2020-01-08Don’t include sys/types.h or stdint.h from most public headers.Zack Weinberg1-1/+1
Many public headers include sys/types.h and/or stdint.h when they only need and/or are supposed to define a small number of types from that header. This patch changes as many of them as practical to include only the single-type headers for the types they are actually specified to define, and use the impl-namespace aliases for any types they need but are not specified to define. In most cases, where a header has historically used uintN_t types, I changed it to use __uintN_t types; in a few cases I chose to have it continue to define the complete set of those types (using <bits/stdint-uintn.h>). After this patch, the public headers that still include sys/types.h are: stdlib.h and sys/param.h, where removal would risk breaking far too much; the inclusion of sys/types.h; regex.h, which is taken verbatim from gnulib and can't include features.h directly (I'm open to better ideas); sys/bitypes.h, which is an alternative name for sys/types.h; and the networking headers, which will be dealt with separately. The headers that still include stdint.h are: inttypes.h, as required by ISO C; elf.h and thread_db.h, see discussion of debugger interface headers below; and, again, the networking headers will be dealt with separately. While I was at it, I moved headers out of sysdeps where possible: If we have only a sysdeps/generic/something.h or sysdeps/gnu/something.h, no other sysdeps variants, it is not really system-dependent and can be moved to the directory that installs it. If we have both sysdeps/generic/ and gnu/something.h, the generic version is never used (since we support only GNUish systems these days) and can be deleted, and the gnu-version can be moved to the directory that installs it. If the only copy of a bits header is in the top-level bits directory, it is not system-dependent. For utmp.h and utmpx.h, I think we might be able to fold their respective bits headers into the primary headers and make them not system-dependent at all. The remaining variation is between s390*-*-linux* and everything else, and it appears to me that the s390 versions of the bits headers are actually the headers that everyone should be using. The only difference is that the s390 headers unconditionally use 64-bit quantities for lastlog.ll_time, utmp{,x}.ut_tv, and utmp{,x}.ut_session, whereas the generic headers use either 64- or 32-bit quantities depending on __WORDSIZE_TIME64_COMPAT32. I could be wrong, but I don’t think it makes sense for programs with 64-bit and 32-bit time_t to have different ideas of the layout of a structures that are copied directly to and from a shared file on disk. But fixing that doesn’t belong in this patch series. The conform tests expect utmpx.h to define time_t and suseconds_t. These are the public names for the types of the fields of struct timeval, and utmpx.h is required to define struct timeval, so this is a reasonable expectation even though POSIX doesn't _explicitly_ say it's also required to define time_t and suseconds_t. utmp.h is not a standard header but it makes sense for it to be as consistent with utmpx.h as possible, especially in our implementation where /var/log/utmp and /var/log/utmpx have the same format. I thought I was going to need to change all of the arch-specific bits/epoll.h headers as well as sys/epoll.h, but it turned out not to be necessary. I still took the opportunity to give them all multiple inclusion guards. I suspect we do not need as many copies of bits/fcntl.h and bits/sem.h as we have, but that’s complicated enough that it deserves its own patchset. The debugger interface headers are a mess and I only have so much patience for them. This does the bare minimum required for thread_db.h, sys/procfs.h, and sys/user.h, which are at least nominally cross-platform interfaces, to avoid including sys/types.h, sys/time.h, and/or signal.h. Exposure of sys/ucontext.h is reduced but not eliminated. Cross-architecture consistency should be improved. It would be desirable to stop including stdint.h from elf.h and thread_db.h as well, but that would involve touching dozens more bits headers and I ran out of patience. Git does not understand “remove file X and then rename file Y over the top of it” very well, so the diff looks bigger than it should. This is another partial fix for Hurd-specific bug 23088. 2019-10-30Change most internal uses of __gettimeofday to __clock_gettime.Zack Weinberg2-6/+6
Since gettimeofday will shortly be implemented in terms of clock_gettime on all platforms, internal code should use clock_gettime directly; in addition to removing a layer of indirection, this will allow us to remove the PLT-bypass gunk for gettimeofday. (We can't quite do that yet, but it'll be coming later in this patch series.) In many cases, the changed code does fewer conversions. The changed code always assumes __clock_gettime (CLOCK_REALTIME) cannot fail. Most of the call sites were assuming gettimeofday could not fail, but a few places were checking for errors. POSIX says clock_gettime can only fail if the clock constant is invalid or unsupported, and CLOCK_REALTIME is the one and only clock constant that's required to be supported. For consistency I grepped the entire source tree for any other places that checked for errors from __clock_gettime (CLOCK_REALTIME), found one, and changed it too. (For the record, POSIX also says gettimeofday can never fail.) (It would be nice if we could declare that GNU systems will always support CLOCK_MONOTONIC as well as CLOCK_REALTIME; there are several places where we are using CLOCK_REALTIME where _MONOTONIC would be more appropriate, and/or trying to use _MONOTONIC and then falling back to _REALTIME. But the Hurd doesn't support CLOCK_MONOTONIC yet, and it looks like adding it would involve substantial changes to gnumach's internals and API. Oh well.) A few Hurd-specific files were changed to use __host_get_time instead of __clock_gettime, as this seemed tidier. We also assume this cannot fail. Skimming the code in gnumach leads me to believe the only way it could fail is if __mach_host_self also failed, and our Hurd-specific code consistently assumes that can't happen, so I'm going with that. With the exception of support/support_test_main.c, test cases are not modified, mainly because I didn't want to have to figure out which test cases were testing gettimeofday specifically. The definition of GETTIME in sysdeps/generic/memusage.h had a typo and was not reading tv_sec at all. I fixed this. It appears nobody has been generating malloc traces on a machine that doesn't have a superseding definition. There are a whole bunch of places where the code could be simplified by factoring out timespec subtraction and/or comparison logic, but I want to keep this patch as mechanical as possible. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, i686-linux-gnu, powerpc64le-linux-gnu, powerpc64-linux-gnu, powerpc-linux-gnu, and aarch64-linux-gnu. 2017-12-24Deprecate external use of libio.h and _G_config.h.Zack Weinberg2-2/+0
libio.h was originally the header for a set of supported GNU extensions, but they have not been maintained as such in many years, they are now standing in the way of improvements to stdio, and we don't think there are any remaining external users. _G_config.h was never intended for public use, but predates the bits convention. Move both of these headers into the bits directory and provide stubs at top level which issue deprecation warnings. The contents of (bits/)libio.h and (bits/)_G_config.h are still exposed to external software via stdio.h; changing that requires more complex surgery than I have time to attempt right now. * libio/libio.h, libio/_G_config.h: New stub headers which issue a deprecation warning and then include <bits/libio.h>, <bits/_G_config.h> respectively. * libio/libio.h: Rename the original version of this file to libio/bits/libio.h. 2017-07-04Single threaded stdio optimizationSzabolcs Nagy1-0/+1
Locking overhead can be significant in some stdio operations that are common in single threaded applications. This patch adds the _IO_FLAGS2_NEED_LOCK flag to indicate if an _IO_FILE object needs to be locked and some of the stdio functions just jump to their _unlocked variant when not. The flag is set on all _IO_FILE objects when the first thread is created. A new GLIBC_PRIVATE libc symbol, _IO_enable_locks, was added to do this from libpthread. The optimization can be applied to more stdio functions, currently it is only applied to single flag check or single non-wide-char standard operations. The flag should probably be never set for files with _IO_USER_LOCK, but that's just a further optimization, not a correctness requirement. The optimization is valid in a single thread because stdio operations are non-as-safe (so lock state is not observable from a signal handler) and stdio locks are recursive (so lock state is not observable via deadlock). The optimization is not valid if a thread may be created while an stdio lock is taken and thus it should be disabled if any user code may run during an stdio operation (interposed malloc, printf hooks, etc). This makes the optimization more complicated for some stdio operations (e.g. printf), but those are bigger and thus less important to optimize so this patch does not try to do that. * libio/libio.h (_IO_FLAGS2_NEED_LOCK, _IO_need_lock): Define. * libio/libioP.h (_IO_enable_locks): Declare. * libio/Versions (_IO_enable_locks): New symbol. * libio/genops.c (_IO_enable_locks): Define. 2017-05-20Remove __need macros from signal.h.Zack Weinberg1-0/+1
The types affected are __sig_atomic_t, sig_atomic_t, __sigset_t, sigset_t, sigval_t, sigevent_t, and siginfo_t. __sig_atomic_t is a scalar, so it's now directly available from bits/types.h. The others get bits/types/ headers. Side effects include: There have been small changes to which non-signal headers expose which subset of the signal-related types. A couple of architectures' nested siginfo_t fields had to be renamed to prevent undesired macro expansion. Internal code that wants to manipulate signal masks must now include <sigsetops.h> (which is not installed) and should be aware that __sigaddset, __sigandset, __sigdelset, __sigemptyset, and __sigorset no longer return a value (unlike the public API). Relatedly, the public signal.h no longer declares any of those functions. The obsolete sigmask() macro no longer has a system-specific definition -- in the cases where it matters, it didn't work anyway. New Linux architectures should create bits/siginfo-arch.h and/or bits/siginfo-consts-arch.h to customize their siginfo_t, rather than duplicating everything in bits/siginfo.h (which no longer exists). Add new __SI_* macros if necessary. 2016-09-23Installed-header hygiene (BZ#20366): time.h types.Zack Weinberg1-2/+1
Many headers are expected to expose a subset of the type definitions in time.h. time.h has a whole bunch of messy logic for conditionally defining some its types and structs, but, as best I can tell, this has never worked 100%. In particular, __need_timespec is ineffective if _TIME_H has already been defined, which means that if you compile #include <time.h> #include <sched.h> with e.g. -fsyntax-only -std=c89 -Wall -Wsystem-headers, you will get In file included from test.c:2:0: /usr/include/sched.h:74:57: warning: "struct timespec" declared inside parameter list will not be visible outside of this definition or declaration extern int sched_rr_get_interval (__pid_t __pid, struct timespec *__t) __THROW; ^~~~~~~~ And if you want to _use_ sched_rr_get_interval in a TU compiled that way, you're hosed. This patch replaces all of that with small bits/types/TYPE.h headers as introduced earlier. time.h and bits/time.h are now *much* simpler, and a lot of other headers are slightly simpler. * time/time.h, bits/time.h, sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/time.h: Remove all logic conditional on __need macros. 2015-10-20Convert 113 more function definitions to prototype style (files with ↵Joseph Myers3-9/+4
assertions). This mostly automatically-generated patch converts 113 function definitions in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style. Following my other recent such patches, this one deals with the case of function definitions in files that either contain assertions or where grep suggested they might contain assertions - and thus where it isn't possible to use a simple object code comparison as a sanity check on the correctness of the patch, because line numbers are changed. A few such automatically-generated changes needed to be supplemented by manual changes for the result to compile. openat64 had a prototype declaration with "..." but an old-style definition in sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/dl-openat64.c, and "..." needed adding to the generated prototype in the definition (I've filed <https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=68024> for diagnosing such cases in GCC; the old state was undefined behavior not requiring a diagnostic, but one seems a good idea). In addition, as Florian has noted regparm attribute mismatches between declaration and definition are only diagnosed for prototype definitions, and five functions needed internal_function added to their definitions (in the case of __pthread_mutex_cond_lock, via the macro definition of __pthread_mutex_lock) to compile on i386. After this patch is in, remaining old-style definitions are probably most readily fixed manually before we can turn on -Wold-style-definition for all builds. This automatically-generated patch converts 69 function definitions in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style. 2015-10-19Convert 231 sysdeps function definitions to prototype style.Joseph Myers11-25/+11
This mostly automatically-generated patch converts 231 sysdeps function definitions in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style. For __aio_sigqueue and __gai_sigqueue I had to add internal_function to the definitions as noted by Florian in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2015-10/msg00595.html> to keep the functions compiling on x86 after conversion to prototype definitions. Otherwise, the patch is automatically generated with all the same exclusions and caveats as in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2015-10/msg00594.html> except that it's a patch for sysdeps files. Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped shared libraries are unchanged by the patch). 2015-09-08Move bits/libc-lock.h and bits/libc-lockP.h out of bits/ (bug 14912).Joseph Myers1-1/+1
It was noted in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-09/msg00305.html> that the bits/*.h naming scheme should only be used for installed headers. This patch renames bits/libc-lock.h to plain libc-lock.h and bits/libc-lockP.h to plain libc-lockP.h to follow that convention. Note that I don't know where libc-lockP.h comes from for Hurd (the Hurd libc-lock.h includes libc-lockP.h, but the only libc-lockP.h in the glibc source tree is for NPTL) - some unmerged patch? - but I updated the #include in the Hurd libc-lock.h anyway. 2015-06-12Fix aio_* pread namespace (bug 18519).Joseph Myers1-4/+5
aio_* bring in references to pread, which isn't in all the standards containing aio_* (as a reference from one library to another, this is a bug for dynamic as well as static linking). This patch fixes this by using __libc_pread instead, exporting that function from libc at symbol version GLIBC_PRIVATE; the code, with conditionals that may call either __pread64 or __libc_pread, becomes exactly analogous to that elsewhere in the same file that may call either __pwrite64 or __libc_pwrite. Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and comparison of disassembly of installed shared libraries). libc changes because of the PLT entry for the newly exported __libc_pread; librt changes because of assertion line numbers and PLT rearrangement; other stripped installed shared libraries do not change. [BZ #18519] * posix/Versions (libc): Export __libc_pread at version GLIBC_PRIVATE. * sysdeps/pthread/aio_misc.c (handle_fildes_io): Call __libc_pread instead of pread. * conform/Makefile (test-xfail-POSIX/aio.h/linknamespace): Remove variable.

2014-12-11Move semaphore.h to sysdeps/pthread/.Joseph Myers1-0/+78
Carlos reported failures in conform/ tests in environments where the compiler used could only find headers in glibc's source and build trees, not any previously installed headers <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-09/msg00040.html>. This patch moves nptl/semaphore.h to sysdeps/pthread/semaphore.h so that it can be found by builds from all glibc subdirectories; it's not in any way NPTL-specific. (I left the Makefile setting to install this header in nptl/, but maybe it should move as well - it's just not clear to me what ifeq ($(subdir),...) conditional should be used to select the directory to associate the header with for installation purposes. The path in the toplevel Makefile used for begin-end-check also remains hardcoded; it's a known todo issue to rework that test to run in each subdirectory checking the headers installed from that subdirectory, rather than a separate hardcoded list.) Tested for x86_64 (testsuite, and that installed stripped shared libraries are unchanged by the patch). I did *not* test a configuration such as that in which Carlos saw failure. * nptl/semaphore.h: Move to ... * sysdeps/pthread/semaphore.h: ... here. * Makefile (installed-headers): Change nptl/semaphore.h to sysdeps/pthread/semaphore.h.
2014-12-06Fix pthreads getrlimit, gettimeofday namespace (bug 17682).Joseph Myers1-1/+1
Some pthreads functions use getrlimit and gettimeofday, but these functions are XSI, not base POSIX; this is a namespace issue for dynamic linking as well as static linking. This patch makes them use __getrlimit and __gettimeofday instead - the former needed to be newly exported from libc.so at GLIBC_PRIVATE (and so now needs libc_hidden_proto / libc_hidden_def), the latter was already exported. Tested for x86_64 (testsuite, and that disassembly of installed shared libraries is unchanged by the patch).
