2024-02-20gdb: pass frames as `const frame_info_ptr &`Simon Marchi1-1/+1
We currently pass frames to function by value, as `frame_info_ptr`. This is somewhat expensive: - the size of `frame_info_ptr` is 64 bytes, which is a bit big to pass by value - the constructors and destructor link/unlink the object in the global `frame_info_ptr::frame_list` list. This is an `intrusive_list`, so it's not so bad: it's just assigning a few points, there's no memory allocation as if it was `std::list`, but still it's useless to do that over and over. As suggested by Tom Tromey, change many function signatures to accept `const frame_info_ptr &` instead of `frame_info_ptr`. Some functions reassign their `frame_info_ptr` parameter, like: void the_func (frame_info_ptr frame) { for (; frame != nullptr; frame = get_prev_frame (frame)) { ... } } I wondered what to do about them, do I leave them as-is or change them (and need to introduce a separate local variable that can be re-assigned). I opted for the later for consistency. It might not be clear why some functions take `const frame_info_ptr &` while others take `frame_info_ptr`. Also, if a function took a `frame_info_ptr` because it did re-assign its parameter, I doubt that we would think to change it to `const frame_info_ptr &` should the implementation change such that it doesn't need to take `frame_info_ptr` anymore. It seems better to have a simple rule and apply it everywhere. Change-Id: I59d10addef687d157f82ccf4d54f5dde9a963fd0 Approved-By: Andrew Burgess <aburgess@redhat.com>
2024-01-12Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDBAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.
2023-01-05gdb: make gdbarch_alloc take ownership of the tdepSimon Marchi1-0/+2
It's currently not clear how the ownership of gdbarch_tdep objects works. In fact, nothing ever takes ownership of it. This is mostly fine because we never free gdbarch objects, and thus we never free gdbarch_tdep objects. There is an exception to that however: when initialization fails, we do free the gdbarch object that is not going to be used, and we free the tdep too. Currently, i386 and s390 do it. To make things clearer, change gdbarch_alloc so that it takes ownership of the tdep. The tdep is thus automatically freed if the gdbarch is freed. Change all gdbarch initialization functions to pass a new gdbarch_tdep object to gdbarch_alloc and then retrieve a non-owning reference from the gdbarch object. Before this patch, the xtensa architecture had a single global instance of xtensa_gdbarch_tdep. Since we need to pass a dynamically allocated gdbarch_tdep_base instance to gdbarch_alloc, remove this global instance, and dynamically allocate one as needed, like we do for all other architectures. Make the `rmap` array externally visible and rename it to the less collision-prone `xtensa_rmap` name. 2023-01-01Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDBJoel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script, which automated the update of the copyright year range for all source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include year 2023.
2022-10-10Change GDB to use frame_info_ptrTom Tromey1-1/+1
This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info * The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands: sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/' sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some issues in a few files, that were manually fixed. sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace problems. The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what made sense, and what Tromey originally did Co-Authored-By: Bruno Larsen <blarsen@redhat.com> Approved-by: Tom Tomey <tom@tromey.com>
2022-09-29Constify target_desc declarationsKeith Seitz1-2/+2
This patch changes various global target_desc declarations to const, thereby correcting a prominent source of ODR violations in PowerPC-related target code. The majority of files/changes are mechanical const-ifications accomplished by regenerating the C files in features/. This also required manually updating mips-linux-tdep.h, s390-linux-tdep.h, nios2-tdep.h, s390-tdep.h, arch/ppc-linux-tdesc.h, arch/ppc-linux-common.c, and rs6000-tdep.c. Patch tested against the sourceware trybot, and fully regression tested against our (Red Hat's) internal test infrastructure on Rawhide aarch64, s390x, x86_64, and powerpcle. With this patch, I can finally enable LTO in our GDB package builds. [Tested with a rawhide scratch build containing this patch.] Bug: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=22395 Bug: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=24835
2022-07-26gdb: rename gdbarch_tdep struct to fix g++ 4.8 buildAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
After the commit: commit 08106042d9f5fdff60c129bf33190639f1a98b2a Date: Thu May 19 13:20:17 2022 +0100 gdb: move the type cast into gdbarch_tdep GDB would no longer build using g++ 4.8. The issue appears to be some confusion caused by GDB having 'struct gdbarch_tdep', but also a templated function called 'gdbarch_tdep'. Prior to the above commit the gdbarch_tdep function was not templated, and this compiled just fine. Note that the above commit compiles just fine with later versions of g++, so this issue was clearly fixed at some point, though I've not tried to track down exactly when. In this commit I propose to fix the g++ 4.8 build problem by renaming 'struct gdbarch_tdep' to 'struct gdbarch_tdep_base'. This rename better represents that the struct is only ever used as a base class, and removes the overloading of the name, which allows GDB to build with g++ 4.8. I've also updated the comment on 'struct gdbarch_tdep_base' to fix a typo, and the comment on the 'gdbarch_tdep' function, to mention that in maintainer mode a run-time type check is performed.

2021-11-18gdb: include gdbarch.h in all files extending gdbarch_tdepSimon Marchi1-0/+1
Commit 345bd07cce33 ("gdb: fix gdbarch_tdep ODR violation") made a bunch of files define a *_gdbarch_tdep class that inherits from a gdbarch_tdep base. But some of these files don't include gdbarch.h, where gdbarch_tdep is defined. This may cause build errors if gdbarch.h isn't already included by chance by some other header file. Avoid this by making them include gdbarch.h. Change-Id: If433d302007e274daa4f656cfc94f769cf1aa68a
2021-11-15gdb: fix gdbarch_tdep ODR violationSimon Marchi1-16/+17
I would like to be able to use non-trivial types in gdbarch_tdep types. This is not possible at the moment (in theory), because of the one definition rule. To allow it, rename all gdbarch_tdep types to <arch>_gdbarch_tdep, and make them inherit from a gdbarch_tdep base class. The inheritance is necessary to be able to pass pointers to all these <arch>_gdbarch_tdep objects to gdbarch_alloc, which takes a pointer to gdbarch_tdep. These objects are never deleted through a base class pointer, so I didn't include a virtual destructor. In the future, if gdbarch objects deletable, I could imagine that the gdbarch_tdep objects could become owned by the gdbarch objects, and then it would become useful to have a virtual destructor (so that the gdbarch object can delete the owned gdbarch_tdep object). But that's not necessary right now. It turns out that RISC-V already has a gdbarch_tdep that is non-default-constructible, so that provides a good motivation for this change. Most changes are fairly straightforward, mostly needing to add some casts all over the place. There is however the xtensa architecture, doing its own little weird thing to define its gdbarch_tdep. I did my best to adapt it, but I can't test those changes. Change-Id: Ic001903f91ddd106bd6ca09a79dabe8df2d69f3b

2020-12-06s390: Fix BC instruction breakpoint handlingGiancarlo Frix1-1/+1
This fixes a long-lived bug in the s390 port. When trying to step over a breakpoint set on a BC (branch on condition) instruction with displaced stepping on IBM Z, gdb would incorrectly adjust the pc regardless of whether or not the branch was taken. Since the branch target is an absolute address, this would cause the inferior to jump around wildly whenever the branch was taken, either crashing it or causing it to behave unpredictably. It turns out that the logic to handle BC instructions correctly was in the code, but that the enum value representing its opcode has always been incorrect. This patch corrects the enum value to the actual opcode, fixing the stepping problem. The enum value is also used in the prologue analysis code, so this also fixes a minor bug where more of the prologue would be read than was necessary. gdb/ChangeLog: PR breakpoints/27009 * s390-tdep.h (op_bc): Correct BC opcode value.

2019-01-01Update copyright year range in all GDB files.Joel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-01-30s390: Fix gdb.base/all-architectures.exp with --enable-targets=allPhilipp Rudo1-0/+3
With 7042632bf79 (s390: Hook s390 into OSABI mechanism) assigning a default target description was moved from s390_gdbarch_init to s390_linux_init_abi_*. This causes problems when GDB is built with --enable-targets=all and the user sets an unsupported OSABI, e.g. "set osabi AIX". In this case there is no valid tdesc, and GDB crashes with an internal error. Fix this by reverting parts of 7042632bf79. gdb/ChangeLog: * s390-linux-tdep.c: Remove includes "features/s390-linux32.c" and "features/s390x-linux64.c". 2018-01-23s390: Split up s390-linux-tdep.c into two filesPhilipp Rudo1-0/+318
Currently all target dependent code for s390 is in one file, s390-linux-tdep.c. This includes code general for the architecture as well as code specific for uses in GNU/Linux (user space). Up until now this was OK as GNU/Linux was the only supported OS. In preparation to support the new Linux kernel 'OS' split up the existing s390 code into a general s390-tdep and a GNU/Linux-specific s390-linux-tdep. Note: The record-replay feature will be moved in a separate patch. This is simply due to the fact that the combined patch would be too large for the mailing list. This requires setting the process_record hook during OSABI init to keep the code bisectable. The patch moving record-replay cleans up this hack. gdb/ChangeLog: * s390-linux-nat.c (s390-tdep.h): New include. * Makefile.in (ALL_TARGET_OBS): Add s390-tdep.o. (HFILES_NO_SRCDIR): Add s390-tdep.h. 2013-10-30S/390: Rename source files to *-linux-*Ulrich Weigand1-177/+0
As suggested before, rename the S/390-related source files (tdep and nat) such that "-linux-" occurs in the file name, like with other GNU/Linux targets. Since no other operating system is currently supported by GDB on this architecture, this isn't strictly necessary. But the old names sometimes caused GDB contributors to miss these files when performing a change that affects all GNU/Linux targets. The latest such incident was observed here: https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2013-09/msg00619.html gdb/ 2013-10-30 Andreas Arnez <arnez@linux.vnet.ibm.com> * s390-tdep.h: Rename to... * s390-linux-tdep.h: ...here. * s390-tdep.c: Rename to... * s390-linux-tdep.c: ...here.
