2018-03-06balloon: Fix documentation of the --balloon parameter and deprecate itThomas Huth1-0/+5
There are two issues with the documentation of the --balloon parameter: First, "--balloon none" is simply doing nothing. Even if a machine had a balloon device by default, this option is not disabling anything, it is simply ignored. Thus let's simply drop this option from the documentation to avoid to confuse the users (but keep the code in vl.c for backward compatibility). Second, the documentation claims that "--balloon virtio" is the default mode, but this is not true anymore since commit 382f074371f7dc32a34. Since that commit, the option also has no real use case anymore, since you can simply use "--device virtio-balloon" nowadays instead. Thus to simplify our complex parameter zoo a little bit, let's deprecate the the parameter now and tell the user to use "--device virtio-balloon" instead. 2018-03-06Document --rtc-td-hack, --localtime and --startdate as deprecatedThomas Huth1-5/+11
These options have been marked in a comment in qemu-options.hx as deprecated in 2009 already (see commit 1ed2fc1fa35fadc0d6), but we never informed the users about these deprecations. Let's catch up on that omission now. 2018-03-06scsi: Remove automatic creation of SCSI controllers with -drive if=scsiThomas Huth1-5/+0
Automatic creation of SCSI controllers for "-drive if=scsi" for x86 machines was quite a bad idea (see description of commit f778a82f0c179 for details). This is marked as deprecated since QEMU v2.9.0, and as far as I know, nobody complained that this is still urgently required anymore. Time to remove this now. 2018-03-05net: Remove the deprecated 'host_net_add' and 'host_net_remove' HMP commandsThomas Huth1-10/+0
They are deprecated since QEMU v2.10, and so far nobody complained that these commands are still necessary for any reason - and since you can use 'netdev_add' and 'netdev_remove' instead, there also should not be any real reason. Since they are also standing in the way for the upcoming 'vlan' clean-up, it's now time to remove them. 2018-03-05net: Remove the deprecated way of dumping network packetsThomas Huth1-6/+0
"-net dump" has been marked as deprecated since QEMU v2.10, since it only works with the deprecated 'vlan' parameter (or hubs). Network dumping should be done with "-object filter-dump" nowadays instead. Since nobody complained so far about the deprecation message, let's finally get rid of "-net dump" now. 2018-02-13block: maintain persistent disabled bitmapsVladimir Sementsov-Ogievskiy1-0/+7
To maintain load/store disabled bitmap there is new approach: - deprecate @autoload flag of block-dirty-bitmap-add, make it ignored - store enabled bitmaps as "auto" to qcow2 - store disabled bitmaps without "auto" flag to qcow2 - on qcow2 open load "auto" bitmaps as enabled and others as disabled (except in_use bitmaps) Also, adjust iotests 165 and 176 appropriately. 2018-01-27ppc: Deprecate qemu-system-ppcembthuth@redhat.com1-0/+6
qemu-system-ppcemb has been once split of qemu-system-ppc to support CPU page sizes < 4096 for some of the embedded 4xx PowerPC CPUs. However, there was hardly any OS available in the wild that really used such small page sizes (Linux uses 4096 on PPC), so there is no known recent use case for this separate build anymore. It's rather cumbersome to maintain a separate set of config switches for this, and it's wasting compile and test time of all the developers who have to build all QEMU targets to verify that their changes did not break anything. Except for the small CPU page sizes, qemu-system-ppc can be used as a full replacement for qemu-system-ppcemb since it contains all the embedded 4xx PPC boards and CPUs, too. Thus let's start the deprecation process for qemu-system-ppcemb to see whether somebody still needs the small page sizes or whether we could finally remove this unloved separate build. 2017-12-20qemu-options qemu-doc: Move "Device URL Syntax" to qemu-docMarkus Armbruster1-0/+216
Commit 0f5314a (v1.0) added section "Device URL Syntax" to qemu-options.hx. It's enclosed in STEXI..ETEXI, thus affects only qemu-options.texi, not --help. It appears as a subsection under section "Invocation". Similarly, qemu.1 has it as a subsection under "OPTIONS". Commit f9dadc9 (v1.1.0) dropped new option -iscsi into the middle of this section. No effect on qemu-options.texi. It appears in --help run together with the "Bluetooth(R) options:" header. Commit c70a01e (v1.5.0) gives it is own heading in --help by moving commit 0f5314a's DEFHEADING(Device URL Syntax:) outside STEXI..ETEXI. Trouble is the heading makes no sense for -iscsi. Move all of the "Device URL Syntax" Texinfo to qemu-doc.texi. Mark it for inclusion in qemu.1 with '@c man begin NOTES'. This turns it into a separate section outside the list of options both in qemu-doc and in qemu.1. There's substantial overlap with the existing qemu-doc section "Disk Images". Mark with a TODO comment. Output of --help will be fixed next. 2017-08-01docs: document deprecation policy & deprecated features in appendixDaniel P. Berrange1-0/+175
The deprecation of features in QEMU is totally adhoc currently, with no way for the user to get a list of what is deprecated in each release. This adds an appendix to the doc that records when each deprecation was made and provides text explaining what to use instead, if anything. Since there has been no formal policy around removal of deprecated features in the past, any deprecations prior to 2.10.0 are to be treated as if they had been made at the 2.10.0 release. Thus the earliest that existing deprecations will be deleted is the start of the 2.12.0 cycle. Signed-off-by: Daniel P. Since commit 3f2ce724f1f1 ("Move the qemu-ga description into a separate chapter"), the qemu.1 man page looks pretty much screwed up, e.g. the title was "qemu-ga - QEMU Guest Agent" instead of "qemu-doc - QEMU Emulator User Documentation". However, that movement of the gemu-ga chapter is not the real problem, it just triggered another bug in the qemu-doc.texi: There are some parts in the file which introduce a "@c man begin OPTIONS" section, but never close it again with "@c man end". After adding the proper end tags here, the title of the man page is right again and the previously wrongly tagged sections now also show up correctly in the man page, too. 2017-06-04qemu-doc: Move the qemu-ga description into a separate chapterThomas Huth1-6/+7
The qemu-ga description is currently a subsection of the Disk Images chapter - which does not make much sense since the qemu-ga is not directly related to disk images. So let's move this information into a separate chapter instead. 2017-05-12qemu-doc: Update to use the new way of attaching USB devicesThomas Huth1-41/+52
The preferred way of adding USB devices is via "-device" and "device_add" nowadays, so let's start to get rid of "-usbdevice" and "usb_add" in the documentation. While we're at it, also add the new USB devices there which have been added to QEMU during the last years, and get rid of the old "vendorid" and "productid" parameters of "-usbdevice serial" which have been removed in QEMU version 0.14.0 already. 2017-05-09Default to GSSAPI (Kerberos) instead of DIGEST-MD5 for SASLDaniel P. Berrange1-21/+29
RFC 6331 documents a number of serious security weaknesses in the SASL DIGEST-MD5 mechanism. As such, QEMU should not be using or recommending it as a default mechanism for VNC auth with SASL. GSSAPI (Kerberos) is the only other viable SASL mechanism that can provide secure session encryption so enable that by defalt as the replacement. If users have TLS enabled for VNC, they can optionally decide to use SCRAM-SHA-1 instead of GSSAPI, allowing plain username and password auth.
