TYPE_ETRAX_FS_TIMER is a sysbus device, so its DeviceClass::reset() handler is called automatically when its qbus parent is reset (we don't need to register it manually). They can't be plugged with -device / device_add, except for xlnx,zynqmp-pmu-soc, and I doubt that one actually works. They *can* be used with -device / device_add to request help. Usability is poor, though: you have to double the comma, like this: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -device SUNW,,fdtwo,help Trap for the unwary. The fact that this was broken in device-introspect-test for more than six years until commit e27bd49876 fixed it demonstrates that "the unwary" includes seasoned developers. One QOM type name contains ' ': "ICH9 SMB". Because having to remember just one way to quote would be too easy. Rename the "SUNW,FOO types to "sun-FOO". Summarily replace ',' and ' ' by '-' in the other type names. 2019-10-15ptimer: Rename ptimer_init() to ptimer_init_with_bh()Peter Maydell1-3/+3
Currently the ptimer design uses a QEMU bottom-half as its mechanism for calling back into the device model using the ptimer when the timer has expired. Unfortunately this design is fatally flawed, because it means that there is a lag between the ptimer updating its own state and the device callback function updating device state, and guest accesses to device registers between the two can return inconsistent device state. We want to replace the bottom-half design with one where the guest device's callback is called either immediately (when the ptimer triggers by timeout) or when the device model code closes a transaction-begin/end section (when the ptimer triggers because the device model changed the ptimer's count value or other state). As the first step, rename ptimer_init() to ptimer_init_with_bh(), to free up the ptimer_init() name for the new API. We can then convert all the ptimer users away from ptimer_init_with_bh() before removing it entirely. (Commit created with git grep -l ptimer_init | xargs sed -i -e 's/ptimer_init/ptimer_init_with_bh/' and three overlong lines folded by hand.) 2019-08-16sysemu: Split sysemu/runstate.h off sysemu/sysemu.hMarkus Armbruster1-1/+1
sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related to the system-emulator. Evidence: * It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits). * It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers. Split stuff related to run state management into its own header sysemu/runstate.h. Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400 to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects. Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also add qemu/main-loop.h. In my "build everything" tree, changing qemu/main-loop.h triggers a recompile of some 5600 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). It includes block/aio.h, which in turn includes qemu/event_notifier.h, qemu/notify.h, qemu/processor.h, qemu/qsp.h, qemu/queue.h, qemu/thread-posix.h, qemu/thread.h, qemu/timer.h, and a few more. Include qemu/main-loop.h only where it's needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 1700 objects. For block/aio.h and qemu/event_notifier.h, these numbers drop from 5600 to 2800. For the others, they shrink only slightly. Several other headers include it just to get qemu_irq and.or qemu_irq_handler. Move the qemu_irq and qemu_irq_handler typedefs from hw/irq.h to qemu/typedefs.h, and then include hw/irq.h only where it's still needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 500 objects. Time to wire up all the call sites that request a shutdown or reset to use the enum added in the previous patch. It would have been less churn to keep the common case with no arguments as meaning guest-triggered, and only modified the host-triggered code paths, via a wrapper function, but then we'd still have to audit that I didn't miss any host-triggered spots; changing the signature forces us to double-check that I correctly categorized all callers. Since command line options can change whether a guest reset request causes an actual reset vs. a shutdown, it's easy to also add the information to reset requests.
