2023-02-04ld: pru: Add optional section alignmentsDimitar Dimitrov1-3/+11
The Texas Instruments SoCs with AARCH64 host processors have stricter alignment requirements than ones with ARM32 host processors. It's not only the requirement for resource_table to be aligned to 8. But also any loadable segment size must be a multiple of 4 [1]. The current PRU default linker script may output a segment size not aligned to 4, which would cause firmware load failure on AARCH64 hosts. Fix this by using COMMONPAGESIZE and MAXPAGESIZE to signify respectively the section memory size requirement and the resource table section's start address alignment. This would avoid penalizing the ARM32 hosts, for which the default values (1 and 1) are sufficient. For AARCH64 hosts, the alignments would be overwritten from GCC spec files using the linker command line, e.g.: -z common-page-size=4 -z max-page-size=8 [1] https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/remoteproc/pru_rproc.c?h=v6.1#n555 ld/ChangeLog: * scripttempl/pru.sc (_data_end): Remove the alignment. 2023-02-04ld: pru: Merge the bss input sections into dataDimitar Dimitrov1-10/+14
The popular method to load PRU firmware is through the remoteproc Linux kernel driver. In order to save a few bytes from the firmware, the PRU CRT0 is spared from calling memset for the bss segment [1]. Instead the host loader is supposed to zero out the bss segment. This is important for PRU, which typically has only 8KB for instruction memory. The legacy non-mainline PRU host driver relied on the default behaviour of the kernel core remoteproc [2]. That default is to zero out the loadable memory regions not backed by file storage (i.e. the bss sections). This worked for the libgloss' CRT0. But the PRU loader merged in mainline Linux explicitly changes the default behaviour [3]. It no longer is zeroing out memory regions. Hence the bss sections are not initialized - neither by CRT0, nor by the host loader. This patch fixes the issue by aligning the GNU LD default linker script with the mainline Linux kernel expectation. Since the mainline kernel driver is submitted by the PRU manufacturer itself (Text Instruments), we can consider that as defining the ABI. This change has been tested on Beaglebone AI-64 [4]. Static counter variables in the firmware are now always starting from zero, as expected. There was only one new toolchain test failure in orphan3.d, due to reordering of the output sections. I believe this is a harmless issue. I could not rewrite the PASS criteria to ignore the output section ordering, so I have disabled that test case for PRU. 2023-01-04Avoid unaligned pointer reads in PEP .idata sectionMark Harmstone1-0/+1
This is something I discovered when working on aarch64, though it's relevant to x86_64 too. The PE32+ imports are located in the .idata section, which starts off with a 20-byte structure for each DLL, containing offsets into the rest of the section. This is the Import Directory Table in https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/debug/pe-format, which is a concatenation of the .idata$2 sections. This is then followed by an 20 zero bytes generated by the linker script, which calls this .idata$3. After this comes the .idata$4 entries for each function, which the loader overwrites with the function pointers. Because there's no padding between .idata$3 and .idata$4, this means that if there's an even number of DLLs, the function pointers won't be aligned on an 8-byte boundary. Misaligned reads are slower on x86_64, but this is more important on aarch64, as the e.g. `ldr x0, [x0, :lo12:__imp__func]` the compiler might generate requires __imp__func (the .idata$4 entry) to be aligned to 8 bytes. Without this you get IMAGE_REL_ARM64_PAGEOFFSET_12L overflow errors.

2022-11-15bfd: linker: merge .sframe sectionsIndu Bhagat1-0/+2
The linker merges all the input .sframe sections. When merging, the linker verifies that all the input .sframe sections have the same abi/arch. The linker uses libsframe library to perform key actions on the .sframe sections - decode, read, and create output data. This implies buildsystem changes to make and install libsframe before libbfd. The linker places the output .sframe section in a new segment of its own: PT_GNU_SFRAME. A new segment is not added, however, if the generated .sframe section is empty. When a section is discarded from the final link, the corresponding entries in the .sframe section for those functions are also deleted. The linker sorts the SFrame FDEs on start address by default and sets the SFRAME_F_FDE_SORTED flag in the .sframe section. This patch also adds support for generation of SFrame unwind information for the .plt* sections on x86_64. SFrame unwind info is generated for IBT enabled PLT, lazy/non-lazy PLT. The existing linker option --no-ld-generated-unwind-info has been adapted to include the control of whether .sframe unwind information will be generated for the linker generated sections like PLT. Commit 04f096fb9e25 ("Move the xc16x target to the obsolete list") moved the architecture from the "obsolete but still available" to the "obsolete / support removed" list in config.bfd, making the architecture impossible to enable (except maybe via "enable everything" options"). 2021-09-30ld: pru: Fix resource_table output section alignmentDimitar Dimitrov1-4/+3
My commit 261980de18b added alignment for the resource table symbol. But it is wrong. The Linux remoteproc driver loads and interprets the contents of the .resource_table ELF section, not of a table symbol. Without this patch, if the linker happens to output padding for symbol alignment, then the resource table contents as viewed by the kernel loader would "shift" and look corrupted. ld/ChangeLog: * scripttempl/pru.sc (.resource_table): Align the output section, not the first symbol. 2021-03-12aix: implement TLS relocation for gas and ldClément Chigot1-1/+29
Add support for TLS in XCOFF. Amongst the things done by this commit: - Update XCOFF auxialiary header to match new version and allow TLS sections. - Add TLS sections (.tdata and .tbss) support in gas and ld. - Add support for the TLS relocations in gas and ld. Two different types BFD_RELOC are created for PPC and PPC64 as the size is a pointer, thus distinct in 32 or 64bit. The addresses given by ld to .tdata and .tbss is a bit special. In XCOFF, these addresses are actually offsets from the TLS pointer computed at runtime. AIX assembly and linker does the same. In top of that, the .tdata must be before .data (this is mandatory for AIX loader). Thus, the aix ld script is recomputing "." before .data to restore its original value. There might be a simpler way, but this one is working. Optimisation linked to TLS relocations aren't yet implemented. bfd/ * reloc.c (BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_LE, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_IE, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_M, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_ML, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_GD, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_LD, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_LE, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_IE, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_M, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_ML): New relocations. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * libbfd.h: Regenerate. * coff-rs6000.c (xcoff_calculate_relocation): Call xcoff_reloc_type_tls for TLS relocations. The offset-within-section field in the symbol table entry is only 32 bits wide, so rather than emitting bogus entries omit them, and issue a diagnostic identifying the issue. This requires adjusting the PR/22267 test to no longer produce symbols with out of range values on 64-bit BFD. This also depends on adjustments to testsuite/ld-scripts/map-address.* made by an earlier patch. The purpose of the test can very well be achieved nevertheless.

2020-11-27ELF: Support .noinit and .persistent sectionsJozef Lawrynowicz5-5/+41
The ".persistent" section is for data that should be initialized during load, but not during application reset. The ".noinit" section is for data that should not be initialized during load or application reset. Targets utilizing the elf.sc linker script template can define HAVE_{NOINIT,PERSISTENT}=yes to include the .noinit or .persistent output sections in the generated linker script. Targets with existing support for .noinit did not handle unique .noinit.* and .gnu.linkonce.n.* sections the .noinit output section, this patch also fixes that. bfd/ChangeLog: * elf.c (special_sections_g): Add .gnu.linkonce.n and .gnu.linkonce.p. 2020-08-28MSP430: Fix alignment of __*_array_start symbols in default linker scriptJozef Lawrynowicz1-0/+3
__{preinit,init,fini}_array_start symbols must be word aligned in linker scripts. If the section preceding the __*_array_start symbol has an odd size, then a NULL byte will be present between the start symbol and the .*_array section itself, when the section gets automatically word-aligned. This results in a branch to an invalid address when the CRT startup code tries to run through the functions listed in the array sections. Some MSP430 linker scripts do not align the __*_array start symbols, so this added warning will catch that problem and help the user avoid the potential incorrect execution of the program. ld/ChangeLog: * emultempl/msp430.em (input_section_exists): New. 2020-07-31ARC: Fix ld/pr24511 testShahab Vahedi1-8/+16
With this patch, ld/pr24511 test passes for ARC. At first glance, the test was failing because the order of "__init_array_start" and "__fini_array_start" weak symbols were reversed: $ nm -n dump.out expected output | real output 00002104 D __init_array_start | 00002104 D __fini_array_start 0000210c D __fini_array_start | 00002104 D __init_array_start The order of the symbols are different as a side effect of both symbols being mapped to the _same_ address (0x2104). Looking further into the mapping logs [1] revealed that the linker script must consider all instances of ".init_array" (in other words ".init_array.*") inside its relevant section. Same logic holds for ".fini_array". Therefore, adding "KEEP (*(SORT(.init_array.*)))" to the linker script, along with the one for ".finit_array.*", resolved the problem. While at it, I took the liberty of refactoring the script a little bit and made those pieces of script macros. [1] Linker's mapping for the relevant part of the test --------------------------------------------------------------- .init_array 0x2104 0x0 0x2104 PROVIDE (__init_array_start = .) *(.init_array) [!provide] PROVIDE (__init_array_end = .) .fini_array 0x2104 0x0 0x2104 PROVIDE (__fini_array_start = .) *(.fini_array) [!provide] PROVIDE (__fini_array_end = .) .data 0x2104 0x0 *(.data .data.* .gnu.linkonce.d.*) .data 0x2104 0x0 pr24511.o .init_array.01000 0x2104 0x8 .init_array.01000 0x2104 0x8 pr24511.o .fini_array.01000 0x210c 0x8 .fini_array.01000 0x210c 0x8 pr24511.o --------------------------------------------------------------- ld: * scripttempl/elfarc.sc (.init_array): Keep ".init_array.*". 2020-07-19ld: optionally emit _etext last, before .dataHans-Peter Nilsson1-3/+10
So, here's my suggestion for making _init .. __etext cover .text + .rodata (including things like the read-only exception tables) for elf64mmix. A quick web search gives that __etext (and friends) isn't well defined, so each target can interpret the "end of text segment" to their own liking. It seems likely this change is also a better fit than the default for other ports, at least those with .rodata after .text in the same segment. The presence of a separate rodata-segment is optional (and not true for elf64mmix). This is reflected in the name as SEPARATE_TEXT / SEPARATE_CODE isn't considered, to keep it simple; each target has to make sure their settings of variables make sense. ld: * scripttempl/elf.sc (ETEXT_LAST_IN_RODATA_SEGMENT): New variable. * emulparams/elf64mmix.sh (ETEXT_LAST_IN_RODATA_SEGMENT): Define. * testsuite/ld-mmix/sec-1.d: Adjust.
2020-07-17mmix ld: move .init (and _init) first.Hans-Peter Nilsson1-6/+6
This both makes the section layout more similar to that of the general default for ELF and fixes (makes true) an assumption that code and rodata is located between _init and __etext, in libgcc/config/mmix/crti.S. Sadly, that's not actually true for ELF (generally and for elf64mmix), where exception-tables and .rodata is after _etext; I'm pondering what to do about that. The original mmix simulator behavior is that memory magically appears on access, initialized with 0, which is not preferable when chasing bugs by throwing code the size of the gcc test-suite to the simulator. The code in crti.S compatibly enables simulator machinery to identify undefined memory and instead stopping the simulator with an error (going to interactive mode for interactive runs). See http://gcc.gnu.org/legacy-ml/gcc-patches/2012-10/msg01871.html for more, including the mmix-sim.ch "patch file". This fixes only one error in the gcc testsuite, gcc.c-torture/execute/pr20621-1.c with LTO, where for some reason gcc/lto chooses to move (writable) data that is only used to read 0 to .rodata. An access (sufficiently far inside a block) in an unregistered place is flagged as an invalid access. The bpo-9m test that I had to adjust, actually exposes a wart: mmo does not have the notion of symbol types (or sections) and the test-case now has leading zeros at "Main" eventually leading to it being misdiagnosed as being outside .text and .data, thus here mapped to BFD as an absolute symbol. The test is not intended to check the mmo symbol-type machinery, so I'm just tweaking it to be symbol-type-neutral for "Main". Since you have to jump through hoops to see the problem, I don't think this commit is worth putting on the 2.35-branch. ld: * scripttempt/mmo.sc: Move .init first in .text output section. * testsuite/ld-mmix/bpo-9m.d: Adjust accordingly.

2019-11-07Remove CR16C supportAlan Modra1-66/+0
I think it is past time to remove CR16C support. CR16C was added in 2004, and only for ld. gas and binutils support is lacking, and there have been no commits to bfd/elf32-cr16c.c other than warning fixes or global maintainers making changes to all targets. I see no maintainer listed for CR16C, and no commits from anyone at NSC supporting the target. Furthermore, at the time the CR16 support was added in 2007, config.sub was changed upstream to no longer recognise cr16c as a valid cpu. That means the CR16C ld support is only available as a secondary target by configuring with, for example, --enable-targets=all or --enable-targets=cr16c-unknown-elf. 2019-08-07ld: use a specific linker script in BPF targetsJose E. Marchesi1-0/+702
This patch makes the elf64bpf emulation to use it's own linker script, based on elf.sc. At the moment, the only change is that the BPF executable doesn't define an entry symbol (BPF programs feature several entry points scattered in several sections.) This is a step towards the goal of generating proper ELF executables that would be loaded by the kernel's libbpf. We are not there yet: BPF "programs" should still be linked with -r. This change removes a warning while linking executables, decreases the number of unsupported tests in the target from 47 to 29, and increases the number of expected passes from 104 to 145. Regtested in x86_64 for all targets. No regressions. ld/ChangeLog: 2019-08-07 Jose E. Marchesi <jose.marchesi@oracle.com> * scripttempl/elf64bpf.sc: Adapted from elf.sc. * emulparams/elf64bpf.sh (SCRIPT_NAME): Use elf64bpf. (EMBEDDED): Define. * testsuite/ld-bpf/call-1.d: Do not expect a warning regarding an undefined entry symbol. * testsuite/ld-bpf/jump-1.d: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-undefined/undefined.exp: Do not pass '-e entry' to ld in BPF targets, and do not expect line number information. * testsuite/ld-srec/srec.exp (run_srec_test): xfail s-record tests in BPF targets.

2019-04-10ld: Don't define __rel[a]_iplt_start/__rel[a]_iplt_end in PIEH.J. Lu1-8/+9
__rel[a]_iplt_start and __rel[a]_iplt_end are defined to handle IFUNC in static executables. For PIE, since IFUNC is handled as the part of the normal dynamic relocation processing, there is no need to define these symbols in PIE. * scripttempl/elf.sc (CREATE_PIC): New. Set for CREATE_SHLIB or CREATE_PIE. (__rel_iplt_start): Don't define for CREATE_PIC. (__rel_iplt_end): Likewise. (__rela_iplt_start): Likewise. (__rela_iplt_end): Likewise.
2019-03-21Add SORT_NONE to .init and .fini in scriptsAlan Modra36-79/+82
The special case for .init and .fini in update_wild_statements is ineffective for .init or .fini wildcards inside other output sections. The special case needs to be on the wildcard, not the output section. This patch is belt and braces, both fixing update_wild_statements and the scripts. * scripttempl/alpha.sc, * scripttempl/armbpabi.sc, * scripttempl/crisaout.sc, * scripttempl/elf32cr16.sc, * scripttempl/elf32crx.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16x.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16xl.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16xs.sc, * scripttempl/elf64hppa.sc, * scripttempl/elf_chaos.sc, * scripttempl/elfarc.sc, * scripttempl/elfarcv2.sc, * scripttempl/elfd30v.sc, * scripttempl/elfm68hc11.sc, * scripttempl/elfm68hc12.sc, * scripttempl/elfm9s12z.sc, * scripttempl/elfmicroblaze.sc, * scripttempl/elfxgate.sc, * scripttempl/elfxtensa.sc, * scripttempl/epiphany_4x4.sc, * scripttempl/ft32.sc, * scripttempl/i386beos.sc, * scripttempl/iq2000.sc, * scripttempl/mcorepe.sc, * scripttempl/mep.sc, * scripttempl/mips.sc, * scripttempl/moxie.sc, * scripttempl/pe.sc, * scripttempl/pep.sc, * scripttempl/ppcpe.sc, * scripttempl/tic4xcoff.sc, * scripttempl/tic80coff.sc, * scripttempl/v850.sc, * scripttempl/v850_rh850.sc, * scripttempl/visium.sc, * scripttempl/xstormy16.sc: Add KEEP and SORT_NONE to .init and .fini wildcards. * scripttempl/elf32xc16x.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16xl.sc, * scripttempl/elf32xc16xs.sc: Add .fini wildcard. * scripttempl/elf_chaos.sc: Add .init output section. * scripttempl/elfd30v.sc: Remove duplicate .init. * scripttempl/elfm68hc11.sc, * scripttempl/elfm68hc12.sc, * scripttempl/elfm9s12z.sc, * scripttempl/elfxgate.sc: Remove duplicate .init, and add .fini wildcard. * scripttempl/ppcpe.sc (INIT, FINI): Delete. * ldlang.c (update_wild_statements): Special case .init and .fini in the wildcard, not the output section.
