2023-12-23Remove `get_buildtype_args` functionCharles Brunet1-13/+1
This is a first step to make `buildtype` a true alias of `debug` and `optimization` options. See #10808. Relates to: - #11645 - #12096 - #5920 - #5814 - #8220 - #8493 - #9540 - #10487 - #12265 - #8308 - #8214 - #7194 - #11732
2023-12-13Use SPDX-License-Identifier consistentlyDylan Baker1-11/+1
This replaces all of the Apache blurbs at the start of each file with an `# SPDX-License-Identifier: Apache-2.0` string. It also fixes existing uses to be consistent in capitalization, and to be placed above any copyright notices. This removes nearly 3000 lines of boilerplate from the project (only python files), which no developer cares to look at. SPDX is in common use, particularly in the Linux kernel, and is the recommended format for Meson's own `project(license: )` field
2023-11-26fix broken type annotation imports being ignoredEli Schwartz1-1/+1
If an annotation could not be resolved, it's classified as a "missing import" and our configuration ignored it: ``` Skipping analyzing "mesonbuild.backends": module is installed, but missing library stubs or py.typed marker ``` As far as mypy is concerned, this library may or may not exist, but it doesn't have any typing information at all (may need to be installed first). We ignored this because of our docs/ and tools/ thirdparty dependencies, but we really should not. It is trivial to install them, and then enforce that this "just works". By enforcing it, we also make sure typos get caught.

2022-11-27Add warning_level=everythingDavid Robillard1-1/+2
Adds a new maximum warning level that is roughly equivalent to "all warnings". This adds a way to use `/Wall` with MSVC (without the previous broken warning), `-Weverything` with clang, and almost all general warnings in GCC with strictness roughly equivalent to clang's `-Weverything`. The GCC case must be implemented by meson since GCC doesn't provide a similar option. To avoid maintenance headaches for meson, this warning level is defined objectively: all warnings are included except those that require specific values or are specific to particular language revisions. This warning level is mainly intended for new code, and it is expected (nearly guaranteed) that projects will need to add some suppressions to build cleanly with it. More commonly, it's just a handy way to occasionally take a look at what warnings are present with some compiler, in case anything interesting shows up you might want to enable in general. Since the warnings enabled at this level are inherently unstable with respect to compiler versions, it is intended for use by developers and not to be set as the default.
2022-10-09compilers: Add optimization=plain optionJan Tojnar1-0/+1
https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/pull/9287 changed the `optimization=0` to pass `-O0` to the compiler. This change is reasonable by itself but unfortunately, it breaks `buildtype=plain`, which promises that ā€œno extra build flags are usedā€. `buildtype=plain` is important for distros like NixOS, which manage compiler flags for optimization and hardening themselves. Let’s introduce a new optimization level that does nothing and set it as the default for `buildtype=plain`.
2022-08-24fix linker regression for compilers that don't accept LDFLAGS directlyEli Schwartz1-1/+4
e.g. ldc -- the compiler needs to process args before consuming them. Fixes #10693
2022-04-13compilers: fix broken CompCert support for release flagsEli Schwartz1-1/+1
This has been broken ever since the original implementation. Due to a typo, the optimization flag used a zero instead of an uppercase "o", which the compiler then breaks on during argument parsing because it is an invalid argument. Fixes #10267
2022-01-10compilers: push the compiler id to a class variableDylan Baker1-1/+2
It really is a per class value, and shouldn't be set per instance. It also allows us to get rid of useless constructors, including those breaking mypy
2020-10-01compilers: move get_dependency_gen_args to base CompilerDylan Baker1-4/+0
So that every subclass doesn't have to reimplement it. Especially since the Gnu implementation moved out of the CCompiler and into the GnuLikeCompiler mixin
2020-10-01compilers: fully type annotate the C compilersDylan Baker1-1/+1
2020-09-24compilers: Tell mypy that the compiler mixins are just thatDylan Baker1-4/+8
We do this by making the mixins inherit the Compiler class only when mypy is examining the code (using some clever inheritance shenanigans). This caught a bunch of issues, and also lets us delete a ton of code.

2020-09-15Add support for the CompCert C CompilerSebastian Meyer1-0/+127
* Add preliminary support for the CompCert C Compiler The intention is to use this with the picolibc, so some GCC flags are automatically filtered. Since CompCert uses GCC is for linking, those GCC-linker flags which are used by picolibc, are automatically prefixed with '-WUl', so that they're passed to GCC. Instead the meson.build should take care to select only those which are actually supported by the compiler. * remove unused variable * Only add arguments once. * Apply suggestions from code review Co-authored-by: Dylan Baker <dylan@pnwbakers.com> * Remove erroneous ' ' from '-o {}'.format() As noticed by @dcbaker * added release note snippet for compcert * properly split parameters As suggested by @dcbaker, these parameters should be properly split into multiple strings. Co-authored-by: Dylan Baker <dylan@pnwbakers.com> * Update add_compcert_compiler.md Added a sentence about the state of the implementation (experimental); use proper markdown * properly separate arguments Co-authored-by: Dylan Baker <dylan@pnwbakers.com>
