I get some spurious changes when running autoconf/automake for various projects in the tree. This is likely because they were generated using distro-patched tools last time. I ran `autoreconf -f` in the various automake projects of the binutils-gdb tree, and this is the result. Many ELF linker targets support multiple "emulations" and thus have multiple copies of elf32.em being compiled and linked into ld. This patch moves much of elf32.em and elf-generic.em into files which will be compiled just once, resulting in a 20% decrease in ld size for --enable-targets=all. * Makefile.am (ALL_EMUL_EXTRA_OFILES): Add ldelf and ldelfgen. This patch modifies genscripts.sh to emit dependency info along with the generated emulation e*.c files. This is done by a new source_sh function that records its arg to a file (.deps/e*.Tc), using the function whenever a shell script is sourced. In looking at the csky-elf vs. csky-linux differences, the first thing I compared was csky_elf.sh and cskyelf_linux.sh. Those files are mostly the same but besides the real differences, annoyingly have some lines ordered differently. It's better in such cases to have one file source the other, making differences plain. This patch does that for csky and microblaze, removes an unused variable defined in a few places, and fixes ld makefile dependencies. * Makefile.am (eskyelf.c, eskyelf_linux.c): Depend on cskyelf.em. For ld -r, we generally set the VMA of sections to zero. This is done to make the output of ld -r most similar to that output by the assembler, which generally has sections starting at VMA zero. In some cases that covers for backend bugs which would mis-handle relocatable object files with non-zero section VMAs. This patch fixes a few sections that didn't have zero VMAs for ld -r. "ld -r" generally should not combine object file sections with different names. For example, "ld -r" should not combine ".text", ".text.hot" and ".text.cold" into an output ".text" section. An exception needs to be made for linker created sections, for example, branch trampoline sections that might be created even for ld -r. "ld -r" also should not define symbols in linker scripts. Any definitions are likely to conflict with those defined at final link. This patch series is a new binutils port for C-SKY processors, including support for both the V1 and V2 processor variants. V1 is derived from the MCore architecture while V2 is substantially different, with mixed 16- and 32-bit instructions, a larger register set, a different (but overlapping) ABI, etc. There is support for bare-metal ELF targets and Linux with both glibc and uClibc. This code is being contributed jointly by C-SKY Microsystems and Mentor Graphics. C-SKY is responsible for the technical content and has proposed Lifang Xia and Yunhai Shang as port maintainers. (Note that C-SKY does have a corporate copyright assignment on file with the FSF.) When trying to run the update-gnulib.sh script in gdb, I get this: Error: Wrong automake version (Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/\${ <-- HERE ([^ =:+{}]+)}/ at /opt/automake/1.11.1/bin/automake line 4113.), we need 1.11.1. Aborting. Apparently, it's an issue with a regex in automake that triggers a warning starting with Perl 5.22. It has been fixed in automake 1.15.1. So I think it's a good excuse to bump the versions of autoconf and automake used in the gnulib import. And to avoid requiring multiple builds of autoconf/automake, it was suggested that we bump the required version of those tools for all binutils-gdb. For autoconf, the 2.69 version is universally available, so it's an easy choice. For automake, different distros and distro versions have different automake versions. But 1.15.1 seems to be the most readily available as a package. In any case, it's easy to build it from source. I removed the version checks from AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS and AC_PREREQ, because I don't think they are useful in our case. They only specify a lower bound for the acceptable version of automake/autoconf. That's useful if you let the user choose the version of the tool they want to use, but want to set a minimum version (because you use a feature that was introduced in that version). In our case, we force people to use a specific version anyway. For the autoconf version, we have the check in config/override.m4 that enforces the version we want. It will be one less thing to update next time we change autotools version. I hit a few categories of problems that required some changes. They are described below along with the chosen solutions. Problem 1: configure.ac:17: warning: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: two- and three-arguments forms are deprecated. The difficulty is the shell-script quoting, for example aarch64elf.em:PARSE_AND_LIST_OPTIONS "Don'\''t". I suppose you could avoid contractions like "don't" but I'm unsure as to whether gettext could handle everything in the emulparams scripts. The right thing to do is feed the generated C files to gettext, as this patch does. The arc700 nps variant uses some specific named sections to facilitate its CMEM based instructions, which operate on memory regions fixed at specific addresses. This commit adds the arclinux_nps emulation, which is based on the arclinux emulation. The new emulation uses the OTHER_SECTIONS variable in the emulation parameters script to provide symbols mapping to various locations in the CMEM space on nps. Many of the ld tests are not run for cross builds, in some cases because the test needs to run a newly linked executable, and in others simply because it was easier to write the test for native only. Even when a test needs to run, it's good to compile and link to exercise the linker. So that's what this patch does. I've also rid us of the old ld_link procedure with all the HOSTING_CRT0 etc. setup. It's much simpler to just link with $CC. This does mean that a cross build with cross-compiler installed but no cross C-library will give lots of failures. If that turns out to be too annoying, I guess we can write a tcl procedure to detect it and not run all the extra tests. * Makefile.am (bootstrap): Delete rule.
