2022-07-05xen/pass-through: don't create needless register groupChuck Zmudzinski1-5/+9
Currently we are creating a register group for the Intel IGD OpRegion for every device we pass through, but the XEN_PCI_INTEL_OPREGION register group is only valid for an Intel IGD. Add a check to make sure the device is an Intel IGD and a check that the administrator has enabled gfx_passthru in the xl domain configuration. Require both checks to be true before creating the register group. Use the existing is_igd_vga_passthrough() function to check for a graphics device from any vendor and that the administrator enabled gfx_passthru in the xl domain configuration, but further require that the vendor be Intel, because only Intel IGD devices have an Intel OpRegion. These are the same checks hvmloader and libxl do to determine if the Intel OpRegion needs to be mapped into the guest's memory. Also, move the comment about trapping 0xfc for the Intel OpRegion where it belongs after applying this patch. 2022-07-05xen/pass-through: merge emulated bits correctlyChuck Zmudzinski1-5/+6
In xen_pt_config_reg_init(), there is an error in the merging of the emulated data with the host value. With the current Qemu, instead of merging the emulated bits with the host bits as defined by emu_mask, the emulated bits are merged with the host bits as defined by the inverse of emu_mask. In some cases, depending on the data in the registers on the host, the way the registers are setup, and the initial values of the emulated bits, the end result will be that the register is initialized with the wrong value. To correct this error, use the XEN_PT_MERGE_VALUE macro to help ensure the merge is done correctly. This correction is needed to resolve Qemu project issue #1061, which describes the failure of Xen HVM Linux guests to boot in certain configurations with passed through PCI devices, that is, when this error disables instead of enables the PCI_STATUS_CAP_LIST bit of the PCI_STATUS register of a passed through PCI device, which in turn disables the MSI-X capability of the device in Linux guests with the end result being that the Linux guest never completes the boot process. 2022-01-12aio-posix: split poll check from ready handlerStefan Hajnoczi1-3/+3
Adaptive polling measures the execution time of the polling check plus handlers called when a polled event becomes ready. Handlers can take a significant amount of time, making it look like polling was running for a long time when in fact the event handler was running for a long time. For example, on Linux the io_submit(2) syscall invoked when a virtio-blk device's virtqueue becomes ready can take 10s of microseconds. This can exceed the default polling interval (32 microseconds) and cause adaptive polling to stop polling. By excluding the handler's execution time from the polling check we make the adaptive polling calculation more accurate. As a result, the event loop now stays in polling mode where previously it would have fallen back to file descriptor monitoring. The following data was collected with virtio-blk num-queues=2 event_idx=off using an IOThread. 2021-10-15softmmu/qdev-monitor: add error handling in qdev_set_idDamien Hedde1-1/+2
qdev_set_id() is mostly used when the user adds a device (using -device cli option or device_add qmp command). This commit adds an error parameter to handle the case where the given id is already taken. Also document the function and add a return value in order to be able to capture success/failure: the function now returns the id in case of success, or NULL in case of failure. The commit modifies the 2 calling places (qdev-monitor and xen-legacy-backend) to add the error object parameter. Note that the id is, right now, guaranteed to be unique because all ids came from the "device" QemuOptsList where the id is used as key. This addition is a preparation for a future commit which will relax the uniqueness. 2021-02-05pci: add romsize propertyPaolo Bonzini1-2/+12
This property can be useful for distros to set up known-good ROM sizes for migration purposes. The VM will fail to start if the ROM is too large, and migration compatibility will not be broken if the ROM is too small. Note that even though romsize is a uint32_t, it has to be between 1 (because empty ROM files are not accepted, and romsize must be greater than the file) and 2^31 (because values above are not powers of two and are rejected). 2020-10-19xen-bus: reduce scope of backend watchPaul Durrant2-8/+43
Currently a single watch on /local/domain/X/backend is registered by each QEMU process running in service domain X (where X is usually 0). The purpose of this watch is to ensure that QEMU is notified when the Xen toolstack creates a new device backend area. Such a backend area is specific to a single frontend area created for a specific guest domain and, since each QEMU process is also created to service a specfic guest domain, it is unnecessary and inefficient to notify all QEMU processes. Only the QEMU process associated with the same guest domain need receive the notification. This patch re-factors the watch registration code such that notifications are targetted appropriately. Meson doesn't enjoy the same flexibility we have with Make in choosing the include path. In particular the tracing headers are using $(build_root)/$(<D). In order to keep the include directives unchanged, the simplest solution is to generate headers with patterns like "trace/trace-audio.h" and place forwarding headers in the source tree such that for example "audio/trace.h" includes "trace/trace-audio.h". This patch is too ugly to be applied to the Makefiles now. It's only a way to separate the changes to the tracing header files from the Meson rewrite of the tracing logic. 2020-06-12xen: fix build without pci passthroughAnthony PERARD4-4/+39
Xen PCI passthrough support may not be available and thus the global variable "has_igd_gfx_passthru" might be compiled out. Common code should not access it in that case. Unfortunately, we can't use CONFIG_XEN_PCI_PASSTHROUGH directly in xen-common.c so this patch instead move access to the has_igd_gfx_passthru variable via function and those functions are also implemented as stubs. The stubs will be used when QEMU is built without passthrough support. Now, when one will want to enable igd-passthru via the -machine property, they will get an error message if QEMU is built without passthrough support. 2020-05-15qdev: Unrealize must not failMarkus Armbruster1-6/+6
Devices may have component devices and buses. Device realization may fail. Realization is recursive: a device's realize() method realizes its components, and device_set_realized() realizes its buses (which should in turn realize the devices on that bus, except bus_set_realized() doesn't implement that, yet). When realization of a component or bus fails, we need to roll back: unrealize everything we realized so far. If any of these unrealizes failed, the device would be left in an inconsistent state. Must not happen. device_set_realized() lets it happen: it ignores errors in the roll back code starting at label child_realize_fail. Since realization is recursive, unrealization must be recursive, too. But how could a partly failed unrealize be rolled back? We'd have to re-realize, which can fail. This design is fundamentally broken. device_set_realized() does not roll back at all. Instead, it keeps unrealizing, ignoring further errors. It can screw up even for a device with no buses: if the lone dc->unrealize() fails, it still unregisters vmstate, and calls listeners' unrealize() callback. bus_set_realized() does not roll back either. Instead, it stops unrealizing. Fortunately, no unrealize method can fail, as we'll see below. To fix the design error, drop parameter @errp from all the unrealize methods. Any unrealize method that uses @errp now needs an update. This leads us to unrealize() methods that can fail. Merely passing it to another unrealize method cannot cause failure, though. Here are the ones that do other things with @errp: * virtio_serial_device_unrealize() Fails when qbus_set_hotplug_handler() fails, but still does all the other work. On failure, the device would stay realized with its resources completely gone. Oops. Can't happen, because qbus_set_hotplug_handler() can't actually fail here. Pass &error_abort to qbus_set_hotplug_handler() instead. * hw/ppc/spapr_drc.c's unrealize() Fails when object_property_del() fails, but all the other work is already done. On failure, the device would stay realized with its vmstate registration gone. Oops. Can't happen, because object_property_del() can't actually fail here. Pass &error_abort to object_property_del() instead. * spapr_phb_unrealize() Fails and bails out when remove_drcs() fails, but other work is already done. On failure, the device would stay realized with some of its resources gone. Oops. remove_drcs() fails only when chassis_from_bus()'s object_property_get_uint() fails, and it can't here. Pass &error_abort to remove_drcs() instead. Therefore, no unrealize method can fail before this patch. device_set_realized()'s recursive unrealization via bus uses object_property_set_bool(). Can't drop @errp there, so pass &error_abort. We similarly unrealize with object_property_set_bool() elsewhere, always ignoring errors. Pass &error_abort instead. Several unrealize methods no longer handle errors from other unrealize methods: virtio_9p_device_unrealize(), virtio_input_device_unrealize(), scsi_qdev_unrealize(), ... Much of the deleted error handling looks wrong anyway. One unrealize methods no longer ignore such errors: usb_ehci_pci_exit(). Several realize methods no longer ignore errors when rolling back: v9fs_device_realize_common(), pci_qdev_unrealize(), spapr_phb_realize(), usb_qdev_realize(), vfio_ccw_realize(), virtio_device_realize(). 2020-05-15qom: Drop parameter @errp of object_property_add() & friendsMarkus Armbruster1-2/+1
The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with the same name already exists. Since our property names are all hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to handle it is passing &error_abort. Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is also under program control, so this is a programming error, too. We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass &error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers. The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring programming errors is a bad idea. Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API. The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second call. ich9_pm_add_properties(), sparc32_ledma_realize(), sparc32_dma_realize(), xilinx_axidma_realize(), xilinx_enet_realize() are wrong that way. When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting users pick the argument is a bad idea. Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead. There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there. Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(), and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add(). object_property_set_description() and object_class_property_set_description() fail only when property @name is not found. There are 85 calls of object_property_set_description() and object_class_property_set_description(). None of them can fail: * 84 immediately follow the creation of the property. * The one in spapr_rng_instance_init() refers to a property created in spapr_rng_class_init(), from spapr_rng_properties[]. Every one of them still gets to decide what to pass for @errp. 51 calls pass &error_abort, 32 calls pass NULL, one receives the error and propagates it to &error_abort, and one propagates it to &error_fatal. I'm actually surprised none of them violates the Error API. What are we gaining by letting callers handle the "property not found" error? Use when the property is not known to exist is simpler: you don't have to guard the call with a check. We haven't found such a use in 5+ years. Until we do, let's make life a bit simpler and drop the @errp parameter. Since bd457782b3b0 ("x86/pc: use memdev for RAM") Xen machine fails to start with: qemu-system-i386: xen: failed to populate ram at 0 The reason is that xen_ram_alloc() which is called by memory_region_init_ram(), compares memory region with statically allocated 'global' ram_memory memory region that it uses for RAM, and does nothing in case it matches. While it's possible feed machine->ram to xen_ram_alloc() in the same manner to keep that hack working, I'd prefer not to keep that circular dependency and try to untangle that. However it doesn't look trivial to fix, so as temporary fixup opt out Xen machine from memdev based RAM allocation, and let xen_ram_alloc() do its trick for now. 2020-02-27xen-bus/block: explicitly assign event channels to an AioContextPaul Durrant1-4/+23
It is not safe to close an event channel from the QEMU main thread when that channel's poller is running in IOThread context. This patch adds a new xen_device_set_event_channel_context() function to explicitly assign the channel AioContext, and modifies xen_device_bind_event_channel() to initially assign the channel's poller to the QEMU main thread context. The code in xen-block's dataplane is then modified to assign the channel to IOThread context during xen_block_dataplane_start() and de-assign it during in xen_block_dataplane_stop(), such that the channel is always assigned back to main thread context before it is closed. aio_set_fd_handler() already deals with all the necessary synchronization when moving an fd between AioContext-s so no extra code is needed to manage this.
