2025-03-08libstdc++: constrain std::atomic's default constructorGiuseppe D'Angelo1-10/+12
This commit implements the proposed resolution to LWG4169, which is to constrain std::atomic<T>'s default constructor based on whether T itself is default constructible. At the moment, std::atomic<T>'s primary template in libstdc++ has a defaulted default constructor. Value-initialization of the T member (since C++20 / P0883R2) is done via a NSDMI (= T()). GCC already considers the defaulted constructor constrained/deleted, however this behavior is non-standard (see the discussion in PR116769): the presence of a NSDMI should not make the constructor unavailable to overload resolution/deleted ([class.default.ctor]/2.5 does not apply). When using libstdc++ on Clang, this causes build issues as the constructor is *not* deleted there -- the interpretation of [class.default.ctor]/4 seems to match Clang's behavior. Therefore, although there would be "nothing to do" with GCC+libstdc++, this commit changes the code as to stop relying on the GCC language extension. In C++ >= 20 modes, std::atomic's defaulted default constructor is changed to be a non-defaulted one, with a constraint added as per LWG4169; value-initialization of the data member is moved from the NSDMI to the member init list. The new signature matches the one in the Standard as per [atomics.types.operations]/1. In pre-C++20 modes, the constructor is left defaulted. This ensures compatibility with C++11/14/17 behavior. In other words: we are not backporting P0883R2 to earlier language modes here. Amend an existing test to check that a std::atomic wrapping a non-default constructible type is always non-default constructible: from C++20, because of the constraint; before C++20, because we are removing the NSDMI, and therefore [class.default.ctor]/2.5 applies. Add another test that checks that std::atomic is trivially default constructible in pre-C++20 modes, and it isn't afterwards. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/version.def (atomic_value_initialization): Guard the FTM with the language concepts FTM. * include/bits/version.h: Regenerate. * include/std/atomic (atomic): When atomic value init is defined, change the defaulted default constructor to a non-defaulted one, constraining it as per LWG4169. Otherwise, keep the existing constructor. Remove the NSDMI for the _M_i member. (_GLIBCXX20_INIT): Drop the macro, as it is not needed any more. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic/69301.cc: Test that an atomic wrapping a non-default-constructible type is always itself non-default-constructible (in all language modes). * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic/cons/trivial.cc: New test.

2024-09-27libstdc++: Fix test FAIL due to -Wpointer-arithJonathan Wakely1-16/+16
This fixes a FAIL due to a -Wpointer-arith warning when testing with c++11 or c++14 dialects. As an extension our std::atomic<void*> supports pointer arithmetic in C++11 and C++14, but due to the system header changes there is now a warning about it. The warning seems reasonable, so rather than suppress it we should make the test expect it. While looking into this I decided to simplify some of the code related to atomic<T*> arithmetic. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/atomic_base.h (__atomic_base<T*>::_M_type_size): Replace overloaded functions with static _S_type_size. * include/std/atomic (atomic<T*>): Use is_object_v instead of is_object. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic/operators/pointer_partial_void.cc: Add dg-warning for -Wpointer-arith warning.
2024-09-25libstdc++: #ifdef out #pragma GCC system_headerJason Merrill1-0/+2
In r15-3714-gd3a7302ec5985a I added -Wsystem-headers to the libstdc++ build flags to help catch problems in the library. This patch takes a different approach, of disabling the #pragma system_header unless _GLIBCXX_SYSHDR is defined. As a result, the testsuites will treat them as non-system-headers to get better warning coverage during regression testing of both gcc and libstdc++, not just when building the library. My rationale for the #ifdef instead of just removing the #pragma is the three G++ tests that want to test libstdc++ system header behavior, so we need a way to select it. This doesn't affect installed libraries, as they get their system-header status from the lookup path. But testsuite_flags --build-includes gives -I directives rather than -isystem. This patch doesn't change the headers in config/ because I'm not compiling with most of them, so won't see any warnings that need fixing. Adjusting them could happen later, or we can not bother. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * acinclude.m4 (WARN_FLAGS): Remove -Wsystem-headers. * configure: Regenerate. * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: #ifdef 2024-08-01libstdc++: Remove unnecessary uses of <stdint.h>Jonathan Wakely1-0/+1
We don't need to include all of <stdint.h> when we only need uintptr_t from it. By using GCC's internal macro we avoid unnecessarily declaring everything in <stdint.h>. This helps users to avoid accidentally relying on those names being declared without explicitly including the header. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/align.h (align, assume_aligned): Use __UINTPTR_TYPE__ instead of uintptr_t. 2023-11-16libstdc++: Only declare feature test macros in standard headersJonathan Wakely1-0/+3
This change moves the definitions of feature test macros (or strictly speaking, the requests for <bits/version.h> to define them) so that only standard headers define them. For example, <bits/shared_ptr.h> will no longer define macros related to std::shared_ptr, only <memory> and <version> will define them. This means that __cpp_lib_shared_ptr_arrays will not be defined by <future> or by other headers that include <bits/shared_ptr.h>. It will only be defined when <memory> has been included. This will discourage users from relying on transitive includes. As a result, internal headers that need to query the macros should use the internal macros like __glibcxx_shared_ptr_arrays instead of __cpp_lib_shared_ptr_arrays, as those internal macros are defined by the internal headers after icluding <bits/version.h>. There are some exceptions to this rule, because __cpp_lib_is_constant_evaluated is defined by bits/c++config.h and so is available everywhere, and __cpp_lib_three_way_comparison is defined by <compare> which several headers are explicitly specified to include, so its macro is guaranteed to be usable too. N.B. not many internal headers actually need an explicit include of <bits/version.h>, because most of them include <type_traits> and so get all the __glibcxx_foo internal macros from there. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: Do not define standard feature test macro here. * include/bits/align.h: Likewise. 2023-05-16libstdc++: Stop using _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_STDINT_TR1 in <cstdint>Jonathan Wakely1-1/+1
The _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_STDINT_TR1 macro (and the comments about it in acinclude.m4 and config.h) are misleading when it is also used for <stdint>, not only <tr1/stdint>. It is also wrong, because the configure checks for TR1 use -std=c++98 and a target might define uint32_t etc. for C++11 but not for C++98. Add a separate configure check for the <stdint.h> types using -std=c++11 for the checks. Use the result of that separate check in <cstdint> and most other places that still depend on the macro (many uses of that macro have been removed already). The remaining uses of the STDINT_TR1 macro are really for TR1, or are in the src/c++11/compatibility-*.cc files, where we don't want/need to change the condition they depend on (if those symbols were only exported when <stdint.h> types were available for -std=c++98, then that's the condition we should continue to use for whether to export the compat symbols now). Make similar changes for the related _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_INTTYPES_TR1 and _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_INTTYPES_WCHAR_T_TR1 macros, adding new macros for non-TR1 uses. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * acinclude.m4 (GLIBCXX_USE_C99): Check for <stdint.h> types in C++11 mode and define _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_STDINT. 2022-10-18libstdc++: Partial library support for std::float{16,32,64,128}_t and ↵Jakub Jelinek1-0/+85
std::bfloat16_t The following patch is partial support for std::float{16,32,64,128}_t and std::bfloat16_t in libstdc++. https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2022/p1467r9.html says that <ostream>, <istream>, <charconv> and <complex> need changes toom, but that isn't implemented so far. In <cmath> the only thing missing I'm aware of is std::nextafter std::float16_t and std::bfloat16_t overloads (I think we probably need to implement that out of line somewhere, or inline? - might need inline asm barriers) and std::nexttoward overloads (those are intentional, you said there is a LWG issue about that). Also, this patch has the glibc 2.26+ std::float128_t support for platforms where long double isn't IEEE quad format temporarily disabled because it depends on https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2022-October/603665.html changes which aren't in yet. The patch also doesn't include any testcases to cover the <type_traits> changes, it isn't clear to me where to put that. 2022-10-18 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR c++/106652 * include/std/stdfloat: New file. * include/std/numbers (__glibcxx_numbers): Define and use it for __float128 explicit instantiations as well as _Float{16,32,64,128} and __gnu_cxx::__bfloat16_t. * include/std/atomic (atomic<_Float16>, atomic<_Float32>, atomic<_Float64>, atomic<_Float128>, atomic<__gnu_cxx::__bfloat16_t>): New explicit instantiations. * include/std/type_traits (__is_floating_point_helper<_Float16>, __is_floating_point_helper<_Float32>, __is_floating_point_helper<_Float64>, __is_floating_point_helper<_Float128>, __is_floating_point_helper<__gnu_cxx::__bfloat16_t>): Likewise. * include/std/limits (__glibcxx_concat3_, __glibcxx_concat3, __glibcxx_float_n): Define. 2022-09-08libstdc++: Clear padding bits in atomic compare_exchangeThomas Rodgers1-31/+27
This change implements P0528 which requires that padding bits not participate in atomic compare exchange operations. All arguments to the generic template are 'sanitized' by the __builtin_clear_padding intrinsic before they are used in comparisons. This requires that any stores also sanitize the incoming value. 2022-04-22libstdc++: Make atomic notify_one and notify_all non-constThomas W Rodgers1-8/+8
<recording this here for future reference> PR102994 "atomics: std::atomic<ptr>::wait is not marked const" raises the issue that the current libstdc++ implementation marks the notify members const, the implementation strategy used by libstdc++, as well as libc++ and the Microsoft STL, do not require the atomic to be mutable (it is hard to conceive of a desirable implementation approach that would require it). The original paper proposing the wait/notify functionality for atomics (p1185) also had these members marked const for the first three revisions, but that was changed without explanation in r3 and subsequent revisions of the paper. After raising the issue to the authors of p1185 and the author of the libc++ implementation, the consensus seems to be "meh, it's harmless" so there seems little appetite for an LWG issue to revisit the subject. This patch changes the libstdc++ implementation to be in agreement with the standard by removing const from those notify_one/notify_all members. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: PR libstdc++/102994 * include/bits/atomic_base.h (atomic_flag::notify_one, notify_all): Remove const qualification. 2021-04-20libstdc++: Refactor/cleanup of C++20 atomic wait implementationThomas Rodgers1-11/+4
This is a substantial rewrite of the atomic wait/notify (and timed wait counterparts) implementation. The previous __platform_wait looped on EINTR however this behavior is not required by the standard. A new _GLIBCXX_HAVE_PLATFORM_WAIT macro now controls whether wait/notify are implemented using a platform specific primitive or with a platform agnostic mutex/condvar. This patch only supplies a definition for linux futexes. A future update could add support __ulock_wait/wake on Darwin, for instance. The members of __waiters were lifted to a new base class. The members are now arranged such that overall sizeof(__waiter_pool_base) fits in two cache lines (on platforms with at least 64 byte cache lines). The definition will also use destructive_interference_size for this if it is available. The __waiters type is now specific to untimed waits, and is renamed to __waiter_pool. Timed waits have a corresponding __timed_waiter_pool type. Much of the code has been moved from the previous __atomic_wait() free function to the __waiter_base template and a __waiter derived type is provided to implement the un-timed wait operations. A similar change has been made to the timed wait implementation. The __atomic_spin code has been extended to take a spin policy which is invoked after the initial busy wait loop. The default policy is to return from the spin. The timed wait code adds a timed backoff spinning policy. The code from <thread> which implements this_thread::sleep_for, sleep_until has been moved to a new <bits/std_thread_sleep.h> header which allows the thread sleep code to be consumed without pulling in the whole of <thread>. The entry points into the wait/notify code have been restructured to support either - * Testing the current value of the atomic stored at the given address and waiting on a notification. * Applying a predicate to determine if the wait was satisfied. The entry points were renamed to make it clear that the wait and wake operations operate on addresses. The first variant takes the expected value and a function which returns the current value that should be used in comparison operations, these operations are named with a _v suffix (e.g. 'value'). All atomic<_Tp> wait/notify operations use the first variant. Barriers, latches and semaphores use the predicate variant. This change also centralizes what it means to compare values for the purposes of atomic<T>::wait rather than scattering through individual predicates. This change also centralizes the repetitive code which adjusts for different user supplied clocks (this should be moved elsewhere and all such adjustments should use a common implementation). This change also removes the hashing of the pointer and uses the pointer value directly for indexing into the waiters table. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/Makefile.am: Add new <bits/this_thread_sleep.h> header. * include/Makefile.in: Regenerate. * include/bits/this_thread_sleep.h: New file. * include/bits/atomic_base.h: Adjust all calls to __atomic_wait/__atomic_notify for new call signatures. * include/bits/atomic_timed_wait.h: Extensive rewrite. * include/bits/atomic_wait.h: Likewise. * include/bits/semaphore_base.h: Adjust all calls to __atomic_wait/__atomic_notify for new call signatures. * include/std/atomic: Likewise. * include/std/barrier: Likewise. * include/std/latch: Likewise. * include/std/semaphore: Likewise. * include/std/thread (this_thread::sleep_for) (this_thread::sleep_until): Move to new header. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic/wait_notify/bool.cc: Simplify test. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic/wait_notify/generic.cc: Likewise. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic/wait_notify/pointers.cc: Likewise. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic_flag/wait_notify/1.cc: Likewise. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic_float/wait_notify.cc: Likewise. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic_integral/wait_notify.cc: Likewise. * testsuite/29_atomics/atomic_ref/wait_notify.cc: Likewise.

2019-07-11Define std::atomic_ref and std::atomic<floating-point> for C++20Jonathan Wakely1-1/+65
This adds the new atomic types from C++2a, as proposed by P0019 and P0020. To reduce duplication the calls to the compiler's atomic built-ins are wrapped in new functions in the __atomic_impl namespace. These functions are currently only used by std::atomic<floating-point> and std::atomic_ref but could also be used for all other specializations of std::atomic. * include/bits/atomic_base.h (__atomic_impl): New namespace for wrappers around atomic built-ins.
