2024-07-14CRIS: Disable late-combine by default, related PR115883Hans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+37
With late-combine, performance for coremark compiled for cris-elf regresses 2.6% by performance and by size 0.4%, measured at r15-2005-g13757e50ff0b, when compiled with "-O2 -march=v10". Earlier, at r15-1880-gce34fcc572a0, numbers were by performance 3.2% and by size 0.4%, even with the proposed patch to PR115883 (TL;DR: a presumed bug in LRA or combine exposed by late-combine). Without that patch, about the same performance results (at that revision). Similarly around the late-combine commit (r15-1579-g792f97b44ffc5e). I briefly looked at the performance regression for coremark at r15-2005-g13757e50ff0b (with/without this patch) as far as seeing that the stack-frame grew larger (maxing out on hard registers and needing one more slot) for at least two of the top three* functions that regressed the most in terms of cycles per call: matrix_mul_matrix_bitextract (in coremark, 17% slower) and __subdf3 (in libgcc, 6.7% slower). That makes sense when considering that late-combine "naturally" stretches register life-times. But, looking at late_combine::combine_into_uses and late_combine::optimizable_set, nothing stood out to me. I guess there's improvement opportunities in late_combine::check_register_pressure. (*) I opted not to look at _dtoa_r (in newlib) mostly because it's boring and always shows up when something in gcc goes sideways. (It maxes out on hard registers and is big. End of story.) Note that the change of default is done in the TARGET_OVERRIDE_OPTIONS_AFTER_CHANGE worker, not in the TARGET_OPTION_OVERRIDE worker for reasons stated in the comment. * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_option_override_after_change): New function. Disable late-combine by default. (cris_option_override): Call the new function.

2023-12-24CRIS: Fix PR middle-end/113109; "throw" failingHans-Peter Nilsson3-2/+18
TL;DR: the "dse1" pass removed the eh-return-address store. The PA also marks its EH_RETURN_HANDLER_RTX as volatile, for the same reason, as does visum. See PR32769 - it's the same thing on PA. Conceptually, it's logical that stores to incoming args are optimized out on the return path or if no loads are seen - at least before epilogue expansion, when the subsequent load isn't seen in the RTL, as is the case for the "dse1" pass. I haven't looked into why this problem, that appeared for the PA already in 2007, was seen for CRIS only recently (with r14-6674-g4759383245ac97). 2023-12-05Allow targets to add USEs to asmsRichard Sandiford1-2/+4
Arm's SME has an array called ZA that for inline asm purposes is effectively a form of special-purpose memory. It doesn't have an associated storage type and so can't be passed and returned in normal C/C++ objects. We'd therefore like "za" in a clobber list to mean that an inline asm can read from and write to ZA. (Just reading or writing individually is unlikely to be useful, but we could add syntax for that too if necessary.) There is currently a TARGET_MD_ASM_ADJUST target hook that allows targets to add clobbers to an asm instruction. This patch extends that to allow targets to add USEs as well. gcc/ * target.def (md_asm_adjust): Add a uses parameter. * doc/tm.texi: Regenerate. * cfgexpand.cc (expand_asm_loc): Update call to md_asm_adjust. 2023-08-15CRIS: Don't include tree.h in cris-protos.h, PR bootstrap/111021Hans-Peter Nilsson2-6/+12
While there's another patch that fixes the immediate error in the PR by other means, the include of tree.h here is something I prefer to avoid. 2023-08-09targhooks: Extend legitimate_address_p with code_helper [PR110248]Kewen Lin2-2/+5
As PR110248 shows, some middle-end passes like IVOPTs can query the target hook legitimate_address_p with some artificially constructed rtx to determine whether some addressing modes are supported by target for some gimple statement. But for now the existing legitimate_address_p only checks the given mode, it's unable to distinguish some special cases unfortunately, for example, for LEN_LOAD ifn on Power port, we would expand it with lxvl hardware insn, which only supports one register to hold the address (the other register is holding the length), that is we don't support base (reg) + index (reg) addressing mode for sure. But hook legitimate_address_p only considers the given mode which would be some vector mode for LEN_LOAD ifn, and we do support base + index addressing mode for normal vector load and store insns, so the hook will return true for the query unexpectedly. This patch is to introduce one extra argument of type code_helper for hook legitimate_address_p, it makes targets able to handle some special case like what's described above. Typo spotted while doing CCmode improvements, as a missed optimization. It's almost visible from the patch context; there's not much done in terms of "mode-adjustment" when replacing (reg:CC CRIS_CC0_REGNUM) with a copy! This bug affects functions in the newlib printf-formatting functions (nothing else in libgcc or newlib libc), with the performance impact on coremark scores being less than 1e-6 (3/5078992 cycles, 6/48543 bytes). * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_postdbr_cmpelim): Correct mode of modeadjusted_dccr.
2023-05-06CRIS: peephole2 an add into two addq or subqHans-Peter Nilsson2-2/+29
Unfortunately, doesn't cause a performance improvement for coremark, but happens a few times in newlib, just enough to affect coremark 0.01% by size (or 4 bytes, and three cycles (__fwalk_sglue and __vfiprintf_r each two bytes). gcc: * config/cris/cris.md (splitop): Add PLUS. * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_split_constant): Also handle PLUS when a split into two insns may be useful. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/peep2-addsplit1.c: New test.
2023-05-06CRIS: peephole2 a move of constant followed by and of same registerHans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+38
While moves of constants into registers are separately optimizable, a combination of a move with a subsequent "and" is slightly preferable even if the move can be generated with the same number (and timing) of insns, as moves of "just" registers are eliminated now and then in different passes, loosely speaking. This movandsplit1 pattern feeds into the opsplit1/AND peephole2, with matching occurrences observed in the floating point functions in libgcc. Also, a test-case to fit. Coremark improvements are unimpressive: less than 0.0003% speed, 0.1% size. But that was pre-LRA; after the switch to LRA this peephole2 doesn't match anymore (for any of coremark, local tests, libgcc and newlib libc) and the test-case passes with and without the patch. Still, there's no apparent reason why LRA prefers "move R1,R2" "and I,R2" to "move I,R1" "and R1,R2", or why that wouldn't "randomly" change (also seen with other operations than "and"). Thus committed. gcc: * config/cris/cris.md (movandsplit1): New define_peephole2. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/peep2-movandsplit1.c: New test.
2023-05-06CRIS: peephole2 a lsrq into a lslq+lsrq pairHans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+53
Observed after opsplit1 with AND in libgcc floating-point functions, like the first spottings of opsplit1/AND opportunities. Two patterns are nominally needed, as the peephole2 optimizer continues from the *first replacement* insn, not from a minimum context for general matching; one that includes it as the last match. But, the "free-standing" opportunity (three shifts) didn't match by itself in a gcc build of libraries plus running the test-suite, and thus deemed uninteresting and left out. (As expected; if it had matched, that'd have indicated a previously missed optimization or other problem elsewhere.) Only the one that includes the previous define_peephole2 that may generate the sequence (i.e. opsplit1/AND), matches easily. Coremark results aren't impressive though: 0.003% improvement in speed and slightly less than 0.1% in size. A testcase is added to match and another one to cover a case of movulsr checking that it's used; it's preferable to lsrandsplit when both would match. gcc: * config/cris/cris.md (lsrandsplit1): New define_peephole2. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/peep2-lsrandsplit1.c, gcc.target/cris/peep2-movulsr2.c: New tests.
2023-05-04CRIS: peephole2 an "and" with a contiguous "one-sided" sequences of 1sHans-Peter Nilsson3-0/+110
This kind of transformation seems pretty generic and might be a candidate for adding to the middle-end, perhaps as part of combine. I noticed these happened more often for LRA, which is the reason I went on this track of low-hanging-fruit-microoptimizations that are such an itch when noticing them, inspecting generated code for libgcc. Unfortunately, this one improves coremark only by a few cycles at the beginning or end (<0.0005%) for cris-elf -march=v10. The size of the coremark code is down by 0.4% (0.22% pre-lra). Using an iterator from the start because other binary operations will be added and their define_peephole2's would look exactly the same for the .md part. Some existing and-peephole2-related tests suffered, because many of them were using patterns with only contiguous 1:s in them: adjusted. Also, spotted and fixed, by adding a space, some scan-assembler-strings that were prone to spurious identifier or file name matches. gcc: * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_split_constant): New function. * config/cris/cris.md (splitop): New iterator. This shows no difference neither in arith-rand-ll nor coremark numbers. Comparing libgcc and newlib libc before/after, the only difference can be seen in a few functions where it's mostly neutral (newlib's _svfprintf_r et al) and one function (__gdtoa), which improves ever so slightly (four bytes less; one load less, but one instruction reading from memory instead of a register). * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_side_effect_mode_ok): Use lra_in_progress, not reload_in_progress. * config/cris/cris.md ("movdi", "*addi_reload"): Ditto. * config/cris/constraints.md ("Q"): Ditto.
2023-05-01Enable LRA on several portsJeff Law1-3/+0
Spurred by Segher's RFC, I went ahead and tested several ports with LRA enabled. Not surprisingly, many failed, but a few built their full set of libraries successful and of those a few even ran their testsuites with no regressions. In fact, enabling LRA fixes a small number of failures on the iq2000 port. This patch converts the ports which built their libraries and have test results that are as good as or better than without LRA. There may be minor code quality regressions or there may be minor code quality improvements -- I'm leaving that for the port maintainers to own going forward. gcc/ * config/cris/cris.cc (TARGET_LRA_P): Remove. * config/epiphany/epiphany.cc (TARGET_LRA_P): Remove. * config/iq2000/iq2000.cc (TARGET_LRA_P): Remove. * config/m32r/m32r.cc (TARGET_LRA_P): Remove. * config/microblaze/microblaze.cc (TARGET_LRA_P): Remove. * config/mmix/mmix.cc (TARGET_LRA_P): Remove.
2023-03-30CRIS: Make rtx-cost 0 for many CONST_INT "quick" operandsHans-Peter Nilsson1-1/+22
Stepping through a gdb session inspecting costs that cause gcc.dg/tree-ssa/slsr-13.c to fail, exposed that before this patch, cris_rtx_costs told that a shift of 1 of a register costs 5, while adding two registers costs 4. Making the cost of a quick-immediate constant equal to using a register (default 0) reflects actual performance and size-cost better. It also happens to make gcc.dg/tree-ssa/slsr-13.c pass with what looks like better code being generated, and improves coremark performance by 0.4%. But, blindly doing this for *all* valid operands that fit the "quick-immediate" addressing mode, trips interaction with other factors*, with the end result mixed at best. So, do this only for MINUS and logical operations for the time being, and only for modes that fit in one register. *) Examples of "other factors": - A bad default implementation of insn_cost or actually, pattern_cost, that looks only at the set_src_cost and furthermore sees such a cost of 0 as invalid. (Compare to the more sane set_rtx_cost.) This naturally tripped up combine and ifcvt, causing all sorts of changes, good and bad. - Having the same cost, to compare a register with 0 as with -31..31, means a compare insn of an eliminable form no longer looks preferable. * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_rtx_costs) [CONST_INT]: Return 0 for many quick operands, for register-sized modes.
2023-03-28CRIS: Correct "T" to define_memory_constraint, not define_constraintHans-Peter Nilsson1-1/+1
This patch has no effect on builds using reload of libgcc, newlib libc, my own at-a-glance-testsuite and coremark. That somewhat surprisingly also goes for LRA builds, even with all CRIS reload_in_progress augmented to include lra_in_progress. I just noticed it when checking because another port had a similar fix, where it mattered for LRA. * config/cris/constraints.md ("T"): Correct to define_memory_constraint.
2023-03-28CRIS: Add peephole2 to handle gcc.target/cris/rld-legit1.c for LRAHans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+50
The test-case gcc.target/cris/rld-legit1.c is a reduced test-case that required defining LEGITIMIZE_RELOAD_ADDRESS to stop the address from being decomposed into several insns by reload. Valid but suboptimal code was generated. (Before implementing that hook for CRIS, the same test-case also exposed a bug in reload, and a fix was committed to avoid an ICE; see e.g. git r0-71992-gff0d9879ab0f30 and related commits. But, post-cc0, reload no longer handles this test-case without LEGITIMIZE_RELOAD_ADDRESS helping and there'd again an be ICE for CRIS (again: only if LEGITIMIZE_RELOAD_ADDRESS is disabled). There's a patch to reload to fix that, at https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2023-February/612039.html) But, LRA also does not handle that test-case gracefully, and like reload without LEGITIMIZE_RELOAD_ADDRESS for CRIS, decomposes the address into a suboptimal (but valid) sequence, about as messy as that from reload, and gcc.target/cris/rld-legit1.c would regress for LRA. There's nothing equivalent to LEGITIMIZE_RELOAD_ADDRESS for LRA. (Stepping through LRA, I can't find an obvious place where to put such a hook. Granted, I haven't seen this kind of messy decomposition in other code, so I'm not insisting a LEGITIMIZE_RELOAD_ADDRESS-like hook is a good idea.) These new peephole2's are required to not regress gcc.target/cris/rld-legit1.c with LRA enabled for CRIS. They don't appear to otherwise make a difference for neither libgcc, newlib libc, my own at-a-glance tests nor coremark, for neither LRA nor reload. * config/cris/cris.md (BW2): New mode-iterator. 2023-03-28CRIS: Improve bailing for eliminable compares for "addi" vs. "add"Hans-Peter Nilsson1-1/+52
This patch affects a post-reload define_split for CRIS that transforms a condition-code-clobbering addition into a non-clobbering addition. (A "two-operand" addition between registers is the only insn that has both a condition-code-clobbering and a non-clobbering variant for CRIS.) Many more "add.d":s are replaced by non-condition-code- clobbering "addi":s after this patch, but most of the transformations don't matter. CRIS with LRA generated code that exposed a flaw with the original patch: it bailed too easily, on *any* insn using the result of the addition. To wit, more effort than simply applying reg_mentioned_p is needed to inspect the user, in the code to avoid munging an insn sequence that cmpelim is supposed to handle. With this patch coremark score for CRIS (*with reload*) improves by less than 0.01% (a single "nop" is eliminated in core_state_transition, in an execution path that affects ~1/20 of all of the 10240 calls). However, the original cause for this patch is to not regress gcc.target/cris/pr93372-44.c for LRA, where otherwise a needless "cmpq" is emitted. For CRIS with LRA, the performance effect on coremark isn't even measurable, except by reducing the size of the executable due to affecting non-called library code. * config/cris/cris.md ("*add<mode>3_addi"): Improve to bail only for possible eliminable compares.

2022-02-02cris: Reload using special-regs before general-regsHans-Peter Nilsson2-6/+32
On code where reload has an effect (i.e. quite rarely, just enough to be noticeable), this change gets code quality back to the situation prior to "Remove CRIS v32 ACR artefacts". We had from IRA a pseudoregister marked to be reloaded from a union of all allocatable registers (here: SPEC_GENNONACR_REGS) but where the register-class corresponding to the constraint for the register-type alternative (here: GENERAL_REGS) was *not* a subset of that class: SPEC_GENNONACR_REGS (and GENNONACR_REGS) had a one-register "hole" for the ACR register, a register present in GENERAL_REGS. Code in reload.cc:find_reloads adds 4 to the cost of a register-type alternative that is neither a subset of the preferred register class nor vice versa and thus reload thinks it can't use. It would be preferable to look for a non-empty intersection of the two, and use that intersection for that alternative, something that can't be expressed because a register class can't be formed from a random register set. The effect was here that the GENERAL_REGS to/from memory alternatives ("r") had their cost raised such that the SPECIAL_REGS alternatives ("x") looked better. This happened to improve code quality just a little bit compared to GENERAL_REGS being chosen. Anyway, with the improved CRIS register-class topology, the subset-checking code no longer has the GENERAL_REGS-demoting effect. To get the same quality, we have to adjust the port such that SPECIAL_REGS are specifically preferred when possible and advisible, i.e. when there's at least two of those registers as for the CPU variant with multiplication (which happens to be the variant maintained for performance). For the move-pattern, the obvious method may seem to simply "curse" the constraints of some alternatives (by prepending one of the "?!^$" characters) but that method can't be used, because we want the effect to be conditional on the CPU variant. It'd also be a shame to split the "*movsi_internal<setcc><setnz><setnzvc>" into two CPU-variants (with different cursing). Iterators would help, but it still seems unwieldy. Instead, add copies of the GENERAL_REGS variants (to the SPECIAL_REGS alternatives) on the "other" side, and make use of the "enabled" attribute to activate just the desired order of alternatives. gcc: * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_preferred_reload_class): Reject "eliminated" registers and small-enough constants unless reloaded into a class that is a subset of GENERAL_REGS. * config/cris/cris.md (attribute "cpu_variant"): New. (attribute "enabled"): Conditionalize on a matching attribute cpu_variant, if specified. ("*movsi_internal<setcc><setnz><setnzvc>"): For moves to and from memory, add cpu-variant-enabled variants for "r" alternatives on the far side of the "x" alternatives, preferring the "x" ones only for variants where MOF is present (in addition to SRP).
2022-02-02cris: Don't discriminate against ALL_REGS in TARGET_REGISTER_MOVE_COSTHans-Peter Nilsson1-14/+4
When the tightest class including both SPECIAL_REGS and GENERAL_REGS is ALL_REGS, artificially special-casing for *either* to or from, hits artificially hard. This gets the port back to the code quality before the previous patch ("cris: Remove CRIS v32 ACR artefacts") - except for_vfprintf_r and _vfiprintf_r in newlib (still .8 and .4% larger). gcc: * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_register_move_cost): Remove special pre-ira extra cost for ALL_REGS.
2022-02-02cris: Remove CRIS v32 ACR artefactsHans-Peter Nilsson4-27/+13
This is the change to which I alluded to this in r11-220 / d0780379c1b6 as "causes extra register moves in libgcc". It has unfortunate side-effects due to the change in register-class topology. There's a slight improvement in coremark numbers (< 0.07%) though also increase in code size total (< 0.7%) but looking at the individual changes in functions, it's all-over (-7..+7%). Looking specifically at functions that improved in speed, it's also both plus and minus in code sizes. It's unworkable to separate improvements from regressions for this case. I'll follow up with patches to restore the previous code quality, in both size and speed. gcc: * config/cris/constraints.md (define_register_constraint "b"): Now GENERAL_REGS. * config/cris/cris.md (CRIS_ACR_REGNUM): Remove. * config/cris/cris.h: (reg_class, REG_CLASS_NAMES) (REG_CLASS_CONTENTS): Remove ACR_REGS, SPEC_ACR_REGS, GENNONACR_REGS, and SPEC_GENNONACR_REGS. * config/cris/cris.cc (cris_preferred_reload_class): Don't mention ACR_REGS and return GENERAL_REGS instead of GENNONACR_REGS.
2022-02-02cris: For expanded movsi, don't match operands we know will be reloadedHans-Peter Nilsson1-3/+4
In a session investigating unexpected fallout from a change, I noticed reload needs one operand being a register to make an informed decision. It can happen that there's just a constant and a memory operand, as in: (insn 668 667 42 104 (parallel [ (set (mem:SI (plus:SI (reg/v/f:SI 347 [ fs ]) (const_int 168 [0xa8])) \ [1 fs_126(D)->regs.cfa_how+0 S4 A8]) (const_int 2 [0x2])) (clobber (reg:CC 19 dccr)) ]) "<...>/gcc/libgcc/unwind-dw2.c":1121:21 22 {*movsi_internal} (expr_list:REG_UNUSED (reg:CC 19 dccr) (nil))) This was helpfully created by combine. When this happens, reload can't check for costs and preferred register classes, (both operands will start with NO_REGS as the preferred class) and will default to the constraints order in the insn in reload. (Which also does its own temporary merge in find_reloads, but that's a different story.) Better don't match the simple cases. Beware that subregs have to be matched. I'm doing this just for word_mode (SI) for now, but may repeat this for the other valid modes as well. In particular, that goes for DImode as I see the expanded movdi does *almost* this, but uses register_operand instead of REG_S_P (from cris.h). Using REG_S_P is the right choice here because register_operand also matches (subreg (mem ...) ...) *until* reload is done. By itself it's just a sub-0.1% performance win (coremark). Also removing a stale comment. gcc: * config/cris/cris.md ("*movsi_internal<setcc><setnz><setnzvc>"): Conditionalize on (sub-)register operands or operand 1 being 0.

While the impact of the workaround is very marginal (coremark: less than .05% larger, less than .0005% slower) it's an irritating pseudorandom factor when assessing the impact of other changes. Noted by Richard Sandiford in https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=103974#c7 (thanks!) Mea culpa: I wrongly thought the default development-level value ("yes, extra") would include everything interesting to normal target hacking (i.e. as opposed to hacking stuff like GC). I see rtl-checking is marked as "expensive" and presumably therefore left out. Maybe it could be split into rtl-static (cheap; catching type errors including this kind of foulups) and rtl-dynamic (the expensive parts). I suppose that's for whomever feels a strong enough itch. A quick (error-prone) grep-and-eyeball in config/ shows this was the only file missing the parenthesis. This lets cris-elf configured with --enable-checking=yes,extra,rtl survive make all-gcc. 2022-01-11 Hans-Peter Nilsson <hp@axis.com> * config/cris/cris.c (cris_postdbr_cmpelim): Parenthesize parameter to as_a.

2021-03-11cris: define HARD_FRAME_POINTER_REGNUMHans-Peter Nilsson3-20/+36
Beware, tm.texi doesn't tell the whole story: a defined HARD_FRAME_POINTER_REGNUM (different to FRAME_POINTER_REGNUM) is supposed to make work easier for reload, being able to easily tell actual frame-pointer-related addresses from those that happen to use the same register or something to that effect. On reasonable code the performance effect is barely measurable. Looking at libgcc changes for -march=v10, the effect (where noticeable) is mostly indeterminate churn. Instances where it's not just insns moved around at no obvious effect: one more insn for addvdi3, subvdi3; two insns more in floatdisf; three insns shorter fixunsdfdi. Some of those seem related to pairing r8 with r9. The only effect on coremark is an infinitesimal positive effect from a three(!) cycles total (from the 15 calls) faster execution paths in vfprintf_r. Local microbenchmarks give similar results. With that in mind and not forgetting that expectations in the register allocator and reload leaning towards HARD_FRAME_POINTER_REGNUM defined (and different to) FRAME_POINTER_REGNUM or to wit, "all the kids do it", why not. Note that the offset at elimination really is 0. gcc: * config/cris/cris.h (HARD_FRAME_POINTER_REGNUM): Define. 2021-03-10cris: define DWARF_FRAME_REGISTERSHans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+3
When DWARF_FRAME_REGISTERS isn't defined, the default is FIRST_PSEUDO_REGISTER which means that if you add faked registers to the port, used for frame-context related elimination, room is allocated for them in the register context used for frame-unwinding, which is wasteful because they're eliminated before the final form of the code that is emitted. Stopping after MOF saves two register slots in the unwind contest, compared to the current default. For regular C programming this is uninteresting, but defining DWARF_FRAME_REGISTERS now also avoids the need to remember to define it later, when twiddling with additional faked registers (alternatively suffering churn from comparing differences in unwind context). As expected, no effect on test-results, coremark or local (C-specific) microbenchmarks. gcc: * config/cris/cris.h (DWARF_FRAME_REGISTERS): Define.
2021-03-06cris: don't define MAX_FIXED_MODE_SIZEHans-Peter Nilsson1-7/+0
It's been 32 ever since the CRIS port was committed. A TODO-item of mine has been to check whether the non-default setting of MAX_FIXED_MODE_SIZE makes sense wrt. performance and/or code-size with a modern gcc. It doesn't, so it goes. The setting is now the default, GET_MODE_BITSIZE (DImode) (defaults.h) i.e. 64. Measurements at r11-7500 (f3641ac70eb0) on coremark with "-O2 -march=v10 -mno-mul-bug-workaround" shows 0.04% performance improvement with this change, and by inspection the effect is that unused and/or unneeded stack-frames are eliminated more often in the floating-point library (not in the coremark main loop, thus the marginal improvement). The floating-point library is full of 64-bit unions used to pick apart floating point numbers, so this kind of makes sense. Inspection of a simulator trace shows that this is indeed the only effect in coremark. Other local micro-benchmarks agree as to the net effect (no traces were inspected though), and the most floating-point-heavy test shows an 8% improvement. These effects are of course subject to gcc core tweaks and may make sense to be adjusted again in a future release. While MAX_FIXED_MODE_SIZE is IMO supposed to be an optional macro for performance, setting it to anything smaller than twice the size of an address exposes bad decisions in gcc middle end, sometimes leading to internal compiler errors. (It being set to 32 should *not* affect use of DImode as an integer mode; it's for "integer machine modes of this size or smaller can be used for structures and unions with the appropriate sizes".) Thus, with the default 64 instead of 32, there are two tests that now pass for the first time: gcc.dg/attr-vector_size.c and gcc.dg/tree-ssa/pr93121-1.c. gcc: * config/cris/cris.h (MAX_FIXED_MODE_SIZE): Don't define.
2021-03-04Add input_modes parameter to TARGET_MD_ASM_ADJUST hookIlya Leoshkevich1-3/+4
If TARGET_MD_ASM_ADJUST changes a mode of an input operand (which should be ok as long as the hook itself as well as after_md_seq make up for it), input_mode will contain stale information. It might be tempting to fix this by removing input_mode altogether and just using GET_MODE (), but this will not work correctly with constants. So add input_modes parameter and document that it should be updated whenever inputs parameter is updated. gcc/ChangeLog: 2021-01-05 Ilya Leoshkevich <iii@linux.ibm.com> * cfgexpand.c (expand_asm_loc): Pass new parameter. 2021-02-24cris: support -fstack-usageHans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+5
All the bits were there, used with a pre-existing -mmax-stackframe=SIZE which unfortunately seems to lack test-cases. Note that the early-return for -mno-prologue-epilogue (what some targets call -mnaked) is deliberately not clearing current_function_static_stack_size, as I consider that erroneous usage but don't really care to emit a better error message. For stack-usage-1.c, like most ILP32 targets, CRIS (at -O0) needs 4 bytes for the return-address. The default size of 256 seems ill chosen but not worth fixing. gcc: * config/cris/cris.c (cris_expand_prologue): Set current_function_static_stack_size, if flag_stack_usage_info. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.dg/stack-usage-1.c: Adjust for CRIS.
2021-02-22cris: Fix addi insn mult vs. shift canonicalizationHans-Peter Nilsson2-12/+44
Ever since the canonicalization clean-up of (mult X (1 << N)) into (ashift X N) outside addresses, the CRIS addi patterns have been unmatched. No big deal. Unfortunately, nobody thought of adjusting reloaded addresses, so transforming mult into a shift has to be a kludged for when reload decides that it has to move an address like (plus (mult reg0 4) reg1) into a register, as happens building libgfortran. (No, simplify_rtx et al don't automatically DTRT.) Something less kludgy would make sense if it wasn't for the current late development stage and reload being deprecated. I don't know whether this issue is absent for LRA, though. I added a testsuite for the reload issue, despite being exposed by a libgfortran build, so the issue would be covered by C/C++ builds, but to the CRIS test-suite, not as a generic test, to avoid bad feelings from anyone preferring short test-times to redundant coverage. gcc: * config/cris/cris.c (cris_print_operand) <'T'>: Change valid operand from is now an addi mult-value to shift-value. * config/cris/cris.md (*addi): Change expression of scaled operand from mult to ashift. * config/cris/cris.md (*addi_reload): New insn_and_split. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/torture/sync-reload-mul-1.c: New test.

2020-07-13cris: Add new pass eliminating compares after delay-slot-fillingHans-Peter Nilsson4-0/+226
Delayed-branch-slot-filling a.k.a. reorg or dbr, often causes opportunities for more compare-elimination than were visible for the cmpelim pass. With cc0, these were caught by the elimination pass run in "final", thus the missed opportunities is a regression. A simple reorg-aware pass run just after reorg handles most of them, if not all. I chose to keep the "mach2" pass identifier string I copy-pasted from the SPARC port instead of inventing one like "postdbr_cmpelim". Note the gap in numbers in the test-case file names. gcc: PR target/93372 * config/cris/cris-passes.def: New file. * config/cris/t-cris (PASSES_EXTRA): Add cris-passes.def. * config/cris/cris.c: Add infrastructure bits and pass execute function cris_postdbr_cmpelim. * config/cris/cris-protos.h (make_pass_cris_postdbr_cmpelim): Declare. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/pr93372-44.c, gcc.target/cris/pr93372-46.c: New.
2020-07-13cris: Remove config/cris/t-cris gt-cris.h cargoHans-Peter Nilsson1-3/+0
Getting tired of: make[1]: Entering directory 'x/gccobj/gcc' Makefile:2682: warning: overriding recipe for target 'gt-cris.h' xx/gcc/gcc/config/cris/t-cris:29: warning: ignoring old recipe for target 'gt-cris.h' I'm just going to assume it is just stale cruft no longer (if ever) needed since nothing else but sh/t-sh has it, and the commit log shows just (x prepended to avoid commit-log parsing confusion): x Merge from pch-branch up to tag pch-commit-20020603. x x From-SVN: r54232 Building "works better"; the related warning is gone. This effectively empties the t-cris file, but stuff will be added soon enough that it's kept around. gcc: * config/cris/t-cris: Remove gt-cris.h-related excessive cargo.
2020-07-13cris: Use addi.b for additions where flags aren't inspectedHans-Peter Nilsson1-1/+39
Comparing to the cc0 version of the CRIS port, I ran a few microbenchmarks, for example gcc.c-torture/execute/arith-rand.c, where there's sometimes an addition between an operation of interest and the test on the result. Unfortunately this patch doesn't remedy all the performance regression for that program. But, this patch by itself helps and makes sense to commit separately: lots of addi.b in previously empty delay-slots, with functions shortened by one or a few insns, in libgcc. I had an experience with the reload-related caveat of % on constraints, which is "fixed" documentationwise since long (soon 15 years ago; be3914df4cc8/r105517). I removed an even older related FIXME. gcc: PR target/93372 * config/cris/cris.md ("*add<mode>3_addi"): New splitter. ("*addi_b_<mode>"): New pattern. ("*addsi3<setnz>"): Remove stale %-related comment. gcc/testsuite: PR target/93372 * gcc.target/cris/pr93372-45.c: New test.
