2019-04-24Use better test for usable compiler in ld testsuite.Sandra Loosemore1-1/+1
The ld testsuite includes numerous tests that depend on being able to compile and link programs with the C compiler. Some of these tests use [which $CC] to check for the presence of the compiler before proceeding with the test, but run_ld_link_exec_tests and run_cc_link_tests give ERRORs if compilation fails. Also, even if $CC is defined and present, it may not be usable due to missing libraries, etc. This patch adds a new procedure check_compiler_available that attempts to build an empty program and caches the result. The values of symbols in shared libraries like _end, _edata, and __bss_start are generally not that useful outside of the shared library. This patch defines them conditionally with PROVIDE, since a shared library might need the local value. An example is glibc ld.so local access to "_begin", "_etext" and "_end". (ld.so gains access to the local values by making the references using hidden visibility. That makes the definitions hidden too.) We can't use PROVIDE_HIDDEN in the linker scripts because the shared library might need the value of the symbol in the executable. An example is freebsd libc dynamic access to "_end". Besides issues of capitalization and full-stops, I've - Split up help messages for target options, so that adding a new option does not mean loss of translation for all the others. - Embedded tabs have been removed, since a user might have tab stops set at other than 8 char intervals. - Added missing program name (%P). ld isn't the compiler. - Put %F and %X first (and removed %X if %F was present). These can go anywhere, but look silly in the m%Fiddle of a message, and choosing "%P%F:" in some messages but "%F%P:" in others leads to the likelihood of duplication in ld.pot. This patch is a first pass at fixing readelf message pluralization. I've deliberately not fixed the "out of memory" errors since it's very unlikely that they will ever be complaining about not being able to allocate for a single entry, and a few others where the size is very unlikely to be 1 byte. Then there are messages like this one: "Out of %lu items there are %zu bucket clashes (longest of %zu entries).\n" I suppose this could be split into three parts, "Of %lu items ", "there are %zu bucket clashes ", and "(longest of %zu entries).\n", each part being printed separately, but that might not be ideal for sentence construction in other languages. Many of the ld tests are not run for cross builds, in some cases because the test needs to run a newly linked executable, and in others simply because it was easier to write the test for native only. Even when a test needs to run, it's good to compile and link to exercise the linker. So that's what this patch does. I've also rid us of the old ld_link procedure with all the HOSTING_CRT0 etc. setup. It's much simpler to just link with $CC. This does mean that a cross build with cross-compiler installed but no cross C-library will give lots of failures. If that turns out to be too annoying, I guess we can write a tcl procedure to detect it and not run all the extra tests. * Makefile.am (bootstrap): Delete rule. Currently, section ordering differs a little for non-loaded reloc sections output by ld -emit-relocs or ld -r and that after passing such objects through objcopy. Not that it really matters, but it would be better for a simple objcopy to produce an unchanged output object file. Also, section headers are put somewhere in the middle of the non-loaded sections, again slightly differently for ld and objcopy. This patch fixes these discrepancies and puts section headers last, which is where gold puts them, and is where bfd_from_remote_memory wrongly assumed they will be found. bfd/ * elf.c (assign_file_positions_except_relocs): Move section header placement to.. Hence defer emission until we at least did the basic early checks that would lead to no such symbol getting emitted.
