2019-08-16Include hw/qdev-properties.h lessMarkus Armbruster1-0/+1
In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/qdev-properties.h triggers a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). Many places including hw/qdev-properties.h (directly or via hw/qdev.h) actually need only hw/qdev-core.h. Include hw/qdev-core.h there instead. hw/qdev.h is actually pointless: all it does is include hw/qdev-core.h and hw/qdev-properties.h, which in turn includes hw/qdev-core.h. Replace the remaining uses of hw/qdev.h by hw/qdev-properties.h. While there, delete a few superfluous inclusions of hw/qdev-core.h. Touching hw/qdev-properties.h now recompiles some 1200 objects. Several other headers include it just to get VMStateDescription. The previous commit made that unnecessary. Include migration/vmstate.h only where it's still needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 1600 objects. Several other headers include it just to get qemu_irq and.or qemu_irq_handler. Move the qemu_irq and qemu_irq_handler typedefs from hw/irq.h to qemu/typedefs.h, and then include hw/irq.h only where it's still needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 500 objects. Many of these are marked as "intentional/fix required" because they just need adding a fall through comment. This is exactly what this patch does, except for target/mips/translate.c where it is easier to duplicate the code, and hw/audio/sb16.c where I consulted the DOSBox sources and decide to just remove the LOG_UNIMP before the fallthrough. 2018-05-04hw/arm: Don't fail qtest due to missing SD card in -nodefaults modeThomas Huth1-8/+7
When running omap1/2 or pxa2xx based ARM machines with -nodefaults, they bail out immediately complaining about a "missing SecureDigital device". That's not how the "default" devices in vl.c are meant to work - it should be possible for a board to also start up without default devices. So let's turn the error message and exit() into a warning instead. Changed zillions of devices to make them return 0; the only case I've made it return non-0 is hw/intc/s390_flic_kvm.c that already had an error_report/return case. there are 2 use cases to deal with: 1: fixed CPU models per board/soc 2: boards with user configurable cpu_model and fallback to default cpu_model if user hasn't specified one explicitly For the 1st drop intermediate cpu_model parsing and use const cpu type directly, which replaces: typename = object_class_get_name( cpu_class_by_name(TYPE_ARM_CPU, cpu_model)) object_new(typename) with object_new(FOO_CPU_TYPE_NAME) or cpu_generic_init(BASE_CPU_TYPE, "my cpu model") with cpu_create(FOO_CPU_TYPE_NAME) as result 1st use case doesn't have to invoke not necessary translation and not needed code is removed. For the 2nd 1: set default cpu type with MachineClass::default_cpu_type and 2: use generic cpu_model parsing that done before machine_init() is run and: 2.1: drop custom cpu_model parsing where pattern is: typename = object_class_get_name( cpu_class_by_name(TYPE_ARM_CPU, cpu_model)) [parse_features(typename, cpu_model, &err) ] 2.2: or replace cpu_generic_init() which does what 2.1 does + create_cpu(typename) with just create_cpu(machine->cpu_type) as result cpu_name -> cpu_type translation is done using generic machine code one including parsing optional features if supported/present (removes a bunch of duplicated cpu_model parsing code) and default cpu type is defined in an uniform way within machine_class_init callbacks instead of adhoc places in boadr's machine_init code. 2017-09-19cpu: make cpu_generic_init() abort QEMU on errorIgor Mammedov1-8/+0
Almost every user of cpu_generic_init() checks for returned NULL and then reports failure in a custom way and aborts process. Some users assume that call can't fail and don't check for failure, though they should have checked for it. In either cases cpu_generic_init() failure is fatal, so instead of checking for failure and reporting it various ways, make cpu_generic_init() report errors in consistent way and terminate QEMU on failure. 2017-01-09i2c: Allow I2C devices to NAK start eventsCorey Minyard1-1/+3
Add a return value to the event handler. Some I2C devices will NAK if they have no data, so allow them to do this. This required the following changes: Go through all the event handlers and change them to return int and return 0. Modify i2c_start_transfer to terminate the transaction on a NAK. Modify smbus handing to not assert if a NAK occurs on a second operation, and terminate the transaction and return -1 instead. Add some information on semantics to I2CSlaveClass. Now that all front end use qemu_chr_fe_init(), we can move chardev claiming in init(), and add a function deinit() to release the chardev and cleanup handlers. The qemu_chr_fe_claim_no_fail() for property are gone, since the property will raise an error instead. In other cases, where there is already an error path, an error is raised instead. Finally, other cases are handled by &error_abort in qemu_chr_fe_init(). 2016-10-17pxa2xx: Auto-assign name for i2c bus in i2c_init_bus.Vijay Kumar B1-1/+1
If a name is provided, the same name is assigned to both the I2C controllers. Leaving it NULL, causes names to be automatically assigned with an ID suffix, giving unique names to each controller. This helps us to uniquely identify each controller in the device tree, for example when adding an I2C device. 2016-09-13hw: replace most use of qemu_chr_fe_write with qemu_chr_fe_write_allDaniel P. Berrange1-1/+3
The qemu_chr_fe_write method will return -1 on EAGAIN if the chardev backend write would block. Almost no callers of the qemu_chr_fe_write() method check the return value, instead blindly assuming data was successfully sent. In most cases this will lead to silent data loss on interactive consoles, but in some cases (eg RNG EGD) it'll just cause corruption of the protocol being spoken. We unfortunately can't fix the virtio-console code, due to a bug in the Linux guest drivers, which would cause the entire Linux kernel to hang if we delay processing of the incoming data in any way. 2016-03-22include/qemu/osdep.h: Don't include qapi/error.hMarkus Armbruster1-0/+1
Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h, compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a similar job to this file and are under similar constraints." qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of 100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need. Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List. Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h, sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h comment quoted above similarly. This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. Symptom: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 Unexpected error in ram_block_add() at /work/armbru/qemu/exec.c:1456: upstream-qemu: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory Aborted (core dumped) Root cause: commit ef701d7 screwed up handling of out-of-memory conditions. Before the commit, we report the error and exit(1), in one place, ram_block_add(). The commit lifts the error handling up the call chain some, to three places. Fine. Except it uses &error_abort in these places, changing the behavior from exit(1) to abort(), and thus undoing the work of commit 3922825 "exec: Don't abort when we can't allocate guest memory". The three places are: * memory_region_init_ram() Commit 4994653 (right after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, through memory_region_init_ram(), multiplying the incorrect use of &error_abort. Later on, imitation of existing (bad) code may have created more. * memory_region_init_ram_ptr() The &error_abort is still there. * memory_region_init_rom_device() Doesn't need fixing, because commit 33e0eb5 (soon after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, and in the process changed it from &error_abort to passing it up the call chain. Correct, because the callers are realize() methods. Fix the error handling after memory_region_init_ram() with a Coccinelle semantic patch: @r@ expression mr, owner, name, size, err; position p; @@ memory_region_init_ram(mr, owner, name, size, ( - &error_abort + &error_fatal | err@p ) ); @script:python@ p << r.p; @@ print "%s:%s:%s" % (p[0].file, p[0].line, p[0].column) When the last argument is &error_abort, it gets replaced by &error_fatal. This is the fix. If the last argument is anything else, its position is reported. This lets us check the fix is complete. Four positions get reported: * ram_backend_memory_alloc() Error is passed up the call chain, ultimately through user_creatable_complete(). As far as I can tell, it's callers all handle the error sanely. * fsl_imx25_realize(), fsl_imx31_realize(), dp8393x_realize() DeviceClass.realize() methods, errors handled sanely further up the call chain. We're good. Test case again behaves: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 qemu-system-x86_64: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory [Exit 1 ] The next commits will repair the rest of commit ef701d7's damage.
