2020-07-22c++: More cleanups for modern C++Nathan Sidwell1-13/+11
Here are some more places where we can declare variables at the assignment point, rather than use C89. Also, let's name our variables by what they contain -- the register allocator is perfectly able to track liveness for us. gcc/cp/ * decl.c (decls_match): Move variables into scopes they're needed in. (duplicate_decls): Use STRIP_TEMPLATE. (build_typename_type): Move var decls to their assignments. (begin_function_body): Likewise. * decl2.c (get_guard): Likewise. (mark_used): Use true for truthiness. * error.c (dump_aggr_type): Hold the decl in a var called 'decl', not 'name'.
2020-06-05c++: Fix pretty-print of pointer minus integer.Jason Merrill1-1/+8
For whatever reason, GCC internally represents a pointer minus an integer as a pointer plus a very large unsigned integer. But exposing that to users is unsightly, and it's easy enough to show the real value. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * error.c (dump_binary_op): Handle negative operand to POINTER_PLUS_EXPR. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-pretty-print.c (pp_c_additive_expression): Handle negative operand to POINTER_PLUS_EXPR. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * g++.dg/cpp0x/constexpr-ptrsub2.C: New test.
2020-04-28c++: Parameter pack in requires parameter list [PR94808]Patrick Palka1-12/+4
When printing the substituted parameter list of a requires-expression as part of the "in requirements with ..." context line during concepts diagnostics, we weren't considering that substitution into a parameter pack can yield zero or multiple parameters. This patch changes the way we print the parameter list of a requires-expression in print_requires_expression_info. We now print the dependent form of the parameter list (along with its template parameter mapping) instead of printing its substituted form. Besides being an improvement in its own, this also sidesteps the substitution issue in the PR altogether. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: PR c++/94808 * error.c (print_requires_expression_info): Print the dependent form of the parameter list with its template parameter mapping, rather than printing the substituted form. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: PR c++/94808 * g++.dg/concepts/diagnostic12.C: New test. * g++.dg/concepts/diagnostic5.C: Adjust dg-message.
2020-04-13c++: Infinite diagnostic loop with decltype([]{}) [PR94521]Patrick Palka1-0/+2
We are hitting a recursive loop when printing the signature of a function containing a decltype([]{}) type. The loop is dump_function_decl -> dump_substitution -> dump_template_bindings -> dump_type -> dump_aggr_type -> dump_scope -> dump_function_decl and we loop because dump_template_bindings wants to print the resolved type of decltype([]{}) (i.e. just a lambda type), so it calls dump_aggr_type, which wants to print the function scope of the lambda type. But the function scope of the lambda type is the function which we're in the middle of printing. This patch breaks the loop by passing TFF_NO_FUNCTION_ARGUMENTS to dump_function_decl from dump_scope, so that we avoid recursing into dump_substitution and ultimately looping. This also means we no longer emit the "[with ...]" clause when printing a function template scope, and we instead just emit its template argument list in a more natural way, e.g. instead of foo(int, char) [with T=bool]::x we would now print foo<bool>::x which seems like an improvement on its own. The full signature of the function 'spam' in the below testcase is now void spam(decltype (<lambda>)*) [with T = int; decltype (<lambda>) = spam<int>::<lambda()>] gcc/cp/ChangeLog: PR c++/94521 * error.c (dump_scope): Pass TFF_NO_FUNCTION_ARGUMENTS to dump_function_decl when printing a function template instantiation as a scope. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: PR c++/94521 * g++.dg/cpp2a/lambda-uneval12.C: New test.
2020-03-20c++: Include the constraint parameter mapping in diagnostic constraint contextsPatrick Palka1-25/+10
When diagnosing a constraint error, we currently try to print the constraint inside a diagnostic constraint context with its template arguments substituted in. If substitution fails, then we instead just print the dependent form, as in the test case below: .../diagnostic6.C:14:15: error: static assertion failed 14 | static_assert(E<int>); // { dg-error "static assertion failed|not a class" } | ^~~~~~ .../diagnostic6.C:14:15: note: constraints not satisfied .../diagnostic6.C:4:11: required for the satisfaction of ‘C<T>’ .../diagnostic6.C:8:11: required for the satisfaction of ‘D<typename T::type>’ .../diagnostic6.C:14:15: error: ‘int’ is not a class, struct, or union type But printing just the dependent form sometimes makes it difficult to understand the underlying failure. In the above example, for instance, there's no indication of how the template argument 'int' relates to either of the 'T's. This patch improves the situation by changing these diagnostics to always print the dependent form of the constraint, and alongside it the (preferably substituted) constraint parameter mapping. So with the same test case below we now get: .../diagnostic6.C:14:15: error: static assertion failed 14 | static_assert(E<int>); // { dg-error "static assertion failed|not a class" } | ^~~~~~ .../diagnostic6.C:14:15: note: constraints not satisfied .../diagnostic6.C:4:11: required for the satisfaction of ‘C<T>’ [with T = typename T::type] .../diagnostic6.C:8:11: required for the satisfaction of ‘D<typename T::type>’ [with T = int] .../diagnostic6.C:14:15: error: ‘int’ is not a class, struct, or union type This change arguably makes it easier to figure out what's going on whenever a constraint fails due to substitution creating an invalid type rather than failing due to the constraint evaluating to false. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * cxx-pretty-print.c (pp_cxx_parameter_mapping): Make extern. Move the "[with ]" bits to here from ... (pp_cxx_atomic_constraint): ... here. * cxx-pretty-print.h (pp_cxx_parameter_mapping): Declare. * error.c (rebuild_concept_check): Delete. (print_concept_check_info): Print the dependent form of the constraint and the preferably substituted parameter mapping alongside it. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * g++.dg/concepts/diagnostic6.C: New test.
2020-02-10c++: Improve dump_decl for standard conceptsPatrick Palka1-10/+8
This patch improves the pretty printing of standard concept definitions in error messages. In particular, standard concepts are now printed qualified whenever appropriate, and the "concept" specifier is printed only when the TFF_DECL_SPECIFIERS flag is specified. In the below test, the first error message changes from 9:15: error: ‘b’ was not declared in this scope; did you mean ‘concept b’? to 9:15: error: ‘b’ was not declared in this scope; did you mean ‘a::b’? gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * error.c (dump_decl) [CONCEPT_DECL]: Use dump_simple_decl. (dump_simple_decl): Handle standard concept definitions as well as variable concept definitions. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * g++.dg/cpp2a/concepts6.C: New test.
2020-02-10c++: Fux strncmp last argument in dump_decl_name [PR93641]Jakub Jelinek1-1/+1
I'm not aware of symbols starting with _ZG that don't start with _ZGR prefix, but perhaps in the future there might be some. 2020-02-10 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR other/93641 * error.c (dump_decl_name): Fix up last argument to strncmp.
2020-02-07c++: Fix use of local in constexpr if.Jason Merrill1-6/+0
extract_local_specs wasn't finding the mention of 'an' as a template argument because we weren't walking into template arguments. So here I changed cp_walk_subtrees to do so--only walking into template arguments in the spelling of the type or expression, not any hidden behind typedefs. The change to use typedef_variant_p avoids looking through typedefs spelled with 'typedef' as well as those spelled with 'using'. And then I removed some now-redundant code for walking into template arguments in a couple of walk_tree callbacks. PR c++/92654 * tree.c (cp_walk_subtrees): Walk into type template arguments. * cp-tree.h (TYPE_TEMPLATE_INFO_MAYBE_ALIAS): Use typedef_variant_p instead of TYPE_ALIAS_P. * pt.c (push_template_decl_real): Likewise. (find_parameter_packs_r): Likewise. Remove dead code. * error.c (find_typenames_r): Remove dead code.

2019-12-11Introduce pretty_printer::clone vfuncDavid Malcolm1-0/+5
This patch provides a way to clone a pretty_printer. This is needed so that we can capture text in a label_text and make layout decisions based on it, using the policy of global_dc's printer, whilst within a call to diagnostic_show_locus. We can't print with the pretty_printer itself within a call to diagnostic_show_locus since it has partly-buffered content. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-pretty-print.c (c_pretty_printer::clone): New vfunc implementation. * c-pretty-print.h (c_pretty_printer::clone): New vfunc decl. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * cxx-pretty-print.c (cxx_pretty_printer::clone): New vfunc implementation. * cxx-pretty-print.h (cxx_pretty_printer::clone): New vfunc decl. * error.c (cxx_format_postprocessor::clone): New vfunc. gcc/ChangeLog: * pretty-print.c (pretty_printer::pretty_printer): New copy-ctor. 2019-12-10Replace label_text ctor with "borrow" and "take"David Malcolm1-2/+2
libcpp's label_text class wraps a text buffer, along with a flag to determine if it "owns" the buffer. The existing ctor exposed this directly, but I found it difficult to remember the sense of flag, so this patch hides the ctor, in favor of static member functions "borrow" and "take", to make the effect on ownership explicit in the name. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-format.c (range_label_for_format_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor called with true with label_text::take. gcc/c/ChangeLog: * c-objc-common.c (range_label_for_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor calls. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * error.c (range_label_for_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor calls with label_text::borrow. gcc/ChangeLog: * gcc-rich-location.c (maybe_range_label_for_tree_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor call with label_text::borrow. * gcc-rich-location.h (text_range_label::get_text): Replace label_text ctor called with false with label_text::borrow. libcpp/ChangeLog: * include/line-map.h (label_text::label_text): Make private. 2019-11-27PR c++/92206 - ICE with typedef to dependent alias.Jason Merrill1-3/+3
rsandifo's patch for 92206 demonstrated a problem with the existing checking for alias template specializations: they were returning false for a typedef to an alias template specialization. Which is sometimes what the caller wants, and sometimes not: Sometimes we're interested in whether the type was written as an alias template-id, and sometimes whether it represents one. The testcase illustrates a case that remained wrong with the earlier patch: if the typedef is itself an alias template specialization, we can't strip an underlying dependent alias. * pt.c (dependent_alias_template_spec_p) (alias_template_specialization_p): Add transparent_typedefs parameter. 2019-11-05Implement C++20 operator<=>.Jason Merrill1-0/+1
There are three major pieces to this support: scalar operator<=>, synthesis of comparison operators, and rewritten/reversed overload resolution (e.g. a < b becomes 0 > b <=> a). Unlike other defaulted functions, where we use synthesized_method_walk to semi-simulate what the definition of the function will be like, this patch determines the characteristics of a comparison operator by trying to define it. My handling of non-dependent rewritten operators in templates can still use some work: build_min_non_dep_op_overload can't understand the rewrites and crashes, so I'm avoiding it for now by clearing *overload. This means we'll do name lookup again at instantiation time, which can incorrectly mean a different result. I'll poke at this more in stage 3. I'm leaving out a fourth section ("strong structural equality") even though I've implemented it, because it seems likely to change radically tomorrow. Thanks to Tim van Deurzen and Jakub for implementing lexing of the <=> operator, and Jonathan for the initial <compare> header. gcc/cp/ * cp-tree.h (struct lang_decl_fn): Add maybe_deleted bitfield. 2019-01-17[PR86648] use auto identifier for class placeholder templatesAlexandre Oliva1-0/+6
dwarf2out recognizes unspecified auto types by the identifier. C++ template class placeholders are unspecified auto types that take the identifier of the class rather than those used by preexisting auto types, so dwarf2out ICEs when it finds one of those. Alas, they may be visible to dwarf2out, since the types of e.g. static data members of templates are only deduced at member instantiation, i.e., if the data member is actually referenced, but the data member is added as a field, still with unspecified auto placeholder type, when the enclosing class is instantiated. I've changed placeholder creator to use an auto identifier instead, which allowed dropping the placeholder test in C++'s is_auto (alas, it can't be used in dwarf2out, think LTO). To avoid losing information in error messages and dumps and whatnot, I've added code to recognize placeholders for template classes say A and print them out as A<...auto...>. for gcc/cp/ChangeLog PR c++/86648 * pt.c (make_template_placeholder): Use auto_identifier. 2018-11-29C++: namespaces and scopes for enum values (PR c++/88121)David Malcolm1-2/+23
Consider this test case: namespace json { enum { JSON_OBJECT }; } void test () { JSON_OBJECT; } which erroneously accesses an enum value in another namespace without qualifying the access. GCC 6 through 8 issue a suggestion that doesn't mention the namespace: <source>: In function 'void test()': <source>:8:3: error: 'JSON_OBJECT' was not declared in this scope JSON_OBJECT; ^~~~~~~~~~~ <source>:8:3: note: suggested alternative: <source>:3:10: note: 'JSON_OBJECT' enum { JSON_OBJECT }; ^~~~~~~~~~~ which is suboptimal. I made the problem worse with r265610, which consolidates the single suggestion into the error, and emits: <source>: In function 'void test()': <source>:8:3: error: 'JSON_OBJECT' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'JSON_OBJECT'? 8 | JSON_OBJECT; | ^~~~~~~~~~~ | JSON_OBJECT <source>:3:10: note: 'JSON_OBJECT' declared here 3 | enum { JSON_OBJECT }; | ^~~~~~~~~~~ where the message: 'JSON_OBJECT' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'JSON_OBJECT'? is nonsensical. This patch tweaks dump_scope to detect unscoped enums, and to use the enclosing namespace for them, so that the CONST_DECL is dumped as "json::JSON_OBJECT". This changes the output for the above so that it refers to the namespace, fixing the issue: <source>:8:3: error: 'JSON_OBJECT' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'json::JSON_OBJECT'? 9 | JSON_OBJECT; | ^~~~~~~~~~~ | json::JSON_OBJECT <source>3:10: note: 'json::JSON_OBJECT' declared here 3 | enum { JSON_OBJECT }; | ^~~~~~~~~~~ The patch also fixes scope-printing for values within scoped enums. To exercise this, the patch extends the scanner for namespaces for exact matches for a name, so that we also scan inside scoped enums, to cover the case where someone doesn't supply the scope. Hence with the patch given e.g.: enum class vegetable { CARROT, TURNIP }; we're able to offer e.g.: suggestions-scoped-enums.C:50:3: error: 'CARROT' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'vegetable::CARROT'? 50 | CARROT; | ^~~~~~ | vegetable::CARROT and this exercises the code path above. The patch updates dump_scope for scoped enums so that we print the scope when printing the value ("vegetable::CARROT"), rather than just the name of the value ("CARROT"). Finally, the patch adds spell-corrections within a scoped enum, giving e.g.: suggestions-scoped-enums.C:18:14: error: 'TURNUP' is not a member of 'vegetable'; did you mean 'TURNIP'? 18 | vegetable::TURNUP; | ^~~~~~ | TURNIP gcc/cp/ChangeLog: PR c++/88121 * cp-name-hint.h (suggest_alternative_in_scoped_enum): New decl. * error.c (dump_scope): Ensure that we print any scope for values of unscoped enums. 2018-11-05Implement P0732R2, class types in non-type template parameters.Jason Merrill1-0/+3
There is one significant piece of this that is not implemented yet: the reliance on defaulted operator<=>, which someone else has been working on. So, for the moment those lines are commented out of the testcases. One tricky bit was treating template parameters of classtype as const lvalues without making their decltype const; for this I used a VIEW_CONVERT_EXPR wrapper, which previously could only appear in templates as location wrappers. The user-defined literal parts of P0732R2 are in the next patch. gcc/cp/ * error.c (dump_simple_decl): Look through a template parm object. * mangle.c (write_template_arg): Likewise. 2018-10-29C++: simplify output from suggest_alternatives_forDavid Malcolm1-7/+36
In the C++ FE, after emitting various errors about unrecognized names, the parser can call suggest_alternatives_for and/or suggest_alternative_in_explicit_scope. These can issue zero or more suggestions for the unrecognized name, or various other "note" diagnostics suggesting how to fix the problem. For example, currently g++ emits: t.cc:12:3: error: 'gtk_widget_showall' was not declared in this scope 12 | gtk_widget_showall (w); | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ t.cc:12:3: note: suggested alternative: 'gtk_widget_show_all' 12 | gtk_widget_showall (w); | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | gtk_widget_show_all This patch consolidates the common case when there is a single candidate, so that the error can issue a fix-it hint directly. This simplifies the above to: t.cc:12:3: error: 'gtk_widget_showall' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'gtk_widget_show_all'? 12 | gtk_widget_showall (w); | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | gtk_widget_show_all omitting the second "note" diagnostic. Doing so requires changing the above "suggest_" functions so that rather than being called after "error" and emitting a note directly, they are called before the "error", and return a name_hint, which can contain a suggestion and/or a deferred diagnostic. The "single candidate" case is handled via a suggestion, and the "multiple candidates" case via a new subclass of deferred_diagnostic. There was some complication due to the fact that we don't always have enough location information to issue a fix-it hint. Specifically, for the case in qualified_name_lookup_error, the location is that of the name, but the location of the qualifier prefix isn't reliably available. For some hints, e.g. spell-corrections, the replacement is of the name, and for others, e.g. parent namespaces, it's for the qualified name. The patch addresses this by splitting this case out into a new "suggest_alternatives_in_other_namespaces" function, for which fix-it hints aren't issued. Another complication is that of emitting a note when --param cxx-max-namespaces-for-diagnostic-help is reached. The patch emulates the existing behavior by emitting the note from a deferred_diagnostic. This potentially needs to co-exist with another deferred_diagnostic, so it works as a decorator around any other such deferred_diagnostic. Doing so requires slightly extending class name_hint. On adding test coverage for the various cases, I discovered that after emitting a "FOO is not a namespace-name" error, we also emit a "expected namespace-name before" error. The patch removes this second error for the case where it's redundant, simplifying this case from e.g.: spellcheck-ns.C:10:24: error: 'inner_ms' is not a namespace-name 10 | using namespace outer::inner_ms; | ^~~~~~~~ spellcheck-ns.C:10:24: note: suggested alternative: 'inner_ns' 10 | using namespace outer::inner_ms; | ^~~~~~~~ | inner_ns spellcheck-ns.C:10:32: error: expected namespace-name before ';' token 10 | using namespace outer::inner_ms; | ^ to: spellcheck-ns.C:10:24: error: 'inner_ms' is not a namespace-name; did you mean 'inner_ns'? 10 | using namespace outer::inner_ms; | ^~~~~~~~ | inner_ns include/ChangeLog: * unique-ptr.h (gnu::move): Generalize so it applies to all lvalue references, rather than just to unique_ptr values. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * name-hint.h (name_hint::take_deferred): New member function. gcc/c/ChangeLog: * c-decl.c (implicit_decl_warning): Update "is there a suggestion" logic for change to name_hint::operator bool. 2018-08-27Less verbose fix-it hints for missing header files (PR 87091)David Malcolm1-1/+1
This patch tweaks maybe_add_include_fixit so that if we're emitting a note about adding the header file, the note's primary location will be replaced by that of the fix-it hint, to avoid repeating a location we've already emitted (or one close to it). For example, this simplifies: ../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:87:27: error: msg 1 87 | using vector = std::vector<_Tp, polymorphic_allocator<_Tp>>; | ^~~~~~ ../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:87:22: note: msg 2 73 | # include <debug/vector> +++ |+#include <vector> 74 | #endif .... 87 | using vector = std::vector<_Tp, polymorphic_allocator<_Tp>>; | ^~~ to: ../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:87:27: error: msg 1 87 | using vector = std::vector<_Tp, polymorphic_allocator<_Tp>>; | ^~~~~~ ../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:74:1: note: msg 2 73 | # include <debug/vector> +++ |+#include <vector> 74 | #endif eliminating the repetition of line 87 in the note. Doing so requires converting show_caret_p to a tri-state, to avoid meaninglessly printing a caret for the first column in the next line (and colorizing it): ../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:74:1: note: msg 2 73 | # include <debug/vector> +++ |+#include <vector> 74 | #endif | ^ gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: PR 87091 * c-common.c (c_cpp_error): Update for conversion of show_caret_p to a tri-state. 2018-08-20Add support for grouping of related diagnostics (PR other/84889)David Malcolm1-0/+2
We often emit logically-related groups of diagnostics. A relatively simple case is this: if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); where the "note" diagnostic issued by the "inform" call is guarded by the -Wmultistatement_macros warning. More complicated examples can be seen in the C++ frontend, where e.g. print_z_candidates can lead to numerous "note" diagnostics being emitted. I'm looking at various ways to improve how we handle such related diagnostics, but, prior to this patch, there was no explicit relationship between these diagnostics: the diagnostics subsystem had no way of "knowing" that these were related. This patch introduces a simple way to group the diagnostics: an auto_diagnostic_group class: all diagnostics emitted within the lifetime of an auto_diagnostic_group instance are logically grouped. Hence in the above example, the two diagnostics can be grouped by simply adding an auto_diagnostic_group instance: auto_diagnostic_group d; if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); Some more awkard cases are of the form: if (some_condition && warning_at (...) && more_conditions) inform (...); which thus need restructuring to: if (some_condition) { auto_diagnostic_group d; warning_at (...); if (more_conditions) inform (...); } so that the lifetime of the auto_diagnostic_group groups the warning_at and the inform call. Nesting is handled by simply tracking a nesting depth within the diagnostic_context.: all diagnostics are treated as grouped until the final auto_diagnostic_group is popped. diagnostic.c uses this internally, so that all diagnostics are part of a group - those that are "by themselves" are treated as being part of a group with one element. The diagnostic_context gains optional callbacks for displaying the start of a group (when the first diagnostic is emitted within it), and the end of a group (for when the group was non-empty); these callbacks are unused by default, but a test plugin demonstrates them (and verifies that the machinery is working). As noted above, I'm looking at various ways to use the grouping to improve how we output the diagnostics. FWIW, I experimented with a more involved implementation, of the form: diagnostic_group d; if (d.warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) d.inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); which had the advantage of allowing auto-detection of the places where groups were needed (by converting ::warning_at's return type to bool), but it was a much more invasive patch, especially when dealing with the places in the C++ frontend that can emit numerous notes after an error or warning (and thus having to pass the group around) Hence I went with this simpler approach. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: PR other/84889 * c-attribs.c (common_handle_aligned_attribute): Add auto_diagnostic_group instance. * c-indentation.c (warn_for_misleading_indentation): Likewise. * c-opts.c (c_common_post_options): Likewise. * c-warn.c (warn_logical_not_parentheses): Likewise. 2018-08-15diagnostics: add labeling of source rangesDavid Malcolm1-0/+28
This patch adds the ability to label source ranges within a rich_location, to be printed by diagnostic_show_locus. For example: pr69554-1.c:11:18: error: invalid operands to binary + (have 'const char *' and 'const char *') 11 | return (p + 1) + (q + 1); | ~~~~~~~ ^ ~~~~~~~ | | | | | const char * | const char * The patch implements labels for various type mismatch errors in the C and C++ frontends, and in -Wformat. I implemented it wherever accurate location information was guaranteed (there are other places that could benefit, but we need better location information in those places). The labels can be disabled via -fno-diagnostics-show-labels. Similarly: param-type-mismatch.C: In function 'int test_1(int, int, float)': param-type-mismatch.C:11:27: error: invalid conversion from 'int' to 'const char*' [-fpermissive] 11 | return callee_1 (first, second, third); | ^~~~~~ | | | int param-type-mismatch.C:7:43: note: initializing argument 2 of 'int callee_1(int, const char*, float)' 7 | extern int callee_1 (int one, const char *two, float three); | ~~~~~~~~~~~~^~~ where the first "error" describing the bad argument gets a label describing the type inline (since it's non-obvious from "second"). The "note" describing the type of the param of the callee *doesn't* get a label, since that information is explicit there in the source ("const char *two"). The idea is that in any diagnostic where two aspects of the source aren't in sync it ought to be easier for the user if we directly show them the mismatching aspects inline (e.g. types). As well as type mismatch errors, perhaps labels could also be used for buffer overflow warnings, for describing the capacity of the destination buffer vs the size of what's being written: sprintf (buf, "filename: %s\n", file); ^~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~^~~ | | capacity: 32 10 + strlen(file) + 2 or somesuch. Another idea might be for macro expansion warnings: warning: repeated side effects in macro expansion... x = MIN (p++, q++); ~~~~^~~~~~~~~~ note: ...expanded here as #define MIN(X,Y) (X<Y?X:Y) ^~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ | | | | | | | | | | | q++ | | | | p++ | | | q++ | q++ p++ p++ The patch removes some logic from multiline.exp which special-cased lines ending with a '|' character (thus complicating testing of this patch). I believe that this was a vestige from experiments I did to support strippng dg directives from the output; it was present in the earliest version of multiline.exp I posted: "[RFC, stage1] Richer source location information for gcc 6 (location ranges etc)" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2015-03/msg00837.html and I believe was neved used. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-format.c: Include "selftest-diagnostic.h" and "gcc-rich-location.h". 2018-04-18[PR c++/80290] recycle tinst garbage soonerAlexandre Oliva1-6/+6
tinst_level objects are created during template instantiation, and they're most often quite short-lived, but since there's no intervening garbage collection, they accumulate throughout the pass while most by far could be recycled after a short while. The original testcase in PR80290, for example, creates almost 55 million tinst_level objects, all but 10 thousand of them without intervening GC, but we don't need more than 284 of them live at a time. Furthermore, in many cases, TREE_LIST objects are created to stand for the decl in tinst_level. In most cases, those can be recycled as soon as the tinst_level object is recycled; in some relatively common cases, they are modified and reused in up to 3 tinst_level objects. In the same testcase, TREE_LISTs are used in all but 3 thousand of the tinst_level objects, and we don't need more than 89 tinst_level objects with TREE_LISTs live at a time. Furthermore, all but 2 thousand of those are created without intervening GC. This patch arranges for tinst_level objects to be refcounted (I've seen as many as 20 live references to a single tinst_level object in my testing), and for pending_template, tinst_level and TREE_LIST objects that can be recycled to be added to freelists; that's much faster than ggc_free()ing them and reallocating them shortly thereafter. In fact, the introduction of such freelists is what makes this entire patch lighter-weight, when it comes to memory use, and faster. With refcounting alone, the total memory footprint was still about the same, and we spent more time. In order to further reduce memory use, I've arranged for us to create TREE_LISTs lazily, only at points that really need them (when printing error messages). This grows tinst_level by an additional pointer, but since a TREE_LIST holds a lot more than an extra pointer, and tinst_levels with TREE_LISTs used to be allocated tens of thousands of times more often than plain decl ones, we still save memory overall. I was still not quite happy about growing memory use in cases that used template classes but not template overload resolution, so I changed the type of the errors field to unsigned short, from int. With that change, in_system_header_p and refcount move into the same word or half-word that used to hold errors, releasing a full word, bringing tinst_level back to its original size, now without any padding. The errors field is only used to test whether we've had any errors since the expansion of some template, to skip the expansion of further templates. If we get 2^16 errors or more, it is probably reasonable to refrain from expanding further templates, even if we would expand them before this change. With these changes, compile time for the original testcase at -O0, with default checking enabled, is cut down by some 3.7%, total GCable memory allocation is cut down by almost 20%, and total memory use (as reported by GNU time as maxresident) is cut down by slightly over 15%. for gcc/cp/ChangeLog PR c++/80290 * cp-tree.h (struct tinst_level): Split decl into tldcl and targs. 2018-01-10Preserving locations for variable-uses and constants (PR c++/43486)David Malcolm1-1/+1
This patch implements location wrapper nodes, preserving source locations of the uses of variables and constants in various places in the C++ frontend: at the arguments at callsites, and for typeid, alignof, sizeof, and offsetof. For example, it allows the C++ FE to underline the pertinent argument for mismatching calls, for such expressions, improving: extern int callee (int one, const char *two, float three); int caller (int first, int second, float third) { return callee (first, second, third); } from test.cc: In function 'int caller(int, int, float)': test.cc:5:38: error: invalid conversion from 'int' to 'const char*' [-fpermissive] return callee (first, second, third); ^ test.cc:1:41: note: initializing argument 2 of 'int callee(int, const char*, float)' extern int callee (int one, const char *two, float three); ~~~~~~~~~~~~^~~ to: test.cc: In function 'int caller(int, int, float)': test.cc:5:25: error: invalid conversion from 'int' to 'const char*' [-fpermissive] return callee (first, second, third); ^~~~~~ test.cc:1:41: note: initializing argument 2 of 'int callee(int, const char*, float)' extern int callee (int one, const char *two, float three); ~~~~~~~~~~~~^~~ This is the combination of the following patches: "[PATCH 01/14] C++: preserve locations within build_address" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-11/msg00883.html "[PATCH v2.4 of 02/14] Support for adding and stripping location_t wrapper nodes" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2018-01/msg00591.html "[PATCH] Eliminate location wrappers in tree_nop_conversion/STRIP_NOPS" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-12/msg01330.html "[PATCH v4 of 03/14] C++: add location_t wrapper nodes during parsing (minimal impl)" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2018-01/msg00660.html "[PATCH 04/14] Update testsuite to show improvements" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-11/msg00891.html "[v3 of 05/14] C++: handle locations wrappers when calling warn_for_memset" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-12/msg01378.html "[PATCH 07/14] reject_gcc_builtin: strip any location wrappers" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-11/msg00886.html "[v3 of PATCH 08/14] cp/tree.c: strip location wrappers in lvalue_kind" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-12/msg01433.html "[PATCH 09/14] Strip location wrappers in null_ptr_cst_p" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-11/msg00888.html "[PATCH 11/14] Handle location wrappers in string_conv_p" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-11/msg00890.html "[PATCH 12/14] C++: introduce null_node_p" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-11/msg00894.html "[v3 of PATCH 13/14] c-format.c: handle location wrappers" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-12/msg01494.html "[PATCH 14/14] pp_c_cast_expression: don't print casts for location wrappers" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-11/msg00893.html "[v3 of PATCH 15/14] Use fold_for_warn in get_atomic_generic_size" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-12/msg01380.html "[PATCH] Add selftest for "fold_for_warn (error_mark_node)"" https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2017-12/msg01385.html gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: PR c++/43486 * c-common.c: Include "selftest.h". PR 62170 describes a problem with how the quoting in pp_format interacts with the "aka" information for typedefs in %qT for the C family of frontends, and also now for %qH and %qI in the C++ frontend: we print: 'Py_ssize_t* {aka int*}' ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ colorized as "quote" i.e. '[START_COLOR]Py_ssize_t* {aka int*}[END_COLOR]' when we should print: 'Py_ssize_t*' {aka 'int*'} ^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ colorized as "quote" i.e. '[START_COLOR]Py_ssize_t*[END_COLOR]' {aka '[START_COLOR]int*[END_COLOR]'} where the opening and closing quote characters and colorization are added by the 'q' handling within pp_format. This patch fixes the quoting by updating the %T handling in C and C++ and the %H/%I handling in C++ to insert the quoting appropriately. It converts the "quote" param of the pp_format_decoder callback from bool to bool *, allowing for the %T and %H/%I handlers to write false back to it, to avoid printing the closing quote for the cases like the above where the trailing closing quote isn't needed. It introduces pp_begin_quote/pp_end_quote to simplify this. These take a "bool show_color", rather than using "pp_show_color (pp)" since cxx_pp's pp_show_color isn't currently initialized (since cxx_initialize_diagnostics happens before diagnostic_color_init). gcc/c/ChangeLog: PR c++/62170 * c-objc-common.c (c_tree_printer): Convert penultimate param from bool to bool *. Within '%T' handling, if showing an "aka", use "quoted" param to add appropriate quoting. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: PR c++/62170 * error.c (type_to_string): Add leading comment.
