentially
give a warning from an earlier attempt, and then succeed with a later
attempt. In the cases I have run into this is primarily a warning
about some out of date debug information on my machine, but then GDB
finds the correct information using debuginfod. This can be confusing
to a user, they will see warnings from GDB when really everything is
working just fine.
For example:
warning: the debug information found in "/usr/lib/debug//lib64/ld-2.32.so.debug" \
does not match "/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2" (CRC mismatch).
This diagnostic was printed on Fedora 33 even when the correct
debuginfo was downloaded.
In this patch I propose that we defer any warnings related to looking
up debug information from a separate debug file. If any of the
approaches are successful then GDB will not print any of the warnings.
As far as the user is concerned, everything "just worked". Only if
GDB completely fails to find any suitable debug information will the
warnings be printed.
The crc_mismatch test compiles two executables: crc_mismatch and
crc_mismatch-2 and then strips them of debuginfo creating separate
debug files. The test then replaces crc_mismatch-2.debug with
crc_mismatch.debug to trigger "CRC mismatch" warning. A local
debuginfod server is setup to supply the correct debug file, now when
GDB looks up the debug info no warning is given.
The build-id-no-debug-warning.exp is similar to the previous test. It
triggers the "separate debug info file has no debug info" warning by
replacing the build-id based .debug file with the stripped binary and
then loading it to GDB. It then also sets up local debuginfod server
with the correct debug file to download to make sure no warnings are
emitted.

Accessing gdb.Objfile.build_id caused GDB to crash when objfile is
dynamic, that is created by JIT reader API.
The issue was NULL-pointer dereferencing in build_id_bfd_get () because
dynamic objfiles have no underlaying BFD structure. This commit fixes
the problem by a NULL-check in build_id_bfd_get ().

This changes struct objfile to use a gdb_bfd_ref_ptr. In addition to
removing some manual memory management, this fixes a use-after-free
that was introduced by the registry rewrite series. The issue there
was that, in some cases, registry shutdown could refer to memory that
had already been freed. This help fix the bug by delaying the
destruction of the BFD reference (and thus the per-bfd object) until
after the registry has been shut down.

String-like settings (var_string, var_filename, var_optional_filename,
var_string_noescape) currently take a pointer to a `char *` storage
variable (typically global) that holds the setting's value. I'd like to
"mordernize" this by changing them to use an std::string for storage.
An obvious reason is that string operations on std::string are often
easier to write than with C strings. And they avoid having to do any
manual memory management.
Another interesting reason is that, with `char *`, nullptr and an empty
string often both have the same meaning of "no value". String settings
are initially nullptr (unless initialized otherwise). But when doing
"set foo" (where `foo` is a string setting), the setting now points to
an empty string. For example, solib_search_path is nullptr at startup,
but points to an empty string after doing "set solib-search-path". This
leads to some code that needs to check for both to check for "no value".
Or some code that converts back and forth between NULL and "" when
getting or setting the value. I find this very error-prone, because it
is very easy to forget one or the other. With std::string, we at least
know that the variable is not "NULL". There is only one way of
representing an empty string setting, that is with an empty string.
I was wondering whether the distinction between NULL and "" would be
important for some setting, but it doesn't seem so. If that ever
happens, it would be more C++-y and self-descriptive to use
optional<string> anyway.
Actually, there's one spot where this distinction mattered, it's in
init_history, for the test gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp. init_history
sets the history filename to the default ".gdb_history" if it sees that
the setting was never set - if history_filename is nullptr. If
history_filename is an empty string, it means the setting was explicitly
cleared, so it leaves it as-is. With the change to std::string, this
distinction doesn't exist anymore. This can be fixed by moving the code
that chooses a good default value for history_filename to
_initialize_top. This is ran before -ex commands are processed, so an
-ex command can then clear that value if needed (what
gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp tests).
Another small improvement, in my opinion is that we can now easily
give string parameters initial values, by simply initializing the global
variables, instead of xstrdup-ing it in the _initialize function.
In Python and Guile, when registering a string-like parameter, we
allocate (with new) an std::string that is owned by the param_smob (in
Guile) and the parmpy_object (in Python) objects.
This patch started by changing all relevant add_setshow_* commands to
take an `std::string *` instead of a `char **` and fixing everything
that failed to build. That includes of course all string setting
variable and their uses.
string_option_def now uses an std::string also, because there's a
connection between options and settings (see
add_setshow_cmds_for_options).
The add_path function in source.c is really complex and twisted, I'd
rather not try to change it to work on an std::string right now.
Instead, I added an overload that copies the std:string to a `char *`
and back. This means more copying, but this is not used in a hot path
at all, so I think it is acceptable.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
This patch uses new BFD support for detecting build-ids in core
files.
After this patch, it is possible to run gdb with only the
core file, and gdb will automatically load the executable and
debug info [example from tests]:
$ gdb -nx -q
(gdb) core-file corefile-buildid.core
[New LWP 29471]
Reading symbols from gdb.base/corefile-buildid/debugdir-exec/.build-id/36/fe5722c5a7ca3ac746a84e223c6a2a69193a24...
Core was generated by `outputs/gdb.base/coref'.
Program terminated with signal SIGABRT, Aborted.
(gdb)
This work is based on functionality available in Fedora originally
written by Jan Kratochvil.
Regression tested on buildbot.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-12-07 Keith Seitz <keiths@redhat.com>
* build-id.c (build_id_bfd_get): Permit bfd_core, too.
(build_id_to_debug_bfd): Make static, rewriting to use
build_id_to_bfd_suffix.
(build_id_to_bfd_suffix): Copy of build_id_to_debug_bfd,
adding `suffix' parameter. Append SUFFIX to file names
when searching for matching files.
(build_id_to_debug_bfd): Use build_id_to_bfd_suffix.
(build_id_to_exec_bfd): Likewise.
* build-id.h (build_id_to_debug_bfd): Clarify that function
searches for BFD of debug info file.
(build_id_to_exec_bfd): Declare.
* corelow.c: Include build-id.h.
(locate_exec_from_corefile_build_id): New function.
(core_target_open): If no executable BFD is found,
search for a core file BFD using build-id.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header
sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when
limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script).
So, I'm reverting the patch. I may try again after fixing the issues
pointed out.

This patch sorts the include files for the files [a-f]*.[chyl].
The patch was written by a script.
Tested by the buildbot.
I will follow up with patches to sort the remaining files, by sorting
a subset, testing them, and then checking them in.

When looking for a separate debug file that matches a given build-id,
GDB only looks in the host's debug dir (typically /usr/lib/debug). This
patch makes it look in the sysroot as well. This is to match the
behavior of GDB when using debuglink-based separate debug files,
introduced in :
402d2bfec42 ("Look for separate debug files in debug directories under a sysroot.")
In the following example, my sysroot is "/tmp/sysroot" and I am trying
to load symbols for
/tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so. This is
the current behavior:
(gdb) file /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so
Reading symbols from /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so...
Looking for separate debug info (build-id) for /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so
Trying /usr/lib/debug/.build-id/f3/d6594d2600e985812cd4ba2ad083ac2aceae22.debug... no, unable to compute real path
<snip>
(No debugging symbols found in /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so)
With this patch:
(gdb) file /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so
Reading symbols from /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so...
Looking for separate debug info (build-id) for /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gconv/EBCDIC-AT-DE.so
Trying /usr/lib/debug/.build-id/f3/d6594d2600e985812cd4ba2ad083ac2aceae22.debug... no, unable to compute real path
Trying /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/debug/.build-id/f3/d6594d2600e985812cd4ba2ad083ac2aceae22.debug... yes!
Reading symbols from /tmp/sysroot/usr/lib/debug/.build-id/f3/d6594d2600e985812cd4ba2ad083ac2aceae22.debug...
In the original code, there is a suspicious "abfd.release ()" in
build_id_to_debug_bfd, that I don't understand. If a file with the
right name exists but its build-id note doesn't match, we release (leak)
our reference, meaning the file will stay open? I removed it in the new
code, so that the reference is dropped if we end up not using that file.
I tested briefly by corrupting a separate debug file to trigger this
code, nothing exploded.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* build-id.c (build_id_to_debug_bfd_1): New function.
(build_id_to_debug_bfd): Look for separate debug file in
sysroot.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

"set debug separate-debug-file" shows which candidates are considered,
when trying to find separate debug info. But it's not clear if GDB used
a certain candidate, and if not, why not. This patch adds some
precision:
Before:
Looking for separate debug info (debug link) for /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
Trying /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc-2.23.so
Trying /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/.debug/libc-2.23.so
Trying /usr/lib/debug//lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc-2.23.so
After:
Looking for separate debug info (debug link) for /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
Trying /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc-2.23.so... no, same file as the objfile.
Trying /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/.debug/libc-2.23.so... no, unable to open.
Trying /usr/lib/debug//lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc-2.23.so... yes!
gdb/ChangeLog:
* build-id.c (build_id_to_debug_bfd): Enhance debug output.
* symfile.c (separate_debug_file_exists): Likewise.
|
|
Using std::string here makes the string building simpler thank playing
with char*. A stack allocation is replaced with heap allocation, but
I don't think this is really performance-critical code.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* build-id.c (build_id_to_debug_bfd): Use std::string.
|
|
This patch makes the find_separate_debug_file* functions return
std::string, which allows to get rid of some manual memory management
and one cleanup.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* build-id.c (find_separate_debug_file_by_buildid): Return
std::string.
* build-id.h (find_separate_debug_file_by_buildid): Return
std::string.
* coffread.c (coff_symfile_read): Adjust to std::string.
* elfread.c (elf_symfile_read): Adjust to std::string.
* symfile.c (separate_debug_file_exists): Change parameter to
std::string.
(find_separate_debug_file): Return std::string.
(find_separate_debug_file_by_debuglink): Return std::string.
* symfile.h (find_separate_debug_file_by_debuglink): Return
std::string.

This patch makes delim_string_to_char_ptr_vec and all related functions
use std::vector of gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr. This allows getting rid of
make_cleanup_free_char_ptr_vec. Returning a vector of
unique_xmalloc_ptr instead of std::string allows to minimize the impacts
on the calling code. We can evaluate later whether we could/should
return a vector of std::strings instead.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* common/gdb_vecs.h (make_cleanup_free_char_ptr_vec): Remove.
(delim_string_to_char_ptr_vec): Return std::vector of
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr.
(dirnames_to_char_ptr_vec_append): Take std::vector of
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr.
(dirnames_to_char_ptr_vec): Return std::vector of
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr.
* common/gdb_vecs.c (delim_string_to_char_ptr_vec_append):
Take std::vector of gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr, adjust the code.
(delim_string_to_char_ptr_vec): Return an std::vector of
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr, adjust the code.
(dirnames_to_char_ptr_vec_append): Take an std::vector of
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr, adjust the code.
(dirnames_to_char_ptr_vec): Return an std::vector of
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr, adjust the code.
* auto-load.c (auto_load_safe_path_vec): Change type to
std::vector of gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr.
(auto_load_expand_dir_vars): Return an std::vector of
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr, adjust the code.

(openp): Adjust.
* symfile.c (find_separate_debug_file): Adjust.
* utils.c (do_free_char_ptr_vec): Remove.
(make_cleanup_free_char_ptr_vec): Remove.
gdb/gdbserver/ChangeLog:
* server.c (parse_debug_format_options): Adjust to
delim_string_to_char_ptr_vec changes.
* thread-db.c (thread_db_load_search): Adjust to
dirnames_to_char_ptr_vec changes.
|
|
This changes build_id_to_debug_bfd to use a unique_xmalloc_ptr,
removing a cleanup.
2018-02-08 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* build-id.c (build_id_to_debug_bfd): Use unique_xmalloc_ptr.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files
|
|
I helped someone figure out why their separate debug info (debug
link-based) was not found by gdb. It turns out that the debug file was
not named properly. It made me realize that it is quite difficult to
diagnose this kind of problems. This patch adds some debug output to
show where GDB looks for those files, so that it should be (more)
obvious to find what's wrong.
Here's an example of the result, first with an example of unsuccessful lookup,
and then a successful one.
(gdb) set debug separate-debug-file on
(gdb) file /usr/bin/gnome-calculator
Reading symbols from /usr/bin/gnome-calculator...
Looking for separate debug info (build-id) for /usr/bin/gnome-calculator
Trying /usr/local/lib/debug/.build-id/0d/5c5e8c86dbe4f4f95f7a13de04f91d377f3c6a.debug
Looking for separate debug info (debug link) for /usr/bin/gnome-calculator
Trying /usr/bin/5c5e8c86dbe4f4f95f7a13de04f91d377f3c6a.debug
Trying /usr/bin/.debug/5c5e8c86dbe4f4f95f7a13de04f91d377f3c6a.debug
Trying /usr/local/lib/debug//usr/bin/5c5e8c86dbe4f4f95f7a13de04f91d377f3c6a.debug
(no debugging symbols found)...done.
(gdb) set debug-file-directory /usr/lib/debug
(gdb) file /usr/bin/gnome-calculator
Reading symbols from /usr/bin/gnome-calculator...
Looking for separate debug info by build-id for /usr/bin/gnome-calculator
Trying /usr/lib/debug/.build-id/0d/5c5e8c86dbe4f4f95f7a13de04f91d377f3c6a.debug
Reading symbols from /usr/lib/debug/.build-id/0d/5c5e8c86dbe4f4f95f7a13de04f91d377f3c6a.debug...done.
done.
Note: here, the debug link happens to be named like the build-id, but it
doesn't have to be this way. It puzzled me for a minute.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* NEWS (Changes since GDB 8.0): Announce {set,show} debug
separate-debug-file commands.
* symfile.h (separate_debug_file_debug): New global.
* symfile.c (separate_debug_file_debug): New global.

command.
* build-id.c (build_id_to_debug_bfd,
find_separate_debug_file_by_buildid): Add debug output.

This introduces a new specialization of gdb::ref_ptr that can be used
to manage BFD reference counts. Then it changes most places in gdb to
use this new class, rather than explicit reference-counting or
cleanups. This patch removes make_cleanup_bfd_unref.
If you look you will see a couple of spots using "release" where a use
of gdb_bfd_ref_ptr would be cleaner. These will be fixed in the next
patch.
I think this patch fixes some latent bugs. For example, it seems to
me that previously objfpy_add_separate_debug_file leaked a BFD.
I'm not 100% certain that the macho_symfile_read_all_oso change is
correct. The existing code here is hard for me to follow. One goal
of this sort of automated reference counting, though, is to make it
more difficult to make logic errors; so hopefully the code is clear
now.

Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).
The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.
Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.
Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

This occurs because commit 1be5090b in bfd, addressing PR 11983, started
taking a copy of the input filename instead of directly caching it. It
appears that this code was never updated to reflect that API change.
This simple patch creates a cleanup to free the return value for lrealpath.
gdb/ChangeLog
* build-id.c (build_id_to_debug_bfd): Add cleanup to free
return value from lrealpath.

This promotes BFD's struct elf_build_id to the generic struct bfd_build_id,
populated when an ELF or PE BFD is read.
gdb is updated to use that, and to use the build-id to find symbols for PE files
also.
There is currently no generic way to extract the build-id from an object file,
perhaps an option to objdump to do this might make sense?
On x86_64-pc-cygwin, gdb's sepdebug.exp changes:
-# of unsupported tests 1
+# of expected passes 90
I don't seem to get consistent testsuite runs on i686-linux-gnu, but there
don't appear to be any regressions.
