Continuing the removal of 'current_program_space->core_bfd ()' from
GDB, this commit updates two gdbarch methods:
gdbarch_core_xfer_shared_libraries
gdbarch_core_xfer_shared_libraries_aix
to take the core file BFD as a reference parameter. For now this just
moves the 'current_program_space->core_bfd ()' calls up the program
stack into core_target::xfer_partial. In the future I plan to move
the core file BFD object out of the program_space and into the
core_target, at which point these new global accesses can also be
removed.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

solib_ops
Change the "iterate over objfiles in search order" operation from a
gdbarch method to methods on both program_space and solib_ops.
The first motivation for this is that I want to encapsulate solib-svr4's
data into svr4_solib_ops (in a subsequent series), instead of it being
in a separate structure (svr4_info). It is awkward to do so as long as
there are entry points that aren't the public solib_ops interface.
The second motivation is my project of making it able to have multiple
solib_ops per program space (which should be the subject of said
subsequent series), to better support heterogenousa systems (like ROCm,
with CPU and GPU in the same inferior). When we have this, when stopped
in GPU code, it won't make sense to ask the host's architecture to do
the iteration, as the logic could be different for the GPU architecture.
Instead, program_space::iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order will be
responsible to delegate to the various solib_ops using a logic that is
yet to be determined.
I included this patch in this series (rather than the following one)
so that svr4_solib_ops::iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order can access
svr4_solib_ops::default_debug_base, introduced in a later patch in this
series.
default_iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order becomes the default
implementation of solib_ops::iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order.
As far as I know, all architectures using
svr4_iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order also use solib_ops_svr4, so I
don't expect this patch to cause behavior changes.

In some subsequent patches, solib_ops methods will need to access the
program space they were created for. We currently access the program
space using "current_program_space", but it would better to remember the
program space at construction time instead.

Convert solib_ops into an abstract base class (with abstract methods,
some of them with default implementations) and convert all the existing
solib_ops instances to solib_ops derived classes / implementations.
Prior to this patch, solib_ops is a structure holding function pointers,
of which there are only a handful of global instances (in the
`solib-*.c` files). When passing an `solib_ops *` around, it's a
pointer to one of these instances. After this patch, there are no more
global solib_ops instances. Instances are created as needed and stored
in struct program_space. These instances could eventually be made to
contain the program space-specific data, which is currently kept in
per-program space registries (I have some pending patches for that).
Prior to this patch, `gdbarch_so_ops` is a gdbarch method that returns a
pointer to the appropriate solib_ops implementation for the gdbarch.
This is replaced with the `gdbarch_make_solib_ops` method, which returns
a new instance of the appropriate solib_ops implementation for this
gdbarch. This requires introducing some factory functions for the
various solib_ops implementation, to be used as `gdbarch_make_solib_ops`
callbacks. For instance:

The previous code is full of cases of tdep files copying some base
solib_ops implementation, and overriding one or more function pointer
(see ppc_linux_init_abi, for instance). I tried to convert all of this
is a class hierarchy. I like that it's now possible to get a good
static view of all the existing solib_ops variants. The hierarchy looks

The solib-svr4 code has per-arch specialization to provide a
link_map_offsets, containing the offsets of the interesting fields in
`struct link_map` on that particular architecture. Prior to this patch,
arches would set a callback returning the appropriate link_map_offsets
by calling `set_solib_svr4_fetch_link_map_offsets`, which also happened
to set the gdbarch's so_ops to `&svr_so_ops`. I converted this to an
abstract virtual method of `struct svr4_solib_ops`, meaning that all
classes deriving from svr4_solib_ops must provide a method returning the
appropriate link_map_offsets for the architecture. I renamed
`set_solib_svr4_fetch_link_map_offsets` to `set_solib_svr4_ops`. This
function is still necessary because it also calls
set_gdbarch_iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order, but if it was not for
that, we could get rid of it.
There is an instance of CRTP in mips-linux-tdep.c, because both
mips_linux_ilp32_svr4_solib_ops and mips_linux_lp64_svr4_solib_ops need
to derive from different SVR4 base classes (linux_ilp32_svr4_solib_ops
and linux_lp64_svr4_solib_ops), but they both want to override the
in_dynsym_resolve_code method with the same implementation.
The solib_ops::supports_namespaces method is new: the support for
namespaces was previously predicated by the presence or absence of a
find_solib_ns method. It now needs to be explicit.
There is a new progspace::release_solib_ops method, which is only needed
for rocm_solib_ops. For the moment, rocm_solib_ops replaces and wraps
the existing svr4_solib_ops instance, in order to combine the results of
the two. The plan is to have a subsequent patch to allow program spaces to have
multiple solib_ops, removing the need for release_solib_ops.
Speaking of rocm_solib_ops: it previously overrode only a few methods by
copying svr4_solib_ops and overwriting some function pointers. Now, it
needs to implement all the methods that svr4_solib_ops implements, in
order to forward the call. Otherwise, the default solib_ops method
would be called, hiding the svr4_solib_ops implementation. Again, this
can be removed once we have support for multiple solib_ops in a
program_space.
There is also a small change in how rocm_solib_ops is activated. Prior
to this patch, it's done at the end of rocm_update_solib_list. Since it
overrides the function pointer in the static svr4_solib_ops, and then
overwrites the host gdbarch, so_ops field, it's something that happens
only once. After the patch though, we need to set rocm_solib_ops in all
the program spaces that appear. We do this in
rocm_solib_target_inferior_created and in the new
rocm_solib_target_inferior_execd. After this, I will explore doing a
change where rocm_solib_ops is only set when we detect the ROCm runtime
is loaded.

This patch introduces a new macro, INIT_GDB_FILE. This is used to
replace the current "_initialize_" idiom when introducing a per-file
initialization function. That is, rather than write:
void _initialize_something ();
void
_initialize_something ()
{
...
}
... now you would write:
INIT_GDB_FILE (something)
{
...
}
The macro handles both the declaration and definition of the function.
The point of this approach is that it makes it harder to accidentally
cause an initializer to be omitted; see commit 2711e475 ("Ensure
cooked_index_entry self-tests are run"). Specifically, the regexp now
used by make-init-c seems harder to trick.
New in v2: un-did some erroneous changes made by the script.
The bulk of this patch was written by script.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 41.

I don't think that the file solist.h is useful. It would make sense to
have `struct solib` in solib.h. And then, all that would remain is
`struct solib_ops` and some solib-related function declarations. So,
move it all to solib.h.

I noticed a non-bool-like use of target_get_tib_address in
windows-tdep.c. After fixing this I thought it would be good to
document the target method; and this also lead to some non-bool-like
commentary in remote.c. This patch fixes all of these nits.

Frame unwinders have historically been a structure populated with
callback pointers, so that architectures (or other specific unwinders)
could install their own way to handle the inferior. However, since
moving to C++, we could use polymorphism to get the same functionality
in a more readable way. Polymorphism also makes it simpler to add new
functionality to all frame unwinders, since all that's required is
adding it to the base class.
As part of the changes to add support to disabling frame unwinders,
this commit makes the first baby step in using polymorphism for the
frame unwinders, by making frame_unwind a virtual class, and adds a
couple of new classes. The main class added is frame_unwind_legacy,
which works the same as the previous structs, using function pointers
as callbacks. This class was added to allow the transition to happen
piecemeal. New unwinders should instead follow the lead of the other
classes implemented.
2 of the others, frame_unwind_python and frame_unwind_trampoline, were added
because it seemed simpler at the moment to do that instead of reworking
the dynamic allocation to work with the legacy class, and can be used as
an example to future implementations.
Finally, the cygwin unwinder was converted to a class since it was most
of the way there already.

Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things
actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make
things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through
the 170 or so files by hand.

Move the declarations out of defs.h, and the implementations out of
findvar.c.
I opted for a new file, because this functionality of converting
integers to bytes and vice-versa seems a bit to generic to live in
findvar.c.

Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

The majority of functions in the cygwin DLL are wrapped by routines
which use an an alternate stack to return via a signal handler if a
signal occured while inside the function. (See [1],[2])
At present, these frames cannot be correctly unwound by gdb. There
doesn't seem to currently be a way to correctly describe these frames
using DWARF CFI.
So instead, write a custom unwinder for _sigbe and sigdelayed frames,
which gets the return address from the alternate stack.
The offset of tls::stackptr from TIB.stacktop is determined by analyzing
the code in _sigbe or sigdelayed.
This can backtrace from _sigbe and from a sighandler through sigdelayed.
Implemented for amd64 and i386
Issues:
1. We should detect if we are in the wrapper after the return address
has been popped off the alternate stack, and if so, fetch the return
address from the register it's been popped into.
2. If there are multiple _sigbe or sigdelayed stack frames to be
unwound, this only unwinds the first one correctly, because we don't
unwind the value of the alternate stack pointer itself.
This is no worse than currently, when we can't even unwind one of
these frame correctly, but isn't quite correct.
I guess this could be handled by defining a pseudo-register to track
its value as we unwind the stack.

The core_bfd macro hides a use of current_program_space. Remove it, so
that we have the opportunity to get the program space from the context,
if possible. I guess that the macro was introduced at some point to
replace a global variable of the same name without changing all the
uses.

I don't like the name `target_so_ops`, because:
- The name `target` is so overloaded, and in this case it's not even
related to target_ops or anything else called "target".
- We do have an implementation that actually fetches solibs from the
target (solib_target_so_op in solib-target.c), so it's confusing for
the "base class" to be called target_something as well.
Rename to solib_ops.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

C++17 makes the second parameter to static_assert optional, so we can
remove gdb_static_assert now.

Remove uses of obstack in the code generating the libraries XML for
Windows and AIX. Use std::string instead. I'm not able to test this
change, unfortunately.

This function is just a wrapper around the current inferior's gdbarch.
I find that having that wrapper just obscures where the arch is coming
from, and that it's often used as "I don't know which arch to use so
I'll use this magical target_gdbarch function that gets me an arch" when
the arch should in fact come from something in the context (a thread,
objfile, symbol, etc). I think that removing it and inlining
`current_inferior ()->arch ()` everywhere will make it a bit clearer
where that arch comes from and will trigger people into reflecting
whether this is the right place to get the arch or not.

After finding this code in buildsym_compunit::finish_block_internal:

and fixing PR30810 by using TYPE_ZALLOC, I wondered if there were more
locations that needed fixing.
I decided to make things easier to spot by factoring out a new function
alloc_fields:

- a regular use would be "alloc_fields (nfields)", and
- an exceptional use that needed no initialization would be

Pretty soon I discovered that most of the latter cases are due to
initialization by memcpy, so I added two variants of copy_fields as well.
After this rewrite there are 8 uses of set_fields left:

Add the `target_type` and `set_target_type` methods on `struct type`, in order
to remove the `TYPE_TARGET_TYPE` macro. In this patch, the macro is changed to
use the getter, so all the call sites of the macro that are used as a setter
are changed to use the setter method directly. The next patch will remove the
macro completely.

This changs solib_ops to be an ordinary gdbarch value and updates all
the uses. This removes a longstanding FIXME and makes the code
somewhat cleaner as well.

Like commit b82817674f, this replaces BFD_VMA_FMT "x" in sim/ with
PRIx64 and casts to promote bfd_vma to uint64_t. The one file using
BFD_VMA_FMT in gdb/ instead now uses hex_string, and a typo in the
warning message is fixed.

gdbarch implements its own registry-like approach. This patch changes
it to instead use registry.h. It's a rather large patch but largely
uninteresting -- it's mostly a straightforward conversion from the old
approach to the new one.
The main benefit of this change is that it introduces type safety to
the gdbarch registry. It also removes a bunch of code.
One possible drawback is that, previously, the gdbarch registry
differentiated between pre- and post-initialization setup. This
doesn't seem very important to me, though.

gdbarch_iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order callback
A rather straightforward patch to change an instance of callback +
void pointer to gdb::function_view, allowing pasing lambdas that
capture, and eliminating the need for the untyped pointer.

Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we
can unify the printf family of functions. This is done under the name
"gdb_printf". Most of this patch was written by script.

No kind of internal var uses it remove it. This makes the transition to
using a variant easier, since we don't need to think about where this
should be called (in a destructor or not), if it can throw, etc.

This moves the gdb-specific obstack code -- both extensions like
obconcat and obstack_strdup, and things like auto_obstack -- to
gdbsupport.

windows-tdep.c checks the result of xmalloc, which isn't necessary. I
initially removed this dead check, but then went a bit further and
modified the code so that some "goto"s and explicit memory management
could be removed. Then, I added a couple of missing bounds checks.
I believe this also fixes a possible bug with a missing 0-termination
of a string. I am not certain, but that is why I think the existing
code allocates a buffer that is 1 byte too long -- but then it fails
to set this byte to 0.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

The bug fixed by this [1] patch was caused by an out-of-bounds access to
a value's content. The code gets the value's content (just a pointer)
and then indexes it with a non-sensical index.
This made me think of changing functions that return value contents to
return array_views instead of a plain pointer. This has the advantage
that when GDB is built with _GLIBCXX_DEBUG, accesses to the array_view
are checked, making bugs more apparent / easier to find.
This patch changes the return types of these functions, and updates
callers to call .data() on the result, meaning it's not changing
anything in practice. Additional work will be needed (which can be done
little by little) to make callers propagate the use of array_view and
reap the benefits.

Add accessors for the various location values in struct field. This
lets us assert that when we get a location value of a certain kind (say,
bitpos), the field's location indeed contains a value of that kind.
Remove the SET_FIELD_* macros, instead use the new setters directly.
Update the FIELD_* macros used to access field locations to go through
the getters. They will be removed in a subsequent patch.
There are places where the FIELD_* macros are used on call_site_target
structures, because it contains members of the same name (loc_kind and
loc). For now, I have replicated the getters/setters in
call_site_target. But we could perhaps eventually factor them in a
"location" structure that can be used at both places.
Note that the field structure, being zero-initialized, defaults to a
bitpos location with value 0. While writing this patch, I tried to make
it default to an "unset" location, to catch places where we would miss
setting a field's location. However, I found that some places relied on
the default being "bitpos 0", so I left it as-is. This change could
always be done as follow-up work, making these places explicitly set the
"bitpos 0" location.
I found two issues to fix:
- I got some failures in the gdb.base/infcall-nested-structs-c++.exp
test. They were caused by two functions in amd64-tdep.c using
TYPE_FIELD_BITPOS before checking if the location is of the bitpos
kind, which they do indirectly through `field_is_static`. Simply
move getting the bitpos below the field_is_static call.
- I got a failure in gdb.xml/tdesc-regs.exp. It turns out that in
make_gdb_type_enum, we set enum field values using SET_FIELD_BITPOS,
and later access them through FIELD_ENUMVAL. Fix that by using
set_loc_enumval to set the value.

Add the `name` and `set_name` methods on `struct field`, in order to
remove `FIELD_NAME` and `TYPE_FIELD_NAME` macros. In this patch, the
macros are changed to use `field::name`, so all the call sites that are
used to set the field's name are changed to use `field::set_name`.
The next patch will remove the macros completely.
Note that because of the name clash between the existing field named
`name` and the new method, I renamed the field `m_name`. It is not
private per-se, because we can't make `struct field` a non-POD yet, but
it should be considered private anyway (not accessed outside `struct
field`).

There are a few includes of complaints.h that aren't necessary. This
patch removes them. Tested by rebuilding.

I wrote a small script to spot a pattern of indentation mistakes I saw
happened in breakpoint.c. And while at it I ran it on all files and
fixed what I found. No behavior changes intended, just indentation and
addition / removal of curly braces.

Same idea as previous patch, but for add_alias_cmd. Remove the overload
that accepts the target command as a string (the target command name),
leaving only the one that takes the cmd_list_element.

Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.
Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit
3f4d92ebdf7f848b5ccc9e8d8e8514c64fde1183 by Philippe Waroquiers, so
we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix
name.
This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario:
* A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class).
The prefix name member is dynamically allocated.
* An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set
to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct
assignment.
* A new command with the same name as the Python command is created.
* The object for the original Python command gets freed and its
prefixname gets freed as well.
* The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname
is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one.

The current_top_target function is a hidden dependency on the current
inferior. Since I'd like to slowly move towards reducing our dependency
on the global current state, remove this function and make callers use
current_inferior ()->top_target ()
There is no expected change in behavior, but this one step towards
making those callers use the inferior from their context, rather than
refer to the global current inferior.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).
