2018-11-07doc: Use @: where neededSegher Boessenkool1-2/+2
When an abbreviation ends with a dot followed by whitespace, Texinfo thinks the dot ends a sentence, and applies spacing rules etc. based on that. To prevent this, there is the @: macro. This patch puts @: after every vs., e.g., and i.e. where it is needed. 2018-09-19Remove constant vec_select restriction.Andrew Stubbs1-5/+6
The vec_select operator is documented to require a const_int for the lane selector operand, but GCN has an instruction that can select the lane at runtime, so it seems reasonable to remove this restriction. This patch simply replaces assertions that the operand is constant with early exits from the optimizers. I think it's reasonable that vec_select with a non-constant operand cannot be optimized, yet. Also included is the necessary documentation tweak. 2018-09-19 Andrew Stubbs <ams@codesourcery.com> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi: Adjust vec_select description. * simplify-rtx.c (simplify_binary_operation_1): Allow VEC_SELECT to use non-constant selectors. 2018-01-10Mostly revert r254296Richard Sandiford1-12/+6
r254296 added support for (const ...) wrappers around vectors, but in the end the agreement was to use a variable-length encoding of CONST_VECTOR (and VECTOR_CST) instead. This patch therefore reverts the bits that are no longer needed. The rtl.texi part isn't a full revert, since r254296 also updated the documentation to mention unspecs in address calculations, and to relax the requirement that the mode had to be Pmode. 2018-01-10 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi: Remove documentation of (const ...) wrappers for vectors, as a partial revert of r254296. * rtl.h (const_vec_p): Delete. 2018-01-02New CONST_VECTOR layoutRichard Sandiford1-12/+86
This patch makes CONST_VECTOR use the same encoding as VECTOR_CST. One problem that occurs in RTL but not at the tree level is that a fair amount of code uses XVEC and XVECEXP directly on CONST_VECTORs (which is valid, just with looser checking). This is complicated by the fact that vectors are also represented as PARALLELs in some target interfaces, so using XVECEXP is a good polymorphic way of handling both forms. Rather than try to untangle all that, the best approach seemed to be to continue to encode every element in a fixed-length vector. That way only target-independent and AArch64 code need to be precise about using CONST_VECTOR_ELT over XVECEXP. After this change is no longer valid to modify CONST_VECTORs in-place. 2017-12-20poly_int: SUBREG_BYTERichard Sandiford1-15/+22
This patch changes SUBREG_BYTE from an int to a poly_int. Since valid SUBREG_BYTEs must be contained within the mode of the SUBREG_REG, the required range is the same as for GET_MODE_SIZE, i.e. unsigned short. The patch therefore uses poly_uint16(_pod) for the SUBREG_BYTE. Using poly_uint16_pod rtx fields requires a new field code ('p'). Since there are no other uses of 'p' besides SUBREG_BYTE, the patch doesn't add an XPOLY or whatever; all uses should go via SUBREG_BYTE instead. The patch doesn't bother implementing 'p' support for legacy define_peepholes, since none of the remaining ones have subregs in their patterns. As it happened, the rtl documentation used SUBREG as an example of a code with mixed field types, accessed via XEXP (x, 0) and XINT (x, 1). Since there's no direct replacement for XINT, and since people should never use it even if there were, the patch changes the example to use INT_LIST instead. The patch also changes subreg-related helper functions so that they too take and return polynomial offsets. This makes the patch quite big, but it's mostly mechanical. The patch generally sticks to existing choices wrt signedness. 2017-12-20 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi: Update documentation of SUBREG_BYTE. 2017-12-20poly_int: rtx constantsRichard Sandiford1-0/+14
This patch adds an rtl representation of poly_int values. There were three possible ways of doing this: (1) Add a new rtl code for the poly_ints themselves and store the coefficients as trailing wide_ints. This would give constants like: (const_poly_int [c0 c1 ... cn]) The runtime value would be: c0 + c1 * x1 + ... + cn * xn (2) Like (1), but use rtxes for the coefficients. This would give constants like: (const_poly_int [(const_int c0) (const_int c1) ... (const_int cn)]) although the coefficients could be const_wide_ints instead of const_ints where appropriate. (3) Add a new rtl code for the polynomial indeterminates, then use them in const wrappers. A constant like c0 + c1 * x1 would then look like: (const:M (plus:M (mult:M (const_param:M x1) (const_int c1)) (const_int c0))) There didn't seem to be that much to choose between them. The main advantage of (1) is that it's a more efficient representation and that we can refer to the cofficients directly as wide_int_storage. 2017-12-20 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi (const_poly_int): Document. 2017-12-14poly_int: add poly-int.hRichard Sandiford1-0/+9
This patch adds a new "poly_int" class to represent polynomial integers of the form: C0 + C1*X1 + C2*X2 ... + Cn*Xn It also adds poly_int-based typedefs for offsets and sizes of various precisions. In these typedefs, the Ci coefficients are compile-time constants and the Xi indeterminates are run-time invariants. The number of coefficients is controlled by the target and is initially 1 for all ports. Most routines can handle general coefficient counts, but for now a few are specific to one or two coefficients. Support for other coefficient counts can be added when needed. The patch also adds a new macro, IN_TARGET_CODE, that can be set to indicate that a TU contains target-specific rather than target-independent code. When this macro is set and the number of coefficients is 1, the poly-int.h classes define a conversion operator to a constant. This allows most existing target code to work without modification. The main exceptions are: - values passed through ..., which need an explicit conversion to a constant - ?: expression in which one arm ends up being a polynomial and the other remains a constant. In these cases it would be valid to convert the constant to a polynomial and the polynomial to a constant, so a cast is needed to break the ambiguity. The patch also adds a new target hook to return the estimated value of a polynomial for costing purposes. The patch also adds operator<< on wide_ints (it was already defined for offset_int and widest_int). I think this was originally excluded because >> is ambiguous for wide_int, but << is useful for converting bytes to bits, etc., so is worth defining on its own. The patch also adds operator% and operator/ for offset_int and widest_int, since those types are always signed. These changes allow the poly_int interface to be more predictable. I'd originally tried adding the tests as selftests, but that ended up bloating cc1 by at least a third. It also took a while to build them at -O2. The patch therefore uses plugin tests instead, where we can force the tests to be built at -O0. They still run in negligible time when built that way. 2017-12-14 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * poly-int.h: New file. * poly-int-types.h: Likewise. * coretypes.h: Include them. 2017-11-09Be stricter about CONST_VECTOR operandsRichard Sandiford1-1/+2
The recent gen_vec_duplicate patches used CONST_VECTOR for all constants, but the documentation says: @findex const_vector @item (const_vector:@var{m} [@var{x0} @var{x1} @dots{}]) Represents a vector constant. The square brackets stand for the vector containing the constant elements. @var{x0}, @var{x1} and so on are the @code{const_int}, @code{const_double} or @code{const_fixed} elements. Both the AArch32 and AArch64 ports relied on the elements having this form and would ICE if the element was something like a CONST instead. This showed up as a failure in vect-126.c for both arm-eabi and aarch64-elf (but not aarch64-linux-gnu, which is what the series was tested on). The two obvious options were to redefine CONST_VECTOR to accept all constants or make gen_vec_duplicate honour the existing documentation. It looks like other code also assumes that integer CONST_VECTORs contain CONST_INTs, so the patch does the latter. I deliberately didn't add an assert to gen_const_vec_duplicate because it looks like the SPU port *does* expect to be able to create CONST_VECTORs of symbolic constants. Also, I think the list above should include const_wide_int for vectors of TImode and wider. The new routine takes a mode for consistency with the generators, and because I think it does make sense to accept all constants for variable-length: (const (vec_duplicate ...)) rather than have some rtxes for which we instead use: (vec_duplicate (const ...)) 2017-11-09 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi (const_vector): Say that elements can be const_wide_ints too. * emit-rtl.h (valid_for_const_vec_duplicate_p): Declare. * emit-rtl.c (valid_for_const_vec_duplicate_p): New function. 2017-11-09Base subreg rules on REGMODE_NATURAL_SIZE rather than UNITS_PER_WORDRichard Sandiford1-14/+28
Originally subregs operated at the word level and subreg offsets were measured in words. The offset units were later changed from words to bytes (SUBREG_WORD became SUBREG_BYTE), but the fundamental assumption that subregs should operate at the word level remained. Whether (subreg:M1 (reg:M2 R2) N) is well-formed depended on the way that M1 and M2 partitioned into words and whether the subword part of N represented a lowpart. However, some questions depended instead on the macro REGMODE_NATURAL_SIZE, which was introduced as part of the patch that moved from SUBREG_WORD to SUBREG_BYTE. It is used to decide whether setting (subreg:M1 (reg:M2 R2) N) clobbers all of R2 or just part of it (df_read_modify_subreg). Using words doesn't really make sense for modern vector architectures. Vector registers are usually bigger than a word and: (a) setting the scalar lowpart of them usually clobbers the rest of the register (contrary to the subreg rules, where only the containing words should be clobbered). (b) high words of vector registers are often not independently addressable, even though that's what the subreg rules expect. This patch therefore uses REGMODE_NATURAL_SIZE instead of UNITS_PER_WORD to determine the size of the independently addressable blocks in an inner register. This is needed for SVE because the number of words in a vector mode isn't known at compile time, so isn't a sensible basis for calculating the number of registers. The only existing port to define REGMODE_NATURAL_SIZE is 64-bit SPARC, where FP registers are 32 bits. (This is the opposite of the use case for SVE, since the natural division is smaller than a word.) I compiled the testsuite before and after the patch for sparc64-linux-gnu and the only test whose assembly changed was g++.dg/debug/pr65678.C, where the order of two independent stores was reversed and where a different register was picked for one pseudo. The new code was otherwise equivalent to the old code. 2017-11-09 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi: Rewrite the subreg rules so that they partition the inner register into REGMODE_NATURAL_SIZE bytes rather than UNITS_PER_WORD bytes. * emit-rtl.c (validate_subreg): Divide subregs into blocks based on REGMODE_NATURAL_SIZE of the inner mode. 2017-11-01Add a VEC_SERIES rtl codeRichard Sandiford1-1/+6
This patch adds an rtl representation of a vector linear series of the form: a[I] = BASE + I * STEP Like vec_duplicate; - the new rtx can be used for both constant and non-constant vectors - when used for constant vectors it is wrapped in a (const ...) - the constant form is only used for variable-length vectors; fixed-length vectors still use CONST_VECTOR At the moment the code is restricted to integer elements, to avoid concerns over floating-point rounding. 2017-11-01 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi (vec_series): Document. 2017-11-01Allow vector CONSTsRichard Sandiford1-8/+11
This patch allows (const ...) wrappers to be used for rtx vector constants, as an alternative to const_vector. This is useful for SVE, where the number of elements isn't known until runtime. It could also be useful in future for fixed-length vectors, to reduce the amount of memory needed to represent simple constants with high element counts. However, one nice thing about keeping it restricted to variable-length vectors is that there is never any need to handle combinations of (const ...) and CONST_VECTOR. 2017-11-01 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi (const): Update description of address constants. 2017-10-23Convert STARTING_FRAME_OFFSET to a hookRichard Sandiford1-2/+2
I took the documentation of the FRAME_GROWS_DOWNWARD behaviour from the version that was in most header files, since the one in the manual seemed less clear. The patch deliberately keeps FIRST_PARM_OFFSET(FNDECL) in microblaze_starting_frame_offset; this seems to be a port-local convention and takes advantage of the fact that FIRST_PARM_OFFSET doesn't read FNDECL. 2017-10-23 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * target.def (starting_frame_offset): New hook. * doc/tm.texi (STARTING_FRAME_OFFSET): Remove in favor of... 2017-08-22Make more use of paradoxical_subreg_pRichard Sandiford1-1/+1
This patch makes more use of the existing paradoxical_subreg_p predicate and also adds a version that operates on outer and inner modes. Some of the affected tests were based on GET_MODE_SIZE rather than GET_MODE_PRECISION and so the patch could change the result for modes that have the same size but different precisions. I think in each case the change should be a no-op or more correct, since a mode with precision N bits can't be expected to hold all of a mode with precision M>N bits. The patch changes the branch taken in simplify_subreg for modes with equal precision, but the new form matches the commentary more closely. Both branches should be equally good in that situation. 2017-08-22 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * rtl.h (paradoxical_subreg_p): Define inline, and add a version that takes the outer and inner modes. * doc/rtl.texi: Use paradoxical_subreg_p instead of a GET_MODE_SIZE comparison as the canonical test for a paradoxical subreg. * combine.c (simplify_set): Use paradoxical_subreg_p.
