This updates the copyright headers to include 2025. I did this by
running gdb/copyright.py and then manually modifying a few files as
noted by the script.

Implement extension_language_ops::find_objfile_from_buildid within
GDB's Python API. Doing this allows users to write Python extensions
that can help locate missing objfiles when GDB opens a core file. A
handler might perform some project- or site-specific actions to find a
missing objfile. Or might provide some project- or site-specific
advice to the user on how they can obtain the missing objfile.
The implementation is very similar to the approach taken in:

The following new commands are added as commands implemented in
Python, this is similar to how the Python missing debug and unwinder
commands are implemented:
info missing-objfile-handlers
enable missing-objfile-handler LOCUS HANDLER
disable missing-objfile-handler LOCUS HANDLER
To make use of this extension hook a user will create missing objfile
handler objects, and registers these handlers with GDB. When GDB
opens a core file and encounters a missing objfile each handler is
called in turn until one is able to help. Here is a minimal handler
that does nothing useful:

Returning None from the __call__ method tells GDB that this handler
was unable to find the missing objfile, and GDB should ask any other
registered handlers.
Possible return values from a handler:
- None: This means the handler couldn't help. GDB will call other
registered handlers to see if they can help instead.
- False: The handler has done all it can, but the objfile couldn't
be found. GDB will not call any other handlers, and will
continue without the objfile.
- True: The handler has installed the objfile into a location where
GDB would normally expect to find it. GDB should repeat its
normal lookup process and the objfile should now be found.
- A string: The handler can return a filename, which is the missing
objfile. GDB will load this file.
Handlers can be registered globally, or per program space. GDB checks
the handlers for the current program space first, and then all of the
global handles. The first handler that returns a value that is not
None, has "handled" the missing objfile, at which point GDB continues.
The implementation of this feature is mostly straight forward. I have
reworked some of the missing debug file related code so that it can be
shared with this feature. E.g. gdb/python/lib/gdb/missing_files.py is
mostly content moved from gdb/python/lib/gdb/missing_debug.py, but
updated to be more generic. Now gdb/python/lib/gdb/missing_debug.py
and the new file gdb/python/lib/gdb/missing_objfile.py both call into
the missing_files.py file.
For gdb/python/lib/gdb/command/missing_files.py this is even more
extreme, gdb/python/lib/gdb/command/missing_debug.py is completely
gone now and gdb/python/lib/gdb/command/missing_files.py provides all
of the new commands in a generic way.
I have made one change to the existing Python API, I renamed the
attribute Progspace.missing_debug_handlers to
Progspace.missing_file_handlers. I don't see this as too
problematic. This attribute was only used to implement the missing
debug feature and was never documented beyond the fact that it
existed. There was no reason for users to be touching this attribute.

GDB deprecated the commands "show/set mpx bound" in GDB 15.1, as Intel
listed Intel(R) Memory Protection Extensions (MPX) as removed in 2019.
MPX is also deprecated in gcc (since v9.1), the linux kernel (since v5.6)
and glibc (since v2.35). Let's now remove MPX support in GDB completely.
This includes the removal of:
- MPX functionality including register support
- deprecated mpx commands
- i386 and amd64 implementation of the hooks report_signal_info and
get_siginfo_type
- tests
- and pretty printer.
We keep MPX register numbers to not break compatibility with old gdbservers.

By default GDB will be printing the hex payload of the ptwrite package as
auxiliary information. To customize this, the user can register a ptwrite
filter function in python, that takes the payload and the PC as arguments and
returns a string which will be printed instead. Registering the filter
function is done using a factory pattern to make per-thread filtering easier.

A co-worker requested that the DAP code emit a scope for global
variables. It's not really practical to do this for all globals, but
it seemed reasonable to do this for globals coming from the frame's
compilation unit. For Ada in particular, this is convenient as it
exposes package-scoped variables.

After my recent changes the data-directory build now uses
silent-rules.mk to reduce the output.
One problem that remains was the use of mkinstalldirs by stamp-python
and stamp-guile for creating some directories, the mkinstalldirs
prints some messages, so we're left with output like this:

mkdir -p -- ./python/gdb/dap

mkdir -p -- ./python/gdb/printer
I was looking at adding a --silent option to the mkinstalldirs script,
however, when I took a look at the automake package (which is where
mkinstalldirs comes from) it turns out that mkinstalldirs is
deprecated, at the advice is to use 'install-sh -d' instead.
Just like we carry mkinstalldirs in the top-level directory, we also
carry install-sh, and a version of install-sh which supports the -d
flag.
And best of all, 'install-sh -d' doesn't appear to print any of the
information messages to stdout that mkinstalldirs does, so if we
switch to use that, we get a quieter build.
There should be no changes in what is built after this commit

For some reason install-dvi is missing although other targets of the
same family are present. This looks like an oversight.
This enables calling 'make install-dvi' from the top-level build
directory.
Fix what looks like another oversight: include 'pdf' in 'all-doc' in
gdb/doc/Makefile.in.

This commit makes use of gdb/silent-rules.mk in the data-directory
Makefile.in. I've only updated the rules that actually generate
things, I've not touched the install or uninstall rules, this matches
gdb/Makefile.in.
I've not managed to completely silence all of the recipe output, the
mkinstalldirs command outputs some diagnostic text which looks like
this:

I have a patch for mkinstalldirs that fixes this (by adding a new
--silent command line flag), but that patch needs to be submitted to
automake, then an updated mkinstalldirs sync'd to the gcc repository,
and then copied into the binutils-gdb repository... so I'm leaving
that for a future project.
Then the guild compiler also emits some diagnostic output, which looks
like this:

The 'wrote' lines are from the guild compiler. The only way to
silence these would be to redirect stdout to /dev/null I think. I did
prototype this, but wasn't 100% convinced about that part of the
patch, so I've decided to leave that for another day.
I did need to add a new SILENT_ECHO variable to silent-rules.mk, this
is set to a suitable 'echo' command to use within recipes. When we
are in silent mode then I use the 'true' command, while in verbose
mode we actually use 'echo'.
So, other than the issues outlined above, the output when building the
data-directory is now greatly reduced, and more inline with the output
when building in the gdb/ directory.
There should be no change in what is actually built after this commit.

Now, there exists syscalls/loongarch-linux.xml, let us set the correct
XML syscall filename for LoongArch, otherwise GDB won't be able to find
the correct XML file to open and get the syscalls definitions.
It should install the package expat-devel (a library for XML parsing)
and configure --with-expat (done by default if libexpat is installed
and found at configure time) for compiling gdb in this case.
Without this patch:
(gdb) catch syscall
warning: There is no XML file to open.
warning: GDB will not be able to display syscall names nor to verify if
any provided syscall numbers are valid.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

This commit builds on the previous commit, and implements the
extension_language_ops::handle_missing_debuginfo function for Python.
This hook will give user supplied Python code a chance to help find
missing debug information.
The implementation of the new hook is pretty minimal within GDB's C++
code; most of the work is out-sourced to a Python implementation which
is modelled heavily on how GDB's Python frame unwinders are
implemented.
The following new commands are added as commands implemented in
Python, this is similar to how the Python unwinder commands are
implemented:
info missing-debug-handlers
enable missing-debug-handler LOCUS HANDLER
disable missing-debug-handler LOCUS HANDLER

extension to locate the debug information for objfile and return a

for the objfile still couldn't be found. GDB will not call

containing the missing debug information. GDB will load
this file.
When a handler returns True, GDB will look again for the debug
information, but only using the standard built-in build-id and
.gnu_debuglink based lookup strategies. It is not possible for an
extension to trigger another debuginfod lookup; the assumption is that
the debuginfod server is remote, and out of the control of extensions
running within GDB.
Handlers can be registered globally, or per program space. GDB checks
the handlers for the current program space first, and then all of the
global handles. The first handler that returns a value that is not
None, has "handled" the objfile, at which point GDB continues.

It occurred to me recently that gdb's DAP implementation should
probably check the types of objects coming from the client. This
patch implements this idea by reusing Python's existing type
annotations, and supplying a decorator that verifies these at runtime.
Python doesn't make it very easy to do runtime type-checking, so the
core of the checker is written by hand. I haven't tried to make a
fully generic runtime type checker. Instead, this only checks the
subset that is needed by DAP. For example, only keyword-only
functions are handled.
Furthermore, in a few spots, it wasn't convenient to spell out the
type that is accepted. I've added a couple of comments to this effect
in breakpoint.py.
I've tried to make this code compatible with older versions of Python,
but I've only been able to try it with 3.9 and 3.10.

This implements the DAP loadedSources request, using gdb.execute_mi to
avoid having to write another custom Python API.

This adds the DAP readMemory and writeMemory requests. A small change
to the evaluation code is needed in order to test this -- this is one
of the few ways for a client to actually acquire a memory reference.

The DAP code already claimed to implement "scopes" and "evaluate", but
this wasn't done completely correctly. This patch implements these
and also implements the "variables" request.
After this patch, variables and scopes correctly report their
sub-structure. This also interfaces with the gdb pretty-printer API,
so the output of pretty-printers is available.

The Debugger Adapter Protocol is a JSON-RPC protocol that IDEs can use
to communicate with debuggers. You can find more information here:
https://microsoft.github.io/debug-adapter-protocol/
Frequently this is implemented as a shim, but it seemed to me that GDB
could implement it directly, via the Python API. This patch is the
initial implementation.
DAP is implemented as a new "interp". This is slightly weird, because
it doesn't act like an ordinary interpreter -- for example it doesn't
implement a command syntax, and doesn't use GDB's ordinary event loop.
However, this seemed like the best approach overall.
To run GDB in this mode, use:
gdb -i=dap
The DAP code will accept JSON-RPC messages on stdin and print
responses to stdout. GDB redirects the inferior's stdout to a new
pipe so that output can be encapsulated by the protocol.
The Python code uses multiple threads to do its work. Separate
threads are used for reading JSON from the client and for writing JSON
to the client. All GDB work is done in the main thread. (The first
implementation used asyncio, but this had some limitations, and so I
rewrote it to use threads instead.)
This is not a complete implementation of the protocol, but it does
implement enough to demonstrate that the overall approach works.
There is a rudimentary test suite. It uses a JSON parser written in
pure Tcl. This parser is under the same license as Tcl itself, so I
felt it was acceptable to simply import it into the tree.
There is also a bit of documentation -- just documenting the new
interpreter name.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

This commit extends the Python API to include disassembler support.
The motivation for this commit was to provide an API by which the user
could write Python scripts that would augment the output of the
disassembler.
To achieve this I have followed the model of the existing libopcodes
disassembler, that is, instructions are disassembled one by one. This
does restrict the type of things that it is possible to do from a
Python script, i.e. all additional output has to fit on a single line,
but this was all I needed, and creating something more complex would,
I think, require greater changes to how GDB's internal disassembler
operates.
The disassembler API is contained in the new gdb.disassembler module,
which defines the following classes:
DisassembleInfo
Similar to libopcodes disassemble_info structure, has read-only
properties: address, architecture, and progspace. And has methods:
__init__, read_memory, and is_valid.
Each time GDB wants an instruction disassembled, an instance of
this class is passed to a user written disassembler function, by
reading the properties, and calling the methods (and other support
methods in the gdb.disassembler module) the user can perform and
return the disassembly.
Disassembler
This is a base-class which user written disassemblers should
inherit from. This base class provides base implementations of
__init__ and __call__ which the user written disassembler should
override.
DisassemblerResult
This class can be used to hold the result of a call to the
disassembler, it's really just a wrapper around a string (the text
of the disassembled instruction) and a length (in bytes). The user
can return an instance of this class from Disassembler.__call__ to
represent the newly disassembled instruction.
The gdb.disassembler module also provides the following functions:
register_disassembler
This function registers an instance of a Disassembler sub-class
as a disassembler, either for one specific architecture, or, as a
global disassembler for all architectures.
builtin_disassemble
This provides access to GDB's builtin disassembler. A common
use case that I see is augmenting the existing disassembler output.
The user code can call this function to have GDB disassemble the
instruction in the normal way. The user gets back a
DisassemblerResult object, which they can then read in order to
augment the disassembler output in any way they wish.
This function also provides a mechanism to intercept the
disassemblers reads of memory, thus the user can adjust what GDB
sees when it is disassembling.
The included documentation provides a more detailed description of the
API.
There is also a new CLI command added:
maint info python-disassemblers
This command is defined in the Python gdb.disassemblers module, and
can be used to list the currently registered Python disassemblers.

This commit moves the two Python functions that are used for styling
into a new module, gdb.styling, there's then a small update in
python.c so GDB can find the functions in their new location.
The motivation for this change is purely to try and reduce the clutter
in the top-level gdb module, and encapsulate related functions into
modules. I did ponder documenting these functions as part of the
Python API, however, doing so would effectively "fix" the API, and I'm
still wondering if there's improvements that could be made, also, the
colorize function is only called in some cases now that GDB prefers
libsource-highlight, so it's not entirely sure how this would work as
part of a user facing API.
Still, despite these functions never having been part of a documented
API, it is possible that a user out there has overridden these to, in
some way, customize how GDB performs styling. Moving the function as
I propose in this patch could break things for that user, however,
fixing this breakage is trivial, and, as these functions were never
documented, I don't think we should be obliged to not break user code
that relies on them.

Oops, I botched the last patch to fix data-directory/Makefile
rebuilding, by copying the config.status line and forgetting to update
the directory name. This one fixes the problem for real.

All platforms on NetBSD use a shared system call table, so use a
single XML file to describe the system calls available on each NetBSD

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid

(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

Since we don't use suffix rules nor implicit rules in gdb, we can
disable them. The advantage is a slightly faster make [1].
Here are some numbers about the speedup. I ran this on my trusty old
Intel Q6600, so the time numbers are probably higher than what you'd get
on any recent hardware. I ran "make" in the gdb/ directory of an
already built repository (configured with --enable-targets=all). I
recorded the time of execution (average of 5). I then ran "make -d" and
recorded the number of printed lines, which gives a rough idea of the
number of operations done.
I compared the following configurations, to see the impact of both the
empty .SUFFIXES target and the empty pattern rules, as well as running
"make -r", which can be considered the "ideal" case.

D - baseline + .SUFFIXES + pattern rules

We can see that the empty .SUFFIXES target has a bigger impact than the
empty pattern rules, but still it doesn't hurt to disable the implicit
pattern rules as well.
There are still some mentions of implicit rules I can't get rid of in
the "make -d" output. For example, it's trying to build .c files from
.w files:

If somebody knows how to disable them, we can do it, but at this point
the returns are minimal, so it is not that important.
I verified that both in-tree and out-of-tree builds work.
[1] Switching from explicit rules to pattern rules for files in
subdirectories actually made it slower, so this is kind of a way to
redeem myself. But it the end it's faster than it was previously,
so it was all worth it. :)

I find the big file lists in the Makefiles a bit ugly and not very
practical. Since there are multiple filenames on each line (as much as
fits in 80 columns), it's not easy to add, remove or change a name in
the middle. As a result, we have a mix of long and short lines in no
particular order (ALL_TARGET_OBS is a good example).
I therefore suggest flattening the lists (one name per line) and keeping
them in alphabetical order. The diffs will be much clearer and merge
conflicts will be easier to resolve.
A nice (IMO) side-effect I observed is that the files are compiled
alphabetically by make, so it gives a rough idea of the progress of the
build.
I added a comment in gdb/Makefile.in to mention to keep the file lists
ordered, and gave the general guidelines on what order to respect. I
added a comment in other Makefiles which refers to gdb/Makefile.in, to
avoid duplication.
Running the patch through the buildbot found that gdb.base/default.exp
started to fail. The languages in the error message shown when typing
"set language" have changed order. We could probably improve gdb so
that it prints them in a stable order, regardless of the order of the
object list passed to the linked, but just fixing the test is easier for
now.
New in v2:
- Change ordering style, directories go at the end.
- Cleanup gdbserver's and data-directory's Makefile as well.
- Add comments at top of Makefiles about the ordering.
- Remove wrong trailing backslahes.
- Fix test gdb.base/default.exp.

This patch adds a bunch of generated files to gdb's gitignore files.
There are still a bunch of "stamp" files that are not ignored, but I
think the rule for them should be put in the top-level gitignore.
Users and developers are encouraged to build out-of-tree, but some
people prefer the simplicity to build in-tree, so it should be useful
for them.

Implement support to add catchpoints for a group of related syscalls
using the syntax:
(gdb) catch syscall group:<group>
or
(gdb) catch syscall g:<group>
Several groups are predefined in the xml files for all architectures
supported by GDB over Linux. They are based on the groups defined by
strace.

All platforms on FreeBSD use a shared system call table, so use a
single XML file to describe the system calls available on each FreeBSD
platform.
Recent versions of FreeBSD include the identifier of the current
system call when reporting a system call entry or exit event in the
ptrace_lwpinfo structure obtained via PT_LWPINFO in fbsd_wait. As
such, FreeBSD native targets do not use the gdbarch method to fetch
the system call code. In addition, FreeBSD register sets fetched via
ptrace do not include an equivalent of 'orig_rax' (on amd64 for
example), so the system call code cannot be extracted from the
available registers during a system call exit. However, GDB assumes
that system call catch points are not supported if the gdbarch method
is not present. As a workaround, FreeBSD ABIs install a dummy gdbarch
method that throws an internal_error if it is ever invoked.

This patch is a follow-up to "Add printf format specifier for printing
enumerator":

Instead of having a solution specific to the printf command, Pedro
suggested adding a general purpose function $_as_string() that would
cover this use case and more.
So, in order to print the textual label of an enum, one can use:

Tested with/without guile,python on amd64-linux.
I'm not sure we still have to deal with shells that can't
handle empty for lists, but I played it safe.
