2024-09-07gdb: allow quoted filenames for commands that have custom completionAndrew Burgess1-6/+5
This commit changes how GDB processes command arguments for the following commands: compile file maint print c-tdesc save gdb-index After this commit these commands will now expect their single filename argument to be (optionally) quoted if it contains any special characters (e.g. whit space or quotes). If the filename does not contain any special characters then nothing changes. As an example: (gdb) save gdb-index /path/to/some/directory/ will work before and after this patch. However, if the directory name contains a white space then before this patch a user would write: (gdb) save gdb-index /path/to some/directory/ But this will now fail as GDB will consider this as two arguments, '/path/to' and 'some/directory/'. To pass this single directory name a user must now do one of these: (gdb) save gdb-index "/path/to some/directory/" (gdb) save gdb-index '/path/to some/directory/' (gdb) save gdb-index /path/to\ some/directory/ This brings these commands into line with commands like 'file' and 'symbol-file', which have supported quoted filenames for a while. The motivation for this change is to make handling of filename arguments consistent throughout GDB. We can't move to all commands taking non-quoted filenames as the non-quoted style only allows for a single argument. Additionally, the non-quoted style doesn't allow for filenames that end in white space (though this is probably pretty rare). So, if we want to have consistency the only choice is to move towards supporting quote filenames. Reviewed-By: Eli Zaretskii <eliz@gnu.org>
2024-09-07gdb: deprecated filename_completer and associated functionsAndrew Burgess1-2/+2
Following on from the previous commit, this commit marks the old unquoted filename completion related functions as deprecated. The aim of doing this is to make it more obvious to someone adding a new command that they should not be using the older unquoted style filename argument handling. I split this change from the previous to make for an easier review. This commit touches more files, but is _just_ function renaming. Check out gdb/completer.{c,h} for what has been renamed. All the other files have just been updated to use the new names. There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

2024-04-25gdb: remove gdbcmd.hSimon Marchi1-1/+1
Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through the 170 or so files by hand. 2024-04-03Revert "gdb/compile: Use std::filesystem::remove_all in cleanup"Lancelot SIX1-7/+9
This reverts commit 7bba0ad08576309763e3f41193eaa93025e10b8b. Tom de Vries reported that 7bba0ad0857 (gdb/compile: Use std::filesystem::remove_all in cleanup) broke builds with gcc-7.5.0 which mostly supports c++17, but not std::filesystem[1]. As this change is not critical, revert it to maintain compatibility. 2024-04-03gdb/compile: Use std::filesystem::remove_all in cleanupLancelot SIX1-9/+7
In a previous review, I noticed that some code in gdb/compile/compile.c could use c++17's `std::filesystem::remove_all` instead of using some `system ("rm -rf ...");`. This patch implements this. Note that I use the noexcept overload of std::filesystem::remove_all and explicitly check for an error code. This means that this code called during the cleanup procedure cannot throw, and does not risk preventing other cleanup functions to be called. Tested on x86_64-linux. 2024-01-12Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDBAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.
2023-11-21gdb: Replace gdb::optional with std::optionalLancelot Six1-2/+2
Since GDB now requires C++17, we don't need the internally maintained gdb::optional implementation. This patch does the following replacing: - gdb::optional -> std::optional - gdb::in_place -> std::in_place - #include "gdbsupport/gdb_optional.h" -> #include <optional> This change has mostly been done automatically. One exception is gdbsupport/thread-pool.* which did not use the gdb:: prefix as it already lives in the gdb namespace. 2021-10-03gdb: make string-like set show commands use std::string variableSimon Marchi1-23/+23
String-like settings (var_string, var_filename, var_optional_filename, var_string_noescape) currently take a pointer to a `char *` storage variable (typically global) that holds the setting's value. I'd like to "mordernize" this by changing them to use an std::string for storage. An obvious reason is that string operations on std::string are often easier to write than with C strings. And they avoid having to do any manual memory management. Another interesting reason is that, with `char *`, nullptr and an empty string often both have the same meaning of "no value". String settings are initially nullptr (unless initialized otherwise). But when doing "set foo" (where `foo` is a string setting), the setting now points to an empty string. For example, solib_search_path is nullptr at startup, but points to an empty string after doing "set solib-search-path". This leads to some code that needs to check for both to check for "no value". Or some code that converts back and forth between NULL and "" when getting or setting the value. I find this very error-prone, because it is very easy to forget one or the other. With std::string, we at least know that the variable is not "NULL". There is only one way of representing an empty string setting, that is with an empty string. I was wondering whether the distinction between NULL and "" would be important for some setting, but it doesn't seem so. If that ever happens, it would be more C++-y and self-descriptive to use optional<string> anyway. Actually, there's one spot where this distinction mattered, it's in init_history, for the test gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp. init_history sets the history filename to the default ".gdb_history" if it sees that the setting was never set - if history_filename is nullptr. If history_filename is an empty string, it means the setting was explicitly cleared, so it leaves it as-is. With the change to std::string, this distinction doesn't exist anymore. This can be fixed by moving the code that chooses a good default value for history_filename to _initialize_top. This is ran before -ex commands are processed, so an -ex command can then clear that value if needed (what gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp tests). Another small improvement, in my opinion is that we can now easily give string parameters initial values, by simply initializing the global variables, instead of xstrdup-ing it in the _initialize function. In Python and Guile, when registering a string-like parameter, we allocate (with new) an std::string that is owned by the param_smob (in Guile) and the parmpy_object (in Python) objects. This patch started by changing all relevant add_setshow_* commands to take an `std::string *` instead of a `char **` and fixing everything that failed to build. That includes of course all string setting variable and their uses. string_option_def now uses an std::string also, because there's a connection between options and settings (see add_setshow_cmds_for_options). The add_path function in source.c is really complex and twisted, I'd rather not try to change it to work on an std::string right now. Instead, I added an overload that copies the std:string to a `char *` and back. This means more copying, but this is not used in a hot path at all, so I think it is acceptable. 2021-06-17Introduce scoped_restore_signalPedro Alves1-28/+1
We currently have scoped_restore_sigttou and scoped_restore_sigpipe doing basically the same thing -- temporarily ignoring a specific signal. This patch introduce a scoped_restore_signal type that can be used for both. This will become more important for the next patch which changes how the signal-ignoring is implemented. scoped_restore_sigpipe is a straight alias to scoped_restore_signal<SIGPIPE> on systems that define SIGPIPE, and an alias to scoped_restore_signal_nop (a no-op version of scoped_restore_signal) otherwise. scoped_restore_sigttou is not a straight alias because it wants to check the job_control global. gdb/ChangeLog: yyyy-mm-dd Pedro Alves <pedro@palves.net> * gdbsupport/scoped_ignore_signal.h: New. * compile/compile.c: Include gdbsupport/scoped_ignore_signal.h instead of <signal.h>. 2021-05-27gdb: make add_com_alias accept target as a cmd_list_elementSimon Marchi1-1/+1
The alias creation functions currently accept a name to specify the target command. They pass this to add_alias_cmd, which needs to lookup the target command by name. Given that: - We don't support creating an alias for a command before that command exists. - We always use add_info_alias just after creating that target command, and therefore have access to the target command's cmd_list_element. ... change add_com_alias to accept the target command as a cmd_list_element (other functions are done in subsequent patches). This ensures we don't create the alias before the target command, because you need to get the cmd_list_element from somewhere when you call the alias creation function. And it avoids an unecessary command lookup. So it seems better to me in every aspect. gdb/ChangeLog: * command.h (add_com_alias): Accept target as cmd_list_element. Update callers. 2021-05-12gdb: generate the prefix name for prefix commands on demandMarco Barisione1-1/+1
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily generated. Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for many commands, but this was fixed in commit 3f4d92ebdf7f848b5ccc9e8d8e8514c64fde1183 by Philippe Waroquiers, so we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix name. This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario: * A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class). The prefix name member is dynamically allocated. * An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct assignment. * A new command with the same name as the Python command is created. * The object for the original Python command gets freed and its prefixname gets freed as well. * The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one. gdb/ChangeLog: * command.h (add_prefix_cmd): Remove the prefixname argument as it can now be generated automatically. 2020-09-16gdb: Convert la_name and la_natural_name to methodsAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
Convert the two language_data member variables la_name and la_natural_name to virtual methods in language_defn struct called name and natural_name respectively. The virtual methods in the language_defn base class are pure virtual, as every language must implement these, and as every language has a unique name there's no sensible default here. Given that every language must implement these methods I did wonder about making this data passed into the base class constructor, but in the end I went with the virtual method approach. I'm open to changing this approach if people prefer the constructor approach. During updating the calls to language_defn::name I found in add_set_language_command a place where we took la_name and then capitalised the first letter to create a language name that could be used in the documentation string. I replaced this with a use of natural_name instead as this seemed a better choice, in most cases this will make no difference, as for most languages the natural_name is just the name with the first character in upper case, but for some languages, for example 'Open-CL' and 'Objective-C' this is not the case. In the case of asm_language the name is 'asm', while the natural_name was previously 'assembly'. I changed the natural name to 'Assembly', this makes the documentation string case above cleaner, however, this will change the MI output for -var-info-expression, where the 'lang' field will change from 'assembly' to 'Assembly'. It is possible this could be a breaking change if a front-end is relying on the existing name. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (ada_language_data): Remove la_name and la_natural_name initializers. 2020-06-02gdb: Convert language la_get_compile_instance field to a methodAndrew Burgess1-5/+3
This commit changes the language_data::la_get_compile_instance function pointer member variable into a member function of language_defn. Unlike previous commits converting fields of language_data to member function in language_defn, this field is NULL for some languages. As a result I had to change the API slightly so that the base language_defn class provides an implementation. There should be no user visible changes after this commit. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (ada_language_data): Delete la_get_compile_instance initializer. * c-lang.c (class compile_instance): Declare. 2020-01-13gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functionsSimon Marchi1-1/+2
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it warns for every _initialize function, for example: CXX dcache.o /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’: /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations] _initialize_dcache (void) ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations, which were removed by this commit: commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9 Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700 Remove unnecessary function prototypes. I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy to use it. gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-fbsd-nat.c 2019-10-15Change gcc_target_options to return std::stringTom Tromey1-1/+1
This patch was inspired by a recent review that recommended using std::string in a new implementation of the gcc_target_options gdbarch function. It changes this function to return std::string rather than an ordinary xmalloc'd string. I believe this caught a latent memory leak in compile.c:get_args. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-10-15 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * gdbarch.h, gdbarch.c: Rebuild. * gdbarch.sh (gcc_target_options): Change return type to std::string. * compile/compile.c (get_args): Update. * nios2-tdep.c (nios2_gcc_target_options): Return std::string. * arm-linux-tdep.c (arm_linux_gcc_target_options): Return std::string. * aarch64-linux-tdep.c (aarch64_linux_gcc_target_options): Return std::string. * arch-utils.c (default_gcc_target_options): Return std::string. * arch-utils.h (default_gcc_target_options): Return std::string. * s390-tdep.c (s390_gcc_target_options): Return std::string. 2019-08-07Make first and last lines of 'command help documentation' consistent.Philippe Waroquiers1-5/+7
With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants: * The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character. * The last character of a command help is not a newline character. Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of : [PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then. Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above invariants. Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This was giving inconsistent results : * The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated, sometimes not. * The first line of command helps was not always designed to be readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems: < catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names < down-silently -- Same as the `down' command while the new help is: > catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised. > catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled. > catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers. > down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything. Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline character, but this was not respected by all commands. The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences. So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the end of %OPTIONS% replacement. This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants given above. It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs. Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by 'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command help) now outputs the full first line of a command help. This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs. There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings). gdb/ChangeLog 2019-08-07 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be> * cli/cli-decode.h (print_doc_line): Add for_value_prefix argument. * cli/cli-decode.c (print_doc_line): Likewise. 2019-08-05Use _() in calls to build_helpTom Tromey1-3/+3
Currently some code in gdb uses build_help with N_(), like: static const std::string compile_print_help = gdb::option::build_help (N_("\ I believe this is incorrect. The N_ macro is used to mark text that should end up in the message catalog, but which will be translated by a later call to gettext. However, in this case, there is no later call to gettext, so (if gdb had translations), this text would remain untranslated. Instead, I think using the ordinary _() macro is correct here. Translators will have to know to preserve "%OPTIONS%" in the text -- but that seems both unavoidable and fine. Tested by rebuilding as there's not much else to do. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-08-05 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * compile/compile.c (_initialize_compile): Use _(), not N_(). * thread.c (_initialize_thread): Use _(), not N_(). * stack.c (_initialize_stack): Use _(), not N_(). * printcmd.c (_initialize_printcmd): Use _(), not N_().
2019-07-09Rename common to gdbsupportTom Tromey1-5/+5
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Tested by the buildbot. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-07-09 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * contrib/ari/gdb_ari.sh: Change common to gdbsupport. * configure: Rebuild. * configure.ac: Change common to gdbsupport. * 2019-06-13Fix gdb build with -std=gnu++11Pedro Alves1-1/+1
The options framework series broken the build with gcc 4.8, or any other compiler were we end up forcing -std=gnu++11, causing errors like these: ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/compile/compile.c: In function gdb::option::option_def_group make_compile_options_def_group(compile_options*): ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/compile/compile.c:266:44: error: could not convert (const gdb::option::option_def*)(& compile_command_option_defs) from const gdb::option::option_def* to gdb::array_view<const gdb::option::option_def> return {compile_command_option_defs, opts}; ^ CXX copying.o ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/compile/compile.c:267:1: error: control reaches end of non-void function [-Werror=return-type] } ^ This is a C++11 vs C++14 difference -- C++14 relaxed the rules for eliding braces. This commit fixes it by adding the missing (in C++11) braces. Tested with g++ 4.8. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-06-13 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * compile/compile.c (make_compile_options_def_group): Add braces around array_view initializer. * thread.c (make_thread_apply_all_options_def_group) (make_thread_apply_all_options_def_group): Likewise.
2019-06-13Migrate rest of compile commands to new options frameworkPedro Alves1-58/+111
As I was in the neighbourhood, I converted the other "compile" subcommands to the new options framework too. Specifically, "compile code" and "compile file". The user-visible changes are: - All abbreviations of "-raw" are accepted now, instead of just -r. Obviously that means "-ra" is now accepted. - Option completion now works. - "compile file" did not have a completer yet, and now it knows to complete on filenames. - You couldn't use "compile file" with a file named "-something". You can now, with "compile file -- -something". gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-06-13 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * compile/compile.c (struct compile_options): New.
