Most code paths for creating a user creatable object go through
QemuOpts, which ensures that the provided 'id' option is actually a
valid identifier.
However, there are some code paths that don't go through QemuOpts:
qemu-storage-daemon --object (since commit 8db1efd3) and QMP object-add
(since it was first introduced in commit cff8b2c6). We need to have the
same validity check for those, too.
This adds the check and makes it print the same error message as
QemuOpts on failure.

Global properties have an @optional field, which allows to apply a given
property to a given type even if one of its subclasses doesn't support
it. This is especially used in the compat code when dealing with the
"disable-modern" and "disable-legacy" properties and the "virtio-pci"
type.
Allow object_register_sugar_prop() to set this field as well.

QOM reference counting bugs are often hard to detect, but there's
one kind of bug that's easier: if we are freeing an object but is
still attached to a parent, it means the reference count is wrong
(because the parent always hold a reference to their children).
Add an assertion to make sure we detect those cases.

Commit aafb21a0b9 "qobject: let object_property_get_str() use new API"

qobject_to_json() and qobject_to_json_pretty() build a GString, then
covert it to QString. Just one of the callers actually needs a
QString: qemu_rbd_parse_filename(). A few others need a string they
can modify: qmp_send_response(), qga's send_response(), to_json_str(),
and qmp_fd_vsend_fds(). The remainder just need a string.
Change qobject_to_json() and qobject_to_json_pretty() to return the
GString.
qemu_rbd_parse_filename() now has to convert to QString. All others
save a QString temporary. to_json_str() actually becomes a bit
simpler, because GString provides more convenient modification
functions.

Anywhere we create a list of just one item or by prepending items
(typically because order doesn't matter), we can use
QAPI_LIST_PREPEND(). But places where we must keep the list in order
by appending remain open-coded until later patches.
Note that as a side effect, this also performs a cleanup of two minor
issues in qga/commands-posix.c: the old code was performing
new = g_malloc0(sizeof(*ret));
which 1) is confusing because you have to verify whether 'new' and
'ret' are variables with the same type, and 2) would conflict with C++
compilation (not an actual problem for this file, but makes
copy-and-paste harder).

Object property insertion code iterates over an integer to get an unused
index that can be used as an unique name for an object property. This loop
increments the integer value indefinitely. Although very unlikely, this can
still cause an integer overflow.
In this change, we fix the above code by checking against INT16_MAX and making
sure that the interger index does not overflow beyond that value. If no
available index is found, the code would cause an assertion failure. This
assertion failure is necessary because the callers of the function do not check
the return value for NULL.

clang's C11 atomic_fetch_*() functions only take a C11 atomic type
pointer argument. QEMU uses direct types (int, etc) and this causes a
compiler error when a QEMU code calls these functions in a source file
that also included <stdatomic.h> via a system header file:
$ CC=clang CXX=clang++ ./configure ... && make
../util/async.c:79:17: error: address argument to atomic operation must be a pointer to _Atomic type ('unsigned int *' invalid)
Avoid using atomic_*() names in QEMU's atomic.h since that namespace is
used by <stdatomic.h>. Prefix QEMU's APIs with 'q' so that atomic.h
and <stdatomic.h> can co-exist. I checked /usr/include on my machine and
searched GitHub for existing "qatomic_" users but there seem to be none.
This patch was generated using:
$ git grep -h -o '\<atomic\(64\)\?_[a-z0-9_]\+' include/qemu/atomic.h | \
sort -u >/tmp/changed_identifiers
$ for identifier in $(</tmp/changed_identifiers); do
sed -i "s%\<$identifier\>%q$identifier%g" \
$(git grep -I -l "\<$identifier\>")
done
I manually fixed line-wrap issues and misaligned rST tables.

When debugging QEMU it is often useful to put a breakpoint on the
error_setg_internal method impl.
Unfortunately the object_property_add / object_class_property_add
methods call object_property_find / object_class_property_find methods
to check if a property exists already before adding the new property.
As a result there are a huge number of calls to error_setg_internal
on startup of most QEMU commands, making it very painful to set a
breakpoint on this method.
Most callers of object_find_property and object_class_find_property,
however, pass in a NULL for the Error parameter. This simplifies the
methods to remove the Error parameter entirely, and then adds some
new wrapper methods that are able to raise an Error when needed.

The object_ref/unref methods are intended for use with any subclass of
the base Object. Using "Object *" in the signature is not adding any
meaningful level of type safety, since callers simply use "OBJECT(ptr)"
and this expands to an unchecked cast "(Object *)".
By using "void *" we enable the object_unref() method to be used to
provide support for g_autoptr() with any subclass.

Meson doesn't enjoy the same flexibility we have with Make in choosing
the include path. In particular the tracing headers are using
$(build_root)/$(<D).
In order to keep the include directives unchanged,
the simplest solution is to generate headers with patterns like
"trace/trace-audio.h" and place forwarding headers in the source tree
such that for example "audio/trace.h" includes "trace/trace-audio.h".
This patch is too ugly to be applied to the Makefiles now. It's only
a way to separate the changes to the tracing header files from the
Meson rewrite of the tracing logic.

Commit e8c9e65816 "qom: Make "info qom-tree" show children sorted"
sorts children the simple, stupid, quadratic way. I thought the
number of children would be small enough for this not to matter. I
was wrong: there are outliers with several hundred children, e.g ARM
machines nuri and smdkc210 each have a node with 513 children.
While n^2 sorting isn't noticeable in normal, human usage even for
n=513, it can be quite noticeable in certain automated tests. In
particular, the sort made device-introspect-test even slower. Commit
3e7b80f84d "tests: improve performance of device-introspect-test" just
fixed that by cutting back its excessive use of "info qom-tree".
Sorting more efficiently makes sense regardless, so do it.

Commit e8c9e65816 "qom: Make "info qom-tree" show children sorted"
created a memory leak, because I didn't realize
object_get_canonical_path_component()'s value needs to be freed.
Reproducer:
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -display none -S -monitor stdio
QEMU 5.0.50 monitor - type 'help' for more information
(qemu) info qom-tree
This leaks some 4500 path components, 12-13 characters on average,
i.e. roughly 100kBytes depending on the allocator. A couple of
hundred "info qom-tree" here, a couple of hundred there, and soon
enough we're talking about real memory.
Plug the leak.

object_property_add() does not allow object_property_try_add()
to gracefully fail as &error_abort is passed as an error handle.
However such failure can easily be triggered from the QMP shell when,
for instance, one attempts to create an object with an id that already
exists. This is achieved from the following call path:
qmp_object_add -> user_creatable_add_dict -> user_creatable_add_type ->
object_property_add_child -> object_property_add
For instance, from the qmp-shell, call twice:
object-add qom-type=memory-backend-ram id=mem1 props.size=1073741824
and QEMU aborts.
This behavior is undesired as a user/management application mistake
in reusing a property ID shouldn't result in loss of the VM and live
data within.
This patch introduces a new function, object_property_try_add_child()
which takes an error handle and turn object_property_try_add() into
a non-static one.
Now the call path becomes:
user_creatable_add_type -> object_property_try_add_child ->
object_property_try_add
and the error is returned gracefully to the QMP client.

This is unsound: @err could still be read between afterwards. I don't
know how to express "no read of @err without an intervening write" in

The "when != lbl:" is necessary to avoid transforming

out:
error_propagate(errp, err);
even though other paths to label out still need the error_propagate().
For an actual example, see sclp_realize().
Without the "when strict", Coccinelle transforms vfio_msix_setup(),
incorrectly. I don't know what exactly "when strict" does, only that
it helps here.
The match of return is narrower than what I want, but I can't figure
out how to express "return where the operand doesn't use @err". For
an example where it's too narrow, see vfio_intx_enable().
Silently fails to convert hw/arm/armsse.c, because Coccinelle gets
confused by ARMSSE being used both as typedef and function-like macro
there. Converted manually.
Line breaks tidied up manually. One nested declaration of @local_err
deleted manually. Preexisting unwanted blank line dropped in
hw/riscv/sifive_e.c.

Commit 7d2ef6dcc1cf ("hmp: Simplify qom-set") switched to the json
parser, making it possible to specify complex types. However, with this
change it is no longer possible to specify proper sizes (e.g., 2G, 128M),
turning the interface harder to use for properties that consume sizes.
Let's switch back to the previous handling and allow to specify passing
json via the "-j" parameter.
