2024-04-11Remove bfdwin.cAlan Modra1-2/+0
In commit b86d3af60ffc and 0ab0435fe672 I fixed SIGBUS errors found by oss-fuzz now that --with-mmap defaults to enabled. It turns out there are further problems with the aout mmap code: aout_read_minisymbols returns the external symbol array, which is later freed by nm.c. If the array is mmaped you can't free it. Now this could be fixed by making aout minisymbols an array of pointers, but I figure there's not much point in expending effort on that. So delete the aout mmap support along with bfdwin.c and get_section_contents_in_window.

2024-04-03elf: Use mmap to map in symbol and relocation tablesH.J. Lu1-0/+3
Add _bfd_mmap_read_temporary to mmap in symbol tables and relocations whose sizes >= 4 * page size. For the final link, allocate an external relocation buffer of 4 * page size to avoid using mmap and munmap on smaller relocation sections. 2024-04-03elf: Use mmap to map in read-only sectionsH.J. Lu1-0/+29
There are many linker input files in LLVM debug build with huge string sections. All these string sections can be treated as read-only. But linker copies all of them into memory which consumes huge amount of memory and slows down linker significantly. Add _bfd_mmap_readonly_persistent and _bfd_mmap_readonly_temporary to mmap in reado-only sections with size >= 4 * page size. NB: All string sections in valid ELF inputs must be null terminated. There is no need to terminate it again and string sections are mmapped as read-only. * bfd.c (bfd_mmapped_entry): New. (bfd_mmapped): Likewise. 2024-01-04Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

2023-08-09Rename bfd_bread and bfd_bwriteAlan Modra1-2/+2
These were renamed from bfd_read and bfd_write back in 2001 when they lost an unnecessary parameter. Rename them back, and get rid of a few casts that are only needed without prototyped functions (K&R C).
2023-06-09ecoff find_nearest_line and final link leaksAlan Modra1-0/+2
Freeing ecoff_debug_info "pointers to the unswapped symbolic info" isn't a simple matter, due to differing allocation strategies. In _bfd_ecoff_slurp_symbolic_info the pointers are to objalloc memory. In the ecoff linker they are to separately malloc'd memory. In gas we have most (obj-elf) or all (obj-ecoff) into a single malloc'd buffer. This patch fixes the leaks for binutils and ld, leaving the gas leaks for another day. The mips elf backend already had this covered, and the ecoff backend had a pointer, raw_syments used as a flag, so most of the patch is moving these around a little so they are accessible for both ecoff and elf. include/ * coff/ecoff.h (struct ecoff_debug_info): Add alloc_syments. bfd/ * libecoff.h (struct ecoff_tdata): Delete raw_syments. * elfxx-mips.c (free_ecoff_debug): Delete. 2023-06-07_bfd_free_cached_infoAlan Modra1-1/+1
doc/bfdint.texi and comments in the aout and som code about this function are just wrong, and its name is not very apt. Better would be _bfd_mostly_destroy, and we certainly should not be saying anything about the possibility of later recreating anything lost by this function. What's more, if _bfd_free_cached_info is called when creating an archive map to reduce memory usage by throwing away symbols, the target _close_and_cleanup function won't have access to tdata or section bfd_user_data to tidy memory. This means most of the target _close_and_cleanup function won't do anything, and therefore sometimes will result in memory leaks. This patch fixes the documentation problems and moves most of the target _close_and_cleanup code to target _bfd_free_cached_info. Another notable change is that bfd_generic_bfd_free_cached_info is now defined as _bfd_free_cached_info rather than _bfd_bool_bfd_true, ie. the default now frees objalloc memory.
2023-05-03Remove unused args from bfd_make_debug_symbolAlan Modra1-1/+1
The ptr and size args are unused. Make the function look the same as bfd_make_empty_symbol.
2023-05-03Generated docs and include filesAlan Modra1-61/+3
bfd/doc/chew.c extracts documentation from source code comments annotated with keywords, and generates much of bfd.h and libbfd.h from those same comments. The docs have suffered from people (me too) adding things like CODE_FRAGMENT to the source to put code into bfd.h without realising that CODE_FRAGMENT also puts @example around said code into the docs. So we have random senseless things in the docs. This patch fixes that problem (well, the senseless things from CODE_FRAGMENT), moves most of the code out of bfd-in.h, and improves a few chew.c features. libbfd.h now automatically gets ATTRIBUTE_HIDDEN prototypes, and indentation in bfd.h and libbfd.h is better.

2023-04-28Re: Keeping track of rs6000-coff archive element pointersAlan Modra1-1/+1
Commit de7b90610e9e left a hole in the element checking, explained by the comment added to _bfd_xcoff_openr_next_archived_file. While fixing this, tidy some types used to hold unsigned values so that casts are not needed to avoid signed/unsigned comparison warnings. 2022-09-26stab nearest_line bfd_malloc_and_get_sectionAlan Modra1-0/+3

2022-09-06bfd: Add bfd_find_nearest_line_with_altAaron Merey1-0/+11
bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt functions like bfd_find_nearest_line with the addition of a parameter for specifying the filename of a supplementary debug file such as one referenced by .gnu_debugaltlink or .debug_sup. This patch focuses on implementing bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt support for ELF/DWARF2 .gnu_debugaltlink. For other targets this function simply sets the invalid_operation bfd_error.

2021-05-22bfd dwarf2 sanity checkingAlan Modra1-2/+1
This patch is aimed at the many places in dwarf2.c that blindly increment a data pointer after calling functions that are meant to read a fixed number of bytes. The problem with that is with damaged dwarf we might increment a data pointer past the end of data, which is UB and complicates (ie. bugs likely) any further use of that data pointer. To fix those problems, I've moved incrementing of the data pointer into the functions that do the reads. _bfd_safe_read_leb128 gets the same treatment for consistency. * libbfd.c (_bfd_safe_read_leb128): Remove length_return parameter. Replace data pointer with pointer to pointer. Increment pointer over bytes read. * libbfd-in.h (_bfd_safe_read_leb128): Update prototype. * elf-attrs.c (_bfd_elf_parse_attributes): Adjust to suit. 2021-03-05elf/x86-64: Subtract __ImageBase for R_AMD64_IMAGEBASEH.J. Lu1-0/+2
When linking Windows x86-64 relocatable object files to generate x86-64 ELF executable, we need to subtract __ImageBase, aka __executable_start, for R_AMD64_IMAGEBASE relocation: 1. Add link_info to struct output_elf_obj_tdata to store linker info and _bfd_get_link_info() to retrieve it. 2. Add ldelf_set_output_arch to set up link_info. 3. Add pex64_link_add_symbols to create an indirect reference to __executable_start for __ImageBase to support R_AMD64_IMAGEBASE relocation when adding symbols from Windows x86-64 relocatable object files to generate x86-64 ELF executable. 4. 2020-03-02bfd_cleanup for object_pAlan Modra1-4/+5
The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the target that allocated the memory. It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed. In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. The only cleanup that does anything at this stage is the alpha-vms one. bfd/ * targets.c (bfd_cleanup): New typedef. 2019-11-27PR23652, Use symbols from debug bfd for _bfd_elf_find_function properlyAlan Modra1-1/+1
There were a number of problems with the previous patch. Firstly, _bfd_dwarf2_stash_syms didn't do anything when the original file had dynamic symbols, and secondly, info found by the symbol search didn't make it out of _bfd_elf_find_nearest_line except in the case of DWARF functions without external linkage. 2018-10-13_bfd_clear_contents bounds checkingAlan Modra1-2/+2
This PR shows a fuzzed binary triggering a segfault via a bad relocation in .debug_line. It turns out that unlike normal relocations applied to a section, the linker applies those with symbols from discarded sections via _bfd_clear_contents without checking that the relocation is within the section bounds. The same thing now happens when reading debug sections since commit a4cd947aca23, the PR23425 fix. PR 23770 PR 23425 * reloc.c (_bfd_clear_contents): Replace "location" param with "buf" and "off". 2018-07-02Allow BFD to recognize macOS universal librariesTom Tromey1-0/+1
Bug #13157 is about a gdb regression, where previously it could handle universal libraries, but now cannot. gdb isn't working for me on macOS for other reasons, so I wrote this small test program to show the problem: #include <config.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <bfd.h> void die (const char *what) { fprintf (stderr, "die: %s\n", what); exit (1); } int main (int argc, char **argv) { bfd *file = bfd_openr (argv[1], NULL); if (file == NULL) die ("couldn't open"); if (!bfd_check_format (file, bfd_archive)) die ("not an archive"); printf ("yay\n"); bfd_close (file); return 0; } Then I built a simple universal binary. With git master BFD, I get: $ ./doit ./universal-exe die: not an archive Jeff Muizelaar tracked this down to the BFD change for PR binutils/21787. This patch changed bfd_generic_archive_p to sometimes reset the BFD's "format" field. However, simply changing bfd_generic_archive_p regressed the test case in that bug. Debugging PR binutils/21787 again, what I saw is that the mach-o universal binary support acts like a bfd_archive but does not provide a _close_and_cleanup function. However, if a BFD appears as an archive member, it must always remove its own entry from its parent's map. Otherwise, when the parent is destroyed, the already-destroyed child BFD will be referenced. mach-o does not use the usual archive member support, so simply using _bfd_archive_close_and_cleanup (as other targets do) will not work. This patch fixes the problem by introducing a new _bfd_unlink_from_archive_parent function, then arranging for it to be called in the mach-o case. Ok? bfd/ChangeLog 2018-07-02 Jeff Muizelaar <jrmuizel@gmail.com> Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> PR 13157 PR 21787 * mach-o.c (bfd_mach_o_fat_close_and_cleanup): New function.
