2019-09-05PR24955, libbfd terminating program on out of memoryAlan Modra1-1/+3
This patch fixes the worst of the cases where libbfd might terminate a program due to calling xstrdup or xmalloc. I've also fixed some error paths that didn't clean up properly. PR 24955 * libbfd-in.h (bfd_strdup): New inline function. * archive.c (_bfd_get_elt_at_filepos): Use bfd_strdup. 2019-05-04PR24511, nm should not mark symbols in .init_array as "t"Alan Modra1-5/+5
This patch restricts the section names matched in coff_section_type, a function that translates section names to symbol type, and arranges to translate section flags to symbol type before looking at names. The latter change resulted in various test failures due to improper section flags being used in tests, and by the plugin support, so fix that too. The new test fails on many ELF targets that lack .init/fini_array in their scripts. I've just xfailed those. pru-elf oddly defines __init_array_begin rather than __init_array_start. I've left that target as a FAIL, and pj-elf too which reports an error for undefined weak symbols. bfd/ PR 24511 * syms.c (coff_section_type): Only allow '.', '$' and numeric following the standard section names. (bfd_decode_symclass): Prioritize section flag tests in decode_section_type before name tests in coff_section_type. * plugin.c (bfd_plugin_canonicalize_symtab): Init fake_section and fake_common_section using BFD_FAKE_SECTION. 2018-06-05PR23254, ld.bfd mishandles file pointers while scanning archiveAlan Modra1-6/+14
Best practice is to not mix lseek/read with fseek/fread on the same underlying file descriptor, as not all stdio implementations will cope. Since the plugin uses lseek/read while bfd uses fseek/fread this patch reopens the file for exclusive use by the plugin rather than trying to restore the file descriptor. That allows the plugin to read the file after plugin_call_claim_file too. bfd/ PR 23254 * plugin.c (bfd_plugin_open_input): Allow for possibility of nested archives. Open file again for plugin. 2018-02-16Remove bfd stub function casts.Alan Modra1-7/+7
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol. * libbfd.c (_bfd_bool_bfd_false_error): Rename from bfd_false. 2018-02-14Fix compilation of the BFD sub-directory with a gcc v8 compiler by adding ↵Nick Clifton1-1/+1
extra casts. GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list). For more details see: https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2018-02/msg00198.html PR 22823 Revert previous delta. 2017-06-16Rewrite __start and __stop symbol handlingAlan Modra1-0/+1
This arranges for __start and __stop symbols to be defined before garbage collection, for all target formats. That should allow the COFF and PE --gc-sections to keep a singleton orphan input section, a feature lost by 2017-06-13 commit cbd0eecf26. The fancier ELF treatment of keeping all input sections associated with a __start or __stop symbol, from 2015-10-23 commit 1cce69b9dc, is retained. .startof. and .sizeof. symbols are deliberately not defined before garbage collection, so these won't affect garbage collection of sections. The patch also ensures __start, __stop, .startof. and .sizeof. symbols are defined before target size_dynamic_sections is called, albeit with a preliminary value, so that target code doesn't need to cope with a symbol changing from undefined at size_dynamic_sections to defined at relocate_section. Also, a number of problems with the testcases have been fixed. 2016-05-25Enable 64-bit archives in ar and ranlibH.J. Lu1-0/+4
Since existing ld and gold support the 64-bit (MIPS) ELF archives, we can use the 64-bit (MIPS) ELF archives as 64-bit archives. Since the plugin target is used to create archive in plugin-enabled ar, we need a way to enable 64-bit archives in the plugin target. 2016-02-16Fix BFD format matching for x86_64-w64-mingw32 -m32 LTO.Joseph Myers1-1/+1
In <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2015-12/msg00190.html> (commit 4a07dc81356ed8728e204e9aabeb256703c59aef), Kwok fixed a problem with the template used for a dummy BFD for an IR file for LTO on MinGW, where the input and output formats are not the same. A problem, however, remains in the case of linking for x86_64-w64-mingw32 -m32, where LTO linking reports an ambiguity between the pe-i386 and pei-i386 formats. An object (pe-i386) with plugin data is being tested by the linker to see what formats match. The default format initially set by the linker when bfd_check_format_matches is called is pei-i386 (as that's the output format from the linker script), which does not match, so the function goes on to the loop over possible BFD vectors. The pe-i386 vector matches, as it should. One other vector matches: the plugin vector. bfd_check_format_matches tests a vector for matching by temporarily modifying the BFD object to use that vector then using _bfd_check_format on it. So the BFD object is temporarily using plugin_vec. _bfd_check_format ends up using bfd_plugin_object_p which uses plugin_object_p from ld which uses plugin_get_ir_dummy_bfd which succeeds, having created a BFD based on link_info.output_bfd (because srctemplate is the BFD temporarily using plugin_vec, even after Kwok's patch link_info.output_bfd is all that's available to base the dummy BFD on). So we end up with a match from the plugin vector which uses the pei-i386 vector even though the pei-i386 vector itself does not match the input object. (In the i686-mingw32 case, as opposed to this multilib case, pe-i386 is the default BFD target, which would short-circuit that logic.) There are two cases of the linker handling inputs with a plugin: they may be inputs that are also accepted by some non-plugin BFD format, as here, or they may be a format that would not be recognized at all, as with some tests in the ld testsuite. In the former case, there is no need for BFD to accept the objects using the plugin vector, as the linker has its own logic to allow plugins to claim objects accepted by some other BFD vector. Thus, this patch arranges for the plugin vector to have the lowest match priority, and for the priority from that vector to be used in the relevant case (the attempted match to the plugin vector results in TEMP pointing to the pei-i386 vector). Tested for GCC and Binutils testsuites for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, as well as verifying that it fixes the observed LTO issue for x86_64-w64-mingw32. * plugin.c (plugin_vec): Set match priority to 255. * format.c (bfd_check_format_matches) [BFD_SUPPORTS_PLUGINS]: When matching against the plugin vector, take priority from there not from TEMP.

2014-06-13Don't call bfd_link_hash_table_freeAlan Modra1-1/+0
Freeing the linker hash table is a royal pain. It can't be freed before the _bfd_write_contents call in bfd_close, because some target bfd_write_contents functions access the hash table. It can't be freed after bfd_close either, since bfd_alloc memory holding side data structures disappears (PR17047). Clearly the only place it can be freed is actually in bfd_close.
