In his review of my recent checkpoint work (commit e5501dd4321),
Andrew Burgess suggested that I use GDB's structured table generation
mechanism for the "info checkpoints" command. This patch does
that.
Andrew also recommended using print_stack_frame() for the "Frame"
column. I tried this, but ran into some problems, which are described
in a comment in the code. I got it to mostly work, except for the
case when the current/active fork is running. Switching context away
from and then back to a running fork doesn't work. It could, perhaps,
be made to work, but I'm not convinced that the checkpoint facility is
important enough to expend the effort for this case. So, instead,
I simply adapted the existing checkpoint frame printing code to
use the ui_out machinery instead of gdb_printf.

On x86_64-linux, with gcc 7.5.0 I ran into a build breaker:
...
linux-fork.c: In function ‘void detach_checkpoint_command(const char*, int)’:
linux-fork.c:744:16: error: unused variable ‘inf’ [-Werror=unused-variable]
auto [fi, inf] = parse_checkpoint_id (args);
^
linux-fork.c: In function ‘void linux_fork_context(fork_info*, int, inferior*)’:
linux-fork.c:1020:22: error: unused variable ‘oldinf’ [-Werror=unused-variable]
auto [oldfp, oldinf] = find_fork_ptid (inferior_ptid);
^
...
Fix this by dropping the unused variables, similar how that was done in commit
bc13da1980c ("[gdb/build] Fix unused var in corelow.c").
Tested on x86_64-linux, by completing a build.

This commit causes a "process ptid" to be passed to all calls
of target_pid_to_str in linux-fork.c. A "process ptid" is one
in which only the pid component is set to a non-zero value;
both the lwp and tid components are zero.
The reason for doing this is that pids associated with checkpoints can
never be a thread due to the fact that checkpoints (which are
implemented by forking a process) can only (reasonably) work with
single-threaded processes.
Without this commit, many of the "info checkpoints" commands
in gdb.multi/checkpoint-multi.exp will incorrectly show some
of the checkpoints as threads. E.g...

(gdb) catch exec
Catchpoint 2 (exec)
(gdb) add-inferior

The current linux checkpoint code, most of which may be found in
linux-fork.c, is quite broken when attempting to use more than
one inferior. Running GDB will show internal errors when starting
two inferiors, placing a checkpoint in one, then switching to
the other and doing one of the following commands, "restart",
"detach", "kill", or continue (to program exit). Test cases
for two of those scenarios may be found in this bug:
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=31065
I've tested for each of the scenarios and many more in the new
test case, gdb.multi/checkpoint-multi.exp.
I started off with the goal of fixing just those problems, and was
mostly successful with a much smaller patch, but doing "info
checkpoints" with more than one inferior didn't work correctly due to
some of the inferiors being in the wrong program space. That led me
to making the linux-fork code fully inferior-aware.
Prior to this commit, the list of forks was being maintained in a
global named named 'fork_list'. I turned this into a per-inferior
data structure. There was also global named 'highest_fork_num' which
is also now part of the per-inferior struct. A registry key named
'checkpoint_inferior_data_key' along with function
'get_checkpoint_inferior_data' is used to access the per-inferior
data. This new function, get_checkpoint_inferior_data, is only
called by the new functions 'fork_list', 'reset_highest_fork_num',
and increment_highest_fork_num, each of which is passed a pointer to
the inferior. Most occurrences referring to the (previously) global
'fork_list' have been replaced by 'fork_list (inf)'. In some
functions, where the 'fork_list' is referenced multiple times, a local
named 'fork_list' is declared and initialized instead, like this:
auto &fork_list = ::fork_list (inf);
The constructor for 'struct fork_info' has gained an additional
parameter. In addition to passing the pid of the new fork, we now
also pass the fork identifier, fork_num, to the constructor. This
integer is shown to the user in the "info checkpoints" command and
is provided by the user, perhaps in conjunction with the inferior
number, in commands which manipulate checkpoints, e.g. 'restart' and
'delete checkpoint'.
When checkpoints are used in only one inferior, this commit will
present information to the user and will accept checkpoint identifiers
to commands in much the same way as the code did before this commit.
Per Pedro Alves's recommendations, the "info checkpoints" command has
been changed somewhat. "info checkpoints" used to display "(main
process)" for the first process in the checkpoint list. This is no
longer done because it does not provide useful information. It also
used to display "<running>", when the process is running and no useful
frame information may be displayed. This has been changed to
"(running)" in order to be more consistent with the output of the
"info threads" command. A new column has been added to the output for
showing the active process in the output from "info checkpoints".
This column will display 'y' for the active process and 'n' for the
others. For the active inferior a '*' is also printed preceding the
checkpoint identifier. Here's what things look(ed) like before and
after for just one inferior:
Before:
(gdb) info checkpoints
* 0 Thread 0x7ffff7cd3740 (LWP 84201) (main process) at 0x40114a, file hello.c, line 28
1 process 84205 at 0x401199, file hello.c, line 51
2 process 84206 at 0x4011a3, file hello.c, line 53
After:
(gdb) info checkpoints
Id Active Target Id Frame
* 0 y process 551311 at 0x40114a, file hello.c, line 28
1 n process 551314 at 0x401199, file hello.c, line 51
2 n process 551315 at 0x4011a3, file hello.c, line 53
(The Thread versus process distinction is handled by another
patch - the "After" example assumes that patch is applied too.)
When there are multiple inferiors, the "info checkpoints" output looks
like this:
(gdb) info checkpoints
Id Active Target Id Frame
1.0 y process 535276 at 0x401199, file hello.c, line 51
1.1 n process 535283 at 0x401199, file hello.c, line 51
1.2 n process 535288 at 0x401199, file hello.c, line 51
2.1 n process 535280 at 0x401258, file goodbye.c, line 62

3.2 n process 535287 at 0x40115c, file hangout.c, line 31
A new function named 'parse_checkpoint_id' has been added. As its
name suggests, it's responsible for parsing a string representing a
checkpoint identifier. These identifiers may be either a decimal
number representing the checkpoint number in the current inferior or
two decimal numbers separated by '.', in which case the first is the
inferior number and the second is the checkpoint number in that
inferior. It is called by delete_checkpoint_command,
detach_checkpoint_command, info_checkpoints_command, and
restart_command. Calls to 'parse_checkpoint_id' replace calls to
'parse_and_eval_long', plus error checking and error reporting code
near the calls to 'parse_and_eval_long'. As such, error checking and
reporting has been consolidated into a single function and the
messages output are more uniform, though this has necessitated changes
to the existing test case gdb.base/checkpoint.exp.
The functions 'find_fork_ptid' and 'find_fork_pid' used to return a
pointer to a fork_info struct. They now return a pair consisting of
the pointer to a fork_info struct in addition to a pointer to the
inferior containing that checkpoint.
'find_fork_id' returns a pointer to a fork_info struct just as it did
before, but it's now gained a new parameter, 'inf', which is the
inferior in which to look.
info_checkpoints_command used to simply iterate over the list of
forks (checkpoints), printing each one out. It now needs to iterate
over all inferiors and, for those which have checkpoints, it needs
to iterate over the list of checkpoints in that inferior. As noted
earlier, the format of the output has been changed so that checkpoint
identifiers incorporating an inferior number may be printed.
linux_fork_context, called by restart_command, now contains code to
switch inferiors when the fork being restarted is in an inferior which
is different from the current one. The scoped_switch_fork_info class
now also contains code for switching inferiors in both the constructor
and destructor.
gdb/linux-nat.c has a few changes. All but one of them are related
to passing the inferior to one of the linux-fork functions. But
one of the tests in linux_nat_target::detach has also changed in
a non-obvious way. In attempting to determine whether to call
linux_fork_detach(), that code used to do:
if (pid == inferior_ptid.pid () && forks_exist_p ())
It's been simplified to:
if (forks_exist_p (inf))
I had added the 'pid == inferior_ptid.pid ()' condition in late 2023
while working on a detach bug. It was kind of a hack to prevent
calling linux_fork_detach() when in a different inferior. That's no
longer needed since the call to forks_exist_p does this directly -
i.e. it is now inferior-aware.
Finally, the header file 'linux-fork.h' has been updated to reflect
the fact that add_fork, linux_fork_killall, linux_fork_detach, and
forks_exist_p all now require that a pointer to an inferior be passed
to these functions. Additionally (as mentioned earlier),
find_fork_pid now returns std::pair<fork_info *, inferior *> instead
'of fork_info *'.

- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as

(gdb) FAIL: gdb.base/kill-during-detach.exp: exit_p=true: checkpoint_p=true: \
python kill_and_detach()
...
The FAIL happens as follows:
- gdb is debugging a process A
- a checkpoint is created, in other words, fork is called in the inferior,
after which we have:
- checkpoint 0 (the fork parent, process A), and
- checkpoint 1 (the fork child, process B).
- during checkpoint creation, lseek is called in the inferior (process A) for
all file descriptors, and it returns != -1 for at least one file descriptor.
- the process A continues in the background
- gdb detaches, from process A
- gdb switches to process B, in other words, it restarts checkpoint 1
- while restarting checkpoint 1, gdb tries to call lseek in the inferior
(process B), but this fails because gdb incorrectly thinks that inferior B
is running.
This happens because linux_nat_switch_fork patches the pid of process B into
the current inferior and current thread which where originally representing
process A. So, because process A was running in the background, the
thread_info fields executing and resumed are set accordingly, but they are not
correct for process B.
There's a line in fork_load_infrun_state that fixes up the thread_info field
stop_pc, so fix this by adding similar fixups for the executing and resumed
fields alongside.
The FAIL did not always reproduce, so extend the test-case to reliably
trigger this scenario.

When using GDB on native linux, it can happen that, while attempting
to detach an inferior, the inferior may have been exited or have been
killed, yet still be in the list of lwps. Should that happen, the
assert in x86_linux_update_debug_registers in
gdb/nat/x86-linux-dregs.c will trigger. The line in question looks
like this:
gdb_assert (lwp_is_stopped (lwp));
For this case, the lwp isn't stopped - it's dead.
The bug which brought this problem to my attention is one in which the
pwntools library uses GDB to to debug a process; as the script is
shutting things down, it kills the process that GDB is debugging and
also sends GDB a SIGTERM signal, which causes GDB to detach all
inferiors prior to exiting. Here's a link to the bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2192169
The following shell command mimics part of what the pwntools
reproducer script does (with regard to shutting things down), but
reproduces the bug much less reliably. I have found it necessary to
run the command a bunch of times before seeing the bug. (I usually
see it within 5-10 repetitions.) If you choose to try this command,
make sure that you have no running "cat" or "gdb" processes first!
cat </dev/zero >/dev/null & \
(sleep 5; (kill -KILL `pgrep cat` & kill -TERM `pgrep gdb`)) & \
sleep 1 ; \
gdb -q -iex 'set debuginfod enabled off' -ex 'set height 0' \
-ex c /usr/bin/cat `pgrep cat`
So, basically, the idea here is to kill both gdb and cat at roughly
the same time. If we happen to attempt the detach before the process
lwp has been deleted from GDB's (linux native) LWP data structures,
then the assert will trigger. The relevant part of the backtrace
looks like this:

My colleague, Andrew Burgess, has done some recent work on other
problems with detach. Upon hearing of this problem, he came up a test
case which reliably reproduces the problem and tests for a few other
problems as well. In addition to testing detach when the inferior has
terminated due to a signal, it also tests detach when the inferior has
exited normally. Andrew observed that the linux-native-only
"checkpoint" command would be affected too, so the test also tests
those cases when there's an active checkpoint.
For the LWP exit / termination case with no checkpoint, that's handled
via newly added checks of the waitstatus in detach_one_lwp in
linux-nat.c.
For the checkpoint detach problem, I chose to pass the lwp_info
to linux_fork_detach in linux-fork.c. With that in place, suitable
tests were added before attempting a PTRACE_DETACH operation.
I added a few asserts at the beginning of linux_fork_detach and
modified the caller code so that the newly added asserts shouldn't
trigger. (That's what the 'pid == inferior_ptid.pid' check is about
in gdb/linux-nat.c.)
Lastly, I'll note that the checkpoint code needs some work with regard
to background execution. This patch doesn't attempt to fix that
problem, but it doesn't make it any worse. It does slightly improve
the situation with detach because, due to the check noted above,
linux_fork_detach() won't be called for the wrong inferior when there
are multiple inferiors. (There are at least two other problems with
the checkpoint code when there are multiple inferiors. See:
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=31065)
This commit also adds a new test,
gdb.base/process-dies-while-detaching.exp. Andrew Burgess is the
primary author of this test case. Its design is similar to that of
gdb.threads/main-thread-exit-during-detach.exp, which was also written

This test checks that GDB correctly handles several cases that can
occur when GDB attempts to detach an inferior process. The process
can exit or be terminated (e.g. via SIGKILL) prior to GDB's event
loop getting a chance to remove it from GDB's internal data
structures. To complicate things even more, detach works differently
when a checkpoint (created via GDB's "checkpoint" command) exists for
the inferior. This test checks all four possibilities: process exit
with no checkpoint, process termination with no checkpoint, process
exit with a checkpoint, and process termination with a checkpoint.

Remove get_current_regcache, inlining the call to get_thread_regcache in
callers. When possible, pass the right thread_info object known from
the local context. Otherwise, fall back to passing `inferior_thread ()`.
This makes the reference to global context bubble up one level, a small
step towards the long term goal of reducing the number of references to
global context (or rather, moving those references as close as possible
to the top of the call tree).
No behavior change expected.

During my audit of the use of gdb_exception with regard to QUIT
processing, I found a try/catch in the scoped_switch_fork_info
destructor.
Static analysis found this call path from the destructor to
maybe_quit():
scoped_switch_fork_info::~scoped_switch_fork_info()
-> remove_breakpoints()
-> remove_breakpoint(bp_location*)
-> remove_breakpoint_1(bp_location*, remove_bp_reason)
-> memory_validate_breakpoint(gdbarch*, bp_target_info*)
-> target_read_memory(unsigned long, unsigned char*, long)
-> target_read(target_ops*, target_object, char const*, unsigned char*, unsigned long, long)
-> maybe_quit()
Since it's not safe to do a 'throw' from a destructor, we simply
call set_quit_flag and, for gdb_exception_forced_quit, also
set sync_quit_force_run. This will cause the appropriate
exception to be rethrown at the next QUIT check.
Another case is the try / catch in tui_getc() in tui-io.c. The
existing catch swallows the exception. I've added a catch for
'gdb_exception_forced_quit', which also swallows the exception,
but also sets sync_quit_force_run and calls set_quit_flag in
order to restart forced quit processing at the next QUIT check.
This is required because it isn't safe to throw into/through
readline.

In an earlier version of the pager rewrite series, it was important to
audit unfiltered output calls to see which were truly necessary.
This is no longer necessary, but it still seems like a decent cleanup
to change calls to avoid explicitly passing gdb_stdout. That is,
rather than using something like fprintf_unfiltered with gdb_stdout,
the code ought to use plain printf_unfiltered instead.
This patch makes this change. I went ahead and converted all the
_filtered calls I could find, as well, for the same clarity.

I wanted to find, and potentially modify, all the spots where the
'tid' parameter to the ptid_t constructor was used. So, I temporarily
removed this parameter and then rebuilt.
In order to make it simpler to search through the "real" (nonzero)
uses of this parameter, something I knew I'd have to do multiple
times, I removed any ", 0" from constructor calls.

A following patch will want to take some action when a pending wait
status is set on or removed from a thread. Add a getter and a setter on
thread_info for the pending waitstatus, so that we can add some code in
the setter later.
The thing is, the pending wait status field is in the
thread_suspend_state, along with other fields that we need to backup
before and restore after the thread does an inferior function call.
Therefore, make the thread_suspend_state member private
(thread_info::suspend becomes thread_info::m_suspend), and add getters /
setters for all of its fields:
- pending wait status
- stop signal
- stop reason
- stop pc
For the pending wait status, add the additional has_pending_waitstatus
and clear_pending_waitstatus methods.
I think this makes the thread_info interface a bit nicer, because we
now access the fields as:
thread->stop_pc ()
rather than
thread->suspend.stop_pc
The stop_pc field being in the `suspend` structure is an implementation
detail of thread_info that callers don't need to be aware of.
For the backup / restore of the thread_suspend_state structure, add
save_suspend_to and restore_suspend_from methods. You might wonder why
`save_suspend_to`, as opposed to a simple getter like
thread_suspend_state &suspend ();
I want to make it clear that this is to be used only for backing up and
restoring the suspend state, _not_ to access fields like:
thread->suspend ()->stop_pc
Adding some getters / setters allows adding some assertions. I find
that this helps understand how things are supposed to work. Add:
- When getting the pending status (pending_waitstatus method), ensure
that there is a pending status.
- When setting a pending status (set_pending_waitstatus method), ensure
there is no pending status.
There is one case I found where this wasn't true - in
remote_target::process_initial_stop_replies - which needed adjustments
to respect that contract. I think it's because
process_initial_stop_replies is kind of (ab)using the
thread_info::suspend::waitstatus to store some statuses temporarily, for
its internal use (statuses it doesn't intent on leaving pending).
process_initial_stop_replies pulls out stop replies received during the
initial connection using target_wait. It always stores the received
event in `evthread->suspend.waitstatus`. But it only sets
waitstatus_pending_p, if it deems the event interesting enough to leave
pending, to be reported to the core:
if (ws.kind != TARGET_WAITKIND_STOPPED
|| ws.value.sig != GDB_SIGNAL_0)
evthread->suspend.waitstatus_pending_p = 1;
It later uses this flag a bit below, to choose which thread to make the
"selected" one:
if (selected == NULL
&& thread->suspend.waitstatus_pending_p)
selected = thread;
And ultimately that's used if the user-visible mode is all-stop, so that
we print the stop for that interesting thread:
/* In all-stop, we only print the status of one thread, and leave
others with their status pending. */
if (!non_stop)
{
thread_info *thread = selected;
if (thread == NULL)
thread = lowest_stopped;
if (thread == NULL)
thread = first;
print_one_stopped_thread (thread);
}
But in any case (all-stop or non-stop), print_one_stopped_thread needs
to access the waitstatus value of these threads that don't have a
pending waitstatus (those that had TARGET_WAITKIND_STOPPED +
GDB_SIGNAL_0). This doesn't work with the assertions I've
put.
So, change the code to only set the thread's wait status if it is an
interesting one that we are going to leave pending. If the thread
stopped due to a non-interesting event (TARGET_WAITKIND_STOPPED +
GDB_SIGNAL_0), don't store it. Adjust print_one_stopped_thread to
understand that if a thread has no pending waitstatus, it's because it
stopped with TARGET_WAITKIND_STOPPED + GDB_SIGNAL_0.
The call to set_last_target_status also uses the pending waitstatus.
However, given that the pending waitstatus for the thread may have been
cleared in print_one_stopped_thread (and that there might not even be a
pending waitstatus in the first place, as explained above), it is no
longer possible to do it at this point. To fix that, move the call to
set_last_target_status in print_one_stopped_thread. I think this will
preserve the existing behavior, because set_last_target_status is
currently using the current thread's wait status. And the current
thread is the last one for which print_one_stopped_thread is called. So
by calling set_last_target_status in print_one_stopped_thread, we'll get
the same result. set_last_target_status will possibly be called
multiple times, but only the last call will matter. It just means
possibly more calls to set_last_target_status, but those are cheap.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

I was inspired by a series of patches merged by Alan Modra in the other
projects, so I did the same in GDB with a bit of Coccinelle and grep.
This patch removes the unnecessary NULL checks before calls to xfree.
They are unnecessary because xfree already does a NULL check. Since
free is supposed to handle NULL values correctly, the NULL check in
xfree itself is also questionable, but I've left it there for now.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* coffread.c (patch_type): Remove NULL check before xfree.
* corefile.c (set_gnutarget): Likewise.
* cp-abi.c (set_cp_abi_as_auto_default): Likewise.
* exec.c (build_section_table): Likewise.
* remote.c (remote_target::pass_signals): Likewise.
* utils.c (n_spaces): Likewise.
* cli/cli-script.c (document_command): Likewise.
* i386-windows-tdep.c (core_process_module_section): Likewise.
* linux-fork.c (struct fork_info) <~fork_info>: Likewise.

This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method,
objfile::arch.
To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol
reading. Making this change improved performance from 1.986 seconds
to 1.869 seconds. Both measurements were done by taking the mean of
10 runs on a fixed copy of the gdb executable.

Unless I'm missing something, this function is a complicated way of
saying "fork_list.size () == 1".
gdb/ChangeLog:
* linux-fork.c (one_fork_p): Simplify.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:
CXX dcache.o
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:
commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9
Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700
Remove unnecessary function prototypes.
I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

This commit adds multi-target support to GDB. What this means is that
with this commit, GDB can now be connected to different targets at the
same time. E.g., you can debug a live native process and a core dump
at the same time, connect to multiple gdbservers, etc.
Actually, the word "target" is overloaded in gdb. We already have a
target stack, with pushes several target_ops instances on top of one
another. We also have "info target" already, which means something
completely different to what this patch does.
So from here on, I'll be using the "target connections" term, to mean
an open process_stratum target, pushed on a target stack. This patch
makes gdb have multiple target stacks, and multiple process_stratum
targets open simultaneously. The user-visible changes / commands will
also use this terminology, but of course it's all open to debate.
User-interface-wise, not that much changes. The main difference is
that each inferior may have its own target connection.
A target connection (e.g., a target extended-remote connection) may
support debugging multiple processes, just as before.
Say you're debugging against gdbserver in extended-remote mode, and
you do "add-inferior" to prepare to spawn a new process, like:
(gdb) target extended-remote :9999
...
(gdb) start
...
(gdb) add-inferior
Added inferior 2
(gdb) inferior 2
[Switching to inferior 2 [<null>] (<noexec>)]
(gdb) file a.out
...
(gdb) start
...
At this point, you have two inferiors connected to the same gdbserver.
With this commit, GDB will maintain a target stack per inferior,
instead of a global target stack.
To preserve the behavior above, by default, "add-inferior" makes the
new inferior inherit a copy of the target stack of the current
inferior. Same across a fork - the child inherits a copy of the
target stack of the parent. While the target stacks are copied, the
targets themselves are not. Instead, target_ops is made a
refcounted_object, which means that target_ops instances are
refcounted, which each inferior counting for a reference.
What if you want to create an inferior and connect it to some _other_
target? For that, this commit introduces a new "add-inferior
-no-connection" option that makes the new inferior not share the
current inferior's target. So you could do:
(gdb) target extended-remote :9999
Remote debugging using :9999
...
(gdb) add-inferior -no-connection
[New inferior 2]
Added inferior 2
(gdb) inferior 2
[Switching to inferior 2 [<null>] (<noexec>)]
(gdb) info inferiors
Num Description Executable
1 process 18401 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main
* 2 <null>
(gdb) tar extended-remote :10000
Remote debugging using :10000
...
(gdb) info inferiors
Num Description Executable
1 process 18401 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main
* 2 process 18450 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main
(gdb)
A following patch will extended "info inferiors" to include a column
indicating which connection an inferior is bound to, along with a
couple other UI tweaks.
Other than that, debugging is the same as before. Users interact with
inferiors and threads as before. The only difference is that
inferiors may be bound to processes running in different machines.
That's pretty much all there is to it in terms of noticeable UI
changes.
On to implementation.
Since we can be connected to different systems at the same time, a
ptid_t is no longer a unique identifier. Instead a thread can be
identified by a pair of ptid_t and 'process_stratum_target *', the
later being the instance of the process_stratum target that owns the
process/thread. Note that process_stratum_target inherits from
target_ops, and all process_stratum targets inherit from
process_stratum_target. In earlier patches, many places in gdb were
converted to refer to threads by thread_info pointer instead of
ptid_t, but there are still places in gdb where we start with a
pid/tid and need to find the corresponding inferior or thread_info
objects. So you'll see in the patch many places adding a
process_stratum_target parameter to functions that used to take only a
ptid_t.
Since each inferior has its own target stack now, we can always find
the process_stratum target for an inferior. That is done via a
inf->process_target() convenience method.
Since each inferior has its own target stack, we need to handle the
"beneath" calls when servicing target calls. The solution I settled
with is just to make sure to switch the current inferior to the
inferior you want before making a target call. Not relying on global
context is just not feasible in current GDB. Fortunately, there
aren't that many places that need to do that, because generally most
code that calls target methods already has the current context
pointing to the right inferior/thread. Note, to emphasize -- there's
no method to "switch to this target stack". Instead, you switch the
current inferior, and that implicitly switches the target stack.
In some spots, we need to iterate over all inferiors so that we reach
all target stacks.
Native targets are still singletons. There's always only a single
instance of such targets.
Remote targets however, we'll have one instance per remote connection.
The exec target is still a singleton. There's only one instance. I
did not see the point of instanciating more than one exec_target
object.
After vfork, we need to make sure to push the exec target on the new
inferior. See exec_on_vfork.
For type safety, functions that need a {target, ptid} pair to identify
a thread, take a process_stratum_target pointer for target parameter
instead of target_ops *. Some shared code in gdb/nat/ also need to
gain a target pointer parameter. This poses an issue, since gdbserver
doesn't have process_stratum_target, only target_ops. To fix this,
this commit renames gdbserver's target_ops to process_stratum_target.
I think this makes sense. There's no concept of target stack in
gdbserver, and gdbserver's target_ops really implements a
process_stratum-like target.
The thread and inferior iterator functions also gain
process_stratum_target parameters. These are used to be able to
iterate over threads and inferiors of a given target. Following usual
conventions, if the target pointer is null, then we iterate over
threads and inferiors of all targets.
I tried converting "add-inferior" to the gdb::option framework, as a
preparatory patch, but that stumbled on the fact that gdb::option does
not support file options yet, for "add-inferior -exec". I have a WIP
patchset that adds that, but it's not a trivial patch, mainly due to
need to integrate readline's filename completion, so I deferred that
to some other time.
In infrun.c/infcmd.c, the main change is that we need to poll events
out of all targets. See do_target_wait. Right after collecting an
event, we switch the current inferior to an inferior bound to the
target that reported the event, so that target methods can be used
while handling the event. This makes most of the code transparent to
multi-targets. See fetch_inferior_event.
infrun.c:stop_all_threads is interesting -- in this function we need
to stop all threads of all targets. What the function does is send an
asynchronous stop request to all threads, and then synchronously waits
for events, with target_wait, rinse repeat, until all it finds are
stopped threads. Now that we have multiple targets, it's not
efficient to synchronously block in target_wait waiting for events out
of one target. Instead, we implement a mini event loop, with
interruptible_select, select'ing on one file descriptor per target.
For this to work, we need to be able to ask the target for a waitable
file descriptor. Such file descriptors already exist, they are the
descriptors registered in the main event loop with add_file_handler,
inside the target_async implementations. This commit adds a new
target_async_wait_fd target method that just returns the file
descriptor in question. See wait_one / stop_all_threads in infrun.c.
The 'threads_executing' global is made a per-target variable. Since
it is only relevant to process_stratum_target targets, this is where
it is put, instead of in target_ops.
You'll notice that remote.c includes some FIXME notes. These refer to
the fact that the global arrays that hold data for the remote packets
supported are still globals. For example, if we connect to two
different servers/stubs, then each might support different remote
protocol features. They might even be different architectures, like
e.g., one ARM baremetal stub, and a x86 gdbserver, to debug a
host/controller scenario as a single program. That isn't going to
work correctly today, because of said globals. I'm leaving fixing
that for another pass, since it does not appear to be trivial, and I'd
rather land the base work first. It's already useful to be able to
debug multiple instances of the same server (e.g., a distributed
cluster, where you have full control over the servers installed), so I
think as is it's already reasonable incremental progress.
Current limitations:
- You can only resume more that one target at the same time if all
targets support asynchronous debugging, and support non-stop mode.
It should be possible to support mixed all-stop + non-stop
backends, but that is left for another time. This means that
currently in order to do multi-target with gdbserver you need to
issue "maint set target-non-stop on". I would like to make that
mode be the default, but we're not there yet. Note that I'm
talking about how the target backend works, only. User-visible
all-stop mode works just fine.
- As explained above, connecting to different remote servers at the
same time is likely to produce bad results if they don't support the
exact set of RSP features.

With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants:
* The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character.
* The last character of a command help is not a newline character.
Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of :
[PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html
but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then.
Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above
invariants.
Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line
of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.'
or ',' character.
This was giving inconsistent results :
* The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated,
sometimes not.
* The first line of command helps was not always designed to be
readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first
'.' or ',' character.
This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems:
< catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names
< down-silently -- Same as the `down' command
while the new help is:
> catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised.
> catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled.
> catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers.
> down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything.
Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline
character, but this was not respected by all commands.
The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences.
So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the
end of %OPTIONS% replacement.
This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants
given above.
It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs.
Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by
'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command
help) now outputs the full first line of a command help.
This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs.
There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot
of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings).

* cli/cli-decode.h (print_doc_line): Add for_value_prefix argument.
* cli/cli-decode.c (print_doc_line): Likewise. It now prints
the full first line, except when FOR_VALUE_PREFIX. In this case,
the trailing '.' is not output, and the first character is uppercased.
(print_help_for_command): Update call to print_doc_line.
(print_doc_of_command): Likewise.
* cli/cli-setshow.c (deprecated_show_value_hack): Likewise.
* cli/cli-option.c (append_indented_doc): Do not append newline.
(build_help_option): Append newline after first appended_indented_doc
only if a second call is done.
(build_help): Append 2 new lines before each option, except the first
one.
* compile/compile.c (_initialize_compile): Add new lines after
%OPTIONS%, when not at the end of the help.
Change help doc or code
producing the help doc to respect the invariants.

Also removed the new line after 'Options:', as all other commands
do not put an empty line between 'Options:' and the first option.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.
The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.

This rewrites gdb's TRY/CATCH to plain C++ try/catch. The patch was
largely written by script, though one change (to a comment in
common-exceptions.h) was reverted by hand.

This changes the exception's "message" member to be a shared_ptr
wrapping a std::string. This allows removing the stack of exception
messages, because now exceptions will self-destruct when needed. This
also adds a noexcept copy constructor and operator= to gdb_exception,
plus a "what" method.

Currently the target pid_to_str method returns a const char *, so many
implementations have a static buffer that they update. This patch
changes these methods to return a std::string instead. I think this
is cleaner and avoids possible gotchas when calling pid_to_str on
different ptids in a single statement. (Though no such calls exist
currently.)
This also updates various helper functions, and the gdbarch pid_to_str
methods.
I also made a best effort to fix all the callers, but I can't build
some of the *-nat.c files.
Tested by the buildbot.

Don't rely on "inferior_ptid" deep within add_fork. In the
multi-target branch, I'm forcing inferior_ptid to null_ptid early in
infrun event handling to make sure we don't inadvertently rely on the
current thread/target when we shouldn't, and that caught some bad or
unnecessary assumptions throughout.

* linux-linux.h (add_fork): Return void.
