This updates the copyright headers to include 2025. I did this by
running gdb/copyright.py and then manually modifying a few files as
noted by the script.

Intel has EOL'ed the Nios II architecture, and it's time to remove support
from all toolchain components before it gets any more bit-rotten from
lack of maintenance or regular testing.

Problem Description
-------------------
On a Windows machine I built gdbserver, configured for the target
'x86_64-w64-mingw32', then on a GNU/Linux machine I built GDB with
support for all target (--enable-targets=all).
On the Windows machine I start gdbserver with a small test binary:
$ gdbserver 192.168.129.25:54321 C:\some\directory\executable.exe
On the GNU/Linux machine I start GDB without the test binary, and
connect to gdbserver.
As I have not given GDB the test binary, my expectation is that GDB
would connect to gdbserver and then download the file over the remote
protocol, but instead I was presented with this message:

What I found is that if I told GDB where to find the binary, like
this:
(gdb) file target:C:/some/directory/executable.exe
A program is being debugged already.

then GDB would download the executable.
The Actual Issue
----------------
I tracked the problem down to exec_file_find (solib.c). The remote
target was passing an absolute Windows filename (beginning with "C:/"
in this case), but in exec_file_find GDB was failing the
IS_TARGET_ABSOLUTE_PATH call, and so was treating the filename as
relative.
The IS_TARGET_ABSOLUTE_PATH call was failing because GDB thought that
the file system kind was "unix", and as the filename didn't start with
a "/" it assumed the filename was not absolute.
But I'm connecting to a Windows target and 'target-file-system-kind'
was set to "auto", so GDB should be figuring out that the target
file-system is "dos-based".
Looking in effective_target_file_system_kind (filesystem.c), we find
that the logic of "auto" is delegated to the current gdbarch. However
in windows-tdep.c we see:
set_gdbarch_has_dos_based_file_system (gdbarch, 1);
So if we are using a Windows gdbarch we should have "dos-based"
filesystems. What this means is that after connecting to the remote
target GDB has selected the wrong gdbarch.
What's happening is that the target description sent back by the
remote target only includes the x86-64 registers. There's no
information about which OS we're on. As a consequence, GDB picks the
first x86-64 gdbarch which can handle the provided register set, which
happens to be a GNU/Linux gdbarch.
And indeed, there doesn't appear to be anywhere in gdbserver that sets
the osabi on the target descriptions. Some target descriptions do have
their osabi set when the description is created, e.g. in:
gdb/arch/amd64.c - Sets GNU/Linux osabi when appropriate.
gdb/arch/i386.c - Likewise.
gdb/arch/tic6x.c - Always set GNU/Linux osabi.
There are also some cases in gdb/features/*.c where the tdesc is set,
but these locations are only called from GDB, not from gdbserver.
This means that many target descriptions are created without an osabi,
gdbserver does nothing to fix this, and the description is returned to
GDB without an osabi included. This leaves GDB having to guess what
the target osabi is, and in some cases, GDB can get this wrong.
Proposed Solution
-----------------
I propose to change init_target_desc so that it requires an gdb_osabi
to be passed in, this will then be used to set the target_desc osabi
field.
I believe that within gdbserver init_target_desc is called for every
target_desc, so this should mean that every target_desc has an
opportunity to set the osabi to something sane.
I did consider passing the osabi into the code which creates the
target_desc objects, but that would require updating far more code, as
each target has its own code for creating target descriptions.
The approach taken here requires minimal changes and forces every
user of init_target_desc to think about what the correct osabi is.
In some cases, e.g. amd64, where the osabi is already set when the
target_desc is created, the init_target_desc call will override the
current value, however, we should always be replacing it with the same
actual value. i.e. if the target_desc is created with the osabi set
to GNU/Linux, then this should only happen when gdbserver is built for
GNU/Linux, in which case the init_target_desc should also be setting
the osabi to GNU/Linux.
The Tricky Bits
---------------
Some targets, like amd64, use a features based approach for creating
target_desc objects, there's a function in arch/amd64.c which creates
a target_desc, adds features too it, and returns the new target_desc.
This target_desc is then passed to an init_target_desc call within
gdbserver. This is the easy case to handle.
Then there are other targets which instead have a fixed set of xml
files, each of which is converted into a .dat file, which is then used
to generate a .cc file, which is compiled into gdbserver. The
generated .cc file creates the target_desc object and calls
init_target_desc on it. In this case though the target description
that is sent to GDB isn't generated from the target_desc object, but
is instead the contents of the fixed xml file. For this case the
osabi which we pass to init_target_desc should match the osabi that
exists in the fixed xml file.
Luckily, in the previous commit I copied the osabi information from
the fixed xml files into the .dat files. So in this commit I have
extended regdat.sh to read the osabi from the .dat file and use it in
the generated init_target_desc call.
The problem with some of these .dat base targets is that their fixed
xml files don't currently contain any osabi information, and the file
names don't indicate that they are Linux only (despite them currently
only being used from gdbserver for Linux targets), so I don't
currently feel confident adding any osabi information to these files.
An example would be features/rs6000/powerpc-64.xml. For now I've just
ignored these cases. The init_target_desc will use GDB_OSABI_UNKNOWN
which is the default. This means that for these targets nothing
changes from the current behaviour. But many other targets do now
pass the osabi back. Targets that do pass the osabi back are
improved with this commit.
Conclusion
----------
Now when I connect to the Windows remote the target description
returned includes the osabi name. With this extra information GDB
selects the correct gdbarch object, which means that GDB understands
the target has a "dos-based" file-system. With that correct GDB
understands that the filename it was given is absolute, and so fetches
the file from the remote as we'd like.

Some gdbserver targets generate their target description based on the
gdb/regformats/*.dat files. These .dat files are generated from a
matching xml file in gdb/features/.
Lets consider a concrete example:
Take gdb/features/or1k-linux.xml, this file is processed by
gdb/features/Makefile to create gdb/regformats/or1k-linux.dat.
When gdbserver is built for the or1k target the file
or1k-linux-generated.cc is generated using the
gdb/regformats/regdat.sh script. This .cc file is then compiled and
linked into gdbserver.
The or1k-linux-generated.cc file contains the function
init_registers_or1k_linux which is called from within gdbserver, this
function creates a target_desc object and sets its xmltarget field to
a fixed string. This fixed string is the xml filename that was
originally used to generate the xml file, in this case or1k-linux.xml.
Additionally, as part of the gdbserver build the file or1k-linux.xml
is converted to a string and placed in the file
xml-builtin-generated.cc which is then built into gdbserver.
Now when GDB asks gdbserver for the target description, gdbserver
returns the fixed xmltarget string, which is the name of an xml file.
GDB will then ask gdbserver for that file and gdbserver will return
the contents of that file thanks to the xml-builtin-generated.cc
file's contents.
This is all rather complicated, but it does work. So what's the
problem that I'm fixing?
Well or1k-linux.xml does contain the osabi information, so this will
be returned from gdbserver to GDB. That's good.
However, the target_desc object created in init_registers_or1k_linux
will not have its osabi set correctly.
Now this doesn't really matter too much except
init_registers_or1k_linux includes a call to init_target_desc.
In the next commit I want to extend init_target_desc to require an
osabi to be passed in. The motivation for this will be explained in
the next commit, but if we accept for a moment that this is something
that should be done, then the question is what osabi should we use in
init_registers_or1k_linux?
Ideally we'd use the osabi which is set in or1k-linux.xml. If we do
that then everything will remain consistent, which is a good thing.
And so, to get the osabi from or1k-linux.xml into
init_registers_or1k_linux, we first need to get the osabi information
into or1k-linux.dat file, and this is what this commit does.
I've added a new xsl script print-osabi.xsl and updated
gdb/features/Makefile to make use of this script. Then I regenerated
all of the .dat files. Now every .dat file contains either:
osabi:GNU/Linux
osabi:unknown
The first is for xml files containing <osabi>GNU/Linux</osabi> and the
second is for xml files that don't contain an osabi element.
This commit doesn't attempt to make use of the osabi information in
the .dat files, that will come in the next commit. There should be no
user visible changes after this commit.

Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

This patch adds gdbserver support for OpenRISC. This has been used for
debugging the glibc port that in being worked on here:
https://github.com/openrisc/or1k-glibc/tree/or1k-port-2
Hence the comment about registers definitions being inline with glibc.

Clean up some things I noticed:
- we generate a regformats/microblaze-with-stack-protect.dat file. I
don't think this is used. It could be used by a GDBserver built for
Microblaze, but GDBserver isn't ported to Microblaze. So I don't
think that's used at all. Remove the entry in features/Makefile and
the file itself.
- There are a bunch of *-expedite values in features/Makefile for
architectures for which we don't generate dat files. AFAIK, these
*-expedite values are only used when generating dat files. Remove
those that are not necessary.
- 32bit-segments.xml is not listed in the Makfile, but it's used. This
means that it wouldn't get re-generated if we were to change how C
files are generated from the XML. It looks like it was simply
forgotten, add it.

I believe that the .dat files starting with `reg-` are the manually
written ones, the other being generated from xml files from the features
directory.
This patch removes the manually-written files that are no longer needed.
They are unused since the recent series that removed a bunch of
gdbserver ports.

This patch removes the leftover regformats .dat files for the arm
architecture. There are no longer relevant, since the arm architecture
has been converted to use feature-based target-descriptions. These .dat
files are used by GDBserver ports that still use static target
descriptions.
These .dat files are generated from corresponding .xml files in the
features directory. And since the corresponding .xml files for these
arm .dat files don't exist anymore, it is impossible to re-generated
them. If you delete these .dat files and type "make" in the features
directory, you'll get:
make: *** No rule to make target '../regformats/arm/arm-with-iwmmxt.dat', needed by 'all'. Stop.
So it removes the entries in the `WHICH` variable of
gdb/features/Makefile.
Finally, it removes the rule in gdbserver/Makefile to generate .cc files
from `../gdb/regformats/arm/%.dat`.

When compiling gdbserver for an architecture that uses the regdat.sh
script (such as m68k) and the -Wmissing-declarations compiler flag, I
get:

The same happens with other architectures, such as s390, but I'll be
using 68k as an example.
The init_registers_m68k function is defined in reg-m68k-generated.c,
which is produced by the regformats/regdat.sh script. This script reads
the regformats/reg-m68k.dat file, containing a register description, and
produces C code that creates a corresponding target description at
runtime.
The init_registers_m68k function is invoked at initialization time in
linux-m68k-low.c. The function must therefore be non-static, but does
not have a declaration at the moment.
The real clean way of fixing this would be to make regdat.sh generate a
.h file (in addition to the .c file) with declarations for whatever is
in the .c file. The generated .c file would include the .h file, and
therefore the definition would have a corresponding declaration. The
linux-m68k-low.c file would also include this .h file, instead of having
its own declaration of init_registers_m68k, like it does now.
However, this would be a quite big change for not much gain. As far as
I understand, some common architectures (i386, x86-64, ARM, AArch64)
have been moved to dynamically building target descriptions based on
features (the linux-*-tdesc.c files in gdbserver) and don't use
regdat.sh anymore. Logically (and given infinite development
resources), the other architectures would be migrated to this system too
and the regdat.sh script would be dropped. A new architecture would
probably not use regdat.sh either. So I therefore propose this simpler
patch instead, which just adds a local declaration in the generated
file.

This patch implements removal of Cell/B.E. support, including
- Support for the spu-*-* target
- Support for native stand-alone SPU debugging
- Support for integrated debugging of combined PPU/SPU applications
- Remote debugging (gdbserver) support for all the above.
The patch also removes the TARGET_OBJECT_SPU target object type,
as this is available only on Cell/B.E. targets, including
- Native Linux support
- Core file support (including core file generation)
- Remote target support, including removal of the qXfer:spu:read
and qXfer:spu:write remote protocal packets and associated
support in gdbserver.

While working on my other scripts to deal with gdb headers, I noticed
that some files were missing include guards. I wrote a script to add
the missing ones, but found that using the obvious names for the
guards ran into clashes -- for example, gdb/nat/linux-nat.h used
"LINUX_NAT_H", but this was also the script's choice for
gdb/linux-nat.h.
So, I changed the script to normalize all include guards in gdb. This
patch is the result.

Tested by rebuilding; I also ran it through "Fedora-x86_64-m64" on the

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

This patch adds support for Hardware Transactional Memory registers
for the powerpc linux native and core file targets, and for the
pwoerpc linux server stub.
These registers include both the HTM special-purpose registers (TFHAR,
TEXASR and TFIAR) as well as the set of registers that are
checkpointed (saved) when a transaction is initiated, which the
processor restores in the event of a transaction failure.
The set of checkpointed general-purpose registers is returned by the
linux kernel in the same format as the regular general-purpose
registers, defined in struct pt_regs. However, the architecture
specifies that only some of the registers present in pt_regs are
checkpointed (GPRs 0-31, CR, XER, LR and CTR). The kernel fills the
slots for MSR and NIP with other info. The other fields usually don't
have meaningful values. GDB doesn't define registers that are not
checkpointed in the architecture, but when generating a core file, GDB
fills the slot for the checkpointed MSR with the regular MSR. These
are usually similar, although some bits might be different, and in
some cases the checkpointed MSR will have a value of 0 in a
kernel-generated core-file. The checkpointed NIP is filled with TFHAR
by GDB in the core-file, which is what the kernel does. The other
fields are set to 0 by GDB.
Core files generated by the kernel have a note section for
checkpointed GPRs with the same size for both 32-bit and 64-bit
threads, and the values for the registers of a 32-bit thread are
squeezed in the first half, with no useful data in the second half.
GDB generates a smaller note section for 32-bit threads, but can read
both sizes.
The checkpointed XER is required to be 32-bit in the target
description documentation, even though the more recent ISAs define it
as 64-bit wide, since the high-order 32-bits are reserved, and because
in Linux there is no way to get a 64-bit checkpointed XER for 32-bit
threads. If this changes in the future, the target description
feature requirement can be relaxed to allow for a 64-bit checkpointed
XER.
Access to the checkpointed CR (condition register) can be confusing.
The architecture only specifies that CR fields 1 to 7 (the 24 least
significant bits) are checkpointed, but the kernel provides all 8
fields (32 bits). The value of field 0 is not masked by ptrace, so it
will sometimes show the result of some kernel operation, probably
treclaim., which sets this field.
The checkpointed registers are marked not to be saved and restored.
Inferior function calls during an active transaction don't work well,
and it's unclear what should be done in this case. TEXASR and TFIAR
can be altered asynchronously, during transaction failure recording,
so they are also not saved and restored. For consistency neither is
TFHAR.
Record and replay also doesn't work well when transactions are
involved. This patch doesn't address this, so the values of the HTM
SPRs will sometimes be innacurate when the record/relay target is
enabled. For instance, executing a "tbegin." alters TFHAR and TEXASR,
but these changes are not currently recorded.
Because the checkpointed registers are only available when a
transaction is active (or suspended), ptrace can return ENODATA when
gdb tries to read these registers and the inferior is not in a
transactional state. The registers are set to the unavailable state
when this happens. When gbd tries to write to one of these registers,
and it is unavailable, an error is raised.
The "fill" functions for checkpointed register sets in the server stub
are not implemented for the same reason as for the EBB register set,
since ptrace can also return ENODATA for checkpointed regsets. The
same issues with 'G' packets apply here.
Just like for the EBB registers, tracepoints will not mark the
checkpointed registers as unavailable if the inferior was not in a
transaction, so their content will also show 0 instead of
<unavailable> when inspecting trace data.
The new tests record the values of the regular registers before
stepping the inferior through a "tbegin." instruction to start a
transaction, then the checkpointed registers are checked against the
recorded pre-transactional values. New values are written to the
checkpointed registers and recorded, the inferior continues until the
transaction aborts (which is usually immediately when it is resumed),
and the regular registers are checked against the recorded values,
because the abort should have reverted the registers to these values.
Like for the EBB registers, target_store_registers will ignore the
checkpointed registers when called with -1 as the regno
argument (store all registers in one go).

This patch adds support for registers of the Event Based Branching and
Performance Monitoring Units for the powerpc linux native and core
file targets, and for the powerpc linux server stub.
All three EBB registers are accessible. Only a subset of the PMU
registers can be accessed through ptrace. Because of this, the PMU
registers are enumerated individually in gdbarch_tdep, as opposed to
having a single "have_pmu" flag. This is intended to make it easier
to add additional PMU registers in the future, since checking a
"have_pmu" flag elsewhere in the code would no longer be correct. The
tdesc feature is named org.gnu.gdb.power.linux.pmu because of this.
It's unclear if it makes sense to save and restore these registers
across function calls, since some of them can be modified
asynchronously. They are also not tracked in record-replay mode.
The kernel can return ENODATA when ptrace is used to get the EBB
registers, unless a linux performance event that uses EBB is open in
the inferior. For this reason, the "fill" functions in the server
stub for the ebb register sets is not implemented.
Since gdbserver writes all registers in one go before resuming the
inferior, this error would not be detected at the time the user tries
to write to one of the registers on the client side, and gdbserver
would print out warnings every time it resumes the inferior when no
ebb performance event is opened, so there is currently no
straightforward way to handle this case. This means the ebb registers
in the client-side regcache can become dirty when the user tries to
write to them, until the inferior is resumed and stopped again.
A related issue is that 'G' packets used to write to unrelated
registers will include bad data for the EBB registers if they are
unavailable, since no register status information is included in the
'G' packet. This data won't be written to the inferior by the
gdbserver stub because the "fill" functions are not implemented, and
currently the gdbserver stub doesn't change the status of the
registers in its own regcache in response to 'G' packets.
Another limitation for the ebb registers is that traceframes don't
record if registers are available or not, so if these registers are
collected when a tracepoint is hit and the inferior has no ebb event
opened, the user will see zero values for all of them, instead of the
usual <unavailable>.
Because these registers are often unavailable, trying to store them
with target_store_registers with -1 for the regno argument (all
registers) would almost always fail, so they are ignored in this case.

This changes regdat.sh to emit the xmltarget_${name} variable inside
the #ifndef IN_PROCESS_AGENT block. This avoids a -Wunused-variable
warning for some builds. Thanks to Pedro for investigating this one.

On Windows, starting a new process with GDBserver seems to work,
in the sense that the program does get started, and GDBserver
confirms that it is listening for GDB to connect. However, as soon as
GDB establishes the connection with GDBserver, and starts discussing
with it, GDBserver crashes, with a SEGV.
This SEGV occurs in remote-utils.c::prepare_resume_reply...

when doing "make" in the features directory. I think it's a leftover

Newer Linux kernel versions offer two new register sets in support of the
z/Architecture's guarded storage facility. This patch adds XML

tdesc_i386_XXX_linux is used in many places in linux-x86-low.c and this
patch adds a new function i386_linux_read_description to return the right
tdesc according to xcr0. i386_linux_read_description is quite similar to
the counterpart in GDB, and the following patch will share the duplicated
code, so this patch adds arch/tdesc.h includes the declarations of various
tdesc apis which are used by the shared code. The generated c feature
files can include arch/tdesc.h only.

Nowadays, target_desc.reg_defs is a pointer points to a pre-generated
array, which is not flexible. This patch changes it from an array
to a VEC so that GDBserver can create target descriptions dynamically
later. Instead of using pre-generated array, the -generated.c calls
VEC_safe_push to add each register to vector.
Since target_desc.reg_defs is used in IPA, we need to build common/vec.c
for IPA too.

struct target_desc is used by both GDBserver and IPA, but fields
expedite_regs and xmltarget are only used in GDBserver, so this patch wraps
these two fields by ifndef IN_PROCESS_AGENT. This patch also changes
regformats/regdat.sh to generate .c files in this way too.

This patch adds support for the registers added by the
Memory Protection Keys for Userspace (PKU aka PKEYs) feature.
Native and remote debugging are covered by this patch.
The XSAVE area is extended with a new state containing
the 32-bit wide PKRU register. The new register is added to
amd64-avx-mpx_avx512-* tdesc, thus it is renamed accordingly. Also,
respective xstate mask X86_XSTATE_AVX_MPX_AVX512_MASK is renamed to
X86_XSTATE_AVX_MPX_AVX512_PKU_MASK to reflect the new feature set
it supports.

Add a dedicated target description for the feature combination
avx-avx512 as implemented by certain IA CPU models.
The corresponding X86_XSTATE_AVX_AVX512_MASK already exists, but shared
the tdesc with X86_XSTATE_AVX_MPX_AVX512_MASK. This caused MPX registers
displayed as undefined on CPUs that only implemented
X86_XSTATE_AVX_AVX512_MASK, which is undesired. This patch solves this issue.
This patch also corrects the wrong usage of x32-avx-mpx-avx512, which is
replaced by x32-avx-avx512. The MPX feature is not implemented in x32 mode.

To better reflect the actual feature set covered by the IA target
descriptions, the existing descriptions are renamed. Each feature of
the extended state is added to the name of a description or xstate mask
starting from AVX.
For example, amd64-mpx-avx512-linux becomes amd64-avx-mpx-avx512-linux,
while amd64-avx-linux remains unchanged.
Likewise, the corresponding xstate masks are changed, e.g. from
X86_XSTATE_MPX_AVX512_MASK to X86_XSTATE_AVX_MPX_AVX512_MASK.
