2024-04-19login: Use unsigned 32-bit types for seconds-since-epochFlorian Weimer3-1/+44
These fields store timestamps when the system was running. No Linux systems existed before 1970, so these values are unused. Switching to unsigned types allows continued use of the existing struct layouts beyond the year 2038. Since the _FORTIFY_SOURCE feature uses some routines of Glibc, they need to be excluded from the fortification. On top of that: - some tests explicitly verify that some level of fortification works appropriately, we therefore shouldn't modify the level set for them. - some objects need to be build with optimization disabled, which prevents _FORTIFY_SOURCE to be used for them. Assembler files that implement architecture specific versions of the fortified routines were not excluded from _FORTIFY_SOURCE as there is no C header included that would impact their behavior. When opening a temporary file without O_CLOEXEC we risk leaking the file descriptor if another thread calls (fork and then) exec while we have the fd open. They are both used by __libc_freeres to free all library malloc allocated resources to help tooling like mtrace or valgrind with memory leak tracking. The current scheme uses assembly markers and linker script entries to consolidate the free routine function pointers in the RELRO segment and to be freed buffers in BSS. This patch changes it to use specific free functions for libc_freeres_ptrs buffers and call the function pointer array directly with call_function_static_weak. As well as the usual annual updates, mainly dates in --version output (minus csu/version.c which previously had to be handled manually but is now successfully updated by update-copyrights), there is a small change to the copyright notice in NEWS which should let NEWS get updated automatically next year. Please remember to include 2022 in the dates for any new files added in future (which means updating any existing uncommitted patches you have that add new files to use the new copyright dates in them).

We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012 in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect reality in those cases. Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by, etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a courtesy to the earlier developers. The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. The symbols forkpty, login, login_tty, logout, logwtmp, openpty were moved using scripts/move-symbol-to-libc.py. This is a single commit because most of the symbols are tied together via forkpty, for example. Several changes to use hidden prototypes are needed. This commit also updates pseudoterminal terminology on modified lines. For 390 (31-bit), this commit follows the existing style for the compat symbol version creation. The __clock_gettime internal function is not supporting 64 bit time on architectures with __WORDSIZE == 32 and __TIMESIZE != 64 (like e.g. ARM 32 bit). The __clock_gettime64 function shall be used instead in the glibc itself as it supports 64 bit time on those systems. This patch does not bring any changes to systems with __WORDSIZE == 64 as for them the __clock_gettime64 is aliased to __clock_gettime (in ./include/time.h).

2019-11-12login: Use pread64 in utmp implementationFlorian Weimer1-72/+95
This reduces the possible error scenarios considerably because no longer can file seek fail, leaving the file descriptor in an inconsistent state and out of sync with the cache. As a result, it is possible to avoid setting file_offset to -1 to make an error persistent. Instead, subsequent calls will retry the operation and report any errors returned by the kernel. This change also avoids reading the file from the start if pututline is called multiple times, to work around lock acquisition failures due to timeouts. 2019-10-30Change most internal uses of __gettimeofday to __clock_gettime.Zack Weinberg2-8/+8
Since gettimeofday will shortly be implemented in terms of clock_gettime on all platforms, internal code should use clock_gettime directly; in addition to removing a layer of indirection, this will allow us to remove the PLT-bypass gunk for gettimeofday. (We can't quite do that yet, but it'll be coming later in this patch series.) In many cases, the changed code does fewer conversions. The changed code always assumes __clock_gettime (CLOCK_REALTIME) cannot fail. Most of the call sites were assuming gettimeofday could not fail, but a few places were checking for errors. POSIX says clock_gettime can only fail if the clock constant is invalid or unsupported, and CLOCK_REALTIME is the one and only clock constant that's required to be supported. For consistency I grepped the entire source tree for any other places that checked for errors from __clock_gettime (CLOCK_REALTIME), found one, and changed it too. (For the record, POSIX also says gettimeofday can never fail.) (It would be nice if we could declare that GNU systems will always support CLOCK_MONOTONIC as well as CLOCK_REALTIME; there are several places where we are using CLOCK_REALTIME where _MONOTONIC would be more appropriate, and/or trying to use _MONOTONIC and then falling back to _REALTIME. But the Hurd doesn't support CLOCK_MONOTONIC yet, and it looks like adding it would involve substantial changes to gnumach's internals and API. Oh well.) A few Hurd-specific files were changed to use __host_get_time instead of __clock_gettime, as this seemed tidier. We also assume this cannot fail. Skimming the code in gnumach leads me to believe the only way it could fail is if __mach_host_self also failed, and our Hurd-specific code consistently assumes that can't happen, so I'm going with that. With the exception of support/support_test_main.c, test cases are not modified, mainly because I didn't want to have to figure out which test cases were testing gettimeofday specifically. The definition of GETTIME in sysdeps/generic/memusage.h had a typo and was not reading tv_sec at all. I fixed this. It appears nobody has been generating malloc traces on a machine that doesn't have a superseding definition. There are a whole bunch of places where the code could be simplified by factoring out timespec subtraction and/or comparison logic, but I want to keep this patch as mechanical as possible. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, i686-linux-gnu, powerpc64le-linux-gnu, powerpc64-linux-gnu, powerpc-linux-gnu, and aarch64-linux-gnu. The internal_getut_r function updates the file_offset variable and therefore must always update last_entry as well. Previously, if pututxline could not upgrade the read lock to a write lock, internal_getut_r would update file_offset only, without updating last_entry, and a subsequent call would not overwrite the existing utmpx entry at file_offset, instead creating a new entry. This has been observed to cause unbounded file growth in high-load situations. This commit removes the buffer argument to internal_getut_r and updates the last_entry variable directly, along with file_offset. Initially reported and fixed by Ondřej Lysoněk. The GNU Coding Standards specify that line breaks in expressions should go before an operator, not after one. This patch fixes various code to do this. It only changes code that appears to be mostly following GNU style anyway, not files and directories with substantially different formatting. It is not exhaustive even for files using GNU style (for example, changes to sysdeps files are deferred for subsequent cleanups). Some files changed are shared with gnulib, but most are specific to glibc. Changes were made manually, with places to change found by grep (so some cases, e.g. where the operator was followed by a comment at end of line, are particularly liable to have been missed by grep, but I did include cases where the operator was followed by backslash-newline). This patch generally does not attempt to address other coding style issues in the expressions changed (for example, missing spaces before '(', or lack of parentheses to ensure indentation of continuation lines properly reflects operator precedence). 2018-06-26Fix Linux fcntl OFD locks for non-LFS architectures (BZ#20251)Adhemerval Zanella1-2/+2
This patch fixes the OFD ("file private") locks for architectures that support non-LFS flock definition (__USE_FILE_OFFSET64 not defined). The issue in this case is both F_OFD_{GETLK,SETLK,SETLKW} and F_{SET,GET}L{W}K64 expects a flock64 argument and when using old F_OFD_* flags with a non LFS flock argument the kernel might interpret the underlying data wrongly. Kernel idea originally was to avoid using such flags in non-LFS syscall, but since GLIBC uses fcntl with LFS semantic as default it is possible to provide the functionality and avoid the bogus struct kernel passing by adjusting the struct manually for the required flags. The idea follows other LFS interfaces that provide two symbols: 1. A new LFS fcntl64 is added on default ABI with the usual macros to select it for FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64. 2. The Linux non-LFS fcntl use a stack allocated struct flock64 for F_OFD_{GETLK,SETLK,SETLKW} copy the results on the user provided struct. 3. Keep a compat symbol with old broken semantic for architectures that do not define __OFF_T_MATCHES_OFF64_T. So for architectures which defines __USE_FILE_OFFSET64, fcntl64 will aliased to fcntl and no adjustment would be required. So to actually use F_OFD_* with LFS support the source must be built with LFS support (_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64). Also F_OFD_SETLKW command is handled a cancellation point, as for F_SETLKW{64}. Newer kernels expose the ioctl TIOCGPTPEER [1] call to userspace which allows to safely allocate a file descriptor for a pty slave based solely on the master file descriptor. This allows us to avoid path-based operations and makes this function a lot safer in the face of devpts mounts in different mount namespaces.
