2018-08-20Add support for grouping of related diagnostics (PR other/84889)David Malcolm1-0/+1
We often emit logically-related groups of diagnostics. A relatively simple case is this: if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); where the "note" diagnostic issued by the "inform" call is guarded by the -Wmultistatement_macros warning. More complicated examples can be seen in the C++ frontend, where e.g. print_z_candidates can lead to numerous "note" diagnostics being emitted. I'm looking at various ways to improve how we handle such related diagnostics, but, prior to this patch, there was no explicit relationship between these diagnostics: the diagnostics subsystem had no way of "knowing" that these were related. This patch introduces a simple way to group the diagnostics: an auto_diagnostic_group class: all diagnostics emitted within the lifetime of an auto_diagnostic_group instance are logically grouped. Hence in the above example, the two diagnostics can be grouped by simply adding an auto_diagnostic_group instance: auto_diagnostic_group d; if (warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); Some more awkard cases are of the form: if (some_condition && warning_at (...) && more_conditions) inform (...); which thus need restructuring to: if (some_condition) { auto_diagnostic_group d; warning_at (...); if (more_conditions) inform (...); } so that the lifetime of the auto_diagnostic_group groups the warning_at and the inform call. Nesting is handled by simply tracking a nesting depth within the diagnostic_context.: all diagnostics are treated as grouped until the final auto_diagnostic_group is popped. diagnostic.c uses this internally, so that all diagnostics are part of a group - those that are "by themselves" are treated as being part of a group with one element. The diagnostic_context gains optional callbacks for displaying the start of a group (when the first diagnostic is emitted within it), and the end of a group (for when the group was non-empty); these callbacks are unused by default, but a test plugin demonstrates them (and verifies that the machinery is working). As noted above, I'm looking at various ways to use the grouping to improve how we output the diagnostics. FWIW, I experimented with a more involved implementation, of the form: diagnostic_group d; if (d.warning_at (body_loc, OPT_Wmultistatement_macros, "macro expands to multiple statements")) d.inform (guard_loc, "some parts of macro expansion are not guarded by " "this %qs clause", guard_tinfo_to_string (keyword)); which had the advantage of allowing auto-detection of the places where groups were needed (by converting ::warning_at's return type to bool), but it was a much more invasive patch, especially when dealing with the places in the C++ frontend that can emit numerous notes after an error or warning (and thus having to pass the group around) Hence I went with this simpler approach. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: PR other/84889 * c-attribs.c (common_handle_aligned_attribute): Add auto_diagnostic_group instance. * c-indentation.c (warn_for_misleading_indentation): Likewise. * c-opts.c (c_common_post_options): Likewise. * c-warn.c (warn_logical_not_parentheses): Likewise. 2018-01-03poly_int: load_register_parametersRichard Sandiford1-23/+37
This patch makes load_register_parameters cope with polynomial sizes. The requirement here is that any register parameters with non-constant sizes must either have a specific mode (e.g. a variable-length vector mode) or must be represented with a PARALLEL. This is in practice already a requirement for parameters passed in vector registers, since the default behaviour of splitting parameters into words doesn't make sense for them. 2018-01-03 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * calls.c (load_register_parameters): Cope with polynomial mode sizes. 2018-01-03poly_int: PUSH_ROUNDINGRichard Sandiford1-8/+6
PUSH_ROUNDING is difficult to convert to a hook since there is still a lot of conditional code based on it. It isn't clear that a direct conversion with checks for null hooks is the right thing to do. Rather than untangle that, this patch converts all implementations that do something to out-of-line functions that have the same interface as a hook would have. This should at least help towards any future hook conversion. 2018-01-03 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * config/cr16/cr16-protos.h (cr16_push_rounding): Declare. * config/cr16/cr16.h (PUSH_ROUNDING): Move implementation to... * config/cr16/cr16.c (cr16_push_rounding): ...this new function. * config/h8300/h8300-protos.h (h8300_push_rounding): Declare. * config/h8300/h8300.h (PUSH_ROUNDING): Move implementation to... * config/h8300/h8300.c (h8300_push_rounding): ...this new function. * config/i386/i386-protos.h (ix86_push_rounding): Declare. * config/i386/i386.h (PUSH_ROUNDING): Move implementation to... * config/i386/i386.c (ix86_push_rounding): ...this new function. * config/m32c/m32c-protos.h (m32c_push_rounding): Take and return a poly_int64. * config/m32c/m32c.c (m32c_push_rounding): Likewise. * config/m68k/m68k-protos.h (m68k_push_rounding): Declare. * config/m68k/m68k.h (PUSH_ROUNDING): Move implementation to... * config/m68k/m68k.c (m68k_push_rounding): ...this new function. * config/pdp11/pdp11-protos.h (pdp11_push_rounding): Declare. * config/pdp11/pdp11.h (PUSH_ROUNDING): Move implementation to... * config/pdp11/pdp11.c (pdp11_push_rounding): ...this new function. * config/stormy16/stormy16-protos.h (xstormy16_push_rounding): Declare. * config/stormy16/stormy16.h (PUSH_ROUNDING): Move implementation to... * config/stormy16/stormy16.c (xstormy16_push_rounding): ...this new function. * expr.c (emit_move_resolve_push): Treat the input and result of PUSH_ROUNDING as a poly_int64. 2017-12-20poly_int: SUBREG_BYTERichard Sandiford1-2/+2
This patch changes SUBREG_BYTE from an int to a poly_int. Since valid SUBREG_BYTEs must be contained within the mode of the SUBREG_REG, the required range is the same as for GET_MODE_SIZE, i.e. unsigned short. The patch therefore uses poly_uint16(_pod) for the SUBREG_BYTE. Using poly_uint16_pod rtx fields requires a new field code ('p'). Since there are no other uses of 'p' besides SUBREG_BYTE, the patch doesn't add an XPOLY or whatever; all uses should go via SUBREG_BYTE instead. The patch doesn't bother implementing 'p' support for legacy define_peepholes, since none of the remaining ones have subregs in their patterns. As it happened, the rtl documentation used SUBREG as an example of a code with mixed field types, accessed via XEXP (x, 0) and XINT (x, 1). Since there's no direct replacement for XINT, and since people should never use it even if there were, the patch changes the example to use INT_LIST instead. The patch also changes subreg-related helper functions so that they too take and return polynomial offsets. This makes the patch quite big, but it's mostly mechanical. The patch generally sticks to existing choices wrt signedness. 2017-12-20 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * doc/rtl.texi: Update documentation of SUBREG_BYTE. 2017-12-20Add a gen_int_shift_amount helper functionRichard Sandiford1-3/+5
This patch adds a helper routine that constructs rtxes for constant shift amounts, given the mode of the value being shifted. As well as helping with the SVE patches, this is one step towards allowing CONST_INTs to have a real mode. One long-standing problem has been to decide what the mode of a shift count should be for arbitrary rtxes (as opposed to those directly tied to a target pattern). Realistic choices would be the mode of the shifted elements, word_mode, QImode, a 64-bit mode, or the same mode as the shift optabs (in which case what should the mode be when the target doesn't have a pattern?) For now the patch picks a 64-bit mode, but with a ??? comment. 2017-12-20 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * emit-rtl.h (gen_int_shift_amount): Declare. * emit-rtl.c (gen_int_shift_amount): New function. * asan.c (asan_emit_stack_protection): Use gen_int_shift_amount instead of GEN_INT. * calls.c (shift_return_value): Likewise. * cse.c (fold_rtx): Likewise. * dse.c (find_shift_sequence): Likewise. * expmed.c (init_expmed_one_mode, store_bit_field_1, expand_shift_1) (expand_shift, expand_smod_pow2): Likewise. * lower-subreg.c (shift_cost): Likewise. * optabs.c (expand_superword_shift, expand_doubleword_mult) (expand_unop, expand_binop, shift_amt_for_vec_perm_mask) (expand_vec_perm_var): Likewise. * simplify-rtx.c (simplify_unary_operation_1): Likewise. 2017-10-10Require wi::to_wide for treesRichard Sandiford1-11/+9
The wide_int routines allow things like: wi::add (t, 1) to add 1 to an INTEGER_CST T in its native precision. But we also have: wi::to_offset (t) // Treat T as an offset_int wi::to_widest (t) // Treat T as a widest_int Recently we also gained: wi::to_wide (t, prec) // Treat T as a wide_int in preccision PREC This patch therefore requires: wi::to_wide (t) when operating on INTEGER_CSTs in their native precision. This is just as efficient, and makes it clearer that a deliberate choice is being made to treat the tree as a wide_int in its native precision. This also removes the inconsistency that a) INTEGER_CSTs in their native precision can be used without an accessor but must use wi:: functions instead of C++ operators b) the other forms need an explicit accessor but the result can be used with C++ operators. It also helps with SVE, where there's the additional possibility that the tree could be a runtime value. 2017-10-10 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * wide-int.h (wide_int_ref_storage): Make host_dependent_precision a template parameter. 2017-10-02Fix mismatched precisions in tree arithmeticRichard Sandiford1-3/+2
The tree wi:: decompose routine wasn't asserting that the requested precision matched the tree's precision. This could make a difference for unsigned trees that are exactly N HWIs wide and that have the upper bit set, since we then need an extra zero HWI when extending it to wider precisions (as for wi::to_widest). This patch adds the assert and fixes the fallout shown by the testsuite. Go seems to be unaffected. 2017-10-02 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * tree.h (wi::int_traits <const_tree>::decompose): Assert that the requested precision matches the type's. * calls.c (alloc_max_size): Calculate the new candidate size as a widest_int and use wi::to_widest when comparing it with the current candidate size. * gimple-ssa-warn-alloca.c (pass_walloca::execute): Compare with zero rather than integer_zero_node. * match.pd: Check for a no-op conversion before using wi::add rather than after. 2017-09-05Make more use of int_mode_for_sizeRichard Sandiford1-4/+5
This patch converts more places that could use int_mode_for_size instead of mode_for_size. This is in preparation for an upcoming patch that makes mode_for_size itself return an opt_mode. require () seems like the right choice in expand_builtin_powi because we have got past the point of backing out. We go on to do: op1 = expand_expr (arg1, NULL_RTX, mode2, EXPAND_NORMAL); if (GET_MODE (op1) != mode2) op1 = convert_to_mode (mode2, op1, 0); which would be invalid for (and have failed for) BLKmode. In get_builtin_sync_mode and expand_ifn_atomic_compare_exchange, the possible bitsizes are {8, 16, 32, 64, 128}, all of which give target-independent integer modes (up to TImode). The comment above the call in get_builtin_sync_mode makes clear that an integer mode must be found. We can use require () in expand_builtin_atomic_clear and expand_builtin_atomic_test_and_set because there's always an integer mode for the boolean type. The same goes for the POINTER_SIZE request in layout_type. Similarly we can use require () in combine_instructions and gen_lowpart_common because there's always an integer mode for HOST_BITS_PER_WIDE_INT (DImode when BITS_PER_UNIT == 8), and HOST_BITS_PER_DOUBLE_INT (TImode). The calls in aarch64_function_value, arm_function_value, aapcs_allocate_return_reg and mips_function_value_1 are handling cases in which a big-endian target passes or returns values at the most significant end of a register. In each case the ABI constrains the size to a small amount and does not handle non-power-of-2 sizes wider than a word. The calls in c6x_expand_movmem, i386.c:emit_memset, lm32_block_move_inline, microblaze_block_move_straight and mips_block_move_straight are dealing with expansions of block memory operations using register-wise operations, and those registers must have non-BLK mode. The reason for using require () in ix86_expand_sse_cmp, mips_expand_ins_as_unaligned_store, spu.c:adjust_operand and spu_emit_branch_and_set is that we go on to emit non-call instructions that use registers of that mode, which wouldn't be valid for BLKmode. 2017-09-05 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ * builtins.c (expand_builtin_powi): Use int_mode_for_size. 2017-09-04PR82045: Avoid passing machine modes through "..."Richard Sandiford1-55/+15
PR82045 is about a bootstrap failure on sparc-sun-solaris2.11. The problem was that we were passing the new machine_mode wrapper classes through "..." to emit_library_call(_value), which then read them back as ints instead. The simplest fix seemed to be replace "..." with an array of rtx_mode_ts, then provide wrappers for the common cases. This bulks out rtl.h a bit, but it does make things a bit more typesafe. 2017-09-04 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> gcc/ PR bootstrap/82045 * rtl.h (emit_library_call_value_1): Declare. 2017-08-30Add a partial_subreg_p predicateRichard Sandiford1-2/+1
This patch adds a partial_subreg_p predicate to go alongside paradoxical_subreg_p. Like the paradoxical_subreg_p patch, this one replaces some tests that were based on GET_MODE_SIZE rather than GET_MODE_PRECISION. In each case the change should be a no-op or an improvement. The regcprop.c patch prevents some replacements of the 82-bit RFmode with the 80-bit XFmode on ia64. I don't understand the target details here particularly well, but from the way the modes are described in ia64-modes.def, it isn't valid to assume that an XFmode can carry an RFmode payload. A comparison of the testsuite assembly output for one target per CPU showed no other differences. Some of the places changed here are tracking the widest access mode found for a register. The series tries to standardise on: if (partial_subreg_p (widest_seen, new_mode)) widest_seen = new_mode; rather than: if (paradoxical_subreg_p (new_mode, widest_seen)) widest_seen = new_mode; Either would have been OK. 2017-08-30 Richard Sandiford <richard.sandiford@linaro.org> Alan Hayward <alan.hayward@arm.com> David Sherwood <david.sherwood@arm.com> gcc/ * rtl.h (partial_subreg_p): New function. * caller-save.c (save_call_clobbered_regs): Use it. * calls.c (expand_call): Likewise. * combine.c (combinable_i3pat): Likewise.
