I combined several small changes into one patch here. I believe I
started by noticing that the "title" is not needed by tui_gen_win_info
and could be self-managing (i.e. std::string). Moving this revealed
that "can_box" is also a property of tui_win_info and not
tui_gen_win_info; and this in turn caused the changes to
tui_make_window and box_win.

There's no need for tui_data_window::display_regs any more (if there
ever was). All the paths through data window construction will end up
setting this to true. This patch removes the member.

tui_data_window::regs_content is currently a vector of unique_ptr.
However, due to the way this is managed now, there is no need to keep
the pointers -- it can simply be a vector of the objects themselves.
This patch removes this extra layer of indirection.

This moves tui_reg_layout later in tui-regs.c, closer to where it is

This changes tui_data_item_window::content to be a unique_xmalloc_ptr
and fixes up the fallout. It also removes a parameter from
tui_expand_tabs, as it was only ever given one value.
This also removes some tab-handling code from
tui_data_window::display_registers_from. Because the content can only
be set by tui_register_format, and because that calls tui_expand_tabs,
it's not possible to see a tab here.

The TUI has a few #defines that hold user-visible strings. As these
are only used in a single spot, this patch removes the defines,
preferring direct use of the string where needed. Furthermore, now
the strings are wrapped in _(), which is friendlier for i18n purposes.

TUI windows keep track of their visibility in a boolean field.
However, this is not needed, because a window is visible if and only
if it has an underlying curses handle. So, we can remove this
separate field.

The TUI currently has two different ways to resize a window: the
resize method, and the methods make_invisible_and_set_new_height and
make_visible_with_new_height.
There's no deep reason to have two different ways to resize a window,
so this patch unifies them, leaving just the "resize" method.
This also changes the locator to be handled more like an ordinary
window and less like an adjunct of the associated source window.

In the TUI, whether or not a window can be boxed is a property of the
window's type. This adds a can_box method to the window classes, and
changes tui_make_window to defer to this, removing the "box_it"
paramter. This also lets us remove "enum tui_box", as it is no longer
used.

An earlier patch caused tui-windata.h to be essentially empty. And,
other earlier patches implemented TUI data window methods in any spot
that happened to be convenient at the time.
This patch rearranges all the data window code to be somewhat more
organized. It moves tui_data_window to tui-regs.h, and moves the
implementation of all methods to tui-regs.c. It then removes
tui-windata.h and tui-windata.c.
It also removes the "structuring" comments from tui-regs.c; these are
not the usual gdb style, and were out of date anyhow. Finally, it
moves _initialize_tui_regs to the end of the file, per the usual gdb
convention.

tui_layout_command is a simple wrapper for tui_set_layout_by_name.
This removes the extra layer and cleans up the resulting function a
bit -- changing it to call error rather than return a result. This
necessitated a small change to tui-regs.c, to avoid calling the
function that is being removed.

The TUI has some stub code for adding data other than registers to the

This changes tui_win_info to derive from tui_gen_win_info, rather than
having a tui_gen_win_info as a member. This removes a layer of member
access from the entire TUI, which is why this patch is so large. This
change will enable further removal of switches based on window type.

A coming patch will add a constructor to tui_gen_win_info. However,
because the tui_which_element union contains an object of this type,
first something must be done here in order to avoid having a union
with a member that has a constructor. This patch changes this element

I found a few more spots that unnecessarily cast NULL to a pointer
type. My earlier search included a "*" in the cast, but these use a
typedef to a pointer type instead. This patch removes these casts.

I noticed some unnecessary casts of NULL. This removes all the
unnecessary ones, leaving only ones where we must ensure that NULL has
pointer type for passing through varargs.
I removed a couple of useless casts of 0 that I noticed while writing
this.

Adds an utility function to make it shorter to write the common case
of wrapping an xstrdup with a unique_xmalloc_ptr, and uses it
throughout.
Note: I tried to put this in common/common-utils.h near skip_spaces,
etc. but that is included in common/common-defs.h before
common/gdb_unique_ptr.h is included, so it would fail to compile
because gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr isn't defined at that point yet. I
tried moving the gdb_unique_ptr.h inclusion before common-utils.h, but
that doesn't work because gdb_unique_ptr.h depends on common-utils.h
for xfree.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

The expression
gdbarch_num_regs (gdbarch) + gdbarch_num_pseudo_regs (gdbarch)
is used quite often to find the number of cooked registers (raw + pseudo
registers). This patch introduces gdbarch_num_cooked_regs, which does
the equivalent. It substantially reduces required wrapping in some
places, so should improve readability.
There is a for loop in m68hc11_frame_unwind_cache that had iterated
until (the equivalent of) gdbarch_num_cooked_regs (gdbarch) - 1. During
review, we concluded that this is most likely an off-by-one mistake, so
I replaced it with gdbarch_num_cooked_regs (gdbarch).

found with -Wuseless-cast (which, I think, can't easily be enabled for

This patch replaces tui_restore_gdbout (a cleaup function) with a use
of scoped_restore. This one is broken out into its own patch because
it might slightly change the behavior of gdb: it saves and restores
pagination_enabled, whereas the tui_restore_gdbout unconditionally set
pagination_enabled to 1; and I think this warrants closer review.

This patch reworks the whole completion machinery, and prepares it
for later enhancements.
Adds a new "completion_tracker" class that is meant to hold everything
about the state of the current completion operation.
This class now has the responsibility of tracking the list of
completion matches, and checking whether the max completions limit has
been reached. You can look at this as this patch starting out by
C++fying the existing "completion_tracker" in symtab.c (it's just an
htab_t typedef currently), moving it to completer.h/c, and then making
it a class/generalizing/enhancing it.
Unlike with the current tracking, completion_tracker now checks
whether the limit has been reached on each completion match list
insertion. This both simplifies the max-completions handling code
(maybe_add_completion_enum is gone, for example), and is a
prerequisite for follow up patches.
The current completion_tracker is only used for symbol completions,
and the symbol code gets at the current instance via globals. This
patch cleans that up by adding a completion_tracker reference to the
signature of the completion functions, and passing the tracker around
everywhere necessary.
Then, the patch changes how the completion match list is handed over
to readline. Currently, we're using the rl_completion_entry_function
readline entry point, and the patch switches to
rl_attempted_completion_function. A following patch will want to let
GDB itself decide the common completion prefix between all matches
(what readline calls the "lowest common denominator"), instead of
having readline compute it, and that's not possible with the
rl_completion_entry_function entry point. Also,
rl_attempted_completion_function lets GDB hand over the match list to
readline as an array in one go instead of passing down matches one by
one, so from that angle it's a nicer entry point anyway.
Lastly, the patch catches exceptions around the readline entry points,
because we can't let C++ exceptions cross readline. We handle that in
the readline input entry point, but the completion entry point isn't
guarded, so GDB can abort if completion throws. E.g., in current
master:

This patch fixes that. This will be exercised in the new tests added
