2024-09-19ld: Move the .note.build-id section to near the start of the memory map.Nick Clifton1-2/+37
This helps GDB to locate the debug information associated with a core dump. Core dumps include the first page of an executable's image, and if this page include the .note.build-id section then GDB can find it and then track down a debug info file for that build-id.
2024-06-18Ensure that the text segment is aligned on disk when using --rosegment.Nick Clifton1-1/+1

2024-04-01hppa: Implement PA 2.0 symbolic relocations for long displacementsJohn David Anglin1-1/+1
The PA 2.0 architecture introduced several new load and store instructions with long displacements. These include floating point loads and stores for word mode, and integer and floating point loads and stores for double words. Currently, ld does not correctly support symbolic relocations for these instructions. If these are used, ld applies the standard R_PARISC_DPREL14R relocation and corrupts the instruction. This change uses bfd_hppa_insn2fmt to determine the correct relocation format. We need to check the computed displacement as the immediate value used in these instruction must be a multiple of 4 or 8 depending on whether the access is for a word or double word. A misaligned offset can potentially occur if the symbol is not properly aligned or if $global$ (the global pointer) is not double word aligned. $global$ is provided as a .data section start symbol. The patch adjusts elf.sc and hppalinux.sh to align .data to a 8-byte boundary in non-shared and non-pie links. 2024-04-01 John David Anglin <danglin@gcc.gnu.org> PR ld/31503 bfd/ChangeLog: * elf32-hppa.c (final_link_relocate): Output ld/ChangeLog: * emulparams/hppalinux.sh (DATA_SECTION_ALIGNMENT): Define. * scripttempl/elf.sc: Align .data section to DATA_SECTION_ALIGNMENT when relocating.
2024-01-04Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-2/+2
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

2023-07-17Support NEXT_SECTION in ALIGNOF and SIZEOFAlan Modra1-1/+1
This patch is aimed at making __bss_start properly aligned with the first of any bss-style sections following. Most of the work here involves keeping track of the last output section seen when processing the linker script. You can almost align __bss_start properly by using ${RELOCATING+. = ALIGN(${DATA_SDATA-${NO_SMALL_DATA-ALIGNOF(.${SBSS_NAME}) != 0 ? ALIGNOF(.${SBSS_NAME}) : }}${BSS_PLT+ALIGNOF(.plt) != 0 ? ALIGNOF(.plt) : }ALIGNOF(.${BSS_NAME}));} and changing every place that defines NO_SMALL_DATA to use " ", but having two .plt sections (marked SPECIAL) on some backends foils that idea. The problem is that you only want to pick up the following .plt, not the one preceeding __bss_start in the data segment if the backend decides that is the proper .plt section. Perhaps that could be fixed too, but I decided instead to extend the linker script a little. THIS_SECTION and PREV_SECTION could easily be added too. * ld.texi (ALIGNOF, SIZEOF): Update and mention NEXT_SECTION. * ldexp.c (output_section_find): New function. 2023-07-12.noinit and .persistent alignmentAlan Modra1-4/+2
It's more elegant to make the section match up with its "_start" symbol. We could align by setting the address of the section (by using ALIGN before the colon), but this way we also set sh_addralign to at least $ALIGNMENT. * scripttempl/elf.sc (.noinit, .persistent): Align the output section rather than using ". = ALIGN();" at the beginning. Set address to zero when not a final link.
2023-07-12Re: Align linkerscript symbols according to ABIAlan Modra1-1/+2
Align dot before symbols defined outside of output sections. Before _end is already aligned. * scripttempl/elf.sc (def_symbol): Tidy excess space. (_edata): Align before emitting symbol when SYMBOL_ABI_ALIGNMENT.

2023-03-16Re: Add --enable-linker-verssionAlan Modra1-3/+2
Output sections without any input sections to initialise their flags have their flags initialised by data statements to LOAD, ALLOC, HAS_CONTENTS by default. This is wrong for .comment. Fix that by making the script initialise the section type to INFO, one of the noalloc section types. That also allows the address of .comment to be set to zero, as is usual for non-alloc sections. Also, use source_sh for all of the sourced scripts to set up make dependencies. 2023-01-01Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-2/+2
The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.
2022-11-15bfd: linker: merge .sframe sectionsIndu Bhagat1-0/+2
The linker merges all the input .sframe sections. When merging, the linker verifies that all the input .sframe sections have the same abi/arch. The linker uses libsframe library to perform key actions on the .sframe sections - decode, read, and create output data. This implies buildsystem changes to make and install libsframe before libbfd. The linker places the output .sframe section in a new segment of its own: PT_GNU_SFRAME. A new segment is not added, however, if the generated .sframe section is empty. When a section is discarded from the final link, the corresponding entries in the .sframe section for those functions are also deleted. The linker sorts the SFrame FDEs on start address by default and sets the SFRAME_F_FDE_SORTED flag in the .sframe section. This patch also adds support for generation of SFrame unwind information for the .plt* sections on x86_64. SFrame unwind info is generated for IBT enabled PLT, lazy/non-lazy PLT. The existing linker option --no-ld-generated-unwind-info has been adapted to include the control of whether .sframe unwind information will be generated for the linker generated sections like PLT. DT_RELR is implemented with the linker relaxation infrastructure, but it doesn't require the --relax option enabled. -z pack-relative-relocs implies -z combreloc. -z nocombreloc implies -z nopack-relative-relocs. -z pack-relative-relocs is chosen over the similar option in lld, --pack-dyn-relocs=relr, to implement a glibc binary lockout mechanism with a special glibc version symbol, to avoid random crashes of DT_RELR binaries with the existing glibc binaries. bfd/ * elf-bfd.h (elf_link_hash_table): Add srelrdyn. * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_link_create_dynamic_sections): Create a .relr.dyn section for DT_RELR. include/ * bfdlink.h (bfd_link_info): Add enable_dt_relr. ld/ * News: Mention -z pack-relative-relocs and -z nopack-relative-relocs. * ld.texi: Document -z pack-relative-relocs and -z nopack-relative-relocs. * ldelf.c (ldelf_after_parse): Disable DT_RELR if not building PIE nor shared library. 2020-11-27ELF: Support .noinit and .persistent sectionsJozef Lawrynowicz1-0/+28
The ".persistent" section is for data that should be initialized during load, but not during application reset. The ".noinit" section is for data that should not be initialized during load or application reset. Targets utilizing the elf.sc linker script template can define HAVE_{NOINIT,PERSISTENT}=yes to include the .noinit or .persistent output sections in the generated linker script. Targets with existing support for .noinit did not handle unique .noinit.* and .gnu.linkonce.n.* sections the .noinit output section, this patch also fixes that. bfd/ChangeLog: * elf.c (special_sections_g): Add .gnu.linkonce.n and .gnu.linkonce.p. 2020-07-19ld: optionally emit _etext last, before .dataHans-Peter Nilsson1-3/+10
So, here's my suggestion for making _init .. __etext cover .text + .rodata (including things like the read-only exception tables) for elf64mmix. A quick web search gives that __etext (and friends) isn't well defined, so each target can interpret the "end of text segment" to their own liking. It seems likely this change is also a better fit than the default for other ports, at least those with .rodata after .text in the same segment. The presence of a separate rodata-segment is optional (and not true for elf64mmix). This is reflected in the name as SEPARATE_TEXT / SEPARATE_CODE isn't considered, to keep it simple; each target has to make sure their settings of variables make sense. ld: * scripttempl/elf.sc (ETEXT_LAST_IN_RODATA_SEGMENT): New variable. * emulparams/elf64mmix.sh (ETEXT_LAST_IN_RODATA_SEGMENT): Define. * testsuite/ld-mmix/sec-1.d: Adjust.

2018-10-29ld -r script fixesAlan Modra1-2/+2
For ld -r, we generally set the VMA of sections to zero. This is done to make the output of ld -r most similar to that output by the assembler, which generally has sections starting at VMA zero. In some cases that covers for backend bugs which would mis-handle relocatable object files with non-zero section VMAs. This patch fixes a few sections that didn't have zero VMAs for ld -r. A missing zero on .note.gnu.build-id and .eh_frame_hdr doesn't matter much since these are linker generated symbols only output on final link, but it's good to be consistent. * Makefile.am (ei386beos.c, ei386go32.c): Correct dependencies. * Makefile.in: Regenerate. * scripttempl/elf.sc (.note.gnu.build-id, .eh_frame_hdr): Set address with ${RELOCATING-0}. * scripttempl/arclinux.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/armbpabi.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/avr.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/elf64hppa.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/elf_chaos.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/elfarc.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/elfxtensa.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/mep.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/nds32elf.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/pru.sc: Likewise. * scripttempl/elf32msp430.sc: Likewise, and for other sections. * scripttempl/epiphany_4x4.sc: Similarly.
2018-10-13ELF ld -r scriptsAlan Modra1-45/+43
"ld -r" generally should not combine object file sections with different names. For example, "ld -r" should not combine ".text", ".text.hot" and ".text.cold" into an output ".text" section. An exception needs to be made for linker created sections, for example, branch trampoline sections that might be created even for ld -r. "ld -r" also should not define symbols in linker scripts. Any definitions are likely to conflict with those defined at final link. A MEMORY spec is also not needed for ld -r. * Makefile.am (eelf32btsmip_fbsd.c, eelf32btsmipn32_fbsd.c), (eelf32epiphany.c, eelf32epiphany_4x4.c, eelf32ltsmip_fbsd.c), (eelf32ltsmipn32_fbsd.c, eelf32xc16x.c, eelf32xc16xl.c), (eelf32xc16xs.c, emcorepe.c, enios2elf.c, enios2linux.c), (eelf64btsmip_fbsd.c, eelf64ltsmip_fbsd.c): Correct dependencies. * Makefile.in: Regenerate. * emulparams/aarch64cloudabi.sh, * emulparams/aarch64fbsd.sh, * emulparams/aarch64linux.sh, * emulparams/aarch64linux32.sh, * emulparams/arc-nps.sh, * emulparams/elf32_spu.sh, * emulparams/elf32_tic6x_le.sh, * emulparams/elf32bmip.sh, * emulparams/elf32btsmipn32.sh, * emulparams/elf32lr5900n32.sh, * emulparams/elf32mep.sh, * emulparams/elf32metag.sh, * emulparams/elf64btsmip.sh, * emulparams/shelf_vxworks.sh, * emulparams/shlelf_fd.sh, * scripttempl/DWARF.sc, * scripttempl/alpha.sc, * scripttempl/alphavms.sc, * scripttempl/arclinux.sc, * scripttempl/armbpabi.sc, * scripttempl/avr.sc, * scripttempl/dlx.sc, * scripttempl/elf.sc, * scripttempl/elf32cr16.sc, * scripttempl/elf32cr16c.sc, * scripttempl/elf32crx.sc, * scripttempl/elf32msp430.sc, * scripttempl/elf32msp430_3.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16x.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16xl.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16xs.sc, * scripttempl/elf64hppa.sc, * scripttempl/elf_chaos.sc, * scripttempl/elfarc.sc, * scripttempl/elfarcv2.sc, * scripttempl/elfd10v.sc, * scripttempl/elfd30v.sc, * scripttempl/elfm68hc11.sc, * scripttempl/elfm68hc12.sc, * scripttempl/elfm9s12z.sc, * scripttempl/elfmicroblaze.sc, * scripttempl/elfxgate.sc, * scripttempl/elfxtensa.sc, * scripttempl/epiphany_4x4.sc, * scripttempl/ft32.sc, * scripttempl/hppaelf.sc, * scripttempl/ia64vms.sc, * scripttempl/ip2k.sc, * scripttempl/iq2000.sc, * scripttempl/mep.sc, * scripttempl/mmo.sc, * scripttempl/nds32elf.sc, * scripttempl/pru.sc, * scripttempl/sh.sc, * scripttempl/v850.sc, * scripttempl/v850_rh850.sc, * scripttempl/visium.sc, * scripttempl/xstormy16.sc: Condition various parts of scripts on ${RELOCATABLE} in order to prevent ld -r merging sections or defining symbols. 2018-06-08Define various symbols conditionally in shared librariesAlan Modra1-4/+4
The values of symbols in shared libraries like _end, _edata, and __bss_start are generally not that useful outside of the shared library. This patch defines them conditionally with PROVIDE, since a shared library might need the local value. An example is glibc ld.so local access to "_begin", "_etext" and "_end". (ld.so gains access to the local values by making the references using hidden visibility. That makes the definitions hidden too.) We can't use PROVIDE_HIDDEN in the linker scripts because the shared library might need the value of the symbol in the executable. An example is freebsd libc dynamic access to "_end". 2018-04-25[ARM] Add TLS relocations for FDPIC.Christophe Lyon1-1/+5
Define and handle TLS relocations for FDPIC in BFD and gas. In gas, the new relocations are rejected if the --fdpic option was not specified. We also define the __tdata_start symbol to mark the start of the .tdata section. This allows FDPIC static binaries to find the start of .tdata section, since phdr->p_vaddr of TLS segment is not a valid value for FDPIC. 2018-04-25 Christophe Lyon <christophe.lyon@st.com> Mickaël Guêné <mickael.guene@st.com> bfd/: * bfd-in2.h (BFD_RELOC_ARM_TLS_GD32_FDPIC) (BFD_RELOC_ARM_TLS_LDM32_FDPIC, BFD_RELOC_ARM_TLS_IE32_FDPIC): New relocations. * elf32-arm.c (elf32_arm_howto_table_2): Add R_ARM_TLS_GD32_FDPIC, R_ARM_TLS_LDM32_FDPIC, R_ARM_TLS_IE32_FDPIC relocations. 2015-04-01Start of relro segment adjustmentAlan Modra1-1/+5
Adjusting the start of the relro segment in order to make it end exactly on a page boundary runs into difficulties when sections in the relro segment are aligned; Adjusting the start by (next_page - end) sometimes results in more than that adjustment occurring at the end, overrunning the page boundary. So when that occurs we try a new lower start position by masking the adjusted start with the maximum section alignment. However, we didn't consider that this masked start address may in fact be before the initial relro base, which is silly since that can only increase padding at the relro end. I've also moved some calculations closer to where they are used, and comments closer to the relevant statements. * ldlang.c (lang_size_sections): When alignment of sections results in relro base adjustment being too large, don't go lower than the initial value. * ldexp.c (fold_binary <DATA_SEGMENT_RELRO_END>): Comment. * scripttempl/elf.sc (DATA_SEGMENT_ALIGN): Omit SEGMENT_SIZE alignment when SEGMENT_SIZE is the same as MAXPAGESIZE.
2015-01-20Reorder more powerpc64 sections again for -z relroAlan Modra1-1/+2
.toc1 is the second level TOC section used by gcc's -mminimal-toc. It too should be read-only after relocation. Also, the last patch description mentioned .sbss moving but didn't actually do that, so fix that problem. .tocbss (whatever that is) was before .sbss previously, so move that one too. * emulparams/elf64ppc.sh (OTHER_SDATA_SECTIONS): Use in place of.. This moves .got too, which requires .sdata and .sbss to move with it, because these sections share addressing via the toc pointer and with small-model code must be within a 16-bit signed offset. .plt, .iplt and .branch_lt must also be moved since they are addressed via a 32-bit offset from the toc pointer, and we might have a very large .data section. This change means we may have some bss style sections before the data segment, necessitating another PT_LOAD header. Also, since _edata is defined at the end of the data segment it's possible with an empty .data to have _edata at the end of .plt which looks a little unusual since .plt is a bss style section. That should only happen rarely in real world binaries, but does occur in the ld testsuite. ld/ * emulparams/elf64ppc.sh (BSS_PLT): Don't define. (OTHER_READWRITE_SECTIONS): Move .branch_lt to..
