2020-07-13cris: Add new pass eliminating compares after delay-slot-fillingHans-Peter Nilsson4-0/+226
Delayed-branch-slot-filling a.k.a. reorg or dbr, often causes opportunities for more compare-elimination than were visible for the cmpelim pass. With cc0, these were caught by the elimination pass run in "final", thus the missed opportunities is a regression. A simple reorg-aware pass run just after reorg handles most of them, if not all. I chose to keep the "mach2" pass identifier string I copy-pasted from the SPARC port instead of inventing one like "postdbr_cmpelim". Note the gap in numbers in the test-case file names. gcc: PR target/93372 * config/cris/cris-passes.def: New file. * config/cris/t-cris (PASSES_EXTRA): Add cris-passes.def. * config/cris/cris.c: Add infrastructure bits and pass execute function cris_postdbr_cmpelim. * config/cris/cris-protos.h (make_pass_cris_postdbr_cmpelim): Declare. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/pr93372-44.c, gcc.target/cris/pr93372-46.c: New.

2020-07-13cris: Use addi.b for additions where flags aren't inspectedHans-Peter Nilsson1-1/+39
Comparing to the cc0 version of the CRIS port, I ran a few microbenchmarks, for example gcc.c-torture/execute/arith-rand.c, where there's sometimes an addition between an operation of interest and the test on the result. Unfortunately this patch doesn't remedy all the performance regression for that program. But, this patch by itself helps and makes sense to commit separately: lots of addi.b in previously empty delay-slots, with functions shortened by one or a few insns, in libgcc. I had an experience with the reload-related caveat of % on constraints, which is "fixed" documentationwise since long (soon 15 years ago; be3914df4cc8/r105517). I removed an even older related FIXME. gcc: PR target/93372 * config/cris/cris.md ("*add<mode>3_addi"): New splitter. ("*addi_b_<mode>"): New pattern. 2020-07-13cris: Correct output templates in define_subst patterns.Hans-Peter Nilsson1-3/+3
Whoops. This little gem had the effect of making the output operand (0) constraints disappear but not the input operand (1) constraints for define_subst:ed patterns, probably because there's another (match_dup 1) in the output template (not investigated). That went surprisingly unnoticed until I added a pass leaning just a little bit harder on the define_subst:ed patterns and then only by the libgfortran library generating assembly with nominally incorrect syntax. (There was a move to a special register from a general register, and it incorrectly matched a pattern affecting condition codes.) gcc: * config/cris/cris.md ("setnz_subst", "setnz_subst", "setcc_subst"): Use match_dup in output template, not match_operand.
2020-07-06cris: New peephole2 movulsr + test-case.Hans-Peter Nilsson1-4/+41
Combine likes to change a zero-extension / and + shift as seen in the test-case source to a logical shift followed by an and of the shifted mask, like: lsrq 1,r0 and.d 0x7f,r0 This was observed in the hot loop of coremark crcu16 and crcu32, when doing other changes affecting instruction selection. While fixable by other means (like instruction costs or combine patches), I wanted to break this out from those "other means". The similarity to extant peephole optimizations is not deliberate. I noticed some paths to other peephole2 test-cases have changed due to moves and renaming, so I updated them. gcc: * config/cris/cris.md (movulsr): New peephole2. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/peep2-movulsr.c: New test.
2020-07-06cris: Correct gcc_assert for atomic_fetch_op patternHans-Peter Nilsson1-1/+5
Yet another misnumbering of operands: the asserted non-overlap would be the only benign operands overlap. "Suddenly" exposed by g++.dg/cpp0x/pr81325.C when testing unrelated changes affecting register allocation. To wit, operands 2 and 1 are the only ones that are safe for overlap, it's only that it doesn't seem to make much sense to write the address of the atomic data as the atomic data. gcc: * config/cris/sync.md ("cris_atomic_fetch_<atomic_op_name><mode>_1"): Correct gcc_assert of overlapping operands.
2020-07-06cris: update recent patterns. Simplify cris_select_cc_mode.Hans-Peter Nilsson3-67/+71
The code in cris_select_cc_mode for selecting CC_NZmode was partly inconsistent with the comment and partly seemed ambiguous. I couldn't find a reason why I qualified selection of CC_NZmode on the setting operation once a matching user was spotted, so I just removed that. The cris.c update was due to observing the new test-case failing; the CC_NZmode compare wasn't eliminated. The recently re-instated adds/addu/subs/subu/bound patterns are rewritten to replace the use of match_operator with iterators. gcc: * config/cris/cris.c (cris_select_cc_mode): Always return CC_NZmode for matching comparisons. 2020-07-06cris.md: Reinstate add/sub with extendHans-Peter Nilsson1-0/+83
When cleaning out the multitude of patterns with unknown coverage, this one went the way of the bathwater. It's use is barely common enough to mark when diffing libgcc, and has a minimal impact on performance-testsuites. Anyway, reinstated with a couple of test-cases. It's suboptimal of gcc-core not to make use of the SImode pattern when performing HImode; see the FIXME (which is actually also reinstated). This version uses match_operator, for continuity but will be replaced with a version making use of iterators (like it does for the mode). gcc: * config/cris/cris.md ("*extopqihi", "*extop<mode>si<setnz>_swap") ("*extop<mode>si<setnz>", "*addxqihi_swap"): Reinstate. gcc/testsuite: * gcc.target/cris/pr93372-36.c, gcc.target/cris/pr93372-37.c, gcc.target/cris/pr93372-38.c: New tests.
2020-05-09cris: Enable "neg" to set condition codes.Hans-Peter Nilsson2-5/+5
While gcc seems to prefer transforming tests on the result of reversible operations, into tests on the original, it also can work with the destination, if allocated to the same register as it commonly-enough is. The re-use is easily covered in a test-case. (N.B.: the value 0x80000000 appears to be considered invalid and unimportant.) Spotted as a "microregression" in libgcc when comparing to the cc0 version. gcc: * config/cris/cris.c (cris_select_cc_mode): Return CC_NZmode for NEG too. 2020-05-09cris: Enable single-bit btst/btstq to set condition codes.Hans-Peter Nilsson3-20/+82
Enables the use of btst / btstq for a single bit (at other bits than 0, including as indicated by a variable) to set condition-codes. There's also a bug-fix for the bit-0-btstq pattern; it shouldn't generate CCmode as only the Z flag is valid, still using CC_NZmode is ok, as only equality-tests are generated. The cris_rtx_costs tweak is necessary or else combine will consider the btst not preferable. It reduces the difference to cc0-costs beyond the threshold to the transformation being seen as profitable, but there's still a difference in values for the pre-split-time btst+branch as opposed to the cc0 btst and branch, with both appearing to be the cost of several insns (18 and 22). gcc: * config/cris/cris-modes.def (CC_ZnN): New CC_MODE. * config/cris/cris.c (cris_rtx_costs): Handle pre-split bit-test * config/cris/cris.md (ZnNNZSET, ZnNNZUSE): New mode_iterators. Like with movsi_internal. Looks like the "cc" attribute didn't need tweaking for "movhi", but did for "movqi". N.B.: disabled alternatives make cause a later alternative to match. Also, non-anonymous insns get declarations and gen_* functions. We don't want that; even if it doesn't affect generated code it's sloppy. (This may or may not be preferable to the name decorations obfuscating standard pattern names.) 2020-05-09cris: Introduce CC_NZVCmode and CC_NZmode.Hans-Peter Nilsson5-72/+237
This is just the framework bits of splitting CCmode into classes where the cc-setter can merge mode (CCmode), classes where the cc-setter must set V and C "usefully" (as well as N and Z flags) and classes where the cc-setter is something like an arithmetic instruction, where N and Z are valid but C and V reflect the operation rather than a compare of the result with zero. This should yield identical or near-identical code. The old split of conditions into the ncond and ocond sets took into account the transformations done by final.c:alter_cond from cc_status.flags & CC_NO_OVERFLOW, and wasn't a reflection of the hardware description of the conditions (i.e. whether V mattered or not). gcc: Prepare for cmpelim pass to eliminate redundant compare insns. * config/cris/cris-modes.def: New file. * config/cris/cris-protos.h (cris_select_cc_mode): Declare. 2020-05-09cris: Move trivially from cc0 to reg:CC model, removing most optimizations.Hans-Peter Nilsson6-2570/+587
In the parlance of <https://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/CC0Transition>, this is a basic "type 2" conversion, without condition-code-related optimizations (just plain CCmode), but with "cstore{M}4" defined. CRIS is somewhat similar to the m68k; most instructions affect condition-codes. To wit, it lacks sufficient instructions to compose an arbitrary valid address in a register, specifically from a valid address where involved registers have to be spilled or adjusted, without affecting condition-codes in CRIS_CC0_REGNUM aka. dccr. On the other hand, moving dccr to and from a stackpointer-plus- constant-offset-address *can* be done without additional register use, and moving to or from a general register does not affect it. There's no instruction to add a constant to a register or to put a constant in a register, without affecting dccr, but there *is* an instruction to add a register (optionally scaled) to another without affecting dccr (i.e. "addi"). Also, moves *to* memory from any register do not affect dccr, and likewise between another special registers and a general register. Maybe some of that opens up the solution-space to a better solution than clobbering dccr until reload_completed; to be investigated. FAOD: I know what to do in the direction of defining and using additional CCmodes, but prefer to do the full transition in smaller steps. Regarding the similarity to m68k, I didn't follow the steps of the m68k cc0 transition, making use of the final_postscan_insn hook as with the a NOTICE_UPDATE_CC machinery. For one, because it seems to be lacking in that it keeps compare-elimination restricted to output-time, but also because it seems a bad match considering that CRIS has delay-slots; better try to eliminate compares earlier. Another approach which I originally intended to implement, that of the visium port of defining three variants for most insns (not counting the define_subst expansions; unaffecting-before-reload, clobbering and setting), seems overworked and bloating the machine description. I may be proven wrong, but I prefer we fix gcc if some something bails on seeing a parallel with a clobber of that specific hard-register. Also, I chose to remove most anonymous combination-matching patterns; matchers, splitters and peepholes instead of converting them to add clobbers of CRIS_CC0_REGNUM. There are exclusions: those covered in the test-suite, if trivial enough. Many of these patterns are used to handle the side-effect- assignment addressing-modes as put together by combine: a "prefix instruction" before the main instruction, where the main instruction uses the post-incremented-register addressing-mode and the "left-over" instruction-field in the prefixed insn to assign a register. An example: the hopefully descriptive "move.d $r9,[$r0=$r1+1234]" compared to "move.d $r9,[$r1+1234]"; both formed by the prefix insn "biap.w 1234,$r1" before respectively "move.d $r9,[$r0+]" and "move.d $r9,[$r0]". Other prefix variants exist. Useful, but optional, except where side-effect assignment was used in a special case in the function prologue; adjusted to a less optimal combination. Support like the function cris_side_effect_mode_ok is kept. I intend to put back as many as I find use for, of those anonymous patterns in a controlled manner, with self-contained test-cases proving their usability, rather than symmetry with other instructions and similar addressing modes, which guided the original introduction. I've entered pr93372 to track code performance regressions related to this transition, with focus on target-side causes and fixes; besides the function prologue special-case, there were some checking presence of the bit-test (btstq) instruction. The now-gone "tst<mode>" patterns deserve a comment too: they were an artefact from pre-"cbranch" era, now fully folded into the "cmp<mode>" patterns. I've left the now-unused "cc" insn attribute in, for the time being; to be removed, used or transformed to be useful with further work to fix pr93372. It can't be used as is, because "normal" doesn't mean "like a compare instruction" but "handled by NOTICE_UPDATE_CC" and may in fact be reflecting e.g. reverse operands, something that bit me during the conversion. gcc: Move trivially from cc0 to reg:CC model, removing most optimizations. * config/cris/cris.md: Remove all side-effect patterns and their splitters. 2020-05-09gcc/config/cris: Remove shared-library and CRIS v32 support.Hans-Peter Nilsson8-2278/+203
Part of the removal of crisv32-* and cris-*-linux* (cris-elf remains). Essentially everything is gone, including functions and target-specific definitions and most obvious knock-on effects, like removing unused functions and arguments. There's one exception: the register-class effects of the CRIS v32 ACR register are deliberately excluded and left in (i.e. its use by-number is removed and the ACE_REGS regclass is always unusable - but present). Changing register class definitions to remove ACR_REGS and related classes (folding their uses into remaining classes), causes extra register moves in libgcc (as an immediate observation; actual net effect unknown), which is unwanted both for performance reasons and also causing extra work comparing before/after cc0-machinery-conversion changes ahead. The actual cause and solution for these negative effects of cleaning up the register-classes will at the moment have to remain to-be-investigated. If CRIS v32 support is reinstated, consider doing the .md part not as separate patterns with opposite conditions but merged patterns with necessarily-different alternatives using the "enabled" attribute (which was not invented back then). Also, a single ACR-related RTL-dump example in a cris.md comment, related to a strict_low_part issue is kept, but marked as obsolete. Note that the "b" register-constraint (non-ACR registers; can be used for post-increment) is left in, as that may have extant uses outside of gcc. Its availability is tested by gcc.target/cris/asm-b-1.c. When ACR register classes are removed, it's probably best to make it equal to GENERAL_REGS. gcc: * config/cris: Remove shared-library and CRIS v32 support.

2020-02-10cris: try to generate zero-based comparisonsHans-Peter Nilsson3-2/+62
* config/cris/cris.c (cris_reduce_compare): New function. * config/cris/cris-protos.h (cris_reduce_compare): Add prototype. * config/cris/cris.md ("cbranch<mode>4", "cbranchdi4", "cstoredi4") (cstore<mode>4"): Apply cris_reduce_compare in expanders. The decc0ration work of the CRIS port made me look closer at the code for trivial comparisons, as in the condition for branches and conditional-stores, like in: void g(short int a, short int b) { short int c = a + b; if (c >= 0) foo (); } At -O2, the cc0 version of the CRIS port has an explicit *uneliminated* compare instruction ("cmp.w -1,$r10") instead of an (eliminated) compare against 0 (which below I'll call a zero-compare). This for the CRIS-cc0 version, but I see this also for a much older gcc, at 4.7. For the decc0rated port, the compare *is* a test against 0, eventually eliminated. To wit, for cc0 (mind the delay-slot): _g: subq 4,$sp add.w $r11,$r10 cmp.w -1,$r10 ble .L9 move $srp,[$sp] jsr _foo .L9: jump [$sp+] The compare instruction is expected to be eliminated, i.e. the following diff to the above is desired, modulo the missing sibling call, which corresponds to what I get from 4.7 and for the decc0rated port: !--- a Wed Feb 5 15:22:27 2020 !+++ b Wed Feb 5 15:22:51 2020 !@@ -1,8 +1,7 @@ ! _g: ! subq 4,$sp ! add.w $r11,$r10 !- cmp.w -1,$r10 !- ble .L9 !+ bmi .L9 ! move $srp,[$sp] ! ! jsr _foo Tracking this difference, I see that for both cc0-CRIS and the decc0rated CRIS, the comparison actually starts out as a compare against -1 at "expand" time, but is transformed for decc0rated CRIS to a zero-compare in "cse1". For CRIS-cc0 "cse1" does try to replace the compare with a zero-compare, but fails because at the same time it tries to replace the c operand with (a + b). Or some such; it fails and no other pass succeeds. I was not into fixing cc0-handling in core gcc, so I didn't look closer. BTW, at first, I was a bit surprised to see that for compares against a constant, a zero-compare is not canonical RTX for *all* conditions, and that instead only a subset of all RTX conditions against a constant are canonical, transforming one condition to the canonical one by adding 1 or -1 to the constant. It does makes sense at a closer look, but still not so much when emitting RTL. There are several places that mention in comments that emitting RTX as zero-compare is preferable, but nothing is done about it. Some generic code instead seems confused that the *target* is helped by seeing canonical RTX, or perhaps it (its authors) like me, confused about what a canonical comparison is. For example, prepare_cmp_insn calls canonicalize_comparison last before emitting the actual instructions. I see most ports for various port-specific reasons does their own massaging in their cbranch and cstore expanders. Still, the suboptimal compares *should* be fixed at expand time; better start out right than just relying on later optimizations. This kind of change is not acceptable in the current gcc development stage, at least as a change in generic code. However, it's problematic enough that I chose to fix this right now in the CRIS port. For that, I claim a possibly long-standing regression. After this, code before and after decc0ration is similar enough that I can spot compare-elimination-efforts and apply regression test-cases without them drowning in cc0-specific xfailing. I hope to eventually lift out cris_reduce_compare (renamed) into say expmed.c, called in e.g. emit_store_flag_1 (replacing the in-line code) and prepare_cmp_insn. Later.

Similarly to the call_used_or_fixed_regs patch, this one replaces tests of call_used_regs[i] with call_used_or_fixed_reg_p (i). The hook is passed the promoted mode instead of the original type mode. The expr.h reference in the documentation is no longer correct, but pointing to calls.h or calls.c doesn't help much either. 2019-08-20Use function_arg_info for TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG_ADVANCERichard Sandiford1-5/+5
There seems to be a bit of confusion around this one. Almost all callers pass the same arguments as TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG, meaning that the mode is the promoted mode rather than the type mode. But the calls.c handling for normal typed arguments instead passes the unpromoted TYPE_MODE (despite passing the promoted mode to TARGET_FUNCTION_ARG). I've kept this behaviour with a ??? comment. (The calls.c handling of libgcc functions does pass the promoted mode though, as does the function.c handling of incoming arguments.) Also, a couple of the arm callers don't seem to be using the hook correctly. Again I kept the current choices and added a ??? comment. 2019-08-20 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * target.def (function_arg_advance): Take a function_arg_info instead of a mode, type and named flag. * doc/tm.texi: Regenerate. * targhooks.h (default_function_arg_advance): Take a function_arg_info instead of a mode, type and named flag. * targhooks.c (default_function_arg_advance): Likewise. * calls.c (initialize_argument_information): Update call to targetm.calls.function_arg_advance. 2019-08-20Use function_arg_info for TARGET_ARG_PARTIAL_BYTESRichard Sandiford1-7/+6
This patch adds the function_arg_info class and uses it for TARGET_ARG_PARTIAL_BYTES. The hook is passed the promoted mode instead of the original type mode. The arguments aren't mentioned in the documentation, which is why the target.def change is so small. The patch changes "true" to "arg.named" in: gcc_assert (!epiphany_pass_by_reference (cum, mode, type, /* named */ true)); but epiphany_pass_by_reference doesn't care about the named flag. 2019-08-20 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@arm.com> gcc/ * target.def (arg_partial_bytes): Take a function_arg_info instead of a mode, type and named flag. * doc/tm.texi: Regenerate. * target.h (function_arg_info): Declare. * calls.h (function_arg_info): New class. * targhooks.h (hook_int_CUMULATIVE_ARGS_mode_tree_bool_0): Delete. 2017-10-23Convert STARTING_FRAME_OFFSET to a hookRichard Sandiford1-4/+0
I took the documentation of the FRAME_GROWS_DOWNWARD behaviour from the version that was in most header files, since the one in the manual seemed less clear. The patch deliberately keeps FIRST_PARM_OFFSET(FNDECL) in microblaze_starting_frame_offset; this seems to be a port-local convention and takes advantage of the fact that FIRST_PARM_OFFSET doesn't read FNDECL. 2017-10-23 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * target.def (starting_frame_offset): New hook. * doc/tm.texi (STARTING_FRAME_OFFSET): Remove in favor of... 2017-09-25Turn CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT into a hookRichard Sandiford2-11/+21
The definition: #define CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT(EXP, ALIGN) \ (TREE_CODE (EXP) == STRING_CST \ && (ALIGN) < BITS_PER_WORD ? BITS_PER_WORD : (ALIGN)) was very common, so the patch adds a canned definition for that, called constant_alignment_word_strings. Some ports had a variation that used a port-local FASTEST_ALIGNMENT instead of BITS_PER_WORD; the patch uses constant_alignment_word_strings if FASTEST_ALIGNMENT was always BITS_PER_WORD and a port-local hook function otherwise. 2017-09-25 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * target.def (constant_alignment): New hook. * defaults.h (CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT): Delete. * doc/tm.texi.in (CONSTANT_ALIGNMENT): Replace with...
