2021-09-02PTR_ADD and NPTR_ADD for bfd.hAlan Modra1-0/+5
This defines a couple of macros used to avoid ubsan complaints about calculations involving NULL pointers. PTR_ADD should be used in the case where it is known that the offset is always zero with a NULL pointer, and you'd like to know if a non-zero offset is ever used. NPTR_ADD should be rarely used, but is defined for cases where a non-zero offset is expected and should be ignored if the pointer is NULL. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (PTR_ADD, NPTR_ADD): Define. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * elf-eh-frame.c (adjust_eh_frame_local_symbols): Avoid NULL pointer calculations. * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_strip_zero_sized_dynamic_sections): Likewise. 2021-07-28Externalize the _bfd_set_gp_value functionwill schmidt1-0/+2
This change adds an external-visible wrapper for the _bfd_set_gp_value function. This is a prerequisite for some gdb patches that better handle powerpc64le relocations against ".TOC.". * bfd.c (bfd_set_gp_value): New externally visible wrapper for _bfd_set_gp_value. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate.
2021-07-08ld: Limit cache size and add --max-cache-size=SIZEH.J. Lu1-0/+3
When link_info.keep_memory is true, linker caches the relocation information and symbol tables of input files in memory. 2021-07-05ld: Cache and reuse the IR archive file descriptorH.J. Lu1-0/+6
Linker plugin_object_p opens the IR archive for each IR archive member. For GCC plugin, plugin_object_p closes the archive file descriptor. But for LLVM plugin, the archive file descriptor remains open. If there are 3000 IR archive members, there are 3000 file descriptors for them. We can run out of file descriptors petty easily. 1. Add archive_plugin_fd and archive_plugin_fd_open_count to bfd so that we can cache and reuse the IR archive file descriptor for all IR archive members in the archive. 2. Add bfd_plugin_close_file_descriptor to properly close the IR archive file descriptor. bfd/ PR ld/28040 * archive.c (_bfd_archive_close_and_cleanup): Close the archive plugin file descriptor if needed. * bfd.c (bfd): Add archive_plugin_fd and archive_plugin_fd_open_count. * opncls.c (_bfd_new_bfd): Initialize to -1. * plugin.c (bfd_plugin_open_input): Cache and reuse the archive plugin file descriptor. 2021-05-06or1k: Implement relocation R_OR1K_GOT_AHI16 for gotha()Stafford Horne1-0/+1
The gotha() relocation mnemonic will be outputted by OpenRISC GCC when using the -mcmodel=large option. This relocation is used along with got() to generate 32-bit GOT offsets. This increases the previous GOT offset limit from the previous 16-bit (64K) limit. 2021-04-05C99 bfd configuryAlan Modra1-17/+1
Certain library headers and functions are required by C99. This removes configure tests for them. The patch also removes AC_ISC_POSIX and AC_HEADER_DIRENT, which the autoconf manual states are obsolescent. sys/time.h is no longer tangled up with time.h so it can be handled by the gprof configure. * configure.ac: Don't check for long long or long double type. Don't check for alloca.h, limits.h, stddef.h, stdlib.h, string.h, strings.h, time.h, wchar.h, wctype.h or sys/time.h. Don't check for strtoull, free, malloc, realloc, getenv, strstr, snprintf, vsnprintf, strlen or setitimer. Sort AC_CHECK_DECLS. (AC_ISC_POSIX): Don't invoke. (AC_HEADER_TIME, AC_HEADER_DIRENT, ACX_HEADER_STRING): Likewise. * sysdep.h: Remove many HAVE_*_H checks and fallback declarations. Do test HAVE_SYS_TYPES_H. Don't include sys/time.h. Reorder header order as per automake AC_INCLUDES_DEFAULT. * bfd-in.h: Include inttypes.h unconditionally. * bfd.c (_bfd_doprnt, _bfd_doprnt_scan): Assume long long and long double are available. 2021-03-12aix: implement TLS relocation for gas and ldClément Chigot1-0/+10
Add support for TLS in XCOFF. Amongst the things done by this commit: - Update XCOFF auxialiary header to match new version and allow TLS sections. - Add TLS sections (.tdata and .tbss) support in gas and ld. - Add support for the TLS relocations in gas and ld. Two different types BFD_RELOC are created for PPC and PPC64 as the size is a pointer, thus distinct in 32 or 64bit. The addresses given by ld to .tdata and .tbss is a bit special. In XCOFF, these addresses are actually offsets from the TLS pointer computed at runtime. AIX assembly and linker does the same. In top of that, the .tdata must be before .data (this is mandatory for AIX loader). Thus, the aix ld script is recomputing "." before .data to restore its original value. There might be a simpler way, but this one is working. Optimisation linked to TLS relocations aren't yet implemented. bfd/ * reloc.c (BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_LE, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_IE, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_M, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_ML, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_GD, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_LD, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_LE, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_IE, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_M, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_ML): New relocations. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * libbfd.h: Regenerate. * coff-rs6000.c (xcoff_calculate_relocation): Call xcoff_reloc_type_tls for TLS relocations. 2021-03-12aix: implement R_TOCU and R_TOCL relocationsClément Chigot1-0/+2
Implement support for largetoc on XCOFF. R_TOCU and R_TOCL are referenced by the new BFD defines: BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_HI and BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_LO. A new toc storage class is added XMC_TE. In order to correctly handle R_TOCU, the logic behind xcoff_reloc_type_toc is changed to compute the whole TOC offset instead of just the difference between the "link" offset and the "assembly" offset. In gas, add a function to transform addis format used by AIX "addis RT, D(RA)" into the ELF format "addis RT, RA, SI". bfd/ * reloc.c (BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_HI, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_LO): New relocations. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * libbfd.h: Regenerate. * coff-rs6000.c (xcoff_calculate_relocation): Call xcoff_reloc_type_toc for R_TOCU and R_TOCL. 2021-01-13SHF_LINK_ORDER fixup_link_order in ldAlan Modra1-5/+2
This moves the SHF_LINK_ORDER sorting from bfd_elf_final_link to the linker which means generic ELF targets now support SHF_LINK_ORDER and we cope with odd cases that require resizing of output sections. The patch also fixes two bugs in the current implementation, introduced by commit cd6d537c48fa. The pattern test used by that commit meant that sections matching something like "*(.IA_64.unwind* .gnu.linkonce.ia64unw.*)" would not properly sort a mix of sections matching the two wildcards. That commit also assumed a stable qsort. bfd/ PR 27160 * section.c (struct bfd_section): Remove pattern field. 2021-01-07ELF: Don't generate unused section symbolsH.J. Lu1-0/+17
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations. With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB. Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is always included in the symbol table. Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed. Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to: 1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE. 2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend. 3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker outputs. bfd/ PR 27109 * aix386-core.c (core_aix386_vec): Initialize keep_unused_section_symbol to TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS. * aout-target.h (MY (vec)): Likewise. * binary.c (binary_vec): Likewise. * cisco-core.c (core_cisco_be_vec): Likewise. 2020-09-08MSP430: Support relocations for subtract expressions in .uleb128 directivesJozef Lawrynowicz1-0/+2
Link-time relaxations of branches are common for MSP430, given that GCC can generate pessimal branch instructions, and the -mcode-region=either/-mdata-region=either options to shuffle sections can further change the type of branch instruction required. These relaxations can result in invalid code when .uleb128 directives, used in the .gcc_except_table section, are used to calculate the distance between two labels. A value for the .uleb128 directive is calculated at assembly-time, and can't be updated at link-time, even if relaxation causes the distance between the labels to change. This patch adds relocations for subtract expressions in .uleb128 directives, to allow the linker to re-calculate the value of these expressions after relaxation has been performed. bfd/ChangeLog: * bfd-in2.h (bfd_reloc_code_real): Add BFD_RELOC_MSP430_{SET,SUB}_ULEB128. * elf32-msp430.c (msp430_elf_ignore_reloc): New. 2020-09-08aarch64: Add base support for Armv8-RAlex Coplan1-0/+1
This patch adds the basic infrastructure needed to support Armv8-R in AArch64 binutils: new command-line flags, new feature bits, a new BFD architecture, and support for differentiating between architecture variants in the disassembler. The new command-line options added by this patch are -march=armv8-r in GAS and -m aarch64:armv8-r in objdump. The disassembler support is necessary since Armv8-R AArch64 introduces a system register (VSCTLR_EL2) which shares an encoding with a different system register (TTBR0_EL2) in Armv8-A. This also allows us to use the correct preferred disassembly for the new DFB alias introduced in Armv8-R. bfd/ChangeLog: 2020-09-08 Alex Coplan <alex.coplan@arm.com> * archures.c (bfd_mach_aarch64_8R): New. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * cpu-aarch64.c (bfd_aarch64_arch_v8_r): New. 2020-05-20PR25993, read of freed memoryAlan Modra1-1/+1
ldmain.c:add_archive_element copies file name pointers from the bfd to a lang_input_statement_type. input->filename = abfd->filename; input->local_sym_name = abfd->filename; This results in stale pointers when twiddling the bfd filename in places like the pe ld after_open. 2020-04-02coff-go32-exe: support variable-length stubsJan W. Jagersma1-3/+2
The stub size in GO32 executables has historically been fixed at 2048 bytes, due to hardcoded limitations in bfd. Recent patches to djgpp by Stas Sergeev (CC'd) have pushed the stub right up to this limit, so if any further expansion is desired, this must first be patched in bfd. This series includes three patches: The first changes the meaning of the bfd->origin field slightly, so that target code can use this to specify an offset into the file where the actual bfd is located. The second patch then uses this to enable support for variable-sized stubs in the coff-go32-exe format. The final patch is only a cleanup, it normalizes function and variable names in coff-stgo32.c so that they all begin with the same prefix. bfd * bfdio.c (bfd_bread, bfd_tell, bfd_seek, bfd_mmap): Always add bfd->origin to file offset. * bfdwin.c (bfd_get_file_window): Likewise. * bfd.c: Clarify the use of the bfd->origin field. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * coff-i386.c: Don't include go32exe.h. 2020-03-02bfd_cleanup for object_pAlan Modra1-3/+5
The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the target that allocated the memory. It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed. In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. 2020-02-27bfd_stat_arch_elt buffer overflowAlan Modra1-1/+2
If you manage to put an xcoff object file into a non-xcoff archive (created by first putting a non-xcoff object file into it), and have xcoff support compiled into libbfd, then objdump -x on the archive can segfault. The problem is that _bfd_xcoff_stat_arch_elt expects abfd->arelt_data->arch_header to be one of the xcoff variants, but arelt_data is generated depending on the archive format, *not* the element format. * bfd.c (bfd_stat_arch_elt): Use vector of containing archive, if file is an archive element. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate.

2020-02-06ELF: Support the section flag 'o' in .section directiveH.J. Lu1-1/+3
As shown in https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=25490 --gc-sections will silently remove __patchable_function_entries section and generate corrupt result. This patch adds the section flag 'o' to .section directive: .section __patchable_function_entries,"awo",@progbits,foo .section __patchable_function_entries,"awoG",@progbits,foo,foo,comdat .section __patchable_function_entries,"awo",@progbits,bar,unique,4 .section __patchable_function_entries,"awoG",@progbits,foo,foo,comdat,unique,1 which specifies the symbol name which the section references. Assmebler will set its elf_linked_to_section to a local section where the symbol is defined. 2020-02-02ELF: Add support for unique section ID to assemblerH.J. Lu1-2/+10
Clang's integrated assembler supports multiple section with the same name: .section .text,"ax",@progbits,unique,1 nop .section .text,"ax",@progbits,unique,2 nop "unique,N" assigns the number, N, as the section ID, to a section. The valid values of the section ID are between 0 and 4294967295. It can be used to distinguish different sections with the same section name. This is useful with -fno-unique-section-names -ffunction-sections. -ffunction-sections by default generates .text.foo, .text.bar, etc. Using the same string can save lots of space in .strtab. This patch adds section_id to bfd_section and reuses the linker internal bit in BFD section flags, SEC_LINKER_CREATED, for assmebler internal use to mark valid section_id. It also updates objdump to compare section pointers if 2 sections comes from the same file since 2 different sections can have the same section name. bfd/ PR gas/25380 * bfd-in2.h: Regenerated. * ecoff.c (bfd_debug_section): Add section_id. * section.c (bfd_section): Add section_id. This is one way of fixing ubsan bug reports, just delete the code. The assembler support was removed back in 2005 along with other non-BFD assemblers, but somehow the remainder of the port stayed in. bfd/ * coff-tic80.c: Delete file. * cpu-tic80.c: Delete file. * archures.c: Remove tic80 support. * coffcode.h: Likewise. * coffswap.h: Likewise. * targets.c: Likewise. * config.bfd: Likewise. * configure.ac: Likewise. * Makefile.am: Likewise. * Makefile.in: Regenerate. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * configure: Regenerate. * po/SRC-POTFILES.in: Regenerate. binutils/ * testsuite/binutils-all/objcopy.exp: Remove tic80 support. * testsuite/binutils-all/objdump.exp: Likewise. gas/ * doc/as.texi: Remove mention of tic80. include/ * coff/tic80.h: Delete file. * opcode/tic80.h: Delete file. ld/ * emulparams/tic80coff.sh: Delete file. * scripttempl/tic80coff.sc: Delete file. * configure.tgt: Remove tic80 support. * Makefile.am: Likewise. * Makefile.in: Regenerate. * po/BLD-POTFILES.in: Regenerate. opcodes/ * tic80-dis.c: Delete file. * tic80-opc.c: Delete file. * disassemble.c: Remove tic80 support. * disassemble.h: Likewise. * Makefile.am: Likewise. * configure.ac: Likewise. * Makefile.in: Regenerate. * configure: Regenerate. * po/POTFILES.in: Regenerate.
