2022-11-06module: add Error arguments to module_load and module_load_qomClaudio Fontana1-5/+32
improve error handling during module load, by changing: bool module_load(const char *prefix, const char *lib_name); void module_load_qom(const char *type); to: int module_load(const char *prefix, const char *name, Error **errp); int module_load_qom(const char *type, Error **errp); where the return value is: -1 on module load error, and errp is set with the error 0 on module or one of its dependencies are not installed 1 on module load success 2 on module load success (module already loaded or built-in) module_load_qom_one has been introduced in: commit 28457744c345 ("module: qom module support"), which built on top of module_load_one, but discarded the bool return value. Restore it. Adapt all callers to emit errors, or ignore them, or fail hard, as appropriate in each context. Replace the previous emission of errors via fprintf in _some_ error conditions with Error and error_report, so as to emit to the appropriate target. A memory leak is also fixed as part of the module_load changes. audio: when attempting to load an audio module, report module load errors. Note that still for some callers, a single issue may generate multiple error reports, and this could be improved further. Regarding the audio code itself, audio_add() seems to ignore errors, and this should probably be improved. block: when attempting to load a block module, report module load errors. For the code paths that already use the Error API, take advantage of those to report module load errors into the Error parameter. For the other code paths, we currently emit the error, but this could be improved further by adding Error parameters to all possible code paths. console: when attempting to load a display module, report module load errors. qdev: when creating a new qdev Device object (DeviceState), report load errors. If a module cannot be loaded to create that device, now abort execution (if no CONFIG_MODULE) or exit (if CONFIG_MODULE). qom/object.c: when initializing a QOM object, or looking up class_by_name, report module load errors. qtest: when processing the "module_load" qtest command, report errors in the load of the module. module_kconfig is a new directive that should be used with module_obj whenever that module depends on the Kconfig to be enabled. When the module is enabled in Kconfig we are sure that its dependencies will be enabled as well, thus the module will be loaded without any problem. 2021-11-08docs: remove non-reference uses of single backticksJohn Snow1-3/+3
The single backtick markup in ReST is the "default role". Currently, Sphinx's default role is called "content". Sphinx suggests you can use the "Any" role instead to turn any single-backtick enclosed item into a cross-reference. This is useful for things like autodoc for Python docstrings, where it's often nicer to reference other types with `foo` instead of the more laborious :py:meth:`foo`. It's also useful in multi-domain cases to easily reference definitions from other Sphinx domains, such as referencing C code definitions from outside of kerneldoc comments. Before we do that, though, we'll need to turn all existing usages of the "content" role to inline verbatim markup wherever it does not correctly resolve into a cross-refernece by using double backticks instead. 2020-10-15module: silence errors for module_load_qom_all().Gerd Hoffmann1-4/+4
Add mayfail bool parameter to module loading functions. Set it to true for module_load_qom_all() because device modules might not load into all system emulation variants. qemu-system-s390x for example will not load qxl because it lacks vga support. Makes "make check" less chatty. Drop module_loaded_qom_all check in module_load_qom_one to make sure we see errors for explicit load requests, i.e. module_load_qom_one("qxl") failing will log an error no matter whenever module_load_qom_all() was called before or not. 2019-01-14xen: add a mechanism to automatically create XenDevice-s...Paul Durrant1-0/+3
...that maintains compatibility with existing Xen toolstacks. Xen toolstacks instantiate PV backends by simply writing information into xenstore and expecting a backend implementation to be watching for this. This patch adds a new 'xen-backend' module to allow individual XenDevice implementations to register create and destroy functions. The creator will be called when a tool-stack instantiates a new backend in this way, and the destructor will then be called after the resulting XenDevice object is unrealized. To support this it is also necessary to add new watchers into the XenBus implementation to handle enumeration of new backends and also destruction of XenDevice-s when the toolstack sets the backend 'online' key to 0. NOTE: This patch only adds the framework. A subsequent patch will add a creator function for xen-block devices. 2017-03-05qmp: Dumb down how we run QMP command registrationMarkus Armbruster1-2/+0
The way we get QMP commands registered is high tech: * qapi-commands.py generates qmp_init_marshal() that does the actual work * it also generates the magic to register it as a MODULE_INIT_QAPI function, so it runs when someone calls module_call_init(MODULE_INIT_QAPI) * main() calls module_call_init() QEMU needs to register a few non-qapified commands. Same high tech works: monitor.c has its own qmp_init_marshal() along with the magic to make it run in module_call_init(MODULE_INIT_QAPI). QEMU also needs to unregister commands that are not wanted in this build's configuration (commit 5032a16). Simple enough: qmp_unregister_commands_hack(). The difficulty is to make it run after the generated qmp_init_marshal(). We can't simply run it in monitor.c's qmp_init_marshal(), because the order in which the registered functions run is indeterminate. So qmp_init_marshal() registers qmp_unregister_commands_hack() separately. Since registering *appends* to the list of registered functions, this will make it run after all the functions that have been registered already. I suspect it takes a long and expensive computer science education to not find this silly. Dumb it down as follows: * Drop MODULE_INIT_QAPI entirely * Give the generated qmp_init_marshal() external linkage. * Call it instead of module_call_init(MODULE_INIT_QAPI) * Except in QEMU proper, call new monitor_init_qmp_commands() that in turn calls the generated qmp_init_marshal(), registers the additional commands and unregisters the unwanted ones. Remove the notion of there being a single global array of trace events, by introducing a method for registering groups of events. The module_call_init() needs to be invoked at the start of any program that wants to make use of the trace support. Currently this covers system emulators qemu-nbd, qemu-img and qemu-io. 2016-09-20blockdev: Add dynamic module loading for block driversMarc Mari1-0/+3
Extend the current module interface to allow for block drivers to be loaded dynamically on request. The only block drivers that can be converted into modules are the drivers that don't perform any init operation except for registering themselves. In addition, only the protocol drivers are being modularized, as they are the only ones which see significant performance benefits. The format drivers do not generally link to external libraries, so modularizing them is of no benefit from a performance perspective. All the necessary module information is located in a new structure found in module_block.h This spoils the purpose of 5505e8b76f (block/dmg: make it modular). Before this patch, if module build is enabled, block-dmg.so is linked to libbz2, whereas the main binary is not. In downstream, theoretically, it means only the qemu-block-extra package depends on libbz2, while the main QEMU package needn't to. With this patch, we (temporarily) change the case so that the main QEMU depends on libbz2 again. 2014-02-20module: implement module loadingFam Zheng1-1/+22
This patch adds loading, stamp checking and initialization of modules. The init function of dynamic module is no longer directly called as __attribute__((constructor)) in static linked version, it is called only after passed the checking of presense of stamp symbol: qemu_stamp_$RELEASEHASH where $RELEASEHASH is generated by hashing version strings and content of configure script. With this, modules built from a different tree/version/configure will not be loaded. The module loading code requires gmodule-2.0.
