2024-04-11Remove bfdwin.cAlan Modra1-1/+0
In commit b86d3af60ffc and 0ab0435fe672 I fixed SIGBUS errors found by oss-fuzz now that --with-mmap defaults to enabled. It turns out there are further problems with the aout mmap code: aout_read_minisymbols returns the external symbol array, which is later freed by nm.c. If the array is mmaped you can't free it. Now this could be fixed by making aout minisymbols an array of pointers, but I figure there's not much point in expending effort on that. So delete the aout mmap support along with bfdwin.c and get_section_contents_in_window.

2024-01-04Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
2023-10-25asan: out of memory in som_set_reloc_infoAlan Modra1-18/+20
Sections without SEC_HAS_CONTENTS avoid the file size checks, and of course it doesn't make sense to read such as the contents are all zero. * som.c (som_set_reloc_info): Don't read sections without contents.
2023-08-25som: buffer overflow writing stringsAlan Modra1-181/+98
Code in som_write_symbol_strings neglected to allow for padding, which can result in a buffer overflow. It also used xrealloc, which we're not supposed to use in libbfd because libbfd isn't supposed to call exit. Also a realloc is perhaps not a good idea when none of the buffer contents are needed, so replace with free, bfd_malloc. There were three copies of the string handling code, so rather than fix them all I've extracted them to a function. This necessitated making one of the fields in struct som_symbol unsigned. * som.c (add_string): New function. (som_write_space_strings, som_write_symbol_strings): Use it. * som.h (som_symbol_type <stringtab_offset>): Make unsigned.
2023-08-09Rename bfd_bread and bfd_bwriteAlan Modra1-56/+54
These were renamed from bfd_read and bfd_write back in 2001 when they lost an unnecessary parameter. Rename them back, and get rid of a few casts that are only needed without prototyped functions (K&R C).
2023-06-07_bfd_free_cached_infoAlan Modra1-5/+5
doc/bfdint.texi and comments in the aout and som code about this function are just wrong, and its name is not very apt. Better would be _bfd_mostly_destroy, and we certainly should not be saying anything about the possibility of later recreating anything lost by this function. What's more, if _bfd_free_cached_info is called when creating an archive map to reduce memory usage by throwing away symbols, the target _close_and_cleanup function won't have access to tdata or section bfd_user_data to tidy memory. This means most of the target _close_and_cleanup function won't do anything, and therefore sometimes will result in memory leaks. This patch fixes the documentation problems and moves most of the target _close_and_cleanup code to target _bfd_free_cached_info. Another notable change is that bfd_generic_bfd_free_cached_info is now defined as _bfd_free_cached_info rather than _bfd_bool_bfd_true, ie. the default now frees objalloc memory.
2023-06-01bfd_close and target free_cached_memoryAlan Modra1-2/+4
bfd_free_cached_info is used in just one place in archive.c, which means most times we reach bfd_close the function isn't called. On the other hand, if bfd_free_cached_info is called we can't do much on the bfd since it loses all its obj_alloc memory. This restricts what can be done in a target _close_and_cleanup. In particular you can't look at sections, which leads to duplication of code in target close_and_cleanup and free_cached_info, eg. elfnn-aarch64.c. * opncls.c (_bfd_delete_bfd): Call bfd_free_cached_info. * elfnn-aarch64.c (elfNN_aarch64_close_and_cleanup): Delete. (bfd_elfNN_close_and_cleanup): Don't define. * som.c (som_bfd_free_cached_info): Don't call _bfd_generic_close_and_cleanup here. (som_close_and_cleanup): Define as _bfd_generic_close_and_cleanup.
2023-01-01Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.
2022-11-23PR22509 - Null pointer dereference on coff_slurp_reloc_tableAlan Modra1-1/+1
This extends the commit 4581a1c7d304 fix to more targets, which hardens BFD a little. I think the real underlying problem was the bfd_canonicalize_reloc call in load_specific_debug_section which passed a NULL for "symbols". Fix that too. 2022-10-29NULL dereference read in som_write_object_contentsAlan Modra1-2/+3
objcopy copy_object may omit the call to bfd_copy_private_bfd_data for various conditions deemed non-fatal, in which case obj_som_exec_data will be NULL for the output file. * som.c (som_finish_writing): Don't dereference NULL obj_som_exec_data.
2022-10-26som.c reloc sanity checkingAlan Modra1-295/+287
This patch checks that relocations emitted in som_write_fixups have offsets that are monotonic and within a section. To do that properly using bfd_reloc_offset_in_range it is necessary to set the reloc howto size field, which isn't used otherwise by the som backend. Note that the sizes used are not exactly those in the old sizing switch statement deleted from som_write_fixups, but all relocs handled by the main switch statement there get the same size. Most unhandled relocs get a zero size (exceptions being R_RELOCATION, R_SPACE_REF, R_MILLI_REL, R_BREAKPOINT which all involve writing one word according to my SOM reference). I figure it doesn't matter since any unhandled reloc is converted to 0xff R_RESERVED, and a default of zero is better for a "don't know" reloc. Besides tidying the code, stringizing name from type in SOM_HOWTO fixes R_REPEATED_INIT name. * som.c (SOM_HOWTO): Add SIZE arg, delete NAME. Stringize type to name. (som_hppa_howto_table): Update with sizes. (som_write_fixups): Delete sizing switch statement. Sanity check bfd_reloc address against subsection size.
2022-10-26som.c buffer overflowAlan Modra1-4/+6
Fuzzed object files can put random values in bfd_reloc->address, leading to large som_reloc_skip output. * som.c (som_write_fixups): Allow for maximal som_reloc_skip.
2022-09-14asan: som_set_reloc_info heap buffer overflowAlan Modra1-2/+7
Also a bugfix. The first time the section was read, the contents didn't supply an addend. * som.c (som_set_reloc_info): Sanity check offset. Do process contents after reading. Tidy section->contents after freeing.

Do the shift using unsigned variables to avoid UB on << 8. * som.c (som_set_reloc_info): Make v unsigned. Localise some variables to their blocks.
2022-08-01Get rid of fprintf_vma and sprintf_vmaAlan Modra1-3/+2
These two macros print either a 16 digit hex number or an 8 digit hex number. Unfortunately they depend on both target and host, which means that the output for 32-bit targets may be either 8 or 16 hex digits. Replace them in most cases with code that prints a bfd_vma using PRIx64. In some cases, deliberately lose the leading zeros. This change some output, notably in base/offset fields of m68k disassembly which I think looks better that way, and in error messages. 2022-06-08Revert reloc howto nitsAlan Modra1-1/+1
The "HOWTO size encoding" patch put 1 as the HOWTO size arg for numerous howtos that are unused, describe dynamic relocs, are markers, or otherwise are special purpose reloc howtos that don't care about the size. The idea was to ensure no howto changed by inspecting object files. 2022-06-08HOWTO size encodingAlan Modra1-1/+1
This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. This of course requires editing all target uses of HOWTO, a major pain, but makes it a little nicer to specify new target HOWTOs. 2021-01-07ELF: Don't generate unused section symbolsH.J. Lu1-0/+1
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations. With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB. Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is always included in the symbol table. Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed. Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to: 1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE. 2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend. 3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker outputs. bfd/ PR 27109 * aix386-core.c (core_aix386_vec): Initialize keep_unused_section_symbol to TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS. * aout-target.h (MY (vec)): Likewise. * binary.c (binary_vec): Likewise. * cisco-core.c (core_cisco_be_vec): Likewise. 2020-03-02bfd_cleanup for object_pAlan Modra1-3/+3
The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the target that allocated the memory. It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed. In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. The only cleanup that does anything at this stage is the alpha-vms one. bfd/ * targets.c (bfd_cleanup): New typedef. 2020-02-19_bfd_mul_overflowAlan Modra1-39/+108
This patch removes the bfd_alloc2 series of memory allocation functions, replacing them with __builtin_mul_overflow followed by bfd_alloc. Why do that? 2020-02-19bfd_size_type to size_tAlan Modra1-16/+16
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is larger by far than that of a pointer. * aix386-core.c (aix386_core_file_p): Use size_t for "amt". * aout-target.h (object_p): Likewise. * aout-tic30.c (tic30_aout_object_p): Likewise. * aoutx.h
