Link-time relaxations of branches are common for MSP430, given that GCC
can generate pessimal branch instructions, and the
-mcode-region=either/-mdata-region=either options to shuffle sections
can further change the type of branch instruction required.
These relaxations can result in invalid code when .uleb128
directives, used in the .gcc_except_table section, are used to calculate
the distance between two labels. A value for the .uleb128 directive is
calculated at assembly-time, and can't be updated at link-time, even if
relaxation causes the distance between the labels to change.
This patch adds relocations for subtract expressions in .uleb128
directives, to allow the linker to re-calculate the value of these
expressions after relaxation has been performed.

This patch adds the basic infrastructure needed to support Armv8-R in
AArch64 binutils: new command-line flags, new feature bits, a new BFD
architecture, and support for differentiating between architecture
variants in the disassembler.
The new command-line options added by this patch are -march=armv8-r in
GAS and -m aarch64:armv8-r in objdump.
The disassembler support is necessary since Armv8-R AArch64 introduces a
system register (VSCTLR_EL2) which shares an encoding with a different
system register (TTBR0_EL2) in Armv8-A. This also allows us to use the
correct preferred disassembly for the new DFB alias introduced in
Armv8-R.

ldmain.c:add_archive_element copies file name pointers from the bfd to
a lang_input_statement_type.
input->filename = abfd->filename;

This results in stale pointers when twiddling the bfd filename in

The stub size in GO32 executables has historically been fixed at 2048
bytes, due to hardcoded limitations in bfd. Recent patches to djgpp by
Stas Sergeev (CC'd) have pushed the stub right up to this limit, so if
any further expansion is desired, this must first be patched in bfd.
This series includes three patches: The first changes the meaning of
the bfd->origin field slightly, so that target code can use this to
specify an offset into the file where the actual bfd is located.
The second patch then uses this to enable support for variable-sized
stubs in the coff-go32-exe format.
The final patch is only a cleanup, it normalizes function and variable
names in coff-stgo32.c so that they all begin with the same prefix.

The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed
to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on
their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's
also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the
object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used
and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the
target that allocated the memory.
It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed.
In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with
ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup
function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to
tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. The only cleanup
that does anything at this stage is the alpha-vms one.

If you manage to put an xcoff object file into a non-xcoff archive

As shown in
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=25490
--gc-sections will silently remove __patchable_function_entries section
and generate corrupt result. This patch adds the section flag 'o' to
.section directive:
.section __patchable_function_entries,"awo",@progbits,foo
.section __patchable_function_entries,"awoG",@progbits,foo,foo,comdat
.section __patchable_function_entries,"awo",@progbits,bar,unique,4
.section __patchable_function_entries,"awoG",@progbits,foo,foo,comdat,unique,1
which specifies the symbol name which the section references. Assmebler
will set its elf_linked_to_section to a local section where the symbol
is defined.
Linker is updated to call mark_hook if gc_mark of any of its linked-to
sections is set after all sections, except for backend specific ones,
have been garbage collected.

* bfd-in2.h: Regenerated.
* section.c (SEC_ASSEMBLER_SECTION_ID): Fix a typo in comments.
|

Clang's integrated assembler supports multiple section with the same
name:
.section .text,"ax",@progbits,unique,1
nop
.section .text,"ax",@progbits,unique,2
nop
"unique,N" assigns the number, N, as the section ID, to a section. The
valid values of the section ID are between 0 and 4294967295. It can be
used to distinguish different sections with the same section name.
This is useful with -fno-unique-section-names -ffunction-sections.
-ffunction-sections by default generates .text.foo, .text.bar, etc.
Using the same string can save lots of space in .strtab.
This patch adds section_id to bfd_section and reuses the linker
internal bit in BFD section flags, SEC_LINKER_CREATED, for assmebler
internal use to mark valid section_id. It also updates objdump to
compare section pointers if 2 sections comes from the same file since
2 different sections can have the same section name.

and other tidies. I think it's better to default to passing the
section to bfd_octets_per_byte, even in cases where we know it won't
make a difference.
A number of the coff reloc functions used bfd_octets_per_byte wrongly,
not factoring it into the offset into the data buffer. As it happens,
the targets using those files always had bfd_octets_per_byte equal to
one, so there wasn't any detectable wrong behaviour. However, it is
wrong in the source and might cause trouble for anyone creating a new
target. Besides fixing that, the patch also defines OCTETS_PER_BYTE
as one in target files where that is appropriate.

This patch introduces a new "sorry, cannot handle this file" bfd error
status. The idea is to use this error in cases where bfd hasn't found
a bfd_bad_value error, ie. an input file or set of options that are
invalid, but rather an input file that is simply too difficult to
process. Typically this might happen with fuzzed object files such as
the one in the PR, a wildly improbable core file. Some things are
just not worth wasting time over to fix "properly".

I think it is past time to remove CR16C support. CR16C was added in
2004, and only for ld. gas and binutils support is lacking, and there
have been no commits to bfd/elf32-cr16c.c other than warning fixes or
global maintainers making changes to all targets. I see no maintainer
listed for CR16C, and no commits from anyone at NSC supporting the
target. Furthermore, at the time the CR16 support was added in 2007,
config.sub was changed upstream to no longer recognise cr16c as a
valid cpu. That means the CR16C ld support is only available as a
secondary target by configuring with, for example,
--enable-targets=all or --enable-targets=cr16c-unknown-elf. No
testing of the CR16C target is possible.
