Using an input file objalloc memory for anything that isn't created when opening the bfd is not a good idea. The problem is that this memory can disappear if bfd_free_cached_info is called or when bfd closes files in order to keep the number of open files reasonable. bfd/ * xcofflink.c (xcoff_get_archive_info): Allocate xcoff_archive_info on the output bfd objalloc memory. ld/ * testsuite/ld-scripts/sysroot-prefix.exp (single_sysroot_prefix_test): Log $scriptname.

ERROR should really be reserved for errors in the testsuite framework, not just normal errors from the tools under test. Removing use of perror has been suggested before but without action, over concerns that some test failures might be missed. This patch removes uses of perror in ld_assemble, ld_compile and ld_nm, and updates numerous places that ignored the result of these functions by inappropriately returning an "unresolved" test status. Net result over my large set of targets look good, in some cases improving the diagnostics, eg: i386-msdos -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed i386-msdos -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed i386-msdos -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed i386-msdos -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed i386-msdos +FAIL: script i386-msdos +FAIL: MRI script i386-msdos +FAIL: MEMORY i386-msdos +FAIL: MEMORY with symbols * testsuite/lib/ld-lib.exp (default_ld_compile): Don't perror on a compiler error. A recent fix for the mmo input reader caused symbol-to-type mapping (which is heuristic for the mmo format) to change (as in "corrected"), and this test-case now passes. Before that change, the comment was actually wrong: the symbol type was mistakenly set to as B for uninitialized data, not T for text section.

m32c_md_end attempted to pad out a code section with nops, but this was just plain wrong in many ways: - The padding didn't happen at all if the last section emitted wasn't a code section. - The padding went to the wrong place if subsections were used, and the last subseg used wasn't the highest numbered subseg. - Padding wasn't added to all code sections. - If the last section was empty, it was padded to 4 bytes. - The padding didn't go to a 4-byte alignment boundary, instead it effectively made the last instruction 4 bytes in size. - The padding didn't take into account that code sections may have contents other than machine instructions. This patch restricts the section names matched in coff_section_type, a function that translates section names to symbol type, and arranges to translate section flags to symbol type before looking at names. The latter change resulted in various test failures due to improper section flags being used in tests, and by the plugin support, so fix that too. The new test fails on many ELF targets that lack .init/fini_array in their scripts. I've just xfailed those. pru-elf oddly defines __init_array_begin rather than __init_array_start. I've left that target as a FAIL, and pj-elf too which reports an error for undefined weak symbols. bfd/ PR 24511 * syms.c (coff_section_type): Only allow '.', '$' and numeric following the standard section names. Some of these tests use [which $CC] to check for the presence of the compiler before proceeding with the test, but run_ld_link_exec_tests and run_cc_link_tests give ERRORs if compilation fails. Also, even if $CC is defined and present, it may not be usable due to missing libraries, etc. This patch adds a new procedure check_compiler_available that attempts to build an empty program and caches the result. When -z separate-code, which is enabled by default for Linux/x86, is used to create executable, ld won't place any data in the code-only PT_LOAD segment. If there are no data sections placed before the code-only PT_LOAD segment, the program headers won't be mapped into any PT_LOAD segment. When the executable tries to access it (based on the program header address passed in AT_PHDR), it will lead to segfault. This patch inserts a GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_USED note if there may be no data sections before the text section so that the first PT_LOAD segment won't be code-only and will contain the program header. Testcases are adjusted to either pass "-z noseparate-code" to ld or discard the .note.gnu.property section. 2018-01-11ld: Fix issue where PROVIDE overrides defined symbolAndrew Burgess6-0/+61
In a linker script, a sequence like this: foo = ADDR (.some_section); bar = foo; PROVIDE (foo = 0); will result in 'bar = ADDR (.some_section)' and 'foo = 0', which seems like incorrect behaviour, foo is clearly defined elsewhere, and so the PROVIDE should not trigger. The problem is that an expression like this: foo = ADDR (.some_section); can't be evaluated until a late phase of the linker, due to the need for the section '.some_section' to have been placed, then the PROVIDE was being marked as being used during an earlier phase. At the end of the link, both lines: foo = ADDR (.some_section); PROVIDE (foo = 0); are active, and this causes the final value of 'foo' to be 0. The solution proposed in this commit is that, during earlier phases of the linker, when we see the expression 'foo = ADDR (.some_section);', instead of ignoring the expression, we create a "fake" definition of 'foo'. The existence of this "fake" definition prevents the PROVIDE from being marked used, and during the final phase the real definition of 'foo' will replace the "fake" definition. The new test provide-6 covers the exact case described above. The provide-7 test is similar to the above, but using constant expressions, this was never broken, but is added here to increase coverage. The provide-8 case also didn't fail before this commit, but I did manage to break this case during development of this patch. Currently when recording a PROVIDE statement in a linker map file we display something like: PROVIDE (SYMBOL, VALUE) However, in a linker script we write these statements like this: PROVIDE (SYMBOL = VALUE); This commit changes the output in the map file to be closer to linker script format, the map file now contains: PROVIDE (SYMBOL = VALUE) The ';' is still missing from the end, but map files are not intended to be valid linker script input, so adding the ';' just seems like clutter. ld/ChangeLog: * ldexp.c (exp_print_tree): Use '=' instead of ',' when printing PROVIDE statements. * testsuite/ld-scripts/provide-4.map: Update expected output. * testsuite/ld-scripts/provide-5.map: Likewise.
